In the disks of four jellyfish galaxies from the GASP sample at redshift $\sim 0.05$ we detect molecular gas masses systematically higher than in field galaxies. These galaxies are being stripped of their gas by ram pressure from the intra cluster medium and are, in general, forming stars at high rate with respect to non-stripped galaxies of similar stellar masses. We find that, unless giant molecular clouds in the disk are unbound by ram pressure leading to exceptionally high CO--to--$\rm H_2$ conversion factors, these galaxies have a molecular gas content 4-5 times higher than normal galaxies of similar masses, and molecular gas depletion times ranging from $\sim$1 to 9 Gyr, corresponding to generally very low star formation efficiencies. The molecular gas mass within the disk is a factor between 4 and $\sim$100 times higher than the neutral gas mass, as opposed to the disks of normal spirals that contain similar amounts of molecular and neutral gas. Intriguingly, the molecular plus neutral total amount of gas is similar to that in normal spiral galaxies of similar stellar mass. These results strongly suggest that ram pressure in disks of galaxies during the jellyfish phase leads to a very efficient conversion of HI into $\rm H_2$.
We present MeerKAT HI observations of six jellyfish candidate galaxies (JFCGs) in the galaxy cluster, A2626. Two of the six galaxies JW100 and JW103, that were identified as JFCGs from B-band images, are confirmed as jellyfish galaxies (JFGs). Both of the JFGs have low HI content, reside in the cluster core, and move at very high velocities ($\sim$ 3$σ_{cl}$). The other JFCGs, identified as non-jellyfish galaxies, are HI rich, with HI morphologies revealing warps, asymmetries, and possible tidal interactions. Both the A2626 JFGs and three other confirmed JFGs from the GASP sample show that the…
We present JVLA-C observations of the HI gas in JO204, one of the most striking jellyfish galaxies from the GASP survey. JO204 is a massive galaxy in the low-mass cluster Abell 957 at z=0.04243. The HI map reveals an extended 90 kpc long ram-pressure stripped tail of neutral gas, stretching beyond the 30 kpc long ionized gas tail and pointing away from the cluster center. The HI mass seen in emission is (1.32 $ \pm 0.13) \times 10^{9} \rm M_{\odot}$, mostly located in the tail. The northern part of the galaxy disk has retained some HI gas, while the southern part has already been completely st…
Ram-pressure stripping is a crucial evolutionary driver for cluster galaxies and jellyfish galaxies, characterized by very extended tails of stripped gas, are the most striking examples of it in action. Recently, those extended tails are found to show on-going star formation raising the question how the stripped, cold gas can survive long enough to form new stars outside the stellar disk. In this work, we summarize the most recent results achieved within the GASP collaboration to provide a holistic explanation for this phenomenon. We focus on two textbook examples of jellyfish galaxies, JO206 …
Jellyfish galaxies in clusters are key tools to understand environmental processes at work in dense environments. The advent of Integral Field Spectroscopy has recently allowed to study a significant sample of stripped galaxies in the cluster environment at z$\sim 0.05$, through the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) survey. However, optical spectroscopy can only trace the ionized gas component through the H$_α$ emission that can be spatially resolved on kpc scale at this redshift. The complex interplay between the various gas phases (ionized, neutral, molecular) is however y…

We present a statistical study on the [C I]($^{3} \rm P_{1} \rightarrow {\rm ^3 P}_{0}$), [C I] ($^{3} \rm P_{2} \rightarrow {\rm ^3 P}_{1}$) lines (hereafter [C I] (1$-$0) and [C I] (2$-$1), respectively) and the CO (1$-$0) line for a sample of (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies [(U)LIRGs]. We explore the correlations between the luminosities of CO (1$-$0) and [C I] lines, and find that $L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ correlates almost linearly with both $L'_ \mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$ and $L'_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$, suggesting that [C I] lines can trace total molecular gas mass at least for (U)LIRGs. We also inv…
We present maps of atomic carbon [CI](1-0) and [CI](2-1) at a linear resolution ~1kpc scale for a sample of one HII, six LINER, three Seyfert and five starburst galaxies observed with Herschel. We compare spatial distributions of two [CI] lines with that of CO(1-0) emission, and find that both [CI] lines distribute similarly to CO(1-0) emission in most galaxies. We present luminosity ratio maps of L'_[CI](1-0)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_[CI](1-0) (hereafter R_[CI]) and f_70/f_160. L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0), R_[CI] and f_70/f_160 are centrally peaked in starbursts; where…
One of the most fundamental baryonic matter components of galaxies is the neutral atomic hydrogen (H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$). At low redshifts, this component can be traced directly through the 21-cm transition, but to infer H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$ gas content of the most distant galaxies, a viable tracer is needed. We here investigate the fidelity of the fine structure transition of the ($^2P_{3/2} - ^2P_{1/3}$) transition of singly-ionized carbon [C$\,{\rm \scriptsize II}$] at $158\,μ$m as a proxy for H$\,{\rm \scriptsize I}$ in a set simulated galaxies at $z\approx 6$, following the work b…
We present fluxes in both neutral carbon [CI] lines at the centers of 76 galaxies with FIR luminosities between 10^{9} and 10^{12} L(o) obtained with Herschel-SPIRE and with ground-based facilities, along with the J=7-6, J=4-3, J=2-1 12CO and J=2-1 13CO line fluxes. We investigate whether these lines can be used to characterize the molecular ISM of the parent galaxies in simple ways and how the molecular gas properties define the model results. In most starburst galaxies, the [CI]/13CO flux ratio is much higher than in Galactic star-forming regions, and it is correlated to the total FIR lumino…
Many extensions of the Standard Model include axions or axion-like particles (ALPs). Here we study ALP to photon conversion in the magnetic field of the Milky Way and starburst galaxies. By modelling the effects of the coherent and random magnetic fields, the warm ionized medium and the warm neutral medium on the conversion process, we simulate maps of the conversion probability across the sky for a range of ALP energies. In particular, we consider a diffuse cosmic ALP background (CAB) analogous to the CMB, whose existence is suggested by string models of inflation. ALP-photon conversion of a …
The amount of cold, molecular gas in high-redshift galaxies is typically inferred from proxies of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$), such as carbon monoxide (CO) or neutral atomic carbon ([CI]) and molecular gas mass conversion factors. The use of these proxies, however, relies on modeling and observations that have not been directly measured outside the local universe. Here, we use recent samples of high-redshift gamma-ray burst (GRB) and quasar molecular gas absorbers to determine this conversion factor $α_{\rm [CI]}$ from the column density of H$_2$, which gives us the mass per unit column, and th…
While molecular quasar absorption systems provide unique probes of the physical and chemical properties of the gas as well as original constraints on fundamental physics and cosmology, their detection remains challenging. Here we present the results from a complete survey for molecular gas in thirty-nine absorption systems selected solely upon the detection of neutral carbon lines in SDSS spectra, without any prior knowledge of the atomic or molecular gas content. H2 is found in all twelve systems (including seven new detections) where the corresponding lines are covered by the instrument setu…
Current observational evidence suggests that the star formation rate (SFR) efficiency of neutral atomic hydrogen gas measured in Damped Ly-alpha Systems (DLAs) at z~3 is more than 10 times lower than predicted by the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation. To understand the origin of this deficit, and to investigate possible evolution with redshift and galaxy properties, we measure the SFR efficiency of atomic gas at z~1, z~2, and z~3 around star-forming galaxies. We use new robust photometric redshifts in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to create galaxy stacks in these three redshift bins, and measure t…
The apparent lack of cold molecular gas in blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies is at variance with their intense star-formation episode. The CO molecule, often used a tracer of H2 through a conversion function, is selectively photodissociated in dust-poor environments and, as a result, a potentially large fraction of H2 is expected to reside in the so-called CO-dark gas, where it could be traced instead by infrared cooling lines [CI], [CII], and [OI]. Although the fraction of CO-dark gas to total molecular gas is expected to be relatively large in metal-poor galaxies, many uncertainties remain d…
