A generic fiber positioning strategy and a fabrication path are presented for microlens-fiber-coupled integral field units. It is assumed that microlens-produced micro-images are carried to the spectrograph input through step-index,multi-mode fiber, but our results apply to micro-pupil reimaging applications as well. Considered are the performance trades between the filling percentage of the fiber core with the micro-image versus throughput and observing efficiency.A merit function is defined as the product of the transmission efficiency and the etendue loss. For a hexagonal packing of spatial elements, the merit function has been found to be maximized to 94% of an ideal fiber IFU merit value (which has zero transmission loss and does not increase the etendue) with a microlens-fiber alignment (centering) tolerance of 1 um RMS. The maximum acceptable relative tilt between the fiber and the microlens face has been analyzed through optical modeling and found to be 0.3 degree RMS for input f-ratio slower than f/3.5 but it is much more relaxed for faster beams. Several options of fabricating fiber holders have been compared to identify cost-effective solutions that deliver the desired fiber positioning accuracy. Femto-second laser-drilling methods deliver holes arrayed on plates with a position and diameter accuracy of 1.5 um RMS, and with an aspect ratio of 1:10. A commercial vendor produces plates with thickness of 5 mm, but with similar (1 um RMS) positioning accuracy. Both of these techniques are found to be moderately expensive. A purely photo-lithographic technique performed at WCAM (a facility at the University of Wisconsin, Madison), in tandem with deep reactive ion etching, has been used to produce a repeatable recipe with 100% yield. Photo-lithography is more precise (0.5 um RMS) in terms of hole positioning and similar diameter accuracy (1 um RMS).
We describe the optimum telescope focal ratio for a two-element, three surface, telecentric image-transfer microlens-to-fiber coupled integral field unit within the constraints imposed by micro-optics fabrication and optical aberrations. We create a generalized analytical description of the micro-optics optical parameters from first principals. We find that the optical performance, including all aberrations, of a design constrained by an analytic model considering only spherical aberration and diffraction matches within +/-4% of a design optimized by ray-tracing software such as Zemax. The ana…
The arrangement of the fiber positioning units in LAMOST focal plane may lead to the collisions during the fiber allocation. To avoid these collisions, the soft protection system has to abandon some targets located in the overlapped field of the adjacent fiber units. In this paper, we firstly analyzed the probability of the collisions between fibers and inferred their possible reasons. It is useful to solve the problem of the fiber-positioning units collisions so as to improve LAMOST efficiency. Based on it, a collision handling system is designed by using the master-slave control structure be…
This paper discusses a new approach for determining the calibration parameters of independently-actuated optical fibers in multi-object astronomical fiber positioning systems. This work comes from the development of a new type of piezoelectric motor intended to enhance the 'tilting spine' fiber positioning technology originally created by the Australian Astronomical Observatory. Testing has shown that the motor's performance can vary depending on the fiber's location within its accessible field, meaning that an individual fiber is difficult calibrate with a one-time routine. Better performance…
The PFS is a multi-object spectrograph fed by 2394 fibers at the prime focus of Subaru telescope. Since the F/# at the prime focus is too fast for the spectrograph, we designed a small concave-plano negative lens to be attached to the tip of each fiber that converts the telescope beam (F/2.2) to F/2.8. We optimized the lens to maximize the number of rays that can be confined inside F/2.8 while maintaining a 1.28 magnification. The microlenses are manufactured by glass molding, and an ultra-broadband AR coating (<1.5% for lambda=0.38-1.26 um) will be applied to the front surface.
Modern extreme adaptive optics (AO) systems achieving diffraction-limited performance open up new possibilities for instrumentation. Especially important for the fields of spectroscopy and interferometry is that it enables the prospect to couple light into single-mode fibers (SMFs). However, due to their small size, efficient coupling is very sensitive to the quality of the fiber alignment, beam drifts and higher-frequency tip-tilt aberrations caused by telescope mechanics and vibrations. These residual aberrations are not always sensed and corrected by the AO system, leading to unacceptable l…
FOCCoS, Fiber Optical Cable and Connector System, has the main function of capturing the direct light from the focal plane of Subaru Telescope using optical fibers, each one with a microlens in its tip, and conducting this light through a route containing connectors to a set of four spectrographs. The optical fiber cable is divided in 3 different segments called Cable A, Cable B and Cable C. Multi-fibers connectors assure precise connection among all optical fibers of the segments, providing flexibility for instrument changes. To assure strong and accurate connection, these sets are arranged i…
Massively parallel multi-object spectrographs are on the leading edge of cosmology instrumentation. The highly successful Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) which begun survey operations in May 2021, for example, has 5,000 robotically-actuated multimode fibers, which deliver light from thousands of individual galaxies and quasars simultaneously to an array of high-resolution spectrographs off-telescope. The redshifts are individually measured, thus providing 3D maps of the Universe in unprecedented detail, and enabling precise measurement of dark energy expansion and other key cosmolo…
Starbugs are miniature piezoelectric walking robots that can be operated in parallel to position many payloads like optical fibers across a telescopes focal plane. They consist of two concentric piezoelectric ceramic tubes that walk with micron step size. In addition to individual optical fibers, Starbugs have moved a payload of 0.75kg at several millimeters per second. The Australian Astronomical Observatory previously developed prototype devices and tested them in the laboratory. Now we are optimizing the Starbug design for production and deployment in the TAIPAN instrument, which will be ca…
We report on the design and construction of a microlens-array (MLA)-based pupil slicer and double scrambler for MAROON-X, a new fiber-fed, red-optical, high-precision radial-velocity spectrograph for one of the twin 6.5m Magellan Telescopes in Chile. We have constructed a 3X slicer based on a single cylindrical MLA and show that geometric efficiencies of >85% can be achieved, limited by the fill factor and optical surface quality of the MLA. We present here the final design of the 3x pupil slicer and double scrambler for MAROON-X, based on a dual MLA design with (a)spherical lenslets. We also …
We have developed an analytic model for generic image transfer using microlens-coupled fibers to determine the telescope input beam speed that optimizes the lenslet clear aperture and minimizes fiber focal-ratio degradation. Assuming fibers are fed at f/3.5 by the lenslets, our study shows that f/11 is the optimum telescope beam speed to feed a lenslet coupled to a fiber with a 100um diameter core. These considerations are relevant for design of high-efficiency, dedicated survey telescopes that employ lenslet-coupled fiber systems.
WEAVE is a 1000-fiber multi-object spectroscopic facility for the 4.2~m William Herschel Telescope. It will feature a double-headed pick-and-place fiber positioning robot comprising commercially available robotic axes. This paper presents results on the performance of these axes, obtained by testing a prototype system in the laboratory. Positioning accuracy is found to be better than the manufacturer's published values for the tested cases, indicating that the requirement for a maximum positioning error of 8.0~microns is achievable. Field reconfiguration times well within the planned 60 minute…
We present an optimized algorithm for assigning fibers to targets in next-generation fiber-fed multi-object spectrographs. The method, that we named draining algorithm, ensures that the maximum number of targets in a given target field is observed in the first few tiles. Using randomly distributed targets and mock galaxy catalogs we have estimated that the gain provided by the draining algorithm as compared to a random assignment can be as much as 2% for the first tiles. This would imply for a survey like BigBOSS saving for observation several hundred thousand objects or, alternatively, reduci…
The development of bare fiber or air-gapped microlens-fiber coupled Integral Field Units (IFUs) for astronomical applications requires careful treatment of the fiber end-faces (terminations). Previous studies suggest that minimization of fiber end face irregularity leads to better optical performance in terms of the diminishing effect of focal ratio degradation. Polishing has typically been performed using commercial rotary polishers with multiple gradually decreasing grit sizes. These polishers generally lack the ability to carefully adjust angular position and polishing force. Control of the…
Starbugs are miniaturised robotic devices that position optical fibres over a telescope's focal plane in parallel operation for high multiplex spectroscopic surveys. The key advantage of the Starbug positioning system is its potential to configure fields of hundreds of targets in a few minutes, consistent with typical detector readout times. Starbugs have been selected as the positioning technology for the TAIPAN (Transforming Astronomical Imaging surveys through Polychromatic Analysis of Nebulae) instrument, a prototype for MANIFEST (Many Instrument Fiber System) on the GMT (Giant Magellan Te…
