Recently, a purely quantum version of polar codes has been proposed in [1] based on a quantum channel combining and splitting procedure, where a randomly chosen two-qubit Clifford unitary acts as channel combining operation. Here, we consider the quantum polar code construction using the same channel combining and splitting procedure as in [1], but with a fixed two-qubit Clifford unitary. For the family of Pauli channels, we show that polarization happens in multi-levels, where synthesized quantum virtual channels tend to become completely noisy, half-noisy, or noiseless. Further, we present a quantum polar code exploiting the multilevel nature of polarization, and provide an efficient decoding for this code. We show that half-noisy channels can be frozen by fixing their inputs in either the amplitude or the phase basis, which allows reducing the number of preshared EPR pairs compared to the construction in [1]. We provide an upper bound on the number of preshared EPR pairs, which is an equality in the case of the quantum erasure channel. To improve the speed of polarization, we propose an alternative construction, which again polarizes in multi-levels, and the previous upper bound on the number of preshared EPR pairs also holds. For a quantum erasure channel, we confirm by numerical analysis that the multilevel polarization happens relatively faster for the alternative construction.
We introduce a new set of quantum channels: resonant multilevel amplitude damping (ReMAD) channels. Among other instances, they can describe energy dissipation effects in multilevel atomic systems induced by the interaction with a zero-temperature bosonic environment. At variance with the already known class of multilevel amplitude damping (MAD) channels, this new class of maps allows the presence of an environment unable to discriminate transitions with identical energy gaps. After characterizing the algebra of their composition rules, by analyzing the qutrit case, we show that this new set o…
A recent method to certify the classical capacity of quantum communication channels is applied for general damping channels in finite dimension. The method compares the mutual information obtained by coding on the computational and a Fourier basis, which can be obtained by just two local measurement settings and classical optimization. The results for large representative classes of different damping structures are presented.
We study spontaneous emission from an atom under the action of laser fields. We consider two different energy level diagrams. The first one consists of two levels resonantly driven by laser radiation where either of levels may decay to a separate level. For such a system we show that the presence of the second decay channel may deteriorate the destructive interference occurring in case of one decay channel because of Autler-Townes effect. The second diagram represents two two-level resonantly driven systems with the upper levels decaying to a common level. For this diagram we show that there i…
Optimally extracting information from measurements performed on a physical system requires an accurate model of the measurement interaction. Continuously probing the collective spin of an Alkali atom cloud via its interaction with an off-resonant optical probe is an important example of such a measurement where realistic modeling at the quantum level is possible using standard techniques from atomic physics. Typically, however, tutorial descriptions of this technique have neglected the multilevel structure of realistic atoms for the sake of simplification. In this paper we account for the full…
Remote information concentration (RIC) in $d$-level systems (qudits) is studied. It is shown that the quantum information initially distributed in three spatially separated qudits can be remotely and deterministically concentrated to a single qudit via an entangled channel without performing any global operations. The entangled channel can be different types of genuine multipartite pure entangled states which are inequivalent under local operations and classical communication. The entangled channel can also be a mixed entangled state, even a bound entangled state which has a similar form to th…
Being attracted by the property of classical polar code, researchers are trying to find its analogue in quantum fields, which is called quantum polar code. The first step and the key to design quantum polar code is to find out for the quantity which can measure the quality of quantum channels, whether there is a polarization phenomenon which is similar to classical channel polarization. Coherent information is believed to be the quantum analogue of classical mutual information and the quantity to measure the capacity of quantum channel. In this paper, we define a class of quantum channels call…
The faithful distribution of entanglement over noisy channels is a vital prerequisite for many quantum technological applications. Quantum information can be encoded in different degrees of freedom (DOF) of photons, where each encoding comes with its own advantages and disadvantages with respect to noise resilience and practicality in manipulation. In this work, we experimentally implement a deterministic entanglement purification protocol that allows us to faithfully distribute entanglement in one DOF over a noisy channel and then remotely transfer it to another DOF for manipulation. In parti…
We investigate the polarization state dynamics of single photon pulse for optical fiber quantum communication channels. On the basis of a birefringence vector model in which amplitude and direction are both stochastic variables, Jones vector is obtained by solving the frequency domain wave equation. The fidelity of output quantum state and degree of polarization of the pulse are also obtained from the density operators. It is shown that the fidelity of quantum state decreases quickly and tends to a stable value along optical fiber, and increases for larger mean fluctuation magnitude of the sto…
We provide a purely quantum version of polar codes, achieving the symmetric coherent information of any qubit-input quantum channel. Our scheme relies on a recursive channel combining and splitting construction, where a two-qubit gate randomly chosen from the Clifford group is used to combine two single-qubit channels. The inputs to the synthesized bad channels are frozen by preshared EPR pairs between the sender and the receiver, so our scheme is entanglement assisted. We further show that quantum polarization can be achieved by choosing the channel combining Clifford operator randomly, from …
The coherence between quantum states with different particle numbers --- the Fock-space coherence --- qualitatively differs from the more common Hilbert-space coherence between states with equal particle numbers. For a quantum dot with multiple channels available for transport, we find the conditions for decoupling the dynamics of the Fock-space coherence from both the Hilbert-space coherence as well as the population dynamics. We further find specific energy and coupling regimes where a long-lived resonance in the Fock-space coherence of the system is realized, even where no resonances are fo…
Most polarization-based BB84 quantum key distribution (QKD) systems utilize multiple lasers to generate one of four polarization quantum states randomly. However, random bit generation with multiple lasers can potentially open critical side channels, which significantly endangers the security of QKD systems. In this paper, we show unnoticed side channels of temporal disparity and intensity fluctuation, which possibly exist in the operation of multiple semiconductor laser diodes. Experimental results show that the side channels can enormously degrade security performance of QKD systems. An impo…
Quantum networks entangle remote nodes by distributing quantum states, which inevitably suffer from decoherence while traversing quantum channels. Pertinent decoherence mechanisms govern the channel capacity, its reach, and the quality and rate of distributed entanglement. Hence recognizing, understanding, and modeling those mechanisms is a crucial step in building quantum networks. Here, we study practical fiber-optic quantum channels that partially filter individual modes of transmitted polarization entangled states and are capable of introducing dephasing. First, we theoretically model and …
Superpositions of two orthogonal single-photon polarization states are commonly used as optical qubits. If such qubits are sent by continuous variable quantum teleportation, the modifications of the qubit states due to imperfect entanglement cause an increase in the average photon number of the output state. This effect can be interpreted as an accidental quantum cloning of the single photon input. We analyze the output statistics of the single photon teleportation and derive the transfer and cloning fidelities from the equations of the polarization qubit.
We investigate the properties of an atmospheric channel for free space quantum communication with continuous polarization variables. In our prepare-and-measure setup, coherent polarization states are transmitted through an atmospheric quantum channel of 100m length on the roof of our institute's building. The signal states are measured by homodyne detection with the help of a local oscillator (LO) which propagates in the same spatial mode as the signal, orthogonally polarized to it. Thus the interference of signal and LO is excellent and atmospheric fluctuations are autocompensated. The LO als…
We present two polarization-based protocols for quantum key distribution. The protocols encode key bits in noiseless subspaces or subsystems, and so can function over a quantum channel subjected to an arbitrary degree of collective noise, as occurs, for instance, due to rotation of polarizations in an optical fiber. These protocols can be implemented using only entangled photon-pair sources, single-photon rotations, and single-photon detectors. Thus, our proposals offer practical and realistic alternatives to existing schemes for quantum key distribution over optical fibers without resorting t…
We introduce a spin polarization-scaling map for spin-$j$ particles, whose physical meaning is the decrease of spin polarization along three mutually orthogonal axes. We find conditions on three scaling parameters under which the map is positive, completely positive, entanglement breaking, 2-tensor-stable positive, and 2-locally entanglement annihilating. The results are specified for maps on spin-$1$ particles. The difference from the case of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles is emphasized.
We report a novel and simple approach for generating near-perfect quality polarization entanglement in a fully guided-wave fashion. Both deterministic pair separation into two adjacent telecommunication channels and the paired photons' temporal walk-off compensation are achieved using standard fiber components. Two-photon interference experiments are performed, both for quantitatively demonstrating the relevance of our approach, and for manipulating the produced state between bosonic and fermionic symmetries. The compactness, versatility, and reliability of this configuration makes it a potent…
Spatial light modulators are versatile devices employed in a vast range of applications to modify the transverse phase or amplitude profile of an incident light beam. Most experiments are designed to use a specific polarization which renders optimal sensitivity for phase or amplitude modulation. Here we take a different approach and apply the formalism of quantum information to characterize how a phase modulator affects a general polarization state. In this context, the spatial modulators can be exploited as a resource to couple the polarization and the transverse spatial degrees of freedom. U…
We consider the decoherence of photons suffering in phase-damping channels. By exploring the evolutions of single-photon polarization states and two-photon polarization-entangled states, we find that different frequency spectrum envelopes of photons induce different decoherence processes. A white frequency spectrum can lead the decoherence to an ideal Markovian process. Some color frequency spectrums can induce asymptotical decoherence, while, some other color frequency spectrums can make coherence vanish periodically with variable revival amplitudes. These behaviors result from the non-Markov…
Side channel effects such as temporal disparity and intensity fluctuation of photon pulses caused by random bit generation with multiple laser diodes in high-speed polarization-based BB84 quantum key distribution (QKD) systems can be eliminated by increasing DC bias current condition. However, background photons caused by the spontaneous emission process under high DC bias current degrade the performance of the QKD systems. In this study, we investigated, for the first time, the effects of spontaneously emitted photons on the system performance in a high-speed QKD system at a clock rate of 400…
We introduce a quantum channel describing photon losses depending on the degree of polarization mixedness. This can be regarded as a model of quantum channel with correlated errors between discrete and continuous degrees of freedom. We consider classical information over a continuous alphabet encoded on weak coherent states as well as classical information over a discrete alphabet encoded on single photons using dual rail representation. In both cases we study the one-shot capacity of the channel and its behaviour in terms of correlation between losses and polarization mixedness.
We report an experiment in which long-lived quantum memories for photonic polarization qubits (PPQs) are controllably released into any one of multiple separate channels. The PPQs are implemented with an arbitrarily-polarized coherent signal light pulses at the single-photon level and are stored in cold atoms by means of electromagnetic-induced-transparency scheme. Reading laser pulses propagating along the direction at a small angle relative to quantum axis are applied to release the stored PPQs into an output channel. By changing the propagating directions of the read laser beam, we controll…
Original quantum repeater protocols based on single-photon interference suffer from phase noise of the channel, which makes the long-distance quantum communication infeasible. Fortunately, two-photon interference type quantum repeaters can be immune to phase noise of the channel. However, this type quantum repeaters may still suffer from polarization disturbance of the channel. Here we propose a quantum repeaters protocol which is free of polarization disturbance of the channel based on the invariance of the anti-symmetric Bell state $|ψ^->=(|H>|V>-|V>|H>)/\sqrt{2}$ under collective noise. Our…
Phase modulation has emerged as a technique to create and manipulate high-dimensional frequency-bin entanglement. A necessary step to extending this technique to depolarized channels, such as those in a quantum networking environment, is the ability to perform phase modulation independent of photon polarization. This also necessary to harness hypertanglement in the polarization and frequency degrees of freedom for operations like Bell state discrimination. However, practical phase modulators are generally sensitive to the polarization of light and this makes them unsuited to such applications.…
The development and wide application of quantum technologies highly depend on the capacity of the communication channels distributing entanglement. Space-division multiplexing (SDM) enhanced channel capacities in classical telecommunication and bears the potential to transfer the idea to quantum communication using current infrastructure. Here, we demonstrate an SDM of polarization-entangled photons over a 411m long 19-core multicore fiber distributing polarization-entangled photon pairs through up to 12 channels simultaneously. The quality of the multiplexed transfer is evidenced by high pola…
We discuss the quantum information channel, which is based on coherent and polarization sensitive interaction of light and atomic spin waves. We show that the joint Heisenberg dynamics of the polarization Stokes components of light and of the angular momenta of atoms has a wave nature and can be properly described in terms of the macroscopic polariton-type spin wave created in the sample. The principles of the quantum memory and readout protocols via the wave coupling of the output time modes in the light subsystem and the output spatial modes in the spin subsystem are demonstrated.
