The classical Hennessy-Milner theorem says that two states of an image-finite transition system are bisimilar if and only if they satisfy the same formulas in a certain modal logic. In this paper we study this type of result in a general context, moving from transition systems to coalgebras and from bisimilarity to coinductive predicates. We formulate when a logic fully characterises a coinductive predicate on coalgebras, by providing suitable notions of adequacy and expressivity, and give sufficient conditions on the semantics. The approach is illustrated with logics characterising similarity, divergence and a behavioural metric on automata.
We formulate a framework for describing behaviour of effectful higher-order recursive programs. Examples of effects are implemented using effect operations, and include: execution cost, nondeterminism, global store and interaction with a user. The denotational semantics of a program is given by a coinductive tree in a monad, which combines potential return values of the program in terms of effect operations. Using a simple test logic, we construct two sorts of predicate liftings, which lift predicates on a result type to predicates on computations that produce results of that type, each captur…
Recursive definitions of predicates are usually interpreted either inductively or coinductively. Recently, a more powerful approach has been proposed, called flexible coinduction, to express a variety of intermediate interpretations, necessary in some cases to get the correct meaning. We provide a detailed formal account of an extension of logic programming supporting flexible coinduction. Syntactically, programs are enriched by coclauses, clauses with a special meaning used to tune the interpretation of predicates. As usual, the declarative semantics can be expressed as a fixed point which, h…

The coincidence between initial algebras (IAs) and final coalgebras (FCs) is a phenomenon that underpins various important results in theoretical computer science. In this paper, we identify a general fibrational condition for the IA-FC coincidence, namely in the fiber over an initial algebra in the base category. Identifying (co)algebras in a fiber as (co)inductive predicates, our fibrational IA-FC coincidence allows one to use coinductive witnesses (such as invariants) for verifying inductive properties (such as liveness). Our general fibrational theory features the technical condition of st…
Two results are presented concerning the entailment problem in Separation Logic with inductively defined predicate symbols and theory reasoning. First, we show that the entailment problem is undecidable for rules with bounded tree-width, if theory reasoning is considered. The result holds for a wide class of theories, even with a very low expressive power. For instance it applies to the natural numbers with the successor function, or with the usual order. Second, we show that every entailment problem can be reduced to an entailment problem containing no equality (neither in the formulas nor in…
Temporal stream logic (TSL) extends LTL with updates and predicates over arbitrary function terms. This allows for specifying data-intensive systems for which LTL is not expressive enough. In the semantics of TSL, functions and predicates are left uninterpreted. In this paper, we extend TSL with first-order theories, enabling us to specify systems using interpreted functions and predicates such as incrementation or equality. We investigate the satisfiability problem of TSL modulo the standard underlying theory of uninterpreted functions as well as with respect to Presburger arithmetic and the …
An efficient entailment proof system is essential to compositional verification using separation logic. Unfortunately, existing decision procedures are either inexpressive or inefficient. For example, Smallfoot is an efficient procedure but only works with hardwired lists and trees. Other procedures that can support general inductive predicates run exponentially in time as their proof search requires back-tracking to deal with a disjunction in the consequent. This paper presents a decision procedure to derive cyclic entailment proofs for general inductive predicates in polynomial time. Our pro…
We introduce a general and compositional, yet simple, framework that allows us to derive soundness and expressiveness results for modal logics characterizing behavioural equivalences or metrics (also known as Hennessy-Milner theorems). It is based on Galois connections between sets of (real-valued) predicates on the one hand and equivalence relations/metrics on the other hand and covers a part of the linear-time-branching-time spectrum, both for the qualitative case (behavioural equivalences) and the quantitative case (behavioural metrics). We derive behaviour functions from a given logic and …

State constraints in AI Planning globally restrict the legal environment states. Standard planning languages make closed-domain and closed-world assumptions. Here we address open-world state constraints formalized by planning over a description logic (DL) ontology. Previously, this combination of DL and planning has been investigated for the light-weight DL DL-Lite. Here we propose a novel compilation scheme into standard PDDL with derived predicates, which applies to more expressive DLs and is based on the rewritability of DL queries into Datalog with stratified negation. We also provide a ne…
