Instance level detection of thoracic diseases or abnormalities are crucial for automatic diagnosis in chest X-ray images. Most existing works on chest X-rays focus on disease classification and weakly supervised localization. In order to push forward the research on disease classification and localization on chest X-rays. We provide a new benchmark called ChestX-Det10, including box-level annotations of 10 categories of disease/abnormality of $\sim$ 3,500 images. The annotations are located at https://github.com/Deepwise-AILab/ChestX-Det10-Dataset.

The detection of thoracic abnormalities challenge is organized by the Deepwise AI Lab. The challenge is divided into two rounds. In this paper, we present the results of 6 teams which reach the second round. The challenge adopts the ChestX-Det10 dateset proposed by the Deepwise AI Lab. ChestX-Det10 is the first chest X-Ray dataset with instance-level annotations, including 10 categories of disease/abnormality of 3,543 images. The annotations are located at https://github.com/Deepwise-AILab/ChestX-Det10-Dataset. In the challenge, we randomly split all data into 3001 images for training and 542 …

Instance level detection and segmentation of thoracic diseases or abnormalities are crucial for automatic diagnosis in chest X-ray images. Leveraging on constant structure and disease relations extracted from domain knowledge, we propose a structure-aware relation network (SAR-Net) extending Mask R-CNN. The SAR-Net consists of three relation modules: 1. the anatomical structure relation module encoding spatial relations between diseases and anatomical parts. 2. the contextual relation module aggregating clues based on query-key pair of disease RoI and lung fields. 3. the disease relation modul…

The chest X-ray is one of the most commonly accessible radiological examinations for screening and diagnosis of many lung diseases. A tremendous number of X-ray imaging studies accompanied by radiological reports are accumulated and stored in many modern hospitals' Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). On the other side, it is still an open question how this type of hospital-size knowledge database containing invaluable imaging informatics (i.e., loosely labeled) can be used to facilitate the data-hungry deep learning paradigms in building truly large-scale high precision compute…

Convolutional neural networks are showing promise in the automatic diagnosis of thoracic pathologies on chest x-rays. Their black-box nature has sparked many recent works to explain the prediction via input feature attribution methods (aka saliency methods). However, input feature attribution methods merely identify the importance of input regions for the prediction and lack semantic interpretation of model behavior. In this work, we first identify the semantics associated with internal units (feature maps) of the network. We proceed to investigate the following questions; Does a regression mo…

The use of ImageNet pre-trained networks is becoming widespread in the medical imaging community. It enables training on small datasets, commonly available in medical imaging tasks. The recent emergence of a large Chest X-ray dataset opened the possibility for learning features that are specific to the X-ray analysis task. In this work, we demonstrate that the features learned allow for better classification results for the problem of Tuberculosis detection and enable generalization to an unseen dataset. To accomplish the task of feature learning, we train a DenseNet-121 CNN on 112K images fro…

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe change in accuracies of convolutional neural networks (CNN) models (ratio of correct classifications to total predictions) on thoracic radiological images by creating different binary classification models based on age, gender, and image pre-processing filters on 14 pathologies. Methodology: This is a quantitative research exploring variation in CNN model accuracies. Radiological thoracic images were divided by age and gender and pre-processed by various image processing filters. Findings: We found partial support for enhancement to model accur…

Chest x-rays are the most common radiology studies for diagnosing lung and heart disease. Hence, a system for automated pre-reporting of pathologic findings on chest x-rays would greatly enhance radiologists' productivity. To this end, we investigate a deep-learning framework with novel training schemes for classification of different thoracic pathology labels from chest x-rays. We use the currently largest publicly available annotated dataset ChestX-ray14 of 112,120 chest radiographs of 30,805 patients. Each image was annotated with either a 'NoFinding' class, or one or more of 14 thoracic pa…

Chest radiography (CXR) is the most widely-used thoracic clinical imaging modality and is crucial for guiding the management of cardiothoracic conditions. The detection of specific CXR findings has been the main focus of several artificial intelligence (AI) systems. However, the wide range of possible CXR abnormalities makes it impractical to build specific systems to detect every possible condition. In this work, we developed and evaluated an AI system to classify CXRs as normal or abnormal. For development, we used a de-identified dataset of 248,445 patients from a multi-city hospital networ…

Chest X-ray (CXR) is a widely performed radiology examination that helps to detect abnormalities in the tissues and organs in the thoracic cavity. Detecting pulmonary abnormalities like COVID-19 may become difficult due to that they are obscured by the presence of bony structures like the ribs and the clavicles, thereby resulting in screening/diagnostic misinterpretations. Automated bone suppression methods would help suppress these bony structures and increase soft tissue visibility. In this study, we propose to build an ensemble of convolutional neural network models to suppress bones in fro…

The lack of fine-grained annotations hinders the deployment of automated diagnosis systems, which require human-interpretable justification for their decision process. In this paper, we address the problem of weakly supervised identification and localization of abnormalities in chest radiographs. To that end, we introduce a novel loss function for training convolutional neural networks increasing the \emph{localization confidence} and assisting the overall \emph{disease identification}. The loss leverages both image- and patch-level predictions to generate auxiliary supervision. Rather than fo…
Cardiomegaly is indeed a medical disease in which the heart is enlarged. Cardiomegaly is better to handle if caught early, so early detection is critical. The chest X-ray, being one of the most often used radiography examinations, has been used to detect and visualize abnormalities of human organs for decades. X-ray is also a significant medical diagnosis tool for cardiomegaly. Even for domain experts, distinguishing the many types of diseases from the X-ray is a difficult and time-consuming task. Deep learning models are also most effective when used on huge data sets, yet due to privacy conc…
