Control theory provides engineers with a multitude of tools to design controllers that manipulate the closed-loop behavior and stability of dynamical systems. These methods rely heavily on insights about the mathematical model governing the physical system. However, in complex systems, such as autonomous underwater vehicles performing the dual objective of path-following and collision avoidance, decision making becomes non-trivial. We propose a solution using state-of-the-art Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) techniques, to develop autonomous agents capable of achieving this hybrid objective without having à priori knowledge about the goal or the environment. Our results demonstrate the viability of DRL in path-following and avoiding collisions toward achieving human-level decision making in autonomous vehicle systems within extreme obstacle configurations.

We design and experimentally evaluate a hybrid safe-by-construction collision avoidance controller for autonomous vehicles. The controller combines into a single architecture the respective advantages of an adaptive controller and a discrete safe controller. The adaptive controller relies on model predictive control to achieve optimal efficiency in nominal conditions. The safe controller avoids collision by applying two different policies, for nominal and out-of-nominal conditions, respectively. We present design principles for both the adaptive and the safe controller and show how each one ca…

This work combines control barrier functions (CBFs) with a whole-body controller to enable self-collision avoidance for the MIT Humanoid. Existing reactive controllers for self-collision avoidance cannot guarantee collision-free trajectories as they do not leverage the robot's full dynamics, thus compromising kinematic feasibility. In comparison, the proposed CBF-WBC controller can reason about the robot's underactuated dynamics in real-time to guarantee collision-free motions. The effectiveness of this approach is validated in simulation. First, a simple hand-reaching experiment shows that th…

Neural networks serve as effective controllers in a variety of complex settings due to their ability to represent expressive policies. The complex nature of neural networks, however, makes their output difficult to verify and predict, which limits their use in safety-critical applications. While simulations provide insight into the performance of neural network controllers, they are not enough to guarantee that the controller will perform safely in all scenarios. To address this problem, recent work has focused on formal methods to verify properties of neural network outputs. For neural networ…
Safety in terms of collision avoidance for multi-robot systems is a difficult challenge under uncertainty, non-determinism and lack of complete information. This paper aims to propose a collision avoidance method that accounts for both measurement uncertainty and motion uncertainty. In particular, we propose Probabilistic Safety Barrier Certificates (PrSBC) using Control Barrier Functions to define the space of admissible control actions that are probabilistically safe with formally provable theoretical guarantee. By formulating the chance constrained safety set into deterministic control cons…

Biological evidence shows that animals are capable of evading eminent collision without using depth information, relying solely on looming stimuli. In robotics, collision avoidance among uncooperative vehicles requires measurement of relative distance to the obstacle. Small, low-cost mobile robots and UAVs might be unable to carry distance measuring sensors, like LIDARS and depth cameras. We propose a control framework suitable for a unicycle-like vehicle moving in a 2D plane that achieves collision avoidance. The control strategy is inspired by the reaction of invertebrates to approaching obs…
There are many situations for which an unmanned ground vehicle has to work with only partial observability of the environment. Therefore, a feasible nonholonomic obstacle avoidance and target tracking action must be generated immediately based on the real-time perceptual information. This paper presents a robust approach to integrating VPH+ (enhanced vector polar histogram) and MPC (model predictive control). VPH+ is applied to calculate the desired direction for its environment perception ability and computational efficiency, while MPC is explored to perform a constrained model-predictive tra…
In this paper, we present an on-board vision-based approach for avoidance of moving obstacles in dynamic environments. Our approach relies on an efficient obstacle detection and tracking algorithm based on depth image pairs, which provides the estimated position, velocity and size of the obstacles. Robust collision avoidance is achieved by formulating a chance-constrained model predictive controller (CC-MPC) to ensure that the collision probability between the micro aerial vehicle (MAV) and each moving obstacle is below a specified threshold. The method takes into account MAV dynamics, state e…
A collision avoidance system based on simple digital cameras would help enable the safe integration of small UAVs into crowded, low-altitude environments. In this work, we present an obstacle avoidance system for small UAVs that uses a monocular camera with a hybrid neural network and path planner controller. The system is comprised of a vision network for estimating depth from camera images, a high-level control network, a collision prediction network, and a contingency policy. This system is evaluated on a simulated UAV navigating an obstacle course in a constrained flight pattern. Results s…
Collision avoidance algorithms are of central interest to many drone applications. In particular, decentralized approaches may be the key to enabling robust drone swarm solutions in cases where centralized communication becomes computationally prohibitive. In this work, we draw biological inspiration from flocks of starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and apply the insight to end-to-end learned decentralized collision avoidance. More specifically, we propose a new, scalable observation model following a biomimetic nearest-neighbor information constraint that leads to fast learning and good collision a…

Humans are remarkable at navigating and moving through dynamic and complex spaces, such as crowded streets. For robots to do the same, it is crucial that they are endowed with highly reactive obstacle avoidance robust to partial and poor sensing. We address the issue of enabling obstacle avoidance based on sparse and asynchronous perception. The proposed control scheme combines a high-level input command provided by either a planner or a human operator with fast reactive obstacle avoidance. The sampling-based sensor data can be combined with an analytical reconstruction of the obstacles for re…

We present a hierarchical control approach for maneuvering an autonomous vehicle (AV) in tightly-constrained environments where other moving AVs and/or human driven vehicles are present. A two-level hierarchy is proposed: a high-level data-driven strategy predictor and a lower-level model-based feedback controller. The strategy predictor maps an encoding of a dynamic environment to a set of high-level strategies via a neural network. Depending on the selected strategy, a set of time-varying hyperplanes in the AV's position space is generated online and the corresponding halfspace constraints a…
Soft underwater robots typically explore bioinspired designs at the expense of power efficiency when compared to traditional underwater robots, which limits their practical use in real-world applications. We leverage a fluidic closed-loop controller to actuate a passive underwater glider. A soft hydrostatic pressure sensor is configured as a bangbang controller actuating a swim bladder made from silicone balloons. Our underwater glider oscillates between the water surface and 4 m depth while traveling 15 m translational. The fluidic underwater glider demonstrates a power efficiency of 28 mW/m.…
This paper considers the problem of parameter identification for a multirobot system. We wish to understand when is it feasible for an adversarial observer to reverse-engineer the parameters of tasks being performed by a team of robots by simply observing their positions. We address this question by using the concept of persistency of excitation from system identification. Each robot in the team uses optimization-based controllers for mediating between task satisfaction and collision avoidance. These controllers exhibit an implicit dependence on the task's parameters which poses a hurdle for d…

Formation and collision avoidance abilities are essential for multi-agent systems. Conventional methods usually require a central controller and global information to achieve collaboration, which is impractical in an unknown environment. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based distributed formation control scheme for autonomous vehicles. A modified stream-based obstacle avoidance method is applied to smoothen the optimal trajectory, and onboard sensors such as Lidar and antenna arrays are used to obtain local relative distance and angle information. The proposed sch…

A tracking controller for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is developed to track moving targets undergoing unknown translational and rotational motions. The main challenges are to control both the relative positions and angles between the target and the UAVs to within desired values, and to guarantee that the generated control inputs to the UAVs are feasible (i.e., within their motion capabilities). Moreover, the UAVs are controlled to ensure that the target always remains within the fields of view of their onboard cameras. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to apply multiple …

Nowadays an accurate modeling of the system to be controlled is essential for reliable autopilot. This paper presents a non-linear model of the autonomous underwater vehicle 'CWolf'. Matrices and the corresponding coefficients generate a parameterized representation for added mass, Coriolis and centripetal forces, damping, gravity and buoyancy, using the equations of motion, for all six degrees of freedom. The determination of actuator behaviour by surge tests allows the conversion of propeller revolutions to the respective forces and moments. Based on geometric approximations, the coefficient…
The underwater environment poses a complex problem for developing autonomous capabilities for Underwater Vehicle Manipulator Systems (UVMSs). The modeling of UVMSs is a complicated and costly process due to the highly nonlinear dynamics and the presence of unknown hydrodynamical effects. This is aggravated in tasks where the manipulation of objects is necessary, as this may not only introduce external disturbances that can lead to a fast degradation of the control system performance, but also requires the coordinating with a vision system for the correct grasping and operation of the object. I…

In this paper we propose an algorithm for the training of neural network control policies for quadrotors. The learned control policy computes control commands directly from sensor inputs and is hence computationally efficient. An imitation learning algorithm produces a policy that reproduces the behavior of a path following control algorithm with collision avoidance. Due to the generalization ability of neural networks, the resulting policy performs local collision avoidance of unseen obstacles while following a global reference path. The algorithm uses a time-free model predictive path-follow…
