We study the alignment of radio galaxies axes using the FIRST catalogue. we impose several cuts in order to select the candidates which are most likely to be free of systematic bias. In our study we primarily focus on testing for alignment among sources within a certain angular separation from one another since for most sources redshift information is not available. We find a very significant effect for angular distances less than 1 degrees. The distance scale of alignment is found to be roughly 28 Mpc, in agreement with earlier estimates, assuming that these sources are dominantly at redshift of 0.8. However we are not able to entirely rule out the possibility of systematic bias in data. We also perform a full three dimensional analysis using a smaller data sample for which redshift information is available. In this case we only find a very weak signal at much larger distances.
Large scale tidal field estimated directly from the distribution of dark matter halos is used to investigate how halo shapes and spin vectors are aligned with the cosmic web. The major, intermediate and minor axes of halos are aligned with the corresponding tidal axes, and halo spin axes tend to be parallel with the intermediate axes and perpendicular to the major axes of tidal field. The strengths of these alignments generally increase with halo mass and redshift, but the dependencies are only through the peak height, ν. The scaling relations of the alignment strengths with the value of ν ind…
We compare the statistics of parity even and odd multipoles of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky from PLANCK full mission temperature measurements. An excess power in odd multipoles compared to even multipoles has previously been found on large angular scales. Motivated by this apparent parity asymmetry, we evaluate directional statistics associated with even compared to odd multipoles, along with their significances. Primary tools are the \emph{Power Tensor} and \emph{Alignment Tensor} statistics. We limit our analysis to the first sixty multipoles i.e., $l=[2,61]$. We find no evidenc…
We measure the large-scale intrinsic alignments of galaxy clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) using subsets of two cluster catalogues: 6625 clusters with 0.1<z<0.3 from the maxBCG cluster catalogue (Koester et al. 2007, 7500 sq. deg.), and 8081 clusters with 0.08<z<0.44 from the Adaptive Matched Filter catalogue (Dong et al. 2008, 6500 sq. deg.). We search for two types of cluster alignments using pairs of clusters: the alignment between the projected major axes of the clusters (`correlation' alignment), and the alignment between one cluster major axis and the line connecting it to…
Correlated orientations of quasar optical and radio polarisation, and of radio jets, have been reported on Gpc scales, possibly arising from intrinsic alignment of spin axes. Optical quasar polarisation appears to be preferentially either aligned or orthogonal to the host large-scale structure, specifically large quasar groups (LQGs). Using a sample of 71 LQGs at redshifts $1.0 \leq z \leq 1.8$, we investigate whether LQGs themselves exhibit correlated orientation. We find that LQG position angles (PAs) are unlikely to be drawn from a uniform distribution ($p$-values $0.008 \lesssim p \lesssim…
Based on galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and subhalos in the corresponding reconstructed region from the constrained simulation of ELUCID, we study the alignment of central galaxies relative to their host groups in the group catalog, as well as the alignment relative to the corresponding subhalos in the ELUCID simulation. Galaxies in observation are matched to dark matter subhalos in the ELUCID simulation using a novel neighborhood abundance matching method. In observation, the major axes of galaxies are found to be preferentially aligned to the major axes of their host group…
Tidal torque theory suggests that galaxies gain angular momentum in the linear stage of structure formation. Such a theory predicts alignments between the spin of haloes and tidal shear field. However, non-linear evolution and angular momentum acquisition may alter this prediction significantly. In this paper, we use a reconstruction of the cosmic shear field from observed peculiar velocities combined with spin axes extracted from galaxies within $115\, \mathrm{Mpc} $ ($\sim8000 \, {\mathrm {km}}{\mathrm s}^{-1}$) from 2MRS catalog, to test whether or not galaxies appear aligned with principal…
Galaxies are not distributed randomly in the cosmic web but are instead arranged in filaments and sheets surrounding cosmic voids. Observationally there is still no convincing evidence of a link between the properties of galaxies and their host structures. However, by the tidal torque theory (our understanding of the origin of galaxy angular momentum), such a link should exist. Using the presently largest spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey (SDSS) we study the connection between the spin axes of galaxies and the orientation of their host filaments. We use a three dimensional field of orientat…
The decay of non-topological electroweak strings formed during the electroweak phase transition in the early universe may leave an observable imprint in the universe today. Such strings can naturally seed primordial magnetic fields. Protogalaxies then tend to form with their axis of rotation parallel to the external magnetic field, and moreover, the external magnetic field produces torque which forces the galaxy axis to align with the magnetic field, even if the two axis were not aligned initially. This can explain an (observed, but as of yet unexplained) alignment of the quasars' polarization…
Recently, evidence has been presented for the polarization vectors from quasars to preferentially align with the axes of the large quasar groups (LQG) to which they belong. This report was based on observations made at optical wavelengths for two large quasar groups at redshift $\sim 1.3$. The correlation suggests that the spin axes of quasars preferentially align with their surrounding large-scale structure that is assumed to be traced by the LQGs. Here, we consider a large sample of LQGs built from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 quasar catalogue in the redshift range $1.0-1.8$. For quasars…
We provide a set of general tools for studying the alignments of dark matter halos and galaxies with respect to the large scale structure. The statistics of the positioning of these objects is represented by a Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of their Euler angles. The PDF corresponding to halos located in the shells of the cosmic voids is inferred from previous results. This PDF is used to show how to recover the outcomes found for the alignments of the axes of these halos in simulations. We also explore the orientation of the angular momentum of the halos, both with respect to the hal…
Galaxies properties are known to be affected by their environment. One important question is how their angular momentum reflects the surrounding cosmic web. We use the SDSS to investigate the spin axes of spiral and elliptical galaxies relative to their surrounding filament/sheet orientations. To detect filaments a marked point process with interactions (the "Bisous model") is used. Sheets are found by detecting "flattened" filaments. The minor axes of ellipticals are found to be preferentially perpendicular to hosting filaments. A weak correlation is found with sheets. These findings are cons…
Accurate mock catalogues are essential for assessing systematics in the cosmological analysis of large galaxy surveys. Anisotropic two-point clustering measurements from the same simulation show some scatter for different lines of sight (LOS), but are on average equal, due to cosmic variance. This results in scatter in the measured cosmological parameters. We use the OuterRim N-body simulation halo catalogue to investigate this, considering the 3 simulation axes as LOS. The quadrupole of the 2-point statistics is particularly sensitive to changes in the LOS, with sub-percent level differences …
We present measurements of the triaxial dark matter halo shapes and alignment correlation functions in the Millennium and Millennium-2 dark matter N-body simulations. These two simulations allow us to measure the distributions of halo shapes down to 10% of the virial radius over a halo mass range of 6E9 - 2E14 M_sun/h. We largely confirm previous results on the distributions of halo axis ratios as a function of halo mass, but we find that the median angle between halo major axes at different halo radii can vary by a factor of 2 between the Millennium-1 and 2 simulations because of the differen…

Using a sample of galaxy groups selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we examine the alignment between the orientation of galaxies and their surrounding large scale structure in the context of the cosmic web. The latter is quantified using the large-scale tidal field, reconstructed from the data using galaxy groups above a certain mass threshold. We find that the major axes of galaxies in filaments tend to be preferentially aligned with the directions of the filaments, while galaxies in sheets have their major axes preferentially aligned parallel to the plane of…
Multiple observations made by several different telescopes have shown asymmetry between the number of spiral galaxies rotating in opposite directions in different parts of the sky. One of the immediate questions regarding the possible asymmetry of the spin directions is whether the distribution forms a cosmological-scale axis. This paper analyzes and compares 10 different datasets published in the past decade, collected by SDSS, Pan-STARRS, and Hubble Space Telescope. The datasets contain spiral galaxies separated by their spin direction, and the distribution can show dipole axes. The analysis…
We present a numerical evidence supporting the scenario that the peculiar alignments of the galaxy stellar spins with the major principal axes of the local tidal tensors are produced during the quiescent evolution period when the galaxies experience no recent merger events. Analyzing the merger tree from the TNG300-1 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project, we find the latest merger epochs, $a(z_{m})$, of the galaxies, and create four $a(z_{m})$-selected samples that are controlled to share the identical mass and density distributions. For each sample, we determine the spin and shape vectors of…
We use a global pixel based estimator to identify the axis of the residual Maximum Temperature Asymmetry (MTA) (after the dipole subtraction) of the WMAP 7 year Internal Linear Combination (ILC) CMB temperature sky map. The estimator is based on considering the temperature differences between opposite pixels in the sky at various angular resolutions (4 degrees-15 degrees and selecting the axis that maximizes this difference. We consider three large scale Healpix resolutions (N_{side}=16 (3.7 degrees), N_{side}=8 (7.3 degrees) and N_{side}=4 (14.7 degrees)). We compare the direction and magnitu…
[Abridged] We use the ATLAS3D sample of 260 early-type galaxies (ETGs) to study the apparent kinematic misalignment angle, Psi, defined as the angle between the photometric and kinematic major axis. We find that 71% of nearby ETGs are strictly aligned systems (Psi > 5 deg), an additional 14% have 5 < Psi < 10 deg and 90% of galaxies have Psi < 15 deg. Taking into account measurement uncertainties, 90% of galaxies can be considered aligned to better than 5 deg, suggesting that only a small fraction of early-type galaxies (~10%) are not consistent with axisymmetry within the projected half-light…
In this paper we use high-resolution cosmological simulations to study halo intrinsic alignment and its dependence on mass, formation time and large-scale environment. In agreement with previous studies using N-body simulations, it is found that massive halos have stronger alignment. For given mass, older halos have stronger alignment than younger ones. By identifying the cosmic environment of halo using Hessian matrix, we find that for given mass, halos in cluster regions also have stronger alignment than those in filament. The existing theory has not addressed these dependencies explicitly. …
Using a sample of spiral galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) and Galaxy Zoo 2 (GZ2), we investigate the alignment of spin axes of spiral galaxies with their surrounding large scale structure, which is characterized by the large-scale tidal field reconstructed from the data using galaxy groups above a certain mass threshold. We find that the spin axes of only have weak tendency to be aligned with (or perpendicular to) the intermediate (or minor) axis of the local tidal tensor. The signal is the strongest in a \cluster environment where all the three eig…
In this paper we analyse the alignment of galaxy groups with the surrounding large scale structure traced by spectroscopic galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We characterise these alignments by means of an extension of the classical two-point cross-correlation function, developed by Paz et al. 2008 (arXiv:0804.4477, MNRAS 389 1127). We find a strong alignment signal between the projected major axis of group shapes and the surrounding galaxy distribution up to scales of 30 Mpc/h. This observed anisotropy signal becomes larger as the galaxy group mass increases, in excell…
The consistency level of LCDM with geometrical data probes has been increasing with time during the last decade. Despite of these successes, there are some puzzling conflicts between LCDM predictions and dynamical data probes (bulk flows, alignment and magnitude of low CMB multipoles, alignment of quasar optical polarization vectors, cluster halo profiles). Most of these puzzles are related to the existence of preferred anisotropy axes which appear to be unlikely close to each other. A few models that predict the existence of preferred cosmological axes are briefly discussed.
As a large-scale overdensity collapses, it affects the orientation and shape of galaxies that form, by exerting tidal shear along their axes. Therefore, the shapes of elliptical galaxies align with the tidal field of cosmic structures. This intrinsic alignment provides insights into galaxy formation and the primordial universe, complements late-time cosmological probes and constitutes a significant systematic effect for weak gravitational lensing observations. In the present study, we provide constraints on the linear alignment model using a fully Bayesian field-level approach, using galaxy sh…
It has been shown, both in simulations and observationally, that the tidal field of a large galaxy can torque its satellites such that the major axis of satellite galaxies points towards their hosts. This so-called `shape alignment' has been observed in isolated Milky Way-like galaxies but not in `Local Group'-like pairs. In this study, we investigate the shape alignment of satellite galaxies in galaxy pairs similar to the Local Group identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 13 (SDSS DR13). By stacking tens of thousands of satellite galaxies around primary galaxy pairs, we find …
This paper has been withdrawn. I belatedly found that the alignment I saw in galaxy cluster axes was bogus. It turns out that it is due to a well-known effect called the "Fingers of God" that stretches out the redshifts of galaxies in a cluster due to their motion within the cluster. This would not cause an overall bias if the SDSS survey were complete, but there is no coverage toward right ascensions near 90 degrees or 270 deg. Thus the apparent alignment appears along 0 -- 180 deg.
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Legacy Survey, we study the alignment of luminous galaxies with spectroscopic data with the surrounding larger-scale structure as defined by galaxies with only photometric data. We find that galaxies from the red sequence have a statistically significant tendency for their apparent long axes to align parallel to the projected surrounding structure. Red galaxies more luminous than the median of our sample ($M_r < -21.78$) have a mean alignment angle $\langle Φ\rangle < 45^{\circ}$, indicating preferred parallel alignment, at a significance lev…
Galaxies and clusters embedded in the large-scale structure of the Universe are observed to align in preferential directions. Galaxy alignment has been established as a potential probe for cosmological information, but the application of cluster alignments for these purposes remains unexplored. Clusters are observed to have a higher alignment amplitude than galaxies, but because galaxies are much more numerous, the trade-off in detectability between the two signals remains unclear. We present forecasts comparing cluster and galaxy alignments for two extragalactic survey set-ups: a currently-av…
We measure the alignment of the shapes of galaxy clusters, as traced by their satellite distributions, with the matter density field using the public redMaPPer catalogue based on SDSS-DR8, which contains 26 111 clusters up to z~0.6. The clusters are split into nine redshift and richness samples; in each of them we detect a positive alignment, showing that clusters point towards density peaks. We interpret the measurements within the tidal alignment paradigm, allowing for a richness and redshift dependence. The intrinsic alignment (IA) amplitude at the pivot redshift z=0.3 and pivot richness λ=…
It is known observationally that the major axes of galaxy clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies are roughly aligned with each other. To understand the origin of the alignment, we identify 40 cluster-sized dark matter (DM) haloes with masses higher than $5\times10^{13}~M_{\odot}$ and their central galaxies (CGs) at $z\approx 0$ in the Horizon-AGN cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We trace the progenitors at 50 different epochs between $0<z<5$. We then fit their shapes and orientations with a triaxial ellipsoid model. While the orientations of both DM haloes and CGs change signific…
Galaxies are not randomly distributed across the universe but showing different kinds of alignment on different scales. On small scales satellite galaxies have a tendency to distribute along the major axis of the central galaxy, with dependence on galaxy properties that both red satellites and centrals have stronger alignment than their blue counterparts. On large scales, it is found that the major axes of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) have correlation up to 30Mpc/h. Using hydro-dynamical simulation with star formation, we investigate the origin of galaxy alignment on different scales. It is fo…
We present measurements of two types of cluster galaxy alignments based on a volume limited and highly pure ($\ge$ 90%) sample of clusters from the GMBCG catalog derived from SDSS DR7. We detect a clear BCG alignment (the alignment of major axis of the BCG toward the distribution of cluster satellite galaxies). We find that the BCG alignment signal becomes stronger as the redshift and BCG absolute magnitude decrease, and becomes weaker as BCG stellar mass decreases. No dependence of the BCG alignment on cluster richness is found. We can detect a statistically significant ($\ge$ 3 sigma) satell…

We study the alignments of galaxy spin axes with respect to cosmic web filaments as a function of various properties of the galaxies and their constituent bulges and discs. We exploit the SAMI Galaxy Survey to identify 3D spin axes from spatially-resolved stellar kinematics and to decompose the galaxy into the kinematic bulge and disc components. The GAMA survey is used to reconstruct the cosmic filaments. The mass of the bulge, defined as the product of stellar mass and bulge-to-total flux ratio M_bulge=M_star x (B/T), is the primary parameter of correlation with spin-filament alignments: gal…
The accretion of satellites onto central galaxies along vast cosmic filaments is an apparent outcome of the anisotropic collapse of structure in our Universe. Numerical work (based on gravitational dynamics of N-body simulations) indicates that satellites are beamed towards hosts along preferred directions imprinted by the velocity shear field. Here we use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to observationally test this claim. We construct 3D filaments and sheets and examine the relative position of satellite galaxies. A statistically significant alignment between satellite galaxy position and filame…
We investigate the effect of coupled dark energy (cDE) on the spin alignments in isolated pairs of galactic halos, using the publicly available data from the hydrodynamical cDE simulations (H-CoDECs) which were run for various cDE models such as EXP001, EXP002, EXP003 (with exponential potential and constant coupling), EXP008e3 (with exponential potential and exponential coupling) and SUGRA003 (with supergravity potential and negative constant coupling) as well as for a standard LCDM cosmology (with the WMAP7 parameters). Measuring the cosines of the angles between the spin axes in isolated pa…
It is expected that the European Space Agency mission Gaia will make possible to determine coordinates in the optical domain of more than 500000 quasars. In 2006, a radio astrometry project was launched with the overall goal to make comparison of coordinate systems derived from future space-born astrometry instruments with the coordinate system constructed from analysis of the global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) more robust. Investigation of their rotation, zonal errors, and the non-alignment of the radio and optical positions caused by both radio and optical structures are importa…
We explore how the galaxy stellar spins acquire a peculiar tendency of being aligned with the major principal axes of the local tidal fields, in contrast to their DM counterparts which tend to be perpendicular to them, regardless of their masses. Analyzing the halo and subhalo catalogs from the IllustrisTNG 300 hydrodynamic simulations at $z\le 1$, we determine the cosines of the alignment angles, $\cosα$, between the galaxy stellar and DM spins. Creating four $\cosα$-selected samples of the galaxies and then controlling them to share the same density and mass distributions, we determine the a…
Previous studies have shown the filamentary structures in the cosmic web influence the alignments of nearby galaxies. We study this effect in the LOWZ sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using the "Cosmic Web Reconstruction" filament catalogue. We find that LOWZ galaxies exhibit a small but statistically significant alignment in the direction parallel to the orientation of nearby filaments. This effect is detectable even in the absence of nearby galaxy clusters, which suggests it is an effect from the matter distribution in the filament. A nonparametric regression model suggests that the al…
We present the first measurements of the projected clustering and intrinsic alignments (IA) of galaxies observed by the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS). With photometry in 40 narrow optical passbands ($450\rm{nm}-850\rm{nm}$), the quality of photometric redshift estimation is $σ_{z} \sim 0.01(1 + z)$ for galaxies in the $19\,\rm{deg}^{2}$ Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) W3 field, allowing us to measure the projected 3D clustering and IA for flux-limited, faint galaxies ($i < 22.5$) out to $z\sim0.8$. To measure two-point statistics, we developed, and te…
A number of works reported on the existence of a large scale alignment of the polarization plane of extragalactic sources as well as the alignment of radio-sources structural axes. However, both claims and their interpretation remain controversial. For the first time we explore the parsec-scale jets alignments. Additionally, we use archival polarimetric data at different wavelengths in order to compare relative orientations of the jets and the polarization planes of their emission. Using the flux density distribution in very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio maps from the Astrogeo data…
We report a detection of the effect of the large-scale velocity shear on the spatial distributions of the galactic satellites around the isolated hosts. Identifying the isolated galactic systems each of which consists of a single host galaxy and its satellites from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and reconstructing linearly the velocity shear field in the local universe, we measure the alignments between the relative positions of the satellites from their isolated hosts and the principal axes of the local velocity shear tensors projected on to the plane of sky. We find…
Elliptical galaxies today appear aligned with the large-scale structure of the Universe, but it is still an open question when they acquire this alignment. Observational data is currently insufficient to provide constraints on the time evolution of intrinsic alignments, and hence existing models range from assuming that galaxies gain some primordial alignment at formation, to suggesting that they react instantaneously to tidal interactions with the large-scale structure. Using the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN, we measure the relative alignments between the major axes of g…
