Today's great challenges of energy and informational technologies are addressed with a singular compound, the Li and Na doped few layer graphene. All what is impossible for graphite (homogeneous and high level Na doping), and unstable for single layer graphene, works very well for this structure. The transformation of the Raman G line to a Fano lineshape and the emergence of strong, metallic-like electron spin resonance (ESR) modes, attest the high level of graphene doping in liquid ammonia for both kinds of alkali atoms. The spin-relaxation time in our materials, deduced from the ESR line-width, is 6-8 ns, which is comparable to the longest values found in spin-transport experiments on ultrahigh mobility graphene flakes. This could qualify our material as promising candidate in spintronics devices. On the other hand, the successful sodium doping, this being a highly abundant metal, could be an encouraging alternative to lithium batteries.
Electron spin resonance spectra of copper phthalocyanine doped with alkaline metals (AxCuPc) have been investigated. The temperature dependence of ESR spectra indicates the ferromagnetic behavior. The Curie-Weiss temperature varies from 30K to 115K depending on the stoichiometry x of samples. Some particles of polycrystalline samples were attracted to a weak magnet at temperature slightly higher than 77K. The observed magnetism is caused by unpaired pi-electrons of phthalocyanine anions on the Eg doubly degenerated molecular orbital. The observed ferromagnetism can be understood within the fra…
We investigated the possibility of superconductivity in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) doped using each group-1 (Li, Na, K) and group-2 (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) atom via ab-initio calculations. Consequently, we reveal that Sr- and Ba-doped monolayer h-BN and Ca-doped monolayer h-BN with 3.5% tensile strain are energetically stable and become superconductors with Tc values of 5.83 K, 1.53 K, and 12.8 K, respectively, which are considerably higher than those of Ca-, Sr-, and Ba-doped graphene. In addition, the momentum-resolved electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constant shows that the scatter…
CO$_2$ emissions originating from the construction industry have a significant impact on global warming where the production of ordinary Portland cement clinker is responsible for approximately 8\% of all human-made CO$_2$. Alkali doped calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) is a critical silicate material since the use of blended cements and alkali-activated materials in construction industry can substantially reduce human-made CO$_2$ emissions. However, the effect of alkali doping (Na and K) on the long-term stability and associated durability of C-S-H remains an open question. Here, using first p…
We study the static screening in a Hubbard-like model using quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the random phase approximation is surprisingly accurate almost up to the Mott transition. We argue that in alkali-doped Fullerenes the Coulomb pseudopotential $μ^\ast$ is not very much reduced by retardation effects. Therefore efficient screening is important in reducing $μ^{\ast}$ sufficiently to allow for an electron-phonon driven superconductivity. In this way the Fullerides differ from the conventional picture, where retardation effects play a major role in reducing the electron-electron repulsion…
Six half-metallic ferromagnets X0.75Y0.25C (X=Si, Ge, Sn and Y =Ca and Sr) with zinc-blende structure, resulting from alkaline-earth (Ca, Sr) substitution for X, are predicted based on the density functional theory. The calculated total magnetic moments of these ferromagnets are all integer 2.00μB per supercell, which are one of important characters of half-metallic ferromagnets. Our calculations indicate that X0.75Y0.25C have wide spin gap and potentially have high Curie temperature. Alkaline-earth doping results in the spin-polarization and half-metallicity of these compounds. It is confirme…
The binding energy of A3C60, a conductor, is described well by an ionic solid type calculation. This succeeds because there is little overlap between molecular wave functions on neighbouring sites, so that electrons are practically localized on-shell. This leads one to believe that even in A4C60 and A6C60 systems such calculation may suffice. However, for large charge on the anion, there is a possibility for some electrons to delocalize and go into the s-band. We calculate binding energy, keeping these delocalised electrons x, as a parameter and minimize the energy w.r.t. it. We take the inter…
Alkali-doped fullerides A$_n$C$_{60}$ show a remarkably wide range of electronic phases in function of A= Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and the degree of doping, $n=1-5$. While the presence of strong electron correlations is well established, recent investigations give also evidence for dynamical Jahn-Teller instability in the insulating and the metallic phase of A$_3$C$_{60}$. To reveal the interplay of these interactions in fullerides with even $n$, we address the electronic phase of A$_4$C$_{60}$ with accurate many-body calculations within a realistic electronic model including all basic interactions e…
Alkali doped aromatic compounds have shown evidence of metallic and superconducting phases whose precise nature is still mysterious. In potassium and rubidium doped phenanthrene, superconducting temperatures around 5 K have been detected, but such basic elements as the stoichiometry, crystal structure, and electronic bands are still speculative. We seek to predict the crystal structure of M3-phenanthrene (M = K, Rb) using ab-initio evolutionary simulation in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT), and find metal but also insulator phases with distinct structures. The original P21 her…
A new class of Erbium doped glasses with compositions xNa2O - (60-x)PbCl2 - 40P2O5 (x=0, 10, 20 and 30) were fabricated and characterized for optical properties. Absorption spectra were analyzed for important Judd-Ofelt parameters from the integrated intensities of various Er3+ glass absorption bands. Photoluminescence (PL) and its decay behavior studies were carried out for the transition 4I13/2 -> 4I15/2. A systematic correlation between the Judd-Ofelt parameter {omega}2 and the covalent nature of the glass matrix was observed, due to increased role of bridging oxygens in the glass network. …

Fullerides are crystals made from C60 molecules. When doped with alkali metals the valence electrons of the alkali atoms are transfered to the C60 molecules. We show how to set up a model Hamiltonian to describe the correlated hopping of these electrons between C60 molecules. Then we discuss Monte Carlo methods for such lattice Hamiltonians, putting special emphasis on the optimization of Gutzwiller wavefunctions both in variational and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo. As application of these methods we analyze the metal-insulator transition in the integer-doped Fullerides.
Polarized Raman scattering spectra of superconducting K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ and nonsuperconducting K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.8}$Co$_{0.2}$Se$_2$ single crystals were measured in a temperature range from 10 K up to 300 K. Two Raman active modes from the $I4/mmm$ phase and seven from the $I4/m$ phase are observed in frequency range from 150 to 325 cm$^{-1}$ in both compounds, suggesting that K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.8}$Co$_{0.2}$Se$_2$ single crystal also has two-phase nature. Temperature dependence of Raman mode energy is analyzed in terms of lattice thermal expansion and phonon-phonon interaction. Temperature de…
We report a high-throughput ab-initio study of the thermodynamic and superconducting proper- ties of the recently synthesized XB$_3$C$_3$ clathrates. These compounds, in which boron and carbon form a sponge-like network of interconnected cages each enclosing a central X atom, are attractive candidates to achieve high-Tc conventional superconductivity at ambient pressure, due to the simultaneous presence of a stiff B-C covalent network and a tunable charge reservoir, provided by the guest atom. Ternary compounds like CaB$_3$C$_3$, SrB$_3$C$_3$ and BaB$_3$C$_3$ are predicted to exhibit T$_c$ $\l…
Theoretical studies on the geometry, electronic structure and spin multiplicity of Sc, Ti and V doped Na$_n$ (n = 4, 5, 6) clusters have been carried out within a gradient corrected density functional approach. Two complementary approaches including all-electron calculations on free clusters, and supercell calculations using planewave pseudopotential and projector augmented wave formalisms have been carried out. It is shown that spin magnetic moments of the transition metal atoms, the magnitude of host polarization, and the sign of the host polarization all change with the number of alkali ato…
The electronic properties of aluminum-doped graphenes enriched by multi-orbital hybridizations are investigated using first-principles calculations. The feature-rich electronic structures exhibit the quasi-rigid red shifts of the carbon-created energy bands, the Al-dominated valence and conduction bands, and many free electrons in the conduction Dirac cone. These are directly reflected in the special structures of density of states (DOS). The Al- and alkali-induced high free carrier densities are almost the same. There exist certain important differences among the Al-, alkali- and halogen-dope…
Boron-doped graphene was reported to be the best non-metal doped graphene electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) working at an onset potential of 0.035 V [JACS 136 (2014) 4394]. In the present DFT study, intermediates and transition structures along the possible reaction pathways are determined. Both Langmuir-Hinschelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms are discussed. Molecular oxygen binds the positively charged B atom and forms an open shell end-on dioxygen intermediate. The associative path is favoured with respect to the dissociative one. The free energy diagrams along the four…
The interband pi and pi+sigma plasmons in pristine graphene and the Dirac plasmon in doped graphene are not applicable, since they are broad or weak, and weakly couple to an external longitudinal or electromagnetic probe. Therefore, the ab initio Density Function Theory is used to demonstrate that the chemical doping of the graphene by the alkali or alkaline earth atoms dramatically changes the poor graphene excitation spectrum in the ultra-violet frequency range (4 - 10 eV). Four prominent modes are detected. Two of them are the intra-layer plasmons with the square-root dispersion, characteri…
The diversified essential properties of the stage-n graphite alkali-intercalation compounds are thoroughly explored by the first-principles calculations. According to their main features, the lithium and non-lithium materials might be quite different from each other in stacking configurations, the intercalated alkali-atom concentrations, the free conduction electron densities, and the atom-dominated & (carbon, alkali)-co-dominated energy bands. The close relations between the alkali-doped metallic behaviors and the geometric symmetries will be clarified through the interlayer atomic interactio…
Through direct nanoparticle nucleation and growth on nitrogen doped, reduced graphene oxide sheets and cation substitution of spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles, a manganese-cobalt spinel MnCo2O4/graphene hybrid was developed as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline conditions. Electrochemical and X-ray near edge structure (XANES) investigations revealed that the nucleation and growth method for forming inorganic-nanocarbon hybrid results in covalent coupling between spinel oxide nanoparticles and N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rmGO) sheets. Carbon K-edg…
Rattling dynamics have been identified as fundamental to superconductivity in defect pyrochlore osmates and aluminium vanadium intermetallics, as well as low thermal conductivity in clathrates and filled skutterudites. Combining inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we use a new approach to investigate rattling in the Al-doped defect pyrochlore tungstates: AAl0.33W1.67O6 (A = K, Rb, Cs). We find that although all the alkali metals rattle, the rattling of the K atoms is unique, involving local diffusion within a cage as well as vibrat…
Understanding new superconductors requires high-quality epitaxial thin films to explore intrinsic electromagnetic properties, control grain boundaries and strain effects, and evaluate device applications. So far superconducting properties of ferropnictide thin films appear compromised by imperfect epitaxial growth and poor connectivity of the superconducting phase. Here we report novel template engineering using single-crystal intermediate layers of (001) SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 grown on various perovskite substrates that enables genuine epitaxial films of Co-doped BaFe2As2 with high transition temp…
Recent theoretical considerations have demonstrated that freestanding graphene doped with alkali metals (AC x ) supports strong Dirac and weak acoustic plasmons. Here we show that when AC x is deposited on a metallic surface, the intense Coulomb screening completely washes out these collective modes. However, even small increase of separation between AC x and metallic surface causes recovery of AC x plasmonic properties and especially the enhancement of acoustic plasmons intensities not present in the freestanding case. We further provide the physical background of these intriguing phenomena. …
The formation of atomic nanoclusters on suspended graphene sheets have been investigated by employing a Molecular dynamics simulation at finite temperature. Our systematic study is based on temperature dependent Molecular dynamics simulations of some transition and alkali atoms on suspended graphene sheets. We find that the transition atoms aggregate and make various size nanoclusters distributed randomly on graphene surface. We also report that most alkali atoms make one atomic layer on graphene sheets. Interestingly, the potassium atoms almost deposit regularly on the surface at low temperat…
Chemically doped graphene could support plasmon excitations up to telecommunication or even visible frequencies. Apart from that, the presence of dopant may influence electron scattering mechanisms in graphene and thus impact the plasmon decay rate. Here I study from first principles these effects in single-layer and bilayer graphene doped with various alkali and alkaline earth metals. I find new dopant-activated damping channels: loss due to out-of-plane graphene and in-plane dopant vibrations, and electron transitions between graphene and dopant states. The latter excitations interact with t…
Layered chalcogenide materials have a wealth of nanoelectronics applications like resistive switching and energy-harvesting such as photocatalyst owing to rich electronic, orbital, and lattice excitations. In this work, we explore monochalcogenide germanium selenide GeSe with respect to substitutional doping with 13 metallic cations by using first-principles calculations. Typical dopants including s-shell (alkali elements Li and Na), p-shell (Al, Pb and Bi), 3d (Fe, Cu, Co and Ni), 4d (Pd and Ag) and 5d (Au and Pt) elements are systematically examined. Amongst all the cationic dopants, Al with…
To establish the doping-dependent phase diagram in alkali-metal doped C$_{60}$, we synthesize Rb-doped C$_{60}$ samples with different stoichiometries by using the improved wet-chemistry technique. The doping levels determined from the Raman scattering spectra often show the appearance of three electrons corresponding to the band filling of three for the synthesized compounds no matter matter what dopants are used. The multiple phase coexistence with the unique Rb$_{3}$C$_{60}$ is identified from the refined x-ray diffraction patterns. The phase fraction of Rb$_{3}$C$_{60}$ is found to behave …
We have performed a comparative study of the electronic properties of six different electron-doped metal phthalocyanine (MPc) compounds (ZnPc, CuPc, NiPc, CoPc, FePc, and MnPc), in which the electron density is controlled by means of potassium intercalation. In spite of the complexity of these systems, we find that the nature of the underlying molecular orbitals produce observable effects in the doping dependence of the electrical conductivity of the materials. For all the MPc's in which the added electrons are expected to occupy orbitals centered on the ligands (ZnPc, CuPc, and NiPc), the dop…
Tunneled metal oxides such as $α-$Mn$_8$O$_{16}$ (hollandite) have proven to be compelling candidates for charge-storage materials in high-density batteries. In particular, the tunnels can support one-dimensional chains of K$^+$ ions (which act as structure-stabilizing dopants) and H$_2$O molecules, as these chains are favored by strong H-bonds and electrostatic interactions. In this work, we examine the role of water molecules in enhancing the stability of K$^+$-doped $α-$Mn$_8$O$_{16}$ (cryptomelane). The combined experimental and theoretical analyses show that for high enough concentrations…
Research on black phosphorus (BP) has been experiencing a renaissance over the last few years, after the demonstration that few-layer BP exhibits high carrier mobility and a thickness-dependent band gap. For a long time, bulk BP is also known to be a superconductor under high pressure exceeding 10 GPa. The superconductivity is due to a structural transformation into another allotrope of phosphorous and accompanied by a semiconductor-metal transition. No superconductivity could be achieved for BP itself (that is, in its normal orthorhombic form) despite several attempts reported in the literatu…
We study the plasmonic properties of coupled noble-metal nanochains in the case of different number of coupled chains and doping by different transition-metal (TM) atoms within the time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) approach. We find that as the number of chains in the array increases the plasmon peak shifts from the sub-eV towards the visible range. As doping with TM atoms increases, the visible absorption band broadens, owing to formation of additional plasmon peaks. The optical response is very sensitive to the type of doped atoms, their number and position; in particular, the…
We study the spectral function and quasiparticle scattering in Li-decorated graphene (Li@graphene) with an atomistic $T$-matrix formalism and uncover adatom-induced spectral effects which shed light on experimentally observed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) features. From transport studies, alkali adatoms are known to introduce charged-impurity scattering limiting the carrier mobility. Here, we demonstrate that Li adatoms furthermore give rise to a low-energy impurity band centered at the $Γ$ point which originates from the hybridization between the atomic 2s state of the Li …
Narrow gap semiconductor Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se was investigated for topologically protected surface states in its rock-salt structural phase for x=0.45, 0.23, 0.15, and 0. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of intrinsically p-doped samples showed clear indication of two Dirac cones, eccentric about the time-reversal invariant point X of the surface Brillouin zone for all but the x=0 sample. Adsorption of alkalies gradually filled the surface bands with electrons, driving the x>0 topological crystalline insulator systems through Lifshitz transitions, and from a hole- to electron-like Ferm…
All-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) show potential in optoelectronic devices, though their stability and efficiency have yet to improve. In this work, we explore the effect of bivalent metal site doping on the optoelectronic properties of CsPbX$_3$ (X = Br, Cl) perovskite NCs. First, the Pb$^{2+}$ ions in pristine CsPbBr$_3$ NC are partially substituted by Mn$^{2+}$ ions, and the alkaline earth metal strontium is then doped on both pristine and Mn$^{2+}$-substituted particles. The structural and photophysical properties of the pristine and the three doped NC variants have b…
Tuning band gaps in two-dimensional (2D) materials is of great interest in the fundamental and practical aspects of contemporary material sciences. Recently, black phosphorus (BP) consisting of stacked layers of phosphorene was experimentally observed to show a widely tunable band gap by means of the deposition of potassium (K) atoms on the surface, thereby allowing great flexibility in design and optimization of electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, based on the density-functional theory calculations, we demonstrates that the donated electrons from K dopants are mostly localized at the…
The high-frequency Raman-active phonon modes of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are thought to be characterized by Kohn anomalies (KAs), which are expected to be modified by the doping-induced tuning of the Fermi energy level $ε_F$, obtained through the intercalation of SWNTs with alkali atoms or by the application of a gate potential. We present a Density-Functional Theory (DFT) study of the phonon properties of a (9,9) metallic SWNT as a function of electronic doping. For such study, we use, as in standard DFT calculations of vibrational properties, the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) …
