Based on recent results from three-dimensional supernova simulations and semi-analytical parametrised models, we develop analytical prescriptions for the dependence of the mass of neutron stars and black holes and the natal kicks, if any, on the pre-supernova carbon-oxygen core and helium shell masses. Our recipes are probabilistic rather than deterministic in order to account for the intrinsic stochasticity of stellar evolution and supernovae. We anticipate that these recipes will be particularly useful for rapid population synthesis, and we illustrate their application to distributions of remnant masses and kicks for a population of single stars.
We study galactic enrichment with rapid neutron capture (r-process) elements in cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy. We include a variety of enrichment models, based on either neutron star mergers or a rare class of core-collapse supernova as sole r-process sources. For the first time in cosmological simulations, we implement neutron star natal kicks on-the-fly to study their impact. With kicks, neutron star mergers are more likely to occur outside the galaxy disc, but how far the binaries travel before merging also depends on the kick velocity distributi…
Supernova explosion and the associated neutron star natal kicks are important events on a pathway of a binary to become a gravitational wave source, an X-ray binary or a millisecond radio pulsar. Weak natal kicks often lead to binary survival, while strong kicks frequently disrupt the binary. In this article, we aim to further constrain neutron star natal kicks in binaries. We explore binary population synthesis models by varying prescription for natal kick, remnant mass and mass accretion efficiency. We introduce a robust statistical technique to analyse combined observations of different nat…
We measure the angle between the neutron star (NS) natal kick direction and the inferred direction of jets according to the morphology of 12 core collapse supernova remnants (SNR), and find that the distribution is almost random, but missing small angles. The 12 SNRs are those for which we could both identify morphological features that we can attribute to jets and for which the direction of the NS natal kick is given in the literature. Unlike some claims for spin-kick alignment, here we rule out jet-kick alignment. We discuss the cumulative distribution function of the jet-kick angles under t…
Theoretical and observational studies suggest that stellar binaries exist in large numbers in galactic nuclei like our own Galactic Center. Neutron stars (NSs), and debatedly, black holes (BHs) and white dwarfs (WDs), receive natal kicks at birth. In this work we study the effect of two successive natal kicks on a population of stellar binaries orbiting the massive black hole (MBH) in our Galactic Center. These natal kicks can significantly alter the binary orbit in a variety of ways, and also the orbit of the binary around the MBH. We found a variety of dynamical outcomes resulting from these…
The masses of stellar-remnant black holes (BH), as a result of their formation via massive single- and binary-stellar evolution, is of high interest in this era of gravitational-wave detection from binary black hole (BBH) and binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. Here we present new developments in the N-body evolution program NBODY7 in regards to its stellar-remnant formation and related schemes. We demonstrate that the newly-implemented stellar-wind and remnant-formation schemes in the NBODY7 code's BSE sector, such as the 'rapid' and the 'delayed' supernova (SN) schemes along with an implement…
We compare binary evolution models with different assumptions about black-hole natal kicks to the first gravitational-wave observations performed by the LIGO detectors. Our comparisons attempt to reconcile merger rate, masses, spins, and spin-orbit misalignments of all current observations with state-of-the-art formation scenarios of binary black holes formed in isolation. We estimate that black holes (BHs) should receive natal kicks at birth of the order of $σ\simeq 200$ (50) km/s if tidal processes do (not) realign stellar spins. Our estimate is driven by two simple factors. The natal kick d…
The long wait for the detection of merging black hole -- neutron star (BH--NS) binaries is finally over with the announcement by the LIGO/Virgo/Kagra collaboration of GW200105 and GW200115. Remarkably, the primary of GW200115 has a negative spin projection onto the orbital angular momentum, with about $90\%$ probability. Merging BH--NS binaries are expected to form mainly through the evolution of massive binary stars in the field, since their dynamical formation in dense star clusters is strongly suppressed by mass segregation. In this paper, we carry out a systematic statistical study of the …
Current prescriptions for supernova natal kicks in rapid binary population synthesis simulations are based on fits of simple functions to single pulsar velocity data. We explore a new parameterization of natal kicks received by neutron stars in isolated and binary systems developed by Mandel & Müller, which is based on 1D and 3D supernova simulations and accounts for the physical correlations between progenitor properties, remnant mass, and the kick velocity. We constrain two free parameters in this model using very long baseline interferometry velocity measurements of Galactic single pulsars.…
Six gravitational wave events have been reported by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration (LVC), five of them associated with black hole binary (BHB) mergers and one with a double neutron star (DNS) merger, while the coalescence of a black hole-neutron star (BHNS) binary is still missing. We investigate the progenitors of double compact object binaries with our population-synthesis code MOBSE. MOBSE includes advanced prescriptions for mass loss by stellar winds (depending on metallicity and on the Eddington ratio) and a formalism for core-collapse, electron-capture and (pulsational) pair instability su…
Multiple pieces of evidence suggest that neutron stars receive large kicks when formed from the remnant of a collapsing star. However, the evidence for whether black holes (BH) receive natal kicks is less clear, reliant on weak constraints from the analysis of BH X-ray binaries and massive runaway and walkaway stars. Here we show for the first time that recent microlensing detections offer a new method for measuring the kicks BHs receive at birth. When a BH is identified through both photometric and astrometric microlensing and when the lensed star has a known distance and proper motion, the m…
Some fraction of compact binaries that merge within a Hubble time may have formed from two massive stars in isolation. For this isolated-binary formation channel, binaries need to survive two supernova (SN) explosions in addition to surviving common-envelope evolution. For the SN explosions, both the mass loss and natal kicks change the orbital characteristics, producing either a bound or unbound binary. We show that gravitational waves (GWs) may be produced not only from the core-collapse SN process, but also from the SN mass loss and SN natal kick during the pre-SN to post-SN binary transiti…

Binary neutron star mergers (BNSMs) is currently the most promising source of \textsl{r}-process thanks to the detection of GW170817. The estimated occurring frequency and the amount of mass ejected per merger indicate that BNSMs by itself can account for all the \textsl{r}-process enrichment in the Galaxy. However, the decreasing trend of [Eu/Fe] vs [Fe/H] of disk stars for [Fe/H]$\gtrsim -1$ in the solar neighborhood is inconsistent with the flat trend expected from BNSMs with a standard delay time distribution (DTD) $\propto t^{-1}$. This has led to the suggestion that either additional sou…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) could arise from mergers of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (WDs) triggered by Lidov-Kozai (LK) oscillations in hierarchical triple-star systems. However, predicted merger rates are several orders of magnitude lower than the observed SNe Ia rate. The low predicted rates can be attributed in part to the fact that many potential WD-merger progenitor systems, with high mutual orbital inclination, merge or interact before the WD stage. Recently, evidence was found for the existence of natal kicks imparted on WDs with a typical magnitude of 0.75 km/s. In triples, kicks change…
In recent years, a handful of ``dark" binaries have been discovered with a non-luminous compact object. Astrometry and radial velocity measurements of the bright companion allow us to measure the post-supernova orbital elements of such a binary. In this paper, we develop a statistical formalism to use such measurements to infer the pre-supernova orbital elements, and the natal kick imparted by the supernova (SN). We apply this formalism to the recent discovery of an X-ray quiet binary with a black hole, VFTS 243, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Assuming an isotropic, Maxwellian distribution on …
The origin of ultra-wide massive binaries (orbital separations $10^3-2\times 10^5$~AU) and their properties are not well characterized nor understood. Here we use the second Gaia data release to search for wide astrometric companions to Galactic O-B5 stars which share similar parallax and proper motion with the primaries. Using the data we characterize the frequency and properties of such binaries. We find an ultra-wide multiplicity fraction of $4.4\pm0.5$ per cent, to our completeness limit (up to $\approx 17$~mag; down to G-stars at distances of 0.3-2~kpc, excluding stars in clusters). The s…
Natal kicks are matter of debate and significantly affect the merger rate density of compact objects. Here, we present a new simple formalism for natal kicks of neutron stars (NSs) and black holes (BHs). We describe the magnitude of the kick as $v_{\rm kick}\propto{}f_{\rm H05}\,{}\,{}m_{\rm ej}\,{}\,{}m_{\rm rem}^{-1}$, where $f_{\rm H05}$ is a normalization factor, drawn from a Maxwellian distribution with one-dimensional root-mean-square velocity $σ=265$~km~s$^{-1}$, $m_{\rm ej}$ is the mass of the supernova (SN) ejecta and $m_{\rm rem}$ is the mass of the compact object. This formalism mat…
Observations of binary pulsars and pulsars in globular clusters suggest that at least some pulsars must receive weak natal kicks at birth. If all pulsars received strong natal kicks above \unit[50]{\kms}, those born in globular clusters would predominantly escape, while wide binaries would be disrupted. On the other hand, observations of transverse velocities of isolated radio pulsars indicate that only $5\pm2\%$ have velocities below \unit[50]{\kms}. We explore this apparent tension with rapid binary population synthesis modelling. We propose a model in which supernovae with characteristicall…
Understanding the natal kicks received by neutron stars (NSs) during formation is a critical component of modelling the evolution of massive binaries. Natal kicks are an integral input parameter for population synthesis codes, and have implications for the formation of double NS systems and their subsequent merger rates. However, many of the standard observational kick distributions that are used are obtained from samples created only from isolated NSs. Kick distributions derived in this way overestimate the intrinsic NS kick distribution. For NSs in binaries, we can only directly estimate the…
Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's newly-released GWTC-2 catalog of gravitational-wave detections offers unprecedented information about the spin magnitudes and orientations of merging binary black holes (BBHs). Notably, analysis of the BBH population suggests the presence of binaries whose component spins are significantly misaligned with respect to their orbital angular momenta. Significantly misaligned spins are typically predicted to be at odds with isolated field formation via standard common envelope (CE) evolution, and hence a "smoking gun" signature of dynamical binary formation inside…
Natal kicks are one of the most debated issues about double neutron star (DNS) formation. Several observational and theoretical results suggest that some DNSs have formed with low natal kicks ($\lesssim{}50$ km s$^{-1}$), which might be attributed to electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe). We investigate the impact of ECSNe on the formation of DNSs by means of population synthesis simulations. In particular, we assume a Maxwellian velocity distribution for the natal kick induced by ECSNe with one dimensional root-mean-square $σ_{\rm ECSN} = 0,7,15,26,265$ km s$^{-1}$. The total number of DNSs sca…
Most massive stars, if not all, are in binary configuration or higher multiples. These massive stars undergo supernova explosions and end their lives as either black holes or neutron stars. Recent observations have suggested that neutron stars and perhaps even black holes receive large velocity kicks at birth. Such natal kicks and the sudden mass loss can significantly alter the orbital configuration of the system. Here we derive general analytical expressions that describe the effects of natal kicks in binaries on hierarchical triple systems. We explore several proof-of-concept applications s…
We use Very Long Baseline Interferometry to measure the proper motions of three black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs). Using these results together with data from the literature and Gaia-DR2 to collate the best available constraints on proper motion, parallax, distance and systemic radial velocity of 16 BHXBs, we determined their three dimensional Galactocentric orbits. We extended this analysis to estimate the probability distribution for the potential kick velocity (PKV) a BHXB system could have received on formation. Constraining the kicks imparted to BHXBs provides insight into the birth mecha…
Theoretical population number studies of binaries with at least one black hole (BH) component are obviously depending on whether or not BHs receive a (natal) kick during their formation. Several observational facts seem to indicate that indeed BHs receive a kick during their formation. In the present paper we discuss additional evidence. The progenitors of wind fed high mass X-ray binaries (HMXB) with a BH component (BH HMXB) are WR+OB binaries where the Wolf-Rayet (WR) star will finally collapse and form the BH. Starting from the observed population of WR+OB binaries in the Solar Neighborhood…

Understanding Compact Object Formation and Natal Kicks. III. The case of Cygnus X-1
In this work we focus on a group of Galactic double neutron star (DNS) systems with long orbital periods of $ \gtrsim 1$ day and low eccentricities of $\lesssim 0.4$. The feature of these orbital parameters is used to constrain the evolutionary processes of progenitor binaries and the supernova (SN) kicks of the second born NSs. Adopting that the mass transfer during primordial binary evolution is highly non-conservative (rotation-dependent), the formation of DNS systems involves a double helium star binary phase, the common envelope (CE) evolution initiates before the first NS formation. Duri…
All neutron star progenitors in neutron-star High-Mass X-ray Binaries (NS HMXBs) undergo a supernova event that may lead to a significant natal kick impacting the motion of the whole binary system. The space observatory Gaia performs a deep optical survey with exquisite astrometric accuracy, for both position and proper motions, that can be used to study natal kicks in NS HMXBs. We aim to survey the observed Galactic NS HMXB population and to quantify the magnitude of the kick imparted onto their NSs, and to highlight any possible differences arising in between the various HMXB types. We perfo…
