We present several first-order and second-order numerical schemes for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with discrete unconditional energy stability. These schemes stem from the generalized Positive Auxiliary Variable (gPAV) idea, and require only the solution of linear algebraic systems with a constant coefficient matrix. More importantly, the computational complexity (operation count per time step) of these schemes is approximately a half of those of the gPAV and the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) methods in previous works. We investigate the stability properties of the proposed schemes to establish stability bounds for the field function and the auxiliary variable, and also provide their error analyses. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical analyses and also demonstrate the stability of the schemes at large time step sizes.
We propose two unconditionally stable, linear ensemble algorithms with pre-computable shared coefficient matrices across different realizations for the magnetohydrodynamics equations. The viscous terms are treated by a standard perturbative discretization. The nonlinear terms are discretized fully explicitly within the framework of the generalized positive auxiliary variable approach (GPAV). Artificial viscosity stabilization that modifies the kinetic energy is introduced to improve accuracy of the GPAV ensemble methods. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and robustnes…
In this paper, we introduce novel discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the Cahn-Hilliard equation, which arises in many applications. The method is designed by integrating the mixed DG method for the spatial discretization with the \emph{Invariant Energy Quadratization} (IEQ) approach for the time discretization. Coupled with a spatial projection, the resulting IEQ-DG schemes are shown to be unconditionally energy dissipative, and can be efficiently solved without resorting to any iteration method. Both one and two dimensional numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical result…
An adaptive implicit-explicit (IMEX) BDF2 scheme is investigated on generalized SAV approach for the Cahn-Hilliard equation by combining with Fourier spectral method in space. It is proved that the modified energy dissipation law is unconditionally preserved at discrete levels. Under a mild ratio restriction, i.e., \Ass{1}: $0<r_k:=τ_k/τ_{k-1}< r_{\max}\approx 4.8645$, we establish a rigorous error estimate in $H^1$-norm and achieve optimal second-order accuracy in time. The proof involves the tools of discrete orthogonal convolution (DOC) kernels and inequality zoom. It is worth noting that t…

Efficient schemes with unconditionally energy stability for the anisotropic Cahn-Hilliard Equation using the stabilized-Scalar Augmented Variable (S-SAV) approach
We report on simulations of two-phase flows with deforming interfaces at various density contrasts by solving thermodynamically consistent Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes equations. An (essentially) unconditionally energy-stable Crank-Nicolson-type time integration scheme is used. Detailed proofs of energy stability of the semi-discrete scheme and for the existence of solutions of the advective-diffusive Cahn-Hilliard operator are provided. In space we discretize with a conforming continuous Galerkin finite element method in conjunction with a residual-based variational multi-scale (VMS) approach …
The mixed form of the Cahn-Hilliard equations is discretized by the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method. For any chemical energy density, existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is obtained. The scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. Convergence of the method is obtained by deriving a priori error estimates that are valid for the Ginzburg-Lindau chemical energy density and for convex domains. The paper also contains discrete functional tools, namely discrete Agmon and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, which are proved to be valid in the hybridizable discontinuous Gale…
We construct first- and second-order time discretization schemes for the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system based on the multiple scalar auxiliary variables approach (MSAV) approach for gradient systems and (rotational) pressure-correction for Navier-Stokes equations. These schemes are linear, fully decoupled, unconditionally energy stable, and only require solving a sequence of elliptic equations with constant coefficients at each time step. We carry out a rigorous error analysis for the first-order scheme, establishing optimal convergence rate for all relevant functions in different norms. W…
This paper establishes a structure-preserving numerical scheme for the Cahn--Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility. First, by applying a finite volume method with upwind numerical fluxes to the degenerate Cahn--Hilliard equation rewritten by the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach, we creatively obtain an unconditionally bound-preserving, energy-stable and fully-discrete scheme, which, for the first time, addresses the boundedness of the classical SAV approach under $H^{-1}$-gradient flow. Then, a dimensional-splitting technique is introduced in high-dimensional cases, which greatly …
In this paper we analyze a fully discrete scheme for a general Cahn-Hilliard equation coupled with a nonsteady Magneto-hydrodynamics flow, which describes two immiscible, incompressible and electrically conducting fluids with different mobilities, fluid viscosities and magnetic diffusivities. A typical fully discrete scheme, which is comprised of conforming finite element method and the Euler semi-implicit discretization based on a convex splitting of the energy of the equation is considered in detail. We prove that our scheme is unconditionally energy stability and obtain some optimal error e…
In this paper, a non-uniform time-stepping convex-splitting numerical algorithm for solving the widely used time-fractional Cahn-Hilliard equation is introduced. The proposed numerical scheme employs the $L1^+$ formula for discretizing the time-fractional derivative and a second-order convex-splitting technique to deal with the non-linear term semi-implicitly. Then the pseudospectral method is utilized for spatial discretization. As a result, the fully discrete scheme has several advantages: second-order accurate in time, spectrally accurate in space, uniquely solvable, mass preserving, and un…
The Cahn--Hilliard equation is a widely used model that describes amongst others phase separation processes of binary mixtures or two-phase flows. In the recent years, different types of boundary conditions for the Cahn--Hilliard equation were proposed and analyzed. In this publication, we are concerned with the numerical treatment of a recent model which introduces an additional Cahn--Hilliard type equation on the boundary as closure for the Cahn--Hilliard equation in the domain [C. Liu, H. Wu, Arch. Ration. Mech. An., 2019]. By identifying a mapping between the phase-field parameter and the …
A Uniquely Solvable, Positivity-Preserving and Unconditionally Energy Stable Numerical Scheme for the Functionalized Cahn-Hilliard Equation with Logarithmic Potential
In this paper, we study numerical methods for solving the coupled Allen-Cahn/Cahn-Hilliard system associated with a free energy functional of logarithmic type. To tackle the challenge posed by the special free energy functional, we propose a method to approximate the discrete variational derivatives in polynomial forms, such that the corresponding finite difference scheme is unconditionally energy stable and the energy dissipation law is maintained. To further improve the performance of the algorithm, a modified adaptive time stepping strategy is adopted such that the time step size can be fle…
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a diffuse interface model of the two-phase incompressible inductionless magnetohydrodynamics problem. This model consists of Cahn-Hilliard equations, Navier-Stokes equations and Poisson equation. We propose a linear and decoupled finite element method to solve this highly nonlinear and multi-physics system. For the time variable, the discretization is a combination of first-order Euler semi-implicit scheme, several first-order stabilization terms and implicit-explicit treatments for coupling terms. For the space variables, we adopt the…
In this paper, we construct and analyze a uniquely solvable, positivity preserving and unconditionally energy stable finite-difference scheme for the periodic three-component Macromolecular Microsphere Composite (MMC) hydrogels system, a ternary Cahn-Hilliard system with a Flory-Huggins-deGennes free energy potential. The proposed scheme is based on a convex-concave decomposition of the given energy functional with two variables, and the centered difference method is adopted in space. We provide a theoretical justification that this numerical scheme has a pair of unique solutions, such that th…
This paper studies a class of linear unconditionally energy stable schemes for the gradient flows. Such schemes are built on the SAV technique and the general linear time discretization (GLTD) as well as the linearization based on the extrapolation for the nonlinear term, and may be arbitrarily high-order accurate and very general, containing many existing SAV schemes and new SAV schemes. It is shown that the semi-discrete-in-time schemes are unconditionally energy stable when the GLTD is algebraically stable, and are convergent with the order of $\min\{\hat{q},ν\}$ under the diagonal stabilit…
The Cahn-Hilliard equation is one of the most common models to describe phase separation processes in mixtures of two materials. For a better description of short-range interactions between the material and the boundary, various dynamic boundary conditions for this equation have been proposed. Recently, a family of models using Cahn-Hilliard-type equations on the boundary of the domain to describe adsorption processes was analysed (cf. Knopf, Lam, Liu, Metzger, ESAIM: Math. Model. Numer. Anal., 2021). This family of models includes the case of instantaneous adsorption processes studied by Gold…
The Cahn--Hilliard equation is one of the most common models to describe phase separation processes of a mixture of two materials. For a better description of short-range interactions between the material and the boundary, various dynamic boundary conditions for the Cahn--Hilliard equation have been proposed and investigated in recent times. Of particular interests are the model by Goldstein, Miranville and Schimperna (Physica D, 2011) and the model by Liu and Wu (Arch.~Ration.~Mech.~Anal., 2019). Both of these models satisfy similar physical properties but differ greatly in their mass conserv…
This paper continues to study linear and unconditionally modified-energy stable (abbreviated as SAV-GL) schemes for the gradient flows. The schemes are built on the SAV technique and the general linear time discretizations (GLTD) as well as the extrapolation for the nonlinear term. Different from [44], the GLTDs with three parameters discussed here are not necessarily algebraically stable. Some algebraic identities are derived by using the method of undetermined coefficients and further used to establish the modified-energy inequalities for the unconditional modified-energy stability of the se…

We propose a new Cahn-Hilliard phase field model coupled to incompressible viscoelasticity at large strains, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model and formulated in the Eulerian configuration. A new kind of diffusive regularization, of Allen-Cahn type, is introduced in the transport equation for the deformation gradient, together with a regularizing interface term depending on the gradient of the deformation gradient in the free energy of the system. We study the global existence of a weak solution for the model. While standard diffusive regularizations of the transport equation for …
