We give a simplified proof for the equivalence of loop-erased random walks to a lattice model containing two complex fermions, and one complex boson. This equivalence works on an arbitrary directed graph. Specifying to the $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice, at large scales this theory reduces to a scalar $ϕ^4$-type theory with two complex fermions, and one complex boson. While the path integral for the fermions is the Berezin integral, for the bosonic field we can either use a complex field $ϕ(x)\in \mathbb C$ (standard formulation) or a nilpotent one satisfying $ϕ(x)^2 =0$. We discuss basic properties of the latter formulation, which has distinct advantages in the lattice model.
We have studied the probability distribution of the perimeter and the area of the k-th largest erased-loop in loop-erased random walks in two-dimensions for k = 1 to 3. For a random walk of N steps, for large N, the average value of the k-th largest perimeter and area scales as N^{5/8} and N respectively. The behavior of the scaled distribution functions is determined for very large and very small arguments. We have used exact enumeration for N <= 20 to determine the probability that no loop of size greater than l (ell) is erased. We show that correlations between loops have to be taken into a…
We study the distribution of sizes of erased loops for loop-erased random walks on regular and fractal lattices. We show that for arbitrary graphs the probability $P(l)$ of generating a loop of perimeter $l$ is expressible in terms of the probability $P_{st}(l)$ of forming a loop of perimeter $l$ when a bond is added to a random spanning tree on the same graph by the simple relation $P(l)=P_{st}(l)/l$. On $d$-dimensional hypercubical lattices, $P(l)$ varies as $l^{-σ}$ for large $l$, where $σ=1+2/z$ for $1<d<4$, where z is the fractal dimension of the loop-erased walks on the graph. On recursi…
We measure the fractal dimension of loop-erased random walk (LERW) in 3 dimensions, and estimate that it is 1.62400 +- 0.00005. LERW is closely related to the uniform spanning tree and the abelian sandpile model. We simulated LERW on both the cubic and face-centered cubic lattices; the corrections to scaling are slightly smaller for the face-centered cubic lattice.
We simulate loop-erased random walks on simple (hyper-)cubic lattices of dimensions 2,3, and 4. These simulations were mainly motivated to test recent two loop renormalization group predictions for logarithmic corrections in $d=4$, simulations in lower dimensions were done for completeness and in order to test the algorithm. In $d=2$, we verify with high precision the prediction $D=5/4$, where the number of steps $n$ after erasure scales with the number $N$ of steps before erasure as $n\sim N^{D/2}$. In $d=3$ we again find a power law, but with an exponent different from the one found in the m…
We study loop erased random walk (LERW) on the percolation cluster, with occupation probability $p\geq p_c$, in two and three dimensions. We find that the fractal dimensions of LERW$_p$ is close to normal LERW in Euclidean lattice, for all $p>p_c$. However our results reveal that LERW on critical incipient percolation clusters is fractal with $d_{f}=1.217\pm0.0015$ for d = 2 and $1.44\pm0.03$ for d = 3, independent of the coordination number of the lattice. These values are consistent with the known values for optimal path exponents in strongly disordered media. We investigate how the behavior…
We revisit the computation of the discrete version of Schramm's formula for the loop-erased random walk derived by Kenyon. The explicit formula in terms of the Green function relies on the use of a complex connection on a graph, for which a line bundle Laplacian is defined. We give explicit results in the scaling limit for the upper half-plane, the cylinder and the Moebius strip. Schramm's formula is then extended to multiple loop-erased random walks.
We show that in the loop-erased random walk problem, the exponent characterizing probability distribution of areas of erased loops is superuniversal. In d-dimensions, the probability that the erased loop has an area A varies as A^{-2} for large A, independent of d, for 2 <= d <= 4. We estimate the exponents characterizing the distribution of perimeters and areas of erased loops in d = 2 and 3 by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Our estimate of the fractal dimension z in two-dimensions is consistent with the known exact value 5/4. In three-dimensions, we get z = 1.6183 +- 0.0004. The expone…
We study the scaling limit of planar loop erased random walk (LERW) on the percolation cluster, with occupation probability $p\geq p_c$. We numerically demonstrate that the scaling limit of planar LERW$_p$ curves, for all $p>p_c$, can be described by Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) with a single parameter $κ$ which is close to normal LERW in Euclidean lattice. However our results reveal that the LERW on critical incipient percolation clusters is compatible with SLE, but with another diffusivity coefficient $κ$. Several geometrical tests are applied to ascertain this. All calculations are consi…
We give evidence that the functional renormalization group (FRG), developed to study disordered systems, may provide a field theoretic description for the loop-erased random walk (LERW), allowing to compute its fractal dimension in a systematic expansion in epsilon=4-d. Up to two loop, the FRG agrees with rigorous bounds, correctly reproduces the leading logarithmic corrections at the upper critical dimension d=4, and compares well with numerical studies. We obtain the universal subleading logarithmic correction in d=4, which can be used as a further test of the conjecture.
We calculate the fractal dimension $d_{\rm f}$ of critical curves in the $O(n)$ symmetric $(\vec ϕ^2)^2$-theory in $d=4-\varepsilon$ dimensions at 6-loop order. This gives the fractal dimension of loop-erased random walks at $n=-2$, self-avoiding walks ($n=0$), Ising lines $(n=1)$, and XY lines ($n=2$), in agreement with numerical simulations. It can be compared to the fractal dimension $d_{\rm f}^{\rm tot}$ of all lines, i.e. backbone plus the surrounding loops, identical to $d_{\rm f}^{\rm tot} = 1/ν$. The combination $ϕ_{\rm c}= d_{\rm f}/d_{\rm f}^{\rm tot} = νd_{\rm f}$ is the crossover e…
Single site height probabilities in the Abelian sandpile model, and the corresponding mean height $<h>$, are directly related to the probability $P_{\rm ret}$ that a loop erased random walk passes through a nearest neighbour of the starting site (return probability). The exact values of these quantities on the square lattice have been conjectured, in particular $<h> = 25/8$ and $P_{\rm ret} = 5/16$. We provide a rigourous proof of this conjecture by using a {\it local} monomer-dimer formulation of these questions.
Driven periodic elastic systems such as charge-density waves (CDWs) pinned by impurities show a non-trivial, glassy dynamical critical behavior. Their proper theoretical description requires the functional renormalization group. We show that their critical behavior close to the depinning transition is related to a much simpler model, $O(n)$-symmetric $ϕ^4$ theory in the unusual limit of $n\to -2$. We demonstrate that both theories yield identical results to 4-loop order and give both a perturbative and a non-perturbative proof of their equivalence. As we show, both theories can be used to desc…
The existing estimation of the upper critical dimension of the Abelian Sandpile Model is based on a qualitative consideration of avalanches as self-avoiding branching processes. We find an exact representation of an avalanche as a sequence of spanning sub-trees of two-component spanning trees. Using equivalence between chemical paths on the spanning tree and loop-erased random walks, we reduce the problem to determination of the fractal dimension of spanning sub-trees. Then, the upper critical dimension $d_u=4$ follows from Lawler's theorems for intersection probabilities of random walks and l…
Two-dimensional loop-erased random walks (LERWs) are random planar curves whose scaling limit is known to be a Schramm-Loewner evolution SLE_k with parameter k = 2. In this note, some properties of an SLE_k trace on doubly-connected domains are studied and a connection to passive scalar diffusion in a Burgers flow is emphasised. In particular, the endpoint probability distribution and winding probabilities for SLE_2 on a cylinder, starting from one boundary component and stopped when hitting the other, are found. A relation of the result to conditioned one-dimensional Brownian motion is pointe…

Self-avoiding walks (SAWs) and loop-erased random walks (LERWs) are two ensembles of random paths with numerous applications in mathematics, statistical physics and quantum field theory. While SAWs are described by the $n \to 0$ limit of $ϕ^4$-theory with $O(n)$-symmetry, LERWs have no obvious field-theoretic description. We analyse two candidates for a field theory of LERWs, and discover a connection between the corresponding and a priori unrelated theories. The first such candidate is the $O(n)$-symmetric $ϕ^4$ theory at $n=-2$ whose link to LERWs was known in two dimensions due to conformal…
As an image of the many-to-one map of loop-erasing operation $\LE$ of random walks, a self-avoiding walk (SAW) is obtained. The loop-erased random walk (LERW) model is the statistical ensemble of SAWs such that the weight of each SAW $ζ$ is given by the total weight of all random walks $π$ which are inverse images of $ζ$, $\{π: \LE(π)=ζ\}$. We regard the Brownian paths as the continuum limits of random walks and consider the statistical ensemble of loop-erased Brownian paths (LEBPs) as the continuum limits of the LERW model. Following the theory of Fomin on nonintersecting LERWs, we introduce …
Given a spanning forest on a large square lattice, we consider by combinatorial methods a correlation function of $k$ paths ($k$ is odd) along branches of trees or, equivalently, $k$ loop--erased random walks. Starting and ending points of the paths are grouped in a fashion a $k$--leg watermelon. For large distance $r$ between groups of starting and ending points, the ratio of the number of watermelon configurations to the total number of spanning trees behaves as $r^{-ν} \log r$ with $ν= (k^2-1)/2$. Considering the spanning forest stretched along the meridian of this watermelon, we see that t…
The variance in the winding number of various random fractal curves, including the self-avoiding walk, the loop-erased random walk, contours of FK clusters, and stochastic Loewner evolution, have been studied by numerous researchers. Usually the focus has been on the winding at the endpoints. We measure the variance in winding number at typical points along the curve. More generally, we study the winding at points where k strands come together, and some adjacent strands may be conditioned not to hit each other. The measured values are consistent with an interesting conjecture.
A global picture of a random particle movement is given by the convex hull of the visited points. We obtained numerically the probability distributions of the volume and surface of the convex hulls of a selection of three types of self-avoiding random walks, namely the classical Self-Avoiding Walk, the Smart-Kinetic Self-Avoiding Walk, and the Loop-Erased Random Walk. To obtain a comprehensive description of the measured random quantities, we applied sophisticated large-deviation techniques, which allowed us to obtain the distributions over a large range of the support down to probabilities fa…
We study unwrapped two-point functions for the Ising model, the self-avoiding walk and a random-length loop-erased random walk on high-dimensional lattices with periodic boundary conditions. While the standard two-point functions of these models have been observed to display an anomalous plateau behaviour, the unwrapped two-point functions are shown to display standard mean-field behaviour. Moreover, we argue that the asymptotic behaviour of these unwrapped two-point functions on the torus can be understood in terms of the standard two-point function of a random-length random walk model on Zd.…
The scaling limit of planar loop-erased random walks is described by a stochastic Loewner evolution with parameter kappa=2. In this note SLE(2) in the upper half-plane H minus a simply-connected compact subset K of H is studied. As a main result, the left-passage probability with respect to K is explicitly determined.
We investigate the dynamics of bound states of two interacting particles, either bosons or fermions, performing a continuous-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional lattice. We consider the situation where the distance between both particles has a hard bound, and the richer situation where the particles are bound by a smooth confining potential. The main emphasis is on the velocity characterizing the ballistic spreading of these bound states, and on the structure of the asymptotic distribution profile of their center-of-mass coordinate. The latter profile generically exhibits many internal fron…
Quantum walk represents one of the most promising resources for the simulation of physical quantum systems, and has also emerged as an alternative to the standard circuit model for quantum computing. Up to now the experimental implementations have been restricted to single particle quantum walk, while very recently the quantum walks of two identical photons have been reported. Here, for the first time, we investigate how the particle statistics, either bosonic or fermionic, influences a two-particle discrete quantum walk. Such experiment has been realized by adopting two-photon entangled state…
An efficient Quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for the simulation of bosonic systems on a lattice in a grand canonical ensemble is proposed. It is based on the mapping of bosonic models to the spin models in the limit of the infinite total spin quantum number. It is demonstrated, how this limit may be taken explicitly in the algorithm, eliminating the systematic errors. The efficiency of the algorithm is examined for the non-interacting lattice boson model and compared with the stochastic series expansion method with the heat-bath type scattering probability of the random walker.

An original approach is suggested to analysis of full quantum Liouville equation for single electron (quantum particle) interacting with ideal phonon gas (harmonic boson thermostat). It is shown that under the thermodynamic limit this equation can be exactly reduced to a system of evolution equations connecting density matrix of the electron and its simplest irreducible correlations with amplitudes of one, two, three and more phonon modes. Possible application of these new equations to explanation of the electron mobility 1/f-type fluctuations in semiconductors and other media is discussed. Th…
