The existence of Dark Matter (DM) is a well established fact since many decades, thanks to the observation of the effects of its gravitational interaction with the ordinary matter in the Universe. However, our knowledge of the Dark Matter features is still rather scarce. Indeed, one of the biggest quests in fundamental science today is the investigation of Dark Matter nature, from its origin to its composition, and the way its constituents interact with the ordinary matter, apart from gravity. Huge and ambitious efforts have been spent in the last years into its identification, concentrating especially on the search of viable Weakly Interacting Massive Particle candidates. However, no positive results have been achieved so far along this direction. On the other hand, many fascinating new ideas and models for its interpretation have been blooming: among them, an intriguing hypothesis is that the Dark Matter constituents could be neutral under Standard Model interactions, but they could interact through a new, still unknown, force under a "hidden" charge. This new hidden symmetry would be mediated by a massive gauge boson, the dark photon, which is expected to couple to the Standard Model via a kinetic mixing. The search for such a massive mediator has been pursued with large enthusiasm and dedication in the latest years, as its observation could be within the reach of many already existing experimental facilities, both based on accelerators
We report on a search for ultra-low-mass axion-like dark matter by analysing the ratio of the spin-precession frequencies of stored ultracold neutrons and $^{199}$Hg atoms for an axion-induced oscillating electric dipole moment of the neutron and an axion-wind spin-precession effect. No signal consistent with dark matter is observed for the axion mass range $10^{-24}~\textrm{eV} \le m_a \le 10^{-17}~\textrm{eV}$. Our null result sets the first laboratory constraints on the coupling of axion dark matter to gluons, which improve on astrophysical limits by up to 3 orders of magnitude, and also im…
We study the sensitivity of the NO$ν$A near detector to MeV-GeV dark matter while operating symbiotically with the neutrino program. We find that NO$ν$A could explore a large new region of parameter space over the next few years for dark matter masses below 100 MeV, reaching the thermal target for a scalar dark matter particle for some masses. This result represents a significant improvement over existing probes such as Babar, E137, and LSND.
We explore the sensitivity of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) near detector and the proposed DUNE-PRISM movable near detector to sub-GeV dark matter, specifically scalar dark matter coupled to the Standard Model via a sub-GeV dark photon. We consider dark matter produced in the DUNE target that travels to the detector and scatters off electrons. By combining searches for dark matter at many off-axis positions with DUNE-PRISM, sensitivity to this scenario can be much stronger than when performing a measurement at one on-axis position.
We find that the polarimetric observations of protoplanetary disks are useful to search for ultra-light axion dark matter. Axion dark matter predicts the rotation of the linear polarization plane of propagating light, and protoplanetary disks are ideal targets to observe it. We show that a recent observation puts the tightest constraint on the axion-photon coupling constant for axion mass $m\lesssim10^{-21}$eV.
Simplified models of the dark matter (co)annihilation mechanism predict striking new collider signatures untested by current searches. These models, which were codified in the coannihilation codex, provide the basis for a dark matter (DM) discovery program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) driven by the measured DM relic density. In this work, we study an exemplary model featuring $s$-channel DM coannihilation through a scalar diquark mediator as a representative case study of scenarios with strongly interacting coannihilation partners. We discuss the full phenomenology of the model, ranging …
We discuss a novel signature of dark matter production at the LHC resulting from the emission of an additional Higgs boson in the dark sector. The presence of such a dark Higgs boson is motivated simultaneously by the need to generate the masses of the particles in the dark sector and the possibility to relax constraints from the dark matter relic abundance by opening up a new annihilation channel. If the dark Higgs boson decays into Standard Model states via a small mixing with the Standard Model Higgs boson, one obtains characteristic large-radius jets in association with missing transverse …
We survey the sensitivity of past and present neutrino experiments to MeV-GeV scale dark matter, and find that these experiments possess novel sensitivity that has not yet fully explored. NO$ν$A and BEBC are found to rule out the scalar thermal target for dark matter masses between 10 MeV to 100 MeV with existing data, while CHARM-II and MINER$ν$A place somewhat weaker limits. These limits can be dramatically improved by off-axis searches using the NuMI beamline and the MicroBooNE, MiniBooNE or ICARUS detectors, and can even begin to probe the Majorana thermal target. We conclude that past and…
In 15 years of data taking the Pierre Auger Observatory has observed no events beyond $10^{11.3}$ GeV. This null result translates into an upper bound on the flux of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays implying $J (> 10^{11.3}$ GeV) $< 3.6 \times 10^{-5}$ km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$, at the 90\%C.L. We interpret this bound as a constraint on extreme-energy photons originating in the decay super-heavy dark matter (SHDM) particles clustered in the Galactic halo. Armed with this constraint we derive the strongest lower limit on the lifetime of hadronically decaying SHDM particles with masses in the ra…
If dark photons are massless, they couple to standard-model particles only via higher dimensional operators, while the kinetic mixing with photons, which motivates most of the current experimental searches, is absent. We consider the effect of possible flavor-changing magnetic-dipole couplings of massless dark photons in kaon physics. In particular, we study the branching ratio for the process $K^+\rightarrow π^+π^0 \bar γ$ with a simplified-model approach, assuming the chiral quark model to evaluate the hadronic matrix element. Possible effects in the $K^0$-$\bar K^0$ mixing are taken into ac…
The LIGO observation of gravitational waves from a binary black hole merger has begun a new era in fundamental physics. If new dark sector particles, be they bosons or fermions, can coalesce into exotic compact objects (ECOs) of astronomical size, then the first evidence for such objects, and their underlying microphysical description, may arise in gravitational wave observations. In this work we study how the macroscopic properties of ECOs are related to their microscopic properties, such as dark particle mass and couplings. We then demonstrate the smoking gun exotic signatures that would pro…
The electron population inferred to be responsible for the mini-halo within the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster is a steep power-law in energy with a slope of $3.8$. This is substantially different to that predicted by dark matter annihilation models. In this work we present a method of indirect comparison between the observed electron spectrum and that predicted for indirect dark matter emissions. This method utilises differences in the consequences of a given electron distribution on the subsequent spectral features of synchrotron emissions. To fully exploit this difference, by leveraging the fact …
In the present work we examine the implications on dark matter searches of the possibility of a partial decay of a neutron into a dark matter particle, slightly lighter than itself. Such a scenario recently proposed is required to bridge the discrepancy between the results of two different experiments measuring the life time of the neutron. It was subsequently suggested that this light dark matter candidate could make up the whole of dark matter in the universe. We thus first compute the nucleon cross section based on such models. Then we proceed explore the various signatures appearing in dar…
The lack of tangible evidence for non-gravitational interactions between dark and visible sectors drives the need for exploring new avenues of inferring dark matter properties through purely gravitational probes. In particular, addressing small-scale distribution of dark matter could lead to valuable new insights into its particle nature, either confirming predictions of the collisionless cold dark matter hypothesis or favouring models with suppressed small-scale matter power spectrum. In this work we propose a novel machine learning approach for constraining the abundance of galactic dark mat…
Toward understanding of dark energy, we propose a novel method to directly produce a chameleon particle and force its decay under controlled gas pressure in a laboratory-based experiment. {\it Chameleon gravity}, characterized by its varying mass depending on its environment, could be a source of dark energy, which is predicted in modified gravity. A remarkable finding is a correspondence between the varying mass and a characteristic pressure dependence of a stimulated photon-photon scattering rate in a dilute gas surrounding a focused photon-beam spot. By observing a steep pressure dependence…
We consider a dark sector containing a pair of almost degenerate states coupled to the Standard Model through a dark photon mediator. This set-up constitutes a simple realization of the inelastic dark matter scenario. The heaviest dark state is long-lived, in the limit of a small kinetic mixing among the dark photon and the Standard Model hypercharge gauge boson, and/or of a small mass splitting among the dark states. We study the prospects for detection of this scenario at proposed LHC experiments dedicated to search for long-lived particles, namely FASER, MATHUSLA, CODEX-b, AL3X, MAPP, ANUBI…
A TeV scale electroweak particle is a well motivated candidate for the dark matter (DM) of our Universe. Yet such a particle may only be detectable using indirect detection instruments sensitive to TeV-scale gamma rays that can result from dark matter annihilations. We present a mock analysis of the sensitivity for the present ground-based Cherenkov telescope array H.E.S.S. (High Energy Spectroscopic System) to detect TeV scale DM in the Galactic Center region. The work combines next-to-leading-logarithmic order calculations for the annihilation photon spectrum, as well as a comprehensive trea…
If dark matter stems from the background of a very light gauge boson, this gauge boson could exert forces on test masses in gravitational wave detectors, resulting in displacements with a characteristic frequency set by the gauge boson mass. We outline a novel search strategy to hunt for such dark matter, and show that both ground-based and future space-based gravitational wave detectors have the capability to make a 5$σ$ discovery in unexplored parameter regimes.
We propose a minimal model of a fermionic dark matter with a pseudoscalar mediator and N generation of vector-like quarks. We calculate the relic density and obtain new constraint on the generation of the aforementioned quarks. Concerning phenomenological aspects, we probe the presenting model via direct and indirect approaches. Finally, as an illustrative example, we evaluate a resonance case which has been (would be) the subject of major experiments aiming to detect new particles. Performing this analysis results in significant constraints on the coupling strength of the vector-like quarks.
At any epoch, particle physics must be open to completely unexpected discoveries, and that is reason enough to extend the reach of searches for ultra-high energy (UHE) photons. The observation of a population of photons with energies $E \gtrsim 100$ EeV would for example imply the existence of either a completely new physical phenomena, or particle acceleration mechanisms heretofore never seen or imagined. But as we outline in this Letter of Interest, there are also good arguments for super-heavy dark matter (SHDM) in a parameter range such that it could be discovered via its decays to, in par…
We study the chameleon field dark matter, dubbed \textit{scalaron}, in $F(R)$ gravity in the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) epoch. With an $R^{2}$-correction term required to solve the singularity problem for $F(R)$ gravity, we first find that the scalaron dynamics is governed by the $R^{2}$ term and the chameleon mechanism in the early universe, which makes the scalaron physics model-independent regarding the low-energy scale modification. In viable $F(R)$ dark energy models including the $R^{2}$ correction, our analysis suggests the scalaron universally evolves in a way with a bouncing oscil…
We study a simplified scenario in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with a split electroweak spectrum, in which only the singlino and higgsinos are light and other superpartners are decoupled. Serving as a dark matter candidate, a singlino-dominated neutralino $\tildeχ_1^0$ should have either resonant annihilation effects or sizable higgsino components to satisfy the observed relic abundance. The sensitivities of LHC searches and dark matter detection experiments are investigated. With an integrated luminosity of $30 (300) \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, $3l + E_\mathrm{T} \!\!\!\!\!\!\!/ \…
Extensions of the Standard Model (SM) gauge group with a new $U(1)_X$ predict an additional gauge boson. Through kinetic mixing with the SM photons featured by a coupling $ε$, the ensuing so-called dark photons $γ'$, which acquire mass as a result of the breaking of the gauge group $U(1)_X$, can interact with the SM field content. These massive dark photons can therefore decay to pairs of leptons, hadrons, or quarks, depending on their mass $m_{γ'}$. In this work, we discuss searches for dark photons in the mass range around and below one GeV at the LHeC and FCC-he colliders. The signal is giv…
The dark matter puzzle is one of the most important fundamental physics questions in 21 century. There is no doubt that solving the puzzle will be a new milestone for human beings in the way of deeper understanding the mother nature. Here we propose to use the Shanghai laser electron gamma source (SLEGS) to search for dark matter candidates particles, including dark pseudo scalar particles, dark scalar particles, and dark photons. Our simulations show that electron facilities like SLEGS with some upgrading could be competitive platforms in searching for light dark matter particles with mass un…
