A TeV scale electroweak particle is a well motivated candidate for the dark matter (DM) of our Universe. Yet such a particle may only be detectable using indirect detection instruments sensitive to TeV-scale gamma rays that can result from dark matter annihilations. We present a mock analysis of the sensitivity for the present ground-based Cherenkov telescope array H.E.S.S. (High Energy Spectroscopic System) to detect TeV scale DM in the Galactic Center region. The work combines next-to-leading-logarithmic order calculations for the annihilation photon spectrum, as well as a comprehensive treatment of detector effects and expected backgrounds. Forecast limits on the sensitivity of H.E.S.S. have been derived across the important TeV mass range, assuming different DM density profiles and focusing on the canonical WIMP dark matter candidate Wino. These limits test our present and future ability to probe the predicted thermal cross section for some of the most promising DM candidates that could be discovered in the coming decade.
The Glashow resonant scattering, $i.e$. ${\overlineν^{}_{e} + e^{-} \rightarrow W^{-} \rightarrow \text{anything}}$, offers us a possibility of disentangling $\overlineν^{}_{e}$ from the total astrophysical neutrino fluxes. Meanwhile, a great number of high-energy neutrino telescopes, with various detection mechanisms, are advancing towards a better understanding of one of the most energetic frontiers of the Universe. In this work, we investigate a connection between through-going muons at IceCube and the Glashow resonance signal through the channel $W^{-} \rightarrow μ$. We find that for IceC…

The emission of very-high-energy photons (VHE, E>100 GeV$) in blazars is closely connected to the production of ultra-relativistic particles and the role of these gamma-ray sources as cosmic particle accelerators. This work focuses on a selection of 22 gamma-ray objects from the 2BIGB catalog of high-synchrotron-peaked sources, which are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type in the 4FGL-DR2 catalog. We study these sources by means of a re-analysis of the first 10 years of gamma-ray data taken with the Fermi Large Area Telescope, including the attenuation by the extragalactic backgr…
List of contributions from the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Consortium presented at the 36th International Cosmic Ray Conference, July 24 - August 1 2019, Madison, WI, EUA.
The next generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescope, like CTA, is going to strongly improve the detection capability of high-energy cosmic rays. In our paper we discuss the possibility to use such apparatus to detect Earth-skimming tau neutrinos. Interestingly the analysis shows that order few events per year can be detected for energies above $10^8$ GeV in the optimistic case of larger neutrino fluxes produced by Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars. However, even for more conservative cosmogenic neutrino fluxes such rate will be also obtained, but for a decade of running. This estimate see…
The Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is one of the Small Size Telescopes (SSTs) proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) aimed at the 1 TeV to 300 TeV energy range. GCT will be equipped with a Compact High-Energy Camera (CHEC) containing 2048 pixels of physical size about 6$\times$6~mm$^2$, leading to a field of view of over 8 degrees. Electronics based on custom TARGET ASICs and FPGAs sample incoming signals at a gigasample per second and provide a flexible triggering scheme. Waveforms for every pixel in every event are read out are on demand without loss at over 600 events per sec…
An important aspect of the calibration of the Cherenkov Telescope Array is the pointing, which enables an exact alignment of each telescope and therefore allows to transform a position in the sky to a point in the plane of the Cherenkov camera and vice versa. The favoured approach for the pointing calibration of the medium size telescopes (MST) is the installation of an optical CCD-camera in the dish of the telescope that captures the position of the Cherenkov camera and of the stars in the night sky simultaneously during data taking. The adaption of this approach is presented in this proceedi…
We present a method to reconstruct the longitudinal profile of electrons in showers using Cherenkov telescopes. We show how the Cherenkov light collected by an array of telescopes can be transformed into the number of electrons as a function of atmospheric depth. This method is validated using air shower and simplified telescope simulations. The reconstruction of the depth in which the shower has the maximum number of electrons ($\mathrm{X_{max}}$) opens the possibility of cosmic ray composition studies with Cherenkov telescopes in the energy range from 10 to 100 TeV. A resolution of less than…
Identification of Cherenkov light generated by muons has been suggested as a promising way to dramatically improve the background rejection power of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) arrays at high energies. However, muon identification remains a challenging task, for which efficient algorithms are still being developed. We present an approach in which, rather than identifying Cherenkov light from muons, we simply consider the presence of Cherenkov light other than the main shower image in IACTs with large mirror area. We show that in the case of the H.E.S.S. array of five telesco…
In the framework of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the GCT (Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope) team is building a dual-mirror telescope as one of the proposed prototypes for the CTA small size class of telescopes. The telescope is based on a Schwarzschild- Couder (SC) optical design, an innovative solution for ground-based Cherenkov astronomy, which allows a compact telescope structure, a lightweight large Field of View (FoV) camera and enables good angular resolution across the entire FoV. We review the different mechanical and optical components of the telescope. In order to characterise t…
In the last decades an incredible amount of evidence for the existence of dark matter (DM) has been accumulating. At the same time, many efforts have been undertaken to try to identify what dark matter is made of. Indirect searches look at places in the Universe where dark matter is known to be abundant and seek for possible annihilation or decay signatures. Indirect searches with the Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope and Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are playing a crucial role in constraining the nature of the DM particle through the study of their annihilation into gamma ray…
Misaligned AGN (MAGNs), i.e., radio-loud AGNs with the jet not pointing directly towards us, represent a new class of GeV emitters revealed by the Fermi space telescope. Although they comprise only a small fraction of the high-energy sources, MAGNs are extremely interesting objects offering a different perspective to study high-energy processes with respect to blazars. The aim of this work is to evaluate the impact of the new-generation Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) on the MAGN class and propose possible observational strategies to optimize their detection.
The Cherenkov Telescope Array is the main global project of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy for the coming decades. Performance will be significantly improved relative to present instruments, allowing a new insight into the high-energy Universe [1]. The nominal CTA southern array will include a sub-array of seventy 4 m telescopes spread over a few square kilometers to study the sky at extremely high energies, with the opening of a new window in the multi-TeV energy range. The Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is one of the proposed telescope designs for that sub-array. The GCT prototype rec…
In the last decades a vaste amount of evidence for the existence of dark matter has been accumulated. At the same time, many efforts have been undertaken to try to identify what dark matter is. Indirect searches look at places in the Universe where dark matter is believed to be abundant and seek for possible annihilation or decay signatures. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) represents the next generation of imaging Cherenkov telescopes and, with one site in the Southern hemisphere and one in the Northern hemisphere, will be able to observe all the sky with unprecedented sensitivity and angu…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a planned gamma-ray observatory. CTA will incorporate about 100 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) at a Southern site, and about 20 in the North. Previous IACT experiments have used up to five telescopes. Subsequently, the design of a graphical user interface (GUI) for the operator of CTA involves new challenges. We present a GUI prototype, the concept for which is being developed in collaboration with experts from the field of Human-Computer Interaction. The prototype is based on Web technology; it incorporates a Python web server, Web Sock…
The presence of muons in air-showers initiated by cosmic ray protons and nuclei is well established as a powerful tool to separate such showers from those initiated by gamma rays. However, so far this approach has been fully exploited only for ground level particle detecting arrays. We explore the feasibility of using Cherenkov light from muons as a background rejection tool for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays at the highest energies. We adopt an analytical model of the Cherenkov light from individual muons to allow rapid simulation of a large number of showers in a hybrid mode.…
On October $10^{\rm th}$ 2018 started the commissioning of the first Large Size Telescope (LST) prototype at the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) northern site at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, Canary Island of La Palma (Spain). For a precise event energy reconstruction, an LST camera requires a uniform and constant calibration over a large dynamic range, up to $10^{4}$ photo-electrons (p.e.), for each camera photomultiplier tube (PMT). This paper describes the performance of the LST-1 camera calibration system (named CaliBox) in the first commissioning period and provides prelimi…
Ground-based Imaging Cherenkov Telescope Arrays observe the Cherenkov radiation emitted in extended atmospheric showers generated by cosmic gamma rays in the TeV regime. The rate of these events is normally overwhelmed by 2-3 orders of magnitude more abundant cosmic rays induced showers. A large fraction of these 'background' events is vetoed at the online trigger level, but a substantial fraction still goes through data acquisition system and is saved for the offline reconstruction. What kind of information those events carry, normally rejected in the analysis? Is there the possibility that a…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major ground-based gamma-ray observatory planned for the next decade and beyond. Consisting of two large atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (one in the southern hemisphere and one in the northern hemisphere), CTA will have superior angular resolution, a much wider energy range, and approximately an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity, as compared to existing instruments. The CTA science programme will be rich and diverse, covering cosmic particle acceleration, the astrophysics of extreme environments, and physics frontiers beyond the Sta…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will probe the non-thermal universe above 20 GeV up to several hundreds of TeV with a significant improvement in sensitivity and angular resolution compared to current experiments. Its outstanding capabilities will allow to increase the number of extragalactic cosmic accelerators detected at very high energy (VHE) and therefore to better constrain the population of VHE accelerators and the gamma-ray absorption processes in the intergalactic medium. For the first time in the history of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), CTA will be …

A wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope has been working in the surroundings of the Yakutsk array experiment since 2012. Its main function is to measure the waveform of the Cherenkov radiation signal induced by extensive air showers of cosmic rays. Analysis of the dataset collected by telescope is intended for the reconstruction of the parameters of the development of the shower in addition to the main shower characteristics measured by the rest of the array detectors. In this paper, the observed duration of the Cherenkov radiation signal as a function of the shower core distance is used to e…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array is an observatory dedicated to very high energy gamma rays with unprecedented sensitivity between 20 GeV and 300 TeV to be installed on two sites: Canary Island La Palma and Paranal Chile. Three telescope sizes will be used to cover the entire energy range. Two different telescope designs have been proposed to cover the intermediate energy range from 150 GeV to 5 TeV. One of the proposals is based on the traditional single mirror Davies-Cotton design, with two different camera concepts with different detection and processing schemes are under test. Another innovat…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array is expected to lead to the detection of many new supernova remnants in the TeV and multi-TeV range. In addition to the individual study of each SNR, the study of these objects as a population can help constraining the parameters describing the acceleration of particles and increasing our understanding of the mechanisms involved. We present Monte Carlo simulations of the population of Galactic SNRs emitting TeV gamma rays. We also discuss how the simulated population can be confronted with future observations to provide a novel test for the SNR hypothesis of cosmic…

The Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is one of the small-sized telescopes proposed for CTA to explore the energy range from a few TeV to hundreds of TeV with a field of view $\gtrsim 8^\circ$ and angular resolution of a few arcminutes. The GCT design features dual…

The Large-Sized Telescope (LST) prototype of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. It is designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, observing gamma rays down to energies of tens of GeV. The LST prototype started performing astronomical observations in November 2019 during the commissioning of the telescope and it has been taking data since then. In this contribution, we will present the tuning of the characteristics of the telescope in the Monte Carlo (MC) simulati…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Observatory will be the next-generation ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray observatory, sensitive from 20 GeV up to 300 TeV. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), currently in the commissioning phase, was inaugurated in October 2018 on La Palma (Spain). It is the first of four LST telescopes for CTA, to be built in La Palma. In 2021, LST-1 performed observations of one of the Galactic PeVatron candidates, LHAASO J2108+5157, recently discovered by the LHAASO collaboration. We present results of our analysis of the LST-1 data, putting strong constr…
IceAct is a proposed surface array of cost effective and compact Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) based small-size (50 cm) Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes above the IceCube in-ice detector. In coincidence with the in-ice and surface components of IceCube it forms a hybrid detector that enables new measurements combining the information from the Cherenkov light image, the surface particle footprint and the in-ice muon tracks of extensive air showers. During January 2019, two new versions of the IceAct telescope demonstrators featuring 61 SiPM pixels and improved optics were installed in the cen…
Machine learning, through the use of convolutional and recurrent neural networks is a promising avenue for the improvement of background rejection performance in imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. However, it is of paramount importance for science analysis that their performance remains stable against a wide range of observing conditions and instrument states. We investigate the stability of convolutional recurrent networks by applying them to background rejection in a toy Monte Carlo simulation of a Cherenkov telescope array. We then vary a range of observation and instrument parameter…
