Given a combinatorial $(d-1)$-sphere $S$, to construct a combinatorial $d$-sphere $S^{\hspace{.2mm}\prime}$ containing $S$, one usually needs some more vertices. Here we consider the question whether we can do one such construction without the help of any additional vertices. We show that this question has affirmative answer when $S$ is a flag sphere, a stacked sphere or a join of spheres. We also consider the question whether we can construct an $n$-vertex combinatorial $d$-sphere containing a given $n$-vertex combinatorial $d$-ball.
Using the Heegaard Floer homology of Ozsvath and Szabo we investigate obstructions to definite intersection pairings bounded by rational homology spheres. As an application we obtain new lower bounds for the four-ball genus of Montesinos links.
Given a properly embedded graph Gamma in a ball B and a punctured sphere Sigma properly embedded in B - Gamma, we examine the conditions on Gamma that are necessary to assure that Sigma is boundary parallel.
We construct non-constructible simplicial $d$-spheres with $d+10$ vertices and non-constructible, non-realizable simplicial $d$-balls with $d+9$ vertices for $d\geq 3$.
We call an integral homology sphere $\textit{non-trivially}$ bounds a rational homology ball if it is obstructed from bounding an integral homology ball. After Fintushel and Stern's well-known example $Σ(2,3,7)$, Akbulut and Larson recently provided the first infinite families of Brieskorn spheres non-trivially bounding rational homology balls: $Σ(2,4n+1,12n+5)$ and $Σ(3,3n+1,12n+5)$ for odd~$n$. Using their technique, we present new such families: $Σ(2,4n+3,12n+7)$ and $Σ(3,3n+2,12n+7)$ for even $n$. Also manipulating their main argument, we simply recover some classical results of Akbulut an…
Fintushel and Stern showed that the Brieskorn sphere $Σ(2,3,7)$ bounds a rational homology ball, while its non-trivial Rokhlin invariant obstructs it from bounding an integral homology ball. It is known that their argument can be modified to show that the figure-eight knot is rationally slice, and we use this fact to provide the first additional examples of Brieskorn spheres that bound rational homology balls but not integral homology balls: the families $Σ(2,4n+1,12n+5)$ and $Σ(3,3n+1,12n+5)$ for $n$ odd. We also provide handlebody diagrams for a rational homology ball containing a rationally…
In this paper, we study punctured spheres in two dimensional ball quotient compactifications $(X, D)$. For example, we show that smooth toroidal compactifications of ball quotients cannot contain properly holomorphically embedded $3$-punctured spheres. We also use totally geodesic punctured spheres to prove ampleness of $K_X + αD$ for $α\in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$, giving a sharp version of a theorem of the first author with G. Di Cerbo. Finally, we produce the first examples of bielliptic ball quotient compactifications modeled on the Gaussian integers.
In this paper we discuss the relationship between groups of diffeomorphisms of spheres and balls. We survey results of a topological nature and then address the relationship as abstract (discrete) groups. We prove that the identity component Diff_0(S^{2n-1}) of the group of smooth diffeomorphisms of S^{2n+1} admits no nontrivial homomorphisms to the group of C^1 diffeomorphisms of the ball B^m for any n and m. This result generalizes theorems of Ghys and Herman. We also examine finitely generated subgroups of Diff_0(S^n) and produce an example of a finitely generated torsion free group Gamma w…
Thurston norms are invariants of 3-manifolds defined on their second homology vector spaces, and understanding the shape of their dual unit ball is a (widely) open problem. W. Thurston showed that every symmetric polygon in Z^2, whose vertices satisfy a parity property, is the dual unit ball of a Thurston norm on a 3-manifold. However, it is not known if the parity property on the vertices of polytopes is a sufficient condition in higher dimension or if their are polytopes, with mod 2 congruent vertices, that cannot be realized as dual unit balls of Thurston norms. In this article, we provide …
We give a complete enumeration of all combinatorial 3-manifolds with 10 vertices: There are precisely 247882 triangulated 3-spheres with 10 vertices as well as 518 vertex-minimal triangulations of the sphere product $S^2\times S^1$ and 615 triangulations of the twisted sphere product $S^2_\times_S^1$. All the 3-spheres with up to 10 vertices are shellable, but there are 29 vertex-minimal non-shellable 3-balls with 9 vertices.
We introduce the non-pure versions of simplicial balls and spheres with minimum number of vertices. These are a special type of non-homogeneous balls and spheres (NH-balls and NH-spheres) satisfying a minimality condition on the number of maximal simplices. The main result is that minimal NH-balls and NH-spheres are precisely the simplicial complexes whose iterated Alexander duals converge respectively to a simplex or the boundary of a simplex.
This paper studies certain embedded spheres in closed affine manifolds. For $n \geq 3$, we investigate the dome bodies in a closed affine $n$-manifold $M$ with its boundary homeomorphic to a sphere under the assumption that a developing map restricted to a component of $\partial\hat{M}$ is an embedding onto a strictly convex sphere in $\mathbb{A}^n$. By using the recurrent property of an incomplete geodesic we show that dome bodies are compact. Then a maximal dome body is a closed solid ball bounded by a component of $\partial\hat{M}$, and hence equals $\hat{M}$. The main theorem is that the s…
We introduce the $k$-stellated spheres and compare and contrast them with $k$-stacked spheres. It is shown that for $d \geq 2k$, any $k$-stellated sphere of dimension $d$ bounds a unique and canonically defined $k$-stacked ball. In parallel, any $k$-stacked polytopal sphere of dimension $d\geq 2k$ bounds a unique and canonically defined $k$-stacked ball. We consider the class ${\cal W}_k(d)$ of combinatorial $d$-manifolds with $k$-stellated links. For $d\geq 2k+2$, any member of ${\cal W}_k(d)$ bounds a unique and canonically defined "$k$-stacked" $(d+1)$-manifold. We introduce the mu-vector o…
We compute the growth series and the growth functions of reducible and pseudo-Anosov elements of the pure mapping class group of the sphere with four holes with respect to a certain generating set. We prove that the ratio of the number of pseudo-Anosov elements to that of all elements in a ball with center at the identity tends to one as the radius of the ball tends to infinity.
In this paper we prove that any triangulation of a 2-dimensional sphere with a strict 4-coloring on its vertices can seen as the boundary of a triangulation of a 3-dimensional disk with the same vertices and preserving the 4-coloring.
The paper is devoted to finding the colorings of the edges of the 1-skeleton of triangulations of the 2-sphere in three colors so that for each face all three of its sides have different colors. First, by the method of adding one vertex inside the triangle or on its side, we enumerate all tiangulations with no more than 8 vertices. Next, one triangulation with 6 and 7 vertices, each with two different colors, was found. And finally, it is shown that other triangulations, which have less than 8 vertices, have one coloring each.
We construct embeddings of simplicial complexes into a (surface of a) simplicial ball whose triangulation has bounded degrees and low volume. This construction can be used either to efficiently "simplify a complicated space" by realizing it as a part of a ball/sphere, or to "complexify" a sphere - to give it a specific metric that inherits desired properties from an embedded complex.
The main goal of the paper is to solve some problems about shadow for the sphere generalized on the case of the ellipsoid. Here, the essence of the problem is to find the the minimal number of non-overlapping balls with centers on the sphere which are not holding the center of the sphere and such that every line passing through the center of the sphere would intersect at least one of the balls. Another method of solving the shadow problem for the sphere is also proposed.
The disk graph of a handlebody H of genus g at least 2 with m marked points on the boundary is the graph whose vertices are isotopy classes of disks disjoint from the marked points and where two vertices are connected by an edge if they can be realized disjointly. We show that for m=1 the disk graph contains quasi-isometrically embedded copies of R^2. The same holds true for the sphere graph of the double handlebody with one marked point provided that g is even.
We construct the first explicit example of a simplicial 3-ball B_{15,66} that is not collapsible. It has only 15 vertices. We exhibit a second 3-ball B_{12,38} with 12 vertices that is collapsible and evasive, but not shellable. Finally, we present the first explicit triangulation of a 3-sphere S_{18, 125} (with only 18 vertices) that is not locally constructible. All these examples are based on knotted subcomplexes with only three edges; the knots are the trefoil, the double trefoil, and the triple trefoil, respectively. The more complicated the knot is, the more distant the triangulation is …
We prove a discrete Jordan-Brouwer-Schoenflies separation theorem telling that a (d-1)-sphere H embedded in a d-sphere G defines two different connected graphs A,B in G such a way that the intersection of A and B is H and the union is G and such that the complementary graphs A,B are both d-balls. The graph theoretic definitions are due to Evako: the unit sphere of a vertex x of a graph G=(V,E) is the graph generated by {y | (x,y) in E} Inductively, a finite simple graph is called contractible if there is a vertex x such that both its unit sphere S(x) as well as the graph generated by V-{x} are…
In this note we study the Seifert rational homology spheres with two complementary legs, i.e. with a pair of invariants whose fractions add up to one. We give a complete classification of the Seifert manifolds with 3 exceptional fibers and two complementary legs which bound rational homology balls. The result translates in a statement on the sliceness of some Montesinos knots.
We construct 2^{Ω(n^{5/4})} combinatorial types of triangulated 3-spheres on n vertices. Since by a result of Goodman and Pollack (1986) there are no more than 2^{O(n log n)} combinatorial types of simplicial 4-polytopes, this proves that asymptotically, there are far more combinatorial types of triangulated 3-spheres than of simplicial 4-polytopes on n vertices. This complements results of Kalai (1988), who had proved a similar statement about d-spheres and (d+1)-polytopes for fixed d >= 4.
A graph G is intrinsically S^1-linked if for every embedding of the vertices of G into S^1, vertices that form the endpoints of two disjoint edges in G form a non-split link in the embedding. We show that a graph is intrinsically S^1-linked if and only if it is not outer-planar. A graph is outer-flat if it can be embedded in the 3-ball such that all of its vertices map to the boundary of the 3-ball, all edges to the interior, and every cycle bounds a disk in the 3-ball that meets the graph only along its boundary. We show that a graph is outer-flat if and only if it is planar.
