Space-based gravitational-wave detectors consist of a triangle of three spacecraft, which makes it possible to detect polarization modes of gravitational waves due to the motion of the detectors in space. In this paper we explore the ability of Taiji to detect the polarization modes in the parametrized post-Einsteinian framework. Assuming massive black hole binaries with the total mass of $M=4\times10^5\,M_{\odot}$ at redshift of $z=1$, we find that Taiji can measure the dipole and quadruple emission ($Δα_D/α_D$ and $Δα_Q/α_Q$) with the accuracy of up to $\sim 0.04\%$, with the fiducial value of $α_D=0.001$, the scalar transverse and longitudinal modes ($Δα_B$ and $Δα_L$) up to $\sim 0.01$, and the vector modes ($Δα_V$) up to $\sim 0.0005$.
Two polarization modes of gravitational wave are derived from the general relativity which are plus and cross modes. However, the alternative theories of gravity can yield the gravitational wave with up to six polarizations. Searching for the polarizations beyond plus and cross is an important test of general relativity. In principle, one space-borne detector, like LISA, could measure the gravitational wave polarizations from a long time observation with its orbital motion. With the comparable sensitivities, the joint LISA and TAIJI missions will improve the observations on the polarization pr…

The vector and scalar polarization modes of gravitational waves do not exist in General Relativity, and their detection would have significant impacts on fundamental physics. In this paper, we explored the detectability of these anomalous polarization modes in a gravitational wave background around 1 mHz with the future LISA-Taiji network. The inherent geometrical symmetry of the network largely simplifies the correlation analysis. By taking a suitable linear combination of the correlated outputs, the contribution of the standard tensor modes can be canceled algebraically, and the anomalous mo…
The space-borne gravitational wave (GW) detectors, LISA and TAIJI, are planned to be launched in the 2030s. The dual detectors with comparable sensitivities will form a network observing GW with significant advantages. In this work, we investigate the three possible LISA-TAIJI networks for the different location and orientation compositions of LISA orbit ($+60^\circ$ inclination and trailing the Earth by $20^\circ$) and alternative TAIJI orbit configurations including TAIJIp ($+60^\circ$ inclination and leading the Earth by $20^\circ$), TAIJIc ($+60^\circ$ inclination and co-located with LISA)…
Parity violation is a powerful observable to distinguish a cosmological background of Gravitational Waves (GWs) from an astrophysical one. Planar single GW interferometers, both on ground and in space, are unable to measure the net circular polarization of an isotropic Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB). In this paper, we explore the possibility of detecting circular polarization of an isotropic SGWB by cross-correlating two space-based detectors planned to be launched around 2034: LISA and Taiji. We compute the response of such a network to chirality and we perform a Fisher forec…
Taiji, a space-based gravitational-wave observatory, consists of three satellites forming an equilateral triangle with arm length of $3\times 10^6$ km, orbiting around the Sun. Taiji is able to observe the gravitational-wave standard siren events of massive black hole binary (MBHB) merger, which is helpful in probing the expansion of the universe. In this paper, we preliminarily forecast the capability of Taiji for improving cosmological parameter estimation with the gravitational-wave standard siren data. We simulate five-year standard siren data based on three fiducial cosmological models an…

Gravitational waves perturb the paths of photons, impacting both the time-of-flight and the arrival direction of light from stars. Pulsar timing arrays can detect gravitational waves by measuring the variations in the time of flight of radio pulses, while astrometry missions such as Gaia can detect gravitational waves from the time-varying changes in the apparent position of a field of stars. Just as gravitational waves impart a characteristic correlation pattern in the arrival times of pulses from pulsars at different sky locations, the deflection of starlight is similarly correlated across t…
Pulsar timing arrays are sensitive to gravitational wave perturbations produced by individual supermassive black hole binaries during their early inspiral phase. Modified gravity theories allow for the emission of gravitational dipole radiation, which is enhanced relative to the quadrupole contribution for low orbital velocities, making the early inspiral an ideal regime to test for the presence of modified gravity effects. Using a theory-agnostic description of modified gravity theories based on the parametrized post-Einsteinian framework, we explore the possibility of detecting deviations fr…
In this paper, the polarization modes of gravitational waves in Horndeski gravity are studied under the Palatini formalism. After obtaining the linearized equation of perturbations in Minkowski background, we find that the polarization modes of gravitational waves depend on the selection of the theoretical parameters. The polarization modes can be divided into quite rich cases by parameters. In all cases of parameter selection, there are $+$ and $\times$ modes propagating at the speed of light but no vector modes. The only difference from general relativity is scalar modes, especially the scal…
The observed time delays between photons with different circular polarizations from an astrophysical object provide a new, interesting way of testing the Einstein Equivalence Principle (EEP). In this paper, we constrain the EEP by considering both Shapiro time delay and Faraday rotation effects. We continue to search for astronomical sources that are suitable for testing the EEP accuracy, and obtain 60 extragalactic radio sources with multi-wavelength polarization angles in three different radio bands (20, 8.6, and 4.8 GHz) and 29 brightest stars within our own Milky Way galaxy with multi-colo…
We discuss exploration for isotropic gravitational wave backgrounds around 1 mHz by correlation analysis, targeting both parity odd and even polarization modes. Even though the space interferometer LISA alone cannot probe the two modes due to cancellations, the outlook is being changed drastically by the strong development of other space detectors such as Taiji. In fact, a heliocentric interferometer network holds a preferable geometrical symmetry {illuminated by a virtual sphere off-center from the Sun}. By utilizing an internal symmetry of data streams, we can optimally decompose the odd and…

The screened modified gravity (SMG) is a unified theoretical framework, which describes the scalar-tensor gravity with screening mechanism. Based on the gravitational-wave (GW) waveform derived in our previous work \citep{liu2018waveforms}, in this article we investigate the potential constraints on SMG theory through the GW observation of the future space-borne GW detectors, including LISA, TianQin and Taiji. We find that, for the EMRIs consisting of a massive black hole and a neutron star, if the EMRIs are at Virgo cluster, the GW signals can be detected by the detectors at quite high signif…
The detection of gravitational wave (GW) has opened a new window to test the theory of gravity in the strong field regime. In general relativity (GR), GW can only possess two tensor polarization modes, which are known as the $+$ and $\times$ modes. However, vector and scalar modes can exist in some modified theories of gravity, and we can test the gravitational theories by probing these extra polarization modes. As a space-borne GW detector, TianQin will be launched in the 2030s, and it is expected to observe plenty of GW signals, including those from nearly ten-thousands double white dwarfs (…
This article presents a theoretical limit on the Brans-Dicke (BD) parameter using a neutron star (NS) revolving around a galactic central engine. The assumption that the orbital radius is large enough allows to ignore strong curvature due to the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) and treat the problem with Newtonian dynamics. First, gravitational radiation polarizations are calculated in the BD theory. The scalar polarization, dominated by the dipole radiation, is then used to put a constraint on the BD parameter. The calculations are relatively simple and this makes it accessible to sophomo…

We present new constraints on cosmic variations of Newton's gravitational constant by making use of the latest CMB data from WMAP, BOOMERANG, CBI and ACBAR experiments and independent constraints coming from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We found that current CMB data provide constraints at the 10% level, that can be improved to 3% by including BBN data. We show that future data expected from the Planck satellite could constrain G at the 1.5% level while an ultimate, cosmic variance limited, CMB experiment could reach a precision of about 0.4%, competitive with current laboratory measurements.
General metric theories of gravity in four-dimensional spacetimes can contain at most six polarization modes (two spin-0, two spin-1 and two spin-2) of gravitational waves (GWs). It has been recently shown that, with using four GW non-coaligned detectors, a direct test of the spin-1 modes can be done in principle separately from the spin-0 and spin-2 modes for a GW source in particular sky positions [Hagihara et al., Phys. Rev. D 98, 064035 (2018)]. They have found particular sky positions that satisfy a condition of killing completely the spin-0 modes in a so-called null stream which is a lin…
Pulsar timing array (PTA) provides an excellent opportunity to detect the gravitational waves (GWs) in nanoHertz frequency band. In particular, due to the larger number of "arms" in PTA, it can be used to test gravity by probing the non-Einsteinian polarization modes of GWs, including two spin-1 shear modes labeled by "$sn$" and "$se$", the spin-0 transverse mode labeled by "$b$" and the longitudinal mode labeled by "$l$". In this paper, we investigate the capabilities of the current and potential future PTAs, which are quantified by the constraints on the amplitudes parameters $(c_b,c_{sn},c_…
The opening of the gravitational wave window by ground-based laser interferometers has made possible many new tests of gravity, including the first constraints on polarization. It is hoped that within the next decade pulsar timing will extend the window by making the first detections in the nano-Hertz frequency regime. Pulsar timing offers several advantages over ground-based interferometers for constraining the polarization of gravitational waves due to the many projections of the polarization pattern provided by the different lines of sight to the pulsars, and the enhanced response to longit…
The propagation of gravitational waves can reveal fundamental features of the structure of spacetime. For instance, differences in the propagation of gravitational-wave polarizations would be a smoking gun for parity violations in the gravitational sector, as expected from birefringent theories like Chern-Simons gravity. Here we look for evidence of amplitude birefringence in the third catalog of detections by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory and Virgo through the use of birefringent templates inspired by dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. From $71$ binary-black-hole signal…
We study the inflationary implications of a novel parity-violating gravity model, which modifies the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity by introducing the Nieh-Yan term coupled to an axion-like field. The parity-violating Nieh-Yan term results in the velocity birefringence of gravitational waves (GWs) and triggers the tachyonic instability only for one of the two circular polarization states. We consider that the inflaton is identified as the coupled axion-like field with a wiggly potential characterized by steep cliffs connected by smooth plateaus. During inflation, the temporary f…
Space-based gravitational-wave (GW) detectors, including LISA, Taiji and TianQin, are able to detect mHz GW signals produced by mergers of supermassive black hole binaries, which opens a new window for GW astronomy. In this article, we numerically estimate the potential capabilities of the future networks of multiple space-based detectors using Bayesian analysis. We modify the public package Bilby and employ the sampler PyMultiNest to analyze the simulated data of the space-based detector networks, and investigate their abilities for source localization and testing the parity symmetry of gravi…
The B-mode polarization spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) may be the smoking gun of not only the primordial tensor mode but also of the primordial vector mode. If there exist nonzero vector-mode metric perturbations in the early Universe, they are known to be supported by anisotropic stress fluctuations of free-streaming particles such as neutrinos, and to create characteristic signatures on both the CMB temperature, E-mode, and B-mode polarization anisotropies. We place constraints on the properties of the primordial vector mode characterized by the vector-to-scalar ratio $r_{…
We use direct numerical simulations of decaying primordial hydromagnetic turbulence with helicity to compute the resulting gravitational wave (GW) production and its degree of circular polarization. We find a clear dependence of the polarization of the resulting GWs on the fractional helicity of the turbulent source and we show that driven magnetic fields produce GWs more efficiently than magnetic fields that are initially present, leading to larger spectral amplitudes. The helicity does not have a huge impact on the maximum spectral amplitude in any of the two types of turbulence considered. …
We present constraints on the presence of isocurvature modes from the temperature and polarization CMB spectrum data from the WMAP satellite alone, and in combination with other datasets including SDSS galaxy survey and SNLS supernovae. We find that the inclusion of polarization data allows the WMAP data alone, as well as in combination with complementary observations, to place improved limits on the contribution of CDM and neutrino density isocurvature components individually. With general correlations, the upper limits on these sub-dominant isocurvature components are reduced to ~60% of the …

We study the stochastic gravitational waves from string gas cosmology. With the help of the Lambert W function, we derive the exact energy density spectrum of the stochastic gravitational waves in term of tensor-to-scalar. New feathers with the spectrum are found. First, the non-Hagedorn phase can be ruled out by the current B-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background. Second, the exact spectrum from the Hagedorn phase with a logarithmic term is shown to be unique in the measurable frequency range. Third, which is the most important, we find the string length can be constrained to b…

We present a complete analysis of the imprint of tensor anisotropies on the Cosmic Microwave Background for a class of f(R) gravity theories within the PPF-CAMB framework. We derive the equations, both for the cosmological background and gravitational wave perturbations, required to obtain the standard temperature and polarization power spectra, taking care to include all effects which arise from f(R) modifications of both the background and the perturbation equations. For R^n gravity, we show that for n different from 2, the initial conditions in the radiation dominated era are the same as th…
We consider effects of the Earth rotation on antenna patterns of a ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detector in a general metric theory that allows at most six polarization states (two spin-0, two spin-1 and two spin-2) in a four-dimensional spacetime. By defining the cyclically averaged antenna matrix for continuous GWs from a known pulsar, we show that waveforms for each polarization state can be uniquely reconstructed in time domain from a given set of the strain outputs at a single detector. Constraining the propagation speed of extra polarization modes, if they coexist with the transv…
A stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) will affect the CMB anisotropies via weak lensing. Unlike weak lensing due to large scale structure which only deflects photon trajectories, a SGWB has an additional effect of rotating the polarization vector along the trajectory. We study the relative importance of these two effects, deflection \& rotation, specifically in the context of E-mode to B-mode power transfer caused by weak lensing due to SGWB. Using weak lensing distortion of the CMB as a probe, we derive constraints on the spectral energy density ($Ω_{GW}$) of the SGWB, sourced at …
All modern routes leading to a quantum theory of gravity -- i.e., perturbative quantum gravitational one-loop exact correction to the global chiral current in the standard model, string theory, and perhaps even loop quantum gravity -- require supplementing the Einstein-Hilbert action with a parity-violating Chern-Simons term. Such a term leads to amplitude-birefringent gravitational wave propagation: i.e., one (circular) polarization state amplified with propagation while the other is attenuated. The proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is capable of observing gravitational wave …
Much of the information we hope to extract from the gravitational-waves signatures of compact binaries is only obtainable when we can accurately constrain the inclination of the source. In this paper, we discuss in detail a degeneracy between the measurement of the binary distance and inclination which limits our ability to accurately measure the inclination using gravitational waves alone. This degeneracy is exacerbated by the expected distribution of events in the universe, which leads us to prefer face-on systems at a greater distance. We use a simplified model that only considers the binar…
The curl (B) modes of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization anisotropies are a unique probe of the primordial background of inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs). Unfortunately, the B-mode polarization anisotropies generated by gravitational waves at recombination are confused with those generated by the mixing of gradient-mode (E-mode) and B-mode polarization anisotropies as CMB photons propagate through the Universe and are gravitationally lensed. We describe here a method for delensing CMB polarization anisotropies using observations of anisotropies in the cosmic 21-cm radiation …

STPpol, POLARBEAR and BICEP2 have recently measured the cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode polarization in various sky regions of several tens of square degrees and obtained BB power spectra in the multipole range 20-3000, detecting the components due to gravitational lensing and to inflationary gravitational waves. We analyze jointly the results of these three experiments and propose modifications of their analysis of the spectra to include in the model, in addition to the gravitational lensing and the inflationary gravitational waves components, also the effects induced by the cosmic p…
