We study singularity confinement phenomena in examples of delay-differential Painlevé equations, which involve shifts and derivatives with respect to a single independent variable. We propose a geometric interpretation of our results in terms of mappings between jet spaces, defining certain singularities analogous to those of interest in the singularity analysis of discrete systems, and what it means for them to be confined. For three previously studied examples of delay-differential Painlevé equations, we describe all such singularities and show they are confined in the sense of our geometric description.
We examine by singularity analysis an equation derived by reduction using Lie point symmetries from the Euler--Bernoulli Beam equation which is the Painlevé--Ince Equation with additional terms. The equation possesses the same leading-order behaviour and resonances as the Painlevé--Ince Equation and has a Right Painlevé Series. However, it has no Left Painlev% é Series. A conjecture for the existence of Left Painlevé Series for ordinary differential equations is given.
We derive the discrete Painlevé equations associated to the affine Weyl group E$_8^{(1)}$ that can be represented by an (in the QRT sense) "asymmetric" trihomographic system. The method used in this paper is based on singularity confinement. We start by obtaining all possible singularity patterns for a general asymmetric trihomographic system and discard those patterns which cannot lead to confined singularities. Working with the remaining ones we implement the confinement conditions and derive the corresponding discrete Painlevé equations, which involve two variables. By eliminating either of…
We study the analytic properties of a matrix discrete system introduced in [7]. The singularity confinement for this system is shown to hold generically, i.e. in the whole space of parameters except possibly for algebraic subvarieties. This paves the way to a generalization of Painleve analysis to discrete matrix models.
We perform a detailed study on the integrability of the Benney-Lin and KdV-Kawahara equations by using the Lie symmetry analysis and the singularity analysis. We find that the equations under our consideration admit integrable travelling-wave solutions. The singularity analysis is applied for the partial differential equations and the generic algebraic solution is presented.
After a brief introduction to the Painlevé property for ordinary differential equations, we present a concise review of the various methods of singularity analysis which are commonly referred to as Painlevé tests. The tests are applied to several different examples, and we discuss the connection between singularity structure and integrability for ordinary and partial differential equations.
In this paper, we have studied the integrability nature of a system of three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii type nonlinear evolution equations arising in the context of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates by applying the Painlevé singularity structure analysis. We show that only for two sets of parametric choices, corresponding to the known integrable cases, the system passes the Painlevé test.
We examine the validity of the results obtained with the singularity confinement integrability criterion in the case of discrete Painlevé equations. The method used is based on the requirement of non-exponential growth of the homogeneous degree of the iterate of the mapping. We show that when we start from an integrable autonomous mapping and deautonomise it using singularity confinement the degrees of growth of the nonautonomous mapping and of the autonomous one are identical. Thus this low-growth based approach is compatible with the integrability of the results obtained through singularity …
The integrability (solvability via an associated single-valued linear problem) of a differential equation is closely related to the singularity structure of its solutions. In particular, there is strong evidence that all integrable equations have the Painlevé property, that is, all solutions are single-valued around all movable singularities. In this expository article, we review methods for analysing such singularity structure. In particular, we describe well known techniques of nonlinear regular-singular-type analysis, i.e. the Painlevé tests for ordinary and partial differential equations. …
We apply the Painleve test for integrability of partial differential equations to a system of two coupled Burgers-type equations found by Foursov, which was recently shown by Sergyeyev to possess infinitely many commuting local generalized symmetries without any recursion operator. The Painleve analysis easily detects that this is a typical C-integrable system in the Calogero sense and rediscovers its linearizing transformation.
In this paper we present a rigorous method for deciding whether a birational three point mapping that has the singularity confinement property is integrable or not, based only on the structure of its (confined) singularity patterns. We also explain how the exact value of the dynamical degree for such a mapping may be deduced from the singularity patterns.
In the Painleve analysis of nonintegrable partial differential equations one obtains differential constraints describing the movable singularity manifold. We show, for a class of n-dimensional wave equations, that these constraints have a general structure which is related to the $n$-dimensional Bateman equation. In particular, we derive the exact expressions of the singularity manifold constraints for the n-dimensional sine-Gordon -, Liouville -, Mikhailov -, and double sine-Gordon equation, as well as two 2-dimensional polynomial field theory equations, and prove that their singularity manif…
We present a new approach to singularity confinement which makes it an efficient and reliable discrete integrability detector. Our method is based on the full-deautonomisation procedure, which consists in analysing non-autonomous extensions of a given discrete system obtained by adding terms that are initially absent, but whose presence does not alter the singularity pattern. A justification for this approach is given through an algebro-geometric analysis. We also introduce the notions of early and late confinement. While the former is a confinement that may exist already for the autonomous sy…
The `deautonomisation' of an integrable mapping of the plane consists in treating the free parameters in the mapping as functions of the independent variable, the precise expressions of which are to be determined with the help of a suitable criterion for integrability. Standard practice is to use the singularity confinement criterion and to require that singularities be confined at the very first opportunity. An algebro-geometrical analysis will show that confinement at a later stage invariably leads to a nonintegrable deautonomized system, thus justifying the standard singularity confinement …
We examine whether the Painleve property is necessary for the integrability of partial differential equations (PDEs). We show that in analogy to what happens in the case of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) there exists a class of PDEs, integrable through linearisation, which do not possess the Painleve property. The same question is addressed in a discrete setting where we show that there exist linearisable lattice equations which do not possess the singularity confinement property (again in analogy to the one-dimensional case).
We present a novel way to apply the singularity confinement property as a discrete integrability criterion. We shall use what we call a full deautonomisation approach, which consists in treating the free parameters in the mapping as functions of the independent variable, applied to a mapping complemented with terms that are absent in the original mapping but which do not change the singularity structure. We shall show, on a host of examples including the well-known mapping of Hietarinta-Viallet, that our approach offers a way to compute the algebraic entropy for these mappings exactly, thereby…
The integrability of a four-dimensional sixth-order bilinear equation associated with the exceptional affine Lie algebra $D_4^{(1)}$ is studied by means of the singularity analysis. This equation is shown to pass the Painlevé test in three distinct cases of its coefficients, exactly when the equation is effectively a three-dimensional one, equivalent to the BKP equation.
A new system of coupled higher-order nonlinear Schroedinger equations is proposed which passes the Painleve test for integrability well. A Lax pair and a multi-field generalization are obtained for the new system.
We consider the generalized Painlevé--Ince equation, \begin{equation*} \ddot{x}+αx\dot{x}+βx^{3}=0 \end{equation*} and we perform a detailed study in terms of symmetry analysis and of the singularity analysis. When the free parameters are related as $β=α^{2}/9~$the given differential equation is maximally symmetric and well-known that it pass the Painlevé test. For arbitrary parameters we find that there exists only two Lie point symmetries which can be used to reduce the differential equation into an algebraic equation. However, the generalized Painlevé--Ince equation fails at the Painlevé te…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation as the independent variable approaches zero and infinity in the space of initial values. We show that the limit set of each solution is compact and connected and, moreover, that any solution with the essential singularity at zero has an infinite number of poles and zeroes, and any solution with the essential singularity at infinity has infinite number of poles and takes value $1$ infinitely many times.
We proposed, in our previous paper, to characterize the Hirota-Miwa equation by means of the theory of triangulated category. We extend our argument in this paper to support the idea. In particular we show in detail how the singularity confinement, a phenomenon which was proposed to characterize integrable maps, can be associated with the projective resolution of the triangulated category.
We study a twistor correspondence based on the Joukowski map reduced from one for stationary-axisymmetric self-dual Yang-Mills and adapt it to the Painlevé III equation. A natural condition on the geometry (axissimplicity) leads to solutions that are meromorphic at the fixed singularity at the origin. We show that it also implies a quantisation condition for the parameter in the equation. From the point of view of generalized monodromy data, the condition is equivalent to triviality of the Stokes matrices and half-integral exponents of formal monodromy. We obtain canonically defined representa…
We test the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models for the Painlevé property. While the construction of finite action solutions ensures their meromorphicity, the general case requires testing. The test is performed for the equations in the homogeneous variables, with their first component normalised to one. No constraints are imposed on the dimensionality of the model or the values of the initial exponents. This makes the test nontrivial, as the number of equations and dependent variables are indefinite. A $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ system proves to have a $(4N-5)$-parameter family of solutions whose movab…
We apply the Painlevé Test for the Benney and the Benney-Gjevik equations which describe waves in falling liquids. We prove that these two nonlinear 1+1 evolution equations pass the singularity test for the travelling-wave solutions. The algebraic solutions in terms of Laurent expansions are presented.
We present a quasi-integrable two-dimensional lattice equation: i.e., a partial difference equation which satisfies a criterion of integrability, singularity confinement, although it has a chaotic aspect in the sense that the degrees of its iterates exhibit exponential growth. By systematic reduction to one-dimensional systems, it gives a hierarchy of ordinary difference equations with confined singularities, but with positive algebraic entropy including a generalized form of the Hietarinta-Viallet mapping. We believe that this is the first example of such quasi-integrable equations defined ov…
A demonstration of how the point symmetries of the Chazy Equation become nonlocal symmetries for the reduced equation is discussed. Moreover we construct an equivalent third-order differential equation which is related to the Chazy Equation under a generalized transformation, and find the point symmetries of the Chazy Equation are generalized symmetries for the new equation. With the use of singularity analysis and a simple coordinate transformation we construct a solution for the Chazy Equation which is given by a Right Painlevé Series. The singularity analysis is applied to the new third-ord…
In this paper matrix orthogonal polynomials in the real line are described in terms of a Riemann--Hilbert problem. This approach provides an easy derivation of discrete equations for the corresponding matrix recursion coefficients. The discrete equation is explicitly derived in the matrix Freud case, associated with matrix quartic potentials. It is shown that, when the initial condition and the measure are simultaneously triangularizable, this matrix discrete equation possesses the singularity confinement property, independently if the solution under consideration is given by recursion coeffic…
Painleve transcendents are usually considered as complex functions of a complex variable, but in applications it is often the real cases that are of interest. Under a reasonable assumption (concerning the behavior of a dynamical system associated with Painleve IV, as discussed in a recent paper), we give a number of results towards a classification of the real solutions of Painleve IV (or, more precisely, symmetric Painleve IV), according to their asymptotic behavior and singularities. We show the existence of globally nonsingular real solutions of symmetric Painleve IV for arbitrary nonzero v…
Two important notions of integrability for discrete mappings are algebraic integrability and singularity confinement, have been used for discrete mappings. Algebraic integrability is related to the existence of sufficiently many conserved quantities whereas singularity confinement is associated with the local analysis of singularities. In this paper, the relationship between these two notions is explored for birational autonomous mappings. Two types of results are obtained: first, algebraically integrable mappings are shown to have the singularity confinement property. Second, a proof of the n…
The explicit integrability of second order ordinary differential equations invariant under time-translation and rescaling is investigated. Quadratic systems generated from the linearisable version of this class of equations are analysed to determine therelationship between the Painlevé and singularity properties of the different systems. The transformation contains a parameter and for critical values, intimately related to the possession of the Painlevé Property in the parent second order equation, one finds a difference from the generic behaviour. This study is a prelude to a full discussion …
Using Painleve singularity structure analysis, we show that coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger (CHNLS) equations admit Painleve property. Using the results of Painleve analysis, we succeed in Hirota bilinearizing the CHNLS equations, one soliton and two soliton solutions are explictly obtained. Lax pairs are explictly constructed.
Bilinear forms for some nonlinear partial difference equations(discrete soliton equations) are derived based on the results of singularity confinement. Using the bilinear forms, the N-soliton and algebraic solutions of the discrete potential mKdV equation are constructed.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the generic ($D_6^{(1)}$-type) third Painlevé equation in the space of initial values as the independent variable approaches infinity (or zero) and show that the limit set of each solution is compact and connected. Moreover, we prove that any solution with essential singularity at infinity has an infinite number of poles and zeroes, and similarly at the origin.
In this paper we obtain explicit lower bounds for the radius of convergence of the Painlevé expansions of the Korteweg-de-Vries equation around a movable singularity manifold ${\Cal S}$ in terms of the sup norms of the arbitrary functions involved. We use this estimate to prove the well-posedness of the singular Cauchy problem on ${\Cal S}$ in the form of continuous dependence of the meromorphic solution on the arbitrary data.
We apply the Painleve test for integrability to a new discrete (differential-difference) nonlinear Schrodinger equation introduced by Leon and Manna. Since the singular expansions of solutions of this equation turn out to contain nondominant logarithmic terms, we conclude that the studied equation is nonintegrable. This result supports the observation of Levi and Yamilov that the Leon-Manna equation does not admit high-order generalized symmetries. As a byproduct of the singularity analysis carried out, we obtain a new discrete equation which should be integrable according to a conjecture of W…
A geometric approach to the equation found by Hietarinta and Viallet, which satisfies the singularity confinement criterion but exhibits chaotic behavior, is presented. It is shown that this equation can be lifted to an automorphism of a certain rational surface and can therefore be considered to be the action of an extended Weyl group of indefinite type. A method to calculate its algebraic entropy by using the theory of intersection numbers is presented.
The singularity confinement test is very useful for isolating integrable cases of discrete-time dynamical systems, but it does not provide a sufficient criterion for integrability. Quite recently a new property of the bilinear equations appearing in discrete soliton theory has been noticed: the iterates of such equations are Laurent polynomials in the initial data. A large class of non-integrable mappings of the plane are presented which both possess this Laurent property and have confined singularities.
The (2+1)-dimensional spherical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (SKP) equation of J.-K. Xue [Phys. Lett. A 314:479-483 (2003)] fails the Painleve test for integrability at the highest resonance, where a nontrivial compatibility condition for recursion relations appears. This compatibility condition, however, is sufficiently weak and thus allows the SKP equation to possess an integrable (1+1)-dimensional reduction, which is detected by the Weiss method of truncated singular expansions.
The Painlevé analysis introduced by Weiss, Tabor and Carnevale (WTC) in 1983 for nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE's) is an extension of the method initiated by Painlevé and Gambier at the beginning of this century for the classification of algebraic nonlinear differential equations (ODE's) without movable critical points. In these lectures we explain the WTC method in its invariant version introduced by Conte in 1989 and its application to solitonic equations in order to find algorithmically their associated Bäcklund transformation. A lot of remarkable properties are shared by the…
We present a number of second order maps, which pass the singularity confinement test commonly used to identify integrable discrete systems, but which nevertheless are non-integrable. As a more sensitive integrability test, we propose the analysis of the complexity (``algebraic entropy'') of the map using the growth of the degree of its iterates: integrability is associated with polynomial growth while the generic growth is exponential for chaotic systems.
We confront two integrability criteria for rational mappings. The first is the singularity confinement based on the requirement that every singularity, spontaneously appearing during the iteration of a mapping, disappear after some steps. The second recently proposed is the algebraic entropy criterion associated to the growth of the degree of the iterates. The algebraic entropy results confirm the previous findings of singularity confinement on discrete Painlevé equations. The degree-growth methods are also applied to linearisable systems. The result is that systems integrable through linearis…
The integrability of a system of two symmetrically coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations with parameter coefficients is tested by means of the singularity analysis. It is proven that the system passes the Painlevé test for integrability only in ten distinct cases, of which two are new. For one of the new cases, a Lax pair and a multi-field generalization are obtained; for the other one, the equations of the system are uncoupled by a nonlinear transformation.
An analysis of possible extension of the Painlevé test, to encompass the one-dimensional Vlasov equation, is performed. The extending requires a nontrivial generalization of the test. The proposed singularity analysis provides classification of the solutions possessing the Painlevé property by the order and number of pole surfaces. The compatibility conditions for the Laurent series have the form of an overdetermined system of 1st order differential equations, which themselves need a compatibility condition. This eventually leads to constraints which implicitly yield a family of solutions. The…
We describe the various types of singularities that can arise for second order rational mappings and we discuss the historical and present-day, practical, role the singularity confinement property plays as an integrability detector. In particular, we show how singularity analysis can be used to calculate explicitly the dynamical degree for such mappings.
The Painlevé-III equation with parameters $Θ_0=n+m$ and $Θ_\infty=m-n+1$ has a unique rational solution $u(x)=u_n(x;m)$ with $u_n(\infty;m)=1$ whenever $n\in\mathbb{Z}$. Using a Riemann-Hilbert representation proposed in \cite{BothnerMS18}, we study the asymptotic behavior of $u_n(x;m)$ in the limit $n\to+\infty$ with $m\in\mathbb{C}$ held fixed. We isolate an eye-shaped domain $E$ in the $y=n^{-1}x$ plane that asymptotically confines the poles and zeros of $u_n(x;m)$ for all values of the second parameter $m$. We then show that unless $m$ is a half-integer, the interior of $E$ is filled with …
In this letter, the integrability aspects of a generalized Fisher type equation with modified diffusion in (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions are studied by carrying out a singularity structure and symmetry analysis. It is shown that the Painlevé property exists only for a special choice of the parameter ($m=2$). A Bäcklund transformation is shown to give rise to the linearizing transformation to the linear heat equation for this case ($m=2$). A Lie symmetry analysis also picks out the same case ($m=2$) as the only system among this class as having nontrivial infinite dimensional Lie algebra of symmet…
The first half of the thesis concerns Abelian vortices and Yang-Mills (YM) theory. It is proved that the 5 types of vortices recently proposed by Manton are symmetry reductions of (A)SDYM equations with suitable gauge groups and symmetry groups acting as isometries in a 4-manifold. As a consequence, the twistor integrability results of such vortices can be derived. It is presented a natural definition of their kinetic energy and thus the metric of the moduli space was calculated by the Samols' localisation method. Then, a modified version of the Abelian-Higgs model is proposed in such a way th…
The connection between the complex Sine and Sinh-Gordon equations on the complex plane associated with a Weierstrass type system and the possibility of construction of several classes of multivortex solutions is discussed in detail. We perform the Painlevé test and analyse the possibility of deriving the Bäcklund transformation from the singularity analysis of the complex Sine-Gordon equation. We make use of the analysis using the known relations for the Painlevé equations to construct explicit formulae in terms of the Umemura polynomials which are $τ$-functions for rational solutions of the t…
The discrete KdV (dKdV) equation, the pinnacle of discrete integrability, is often thought to possess the singularity confinement property because it confines on an elementary quadrilateral. Here we investigate the singularity structure of the dKdV equation through reductions of the equation, obtained for initial conditions on a staircase with height 1, and show that it is much more subtle than one might assume. We first study the singularities for the mappings obtained after reduction and contrast these with the singularities that arise in non-integrable generalizations of those mappings. We …
We consider an integrability test for ultradiscrete equations based on the singularity confinement analysis for discrete equations. We show how singularity pattern of the test is transformed into that of ultradiscrete equation. The ultradiscrete solution pattern can be interpreted as a perturbed solution. We can also check an integrability of a given equation by a perturbation growth of a solution, namely Lyapunov exponent. Therefore, singularity confinement test and Lyapunov exponent are related each other in ultradiscrete equations and we propose an integrability test from this point of view…
Assuming that there exist at least two fermionic parameters, the classical N= 1 supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries (SKdV) system can be transformed to some coupled bosonic systems. The boson fields in the bosonized SKdV (BSKdV) systems are defined on even Grassmann algebra. Due to the intrusion of other Grassmann parameters, the BSKdV systems are different from the usual non-supersymmetric integrable systems, and many more abundant solution structures can be unearthed. With the help of the singularity analysis, the Painlevé property of the BSKdV system is proved and a Bäcklund transformation (BT…
We show that the recently derived ($q$-) discrete form of the Painlevé VI equation can be related to the discrete P$_{\rm III}$, in particular if one uses the full freedom in the implementation of the singularity confinement criterion. This observation is used here in order to derive the bilinear forms and the Schlesinger transformations of both $q$-P$_{\rm III}$ and $q$-P$_{\rm VI}$.
