I present a short overview of the latest developments in indirect searches for dark matter using gamma rays, X-rays, charged cosmic rays, micro waves, radio waves, and neutrinos. I briefly outline key past, present, and future experiments and their search strategies. In several searches there are exciting anomalies which could potentially be emerging dark matter signals. I discuss these anomalous signals, and some future prospects to determine their origins.
We study the indirect detection of dark matter when the local dark matter velocity distribution depends upon position, as expected for the Milky Way and its dwarf spheroidal satellites, and the annihilation cross-section is not purely s-wave. Using a phase-space distribution consistent with the dark matter density profile, we present estimates of cosmic and gamma-ray fluxes from dark matter annihilations. The expectations for the indirect detection of dark matter can differ significantly from the usual calculation that assumes that the velocity of the dark matter particles follows a Maxwell-Bo…
Gamma rays from the annihilation of dark matter particles in the Galactic halo provide a particularly promising means of indirectly detecting dark matter. Here, we demonstrate that pronounced spectral features at energies near the dark matter particles' mass, which are a generic prediction for most models, can significantly improve the sensitivity of gamma-ray telescopes to dark matter signals. We derive projected limits on such features (including the traditionally looked-for line signals) and show that they can be much more efficient in constraining the nature of dark matter than the model-i…
This article summarizes the status of Indirect and Direct searches for Dark Matter, with a special focus and a critical look on the former. It is the write-up of a rapporteur talk given at the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2015) in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Indirect searches for dark matter (DM) have conventionally been applied to the products of DM annihilation or decay. If DM couples to light force carriers, however, it can be captured into bound states via dissipation of energy that may yield detectable signals. We extend the indirect searches to DM bound state formation and transitions between bound levels, and constrain the emission of unstable dark photons. Our results significantly refine the predicted signal flux that could be observed in experiments. As a concrete example, we use Fermi-LAT dwarf spheroidal observations to obtain constrai…
The astronomical dark matter could be made of weakly interacting and massive particles. If so, these species would be abundant inside the Milky Way, where they would continuously annihilate and produce cosmic rays. Those annihilation products are potentially detectable at the Earth, and could provide indirect clues for the presence of dark matter species within the Galaxy. We will review here the various cosmic radiations which the dark matter can produce. We will examine how they propagate throughout the Milky Way and compare the dark matter yields with what pure astrophysical processes are e…
We investigate the feasibility of the indirect detection of dark matter in a simple model using the neutrino portal. The model is very economical, with right-handed neutrinos generating neutrino masses through the Type-I seesaw mechanism and simultaneously mediating interactions with dark matter. Given the small neutrino Yukawa couplings expected in a Type-I seesaw, direct detection and accelerator probes of dark matter in this scenario are challenging. However, dark matter can efficiently annihilate to right-handed neutrinos, which then decay via active-sterile mixing through the weak interac…
In this paper, we study the prospects for determining the nature of neutrinos in the context of a supersymmetric $B-L$ extension of the standard model by using dark matter indirect detection signals and bounds on $N_{\text{eff}}$ from the cosmic microwave background data. The model contains two new dark matter candidates whose dominant annihilation channels produce more neutrinos than neutralino dark matter in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The photon and neutrino counts may then be used to discriminate between the two models. If the dark matter comes from the B-L sector, its indir…
Using limits on photon flux from Dwarf Spheroidal galaxies, we place bounds on the parameter space of models in which Dark Matter annihilates into multiple final state particle pair channels. We derive constraints on effective operator models with Dark Matter couplings to third generation fermions and to pairs of Standard Model vector bosons. We present limits in various slices of model parameter space along with estimations of the region of maximal validity of the effective operator approach for indirect detection. We visualize our bounds for models with multiple final state annihilations by …
This white paper describes the basic idea for indirect dark matter searches using antideuterons. Low energy antideuterons produced by dark matter annihilations/decays provide an attractive dark matter signature, due to the low astrophysical background. The current and future experiments have a strong potential to detect antideuterons from dark matter. They are complementary not only with each other, but also with other dark matter searches.
We study a fermionic dark matter in a non-supersymmetric extension of the standard model with a family symmetry based on D6xZ2xZ2. In our model, the final state of the dark matter annihilation is determined to be e+ e- by the flavor symmetry, which is consistent with the PAMELA result. At first, we show that our dark matter mass should be within the range of 230 GeV - 750 GeV in the WMAP analysis combined with mu to e gamma constraint. Moreover we simultaneously explain the experiments of direct and indirect detection, by simply adding a gauge and D6 singlet real scalar field. In the direct de…
A Bose-Einstein condensate of the hexaquark particle known as d$^*$(2380) has been recently proposed as a dark matter candidate by the authors in Bashkanov \& Watts 2020. This particle can produced in an abundant condensate state in the early universe and is argued to satisfy all the stability and weak interaction constraints of a viable dark matter candidate. This dark matter candidate is able to evade direct detection bounds and is suggested to have the best observational prospects in the form of indirect astrophysical emissions due to the decay of the d$^*$ condensate. In this work we test …
Automated tools for the computation of particle physics' processes have become the backbone of phenomenological studies beyond the standard model. Here, we present MadDM v3.2. This release enables the fully automated computation of loop-induced dark-matter annihilation processes, relevant for indirect detection observables. Special emphasis lies on the annihilation into $γX$, where $X=γ, Z, h$ or any new particle even under the dark symmetry. These processes lead to the sharp spectral feature of monochromatic gamma lines -- a smoking-gun signature of dark matter in our Galaxy. MadDM provides t…
We perform a detailed study of the dark Z' portal using a generic parametrization of the Z'-quarks couplings, both for light (8-15)GeV and heavy (130-1000)GeV dark matter scenarios. We present a comprehensive study of the collider phenomenology including jet clustering, hadronization, and detector artifacts, which allows us to derive accurate bounds from the search for new resonances in dijet events and from mono-jet events in the LHC 7TeV, LHC 8TeV, and Tevatron 1.96 TeV data. We also compute the dark matter relic abundance, the relevant scattering cross sections and pair-annihilation spectru…
We have investigated neutralino dark matter in the framework of minimal supersymmetric Standard Model focusing on the coannihilatioin region. In this region, where the particle whose mass is tightly degenerated with the neutralino dark matter exists, we can solve the Lithium problem in the case of lepton flavor being violated. It turns out that Sommerfeld enhancement is important in the coannihilation region so that the dark matter signal becomes large enough to be observed by the current sensitivity of indirect experiments.
The indirect detection of dark matter annihilation and decay using observations of photons, charged cosmic rays, and neutrinos offers a promising means of identifying the particle nature of this elusive component of the universe. The last decade has seen substantial advances in observational data sets, complemented by new insights from numerical simulations, which together have enabled for the first time strong constraints on dark matter particle models, and have revealed several intriguing hints of possible signals. This review provides an introduction to indirect detection methods and an ove…
These lectures, presented at the 2021 Les Houches Summer School on Dark Matter, provide an introduction to key methods and tools of indirect dark matter searches, as well as a status report on the field circa summer 2021. Topics covered include the possible effects of energy injection from dark matter on the early universe, methods to calculate both the expected energy distribution and spatial distribution of particles produced by dark matter interactions, an outline of theoretical models that predict diverse signals in indirect detection, and a discussion of current constraints and some claim…
Dark matter particles could annihilate into light and metastable mediators subsequently decaying far away from where they are produced. In this scenario, the indirect signatures of dark matter are altered with respect to the conventional situation where standard model particles are directly injected where annihilation happens. We explore here this new phenomenology for which we devise the tools. We calculate the effective dark matter distribution resulting from the smearing by mediator propagation. We derive the fluxes of mediators and their decay particles. We study how the $J$-factor, which …
The gravitino in models with a small violation of R-parity is a well-motivated decaying dark matter candidate that leads to a cosmological scenario that is consistent with big bang nucleosynthesis and thermal leptogenesis. The gravitino lifetime is cosmologically long-lived since its decays are suppressed by the Planck-scale as well as the small R-parity violating parameter. We discuss the signals in different cosmic-ray species coming from the decay of gravitino dark matter, namely gamma rays, positrons, antiprotons, antideuterons and neutrinos. Comparison to cosmic-ray data can be used to co…
We review the prospects of detecting supersymmetric dark matter in the framework of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, and compare indirect with direct detection capabilities.
Merging galaxy clusters such as the Bullet Cluster provide a powerful testing ground for indirect detection of dark matter. The spatial distribution of the dark matter is both directly measurable through gravitational lensing and substantially different from the distribution of potential astrophysical backgrounds. We propose to use this spatial information to identify the origin of indirect detection signals, and we show that even statistical excesses of a few sigma can be robustly tested for consistency--or inconsistency--with a dark matter source. For example, our methods, combined with alre…
The observed anomalous excess of high-energy cosmic ray (CR) positrons is widely discussed as possible indirect evidence for dark matter (DM). However, any source of cosmic positrons is inevitably the source of gamma radiation. The least model dependent test of CR anomalies interpretation via DM particles decays (or annihilation) is connected with gamma-ray background due to gamma overproduction in such processes. In this work, we impose an observational constraint on gamma ray production from DM. Then, we study the possible suppression of gamma yield in the DM decays into identical final ferm…
We study indirect detection signals from solar annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles into light right-handed (RH) neutrinos with a mass in a $1-5$ GeV range. These RH neutrinos can have a sufficiently long lifetime to allow them to decay outside the Sun and their delayed decays can result in a signal in gamma rays from the otherwise `dark' solar direction, and also a neutrino signal that is not suppressed by the interactions with solar medium. We find that the latest Fermi-LAT and IceCube results place limits on the gamma ray and neutrino signals, respectively. Combined photon and neutrin…
These lectures, presented at TASI 2016: Anticipating the Next Discoveries in Particle Physics, provide an introduction to some key methods and tools of indirect dark matter searches. Topics covered include estimation of dark matter signals, thermal freezeout and related scenarios, potential effects of dark matter annihilation on the early universe, modeling photon signals from annihilation or decay, and a brief and qualitative introduction to diffusive propagation of cosmic rays. The second half of the notes gives a status report (circa summer 2016) on selected experimental searches, the resul…
In the early years, cosmic rays contributed essentially to particle physics through the discovery of new particles. Will history repeat itself? As with the discovery of the charged pion, the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson may portend a rich new set of particles within reach of current and near future experiments. These may be discovered and studied by cosmic rays through the indirect detection of dark matter.
Indirect searches for dark matter are based on detecting an anomalous flux of photons, neutrinos or cosmic-rays produced in annihilations or decays of dark matter candidates gravitationally accumulated in heavy cosmological objects, like galaxies, the Sun or the Earth. Additionally, evidence for dark matter that can also be understood as indirect can be obtained from early universe probes, like fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature, the primordial abundance of light elements or the Hydrogen 21-cm line. The techniques needed to detect these different signatures require ver…
We study in detail the impact of the current uncertainty in nucleon matrix elements on the sensitivity of direct and indirect experimental techniques for dark matter detection. We perform two scans in the framework of the cMSSM: one using recent values of the pion-sigma term obtained from Lattice QCD, and the other using values derived from experimental measurements. The two choices correspond to extreme values quoted in the literature and reflect the current tension between different ways of obtaining information about the structure of the nucleon. All other inputs in the scans, astrophysical…
The complementarity of direct, indirect and collider searches for dark matter has improved our understanding concerning the properties of the dark matter particle. I will review the basic concepts that these methods rely upon and highlight what are the most important information they provide when it comes down to interpret the results in terms of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Later, I go over some of the latest results emphasizing the implications to dark matter theory in a broad sense and point out recent developments and prospects in the field.
We study observational consequences arising from dark matter (DM) of non-thermal origin, produced by dark freeze-out from a hidden sector heat bath. We assume this heat bath was populated by feebly-coupled mediator particles, produced via a Higgs portal interaction with the Standard Model (SM). The dark sector then attained internal equilibrium with a characteristic temperature different from the SM photon temperature. We find that even if the coupling between the DM and the SM sectors is very weak, the scenario allows for indirect observational signals. We show how the expected strength of th…
We derive the spectra arising from non-relativistic dark matter annihilations or decays into intermediary particles with arbitrary spin, which subsequently produce neutrinos or photons via two-body decays. Our approach is model independent and predicts spectral features restricted to a kinematic box. The overall shape within that box is a polynomial determined by the polarization of the decaying particle. We illustrate our findings with two examples. First, with the neutrino spectra arising from dark matter annihilations into the massive Standard Model gauge bosons. Second, with the gamma-ray …
We consider the prospects for the indirect detection of low mass dark matter which couples dominantly to quarks. If the center of mass energy is below about 280 MeV, the kinematically allowed final states will be dominated by photons and neutral pions, producing striking signatures at gamma ray telescopes. In fact, an array of new instruments have been proposed, which would greatly improve sensitivity to photons in this energy range. We find that planned instruments can improve on current sensitivity to dark matter models of this type by up to a few orders of magnitude.
We present an extension of the Standard Model, containing a fermion dark matter candidate and two real scalar singlets, where the observed dark matter abundance is produced via freeze-out before the electroweak phase transition. We show that in this case the dark matter annihilation channels determining its freeze-out are different from those producing indirect detection signal. We present a benchmark model where the indirect annihilation cross-section differs from the freeze-out one. The model also has a gravitational wave signature due to the first order electroweak phase transition.
In a companion paper (to be presented), lattice field theory methods are used to show that in two-color, two-flavor QCD there are stable nuclear states in the spectrum. As a commonly studied theory of composite dark matter, this motivates the consideration of possible nuclear physics in this and other composite dark sectors. In this work, early Universe cosmology and indirect detection signatures are explored for both symmetric and asymmetric dark matter, highlighting the unique features that arise from considerations of dark nuclei and associated dark nuclear processes. The present day dark m…
We investigate the synchrotron emission (both intensity and morphology) associated with generic dark matter particles and make predictions for the PLANCK experiment using the FERMI data and a model for the astrophysical sources. Our results indicate that the morphology of the dark matter plus astrophysical source synchrotron emission is frequency-dependent. We show that a thorough comparison between LFI and HFI data can potentially provide a new tool for constraining the dark matter particle mass.
Recent Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Milky Way have placed strong limits on the gamma-ray flux from dark matter annihilation. In order to produce the strongest limit on the dark matter annihilation cross-section, the observations of each dwarf galaxy have typically been "stacked" in a joint-likelihood analysis, utilizing optical observations to constrain the dark matter density profile in each dwarf. These limits have typically been computed only for singular annihilation final states, such as $b\bar{b}$ or $τ^+τ^-$. In this paper, we generalize this approach by pr…
We discuss simple extensions of the Standard Model featuring a (fermionic) stable DM candidate interacting with SM fermions through a $Z^{'}$ mediator. These kind of models offer a wide phenomenology but result, at the same time, particularly manageable, given the limited number of free-parameters, and offer a broad LHC phenomenology. We will discuss the impact Direct and Indirect Dark Matter searches, assuming the latter to be thermal WIMPs. We will show in particular that the combinations of the limits on the DM Spin Independent and Spin Dependent scattering cross-section on nuclei already e…
I summarize here and discuss the results of presently operating neutrino telescopes in searching for a signal of dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs).

In this paper we revisit constraints on the leptophilic dark matter (DM) arising from the DM indirect detection experiments. Interactions between the charged leptons and the scalar-type, Dirac-type or vector-type DM are written in terms of effective operators. After classifying all interactions that may give non-zero signals in indirect detections, we study constraints on the parameter space of these effective interactions from the latest results of AMS-02, Planck, Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S., as well as the observed relic abundance. Main results are summarized in the Table. I. It shows that the $τ…
In this review, I discuss briefly theoretical scenarios concerning the interpretation of recent results from indirect and direct dark matter searches, with emphasis on the former.
As part of the Snowmass process, the Cosmic Frontier Indirect-Detection subgroup (CF2) has drawn on input from the Cosmic Frontier and the broader Particle Physics community to produce this document. The purposes of this report are to identify opportunities for dark matter science through indirect detection, to give an overview of the primary scientific drivers for indirect searches for dark matter, and to survey current and planned experiments that have, as a large part of their scientific program, the goal of searching for indirect (or astrophysical) signatures of dark matter. We primarily a…
In this paper, we will describe the results of SUSY parameter space searches including minimal supergravity, non-universal supergravity and minimal supersymmetry and the implications on the indirect detection of neutralino dark matter. We give special attention to the effects of detector thresholds, solar absorption of neutrinos and hadronization of neutralino annihilation products. These effects are known to be important in calculating accurate event rates.
Recently, a claim of possible evidence for Dark Matter in data from the Fermi LAT experiment was made by Goodenough and Hooper [8]. We test the Dark Matter properties consistent with their claim in terms of the MSSM by a 24-dimensional parameter scan using nested sampling, excluding all but a very small region of the MSSM. Although this claim is very preliminary, and not made by the Fermi LAT experiment, our scan shows a possible approach for the analysis of future firm evidence from an indirect detection experiment, and its potential for heavily constraining models.
Indirect detection of dark matter particles, i.e. the detection of annihilation or decay products of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, has entered a pivotal phase as experiments reach sensitivities that probe the most interesting parameter space. This period is naturally accompanied by claims of detection. In this contribution I discuss and compare different probes (gamma-rays, neutrinos and charged cosmic rays) and review the status and prospects of constraints and recent detection claims.
We study the thermal transport occurring in the system of solar captured dark matter (DM) and explore its impact on the DM indirect search signal. We particularly focus on the scenario of self-interacting DM (SIDM). The flows of energies in and out of the system are caused by solar captures via DM-nucleon and DM-DM scatterings, the energy dissipation via DM annihilation, and the heat exchange between DM and solar nuclei. We examine the DM temperature evolution and demonstrate that the DM temperature can be higher than the core temperature of the Sun if the DM-nucleon cross section is sufficien…
In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) the lightest superparticle (LSP) can be a TeV neutralino (mainly dominated by higgsino or wino) which serves as a dark matter candidate with correct thermal relic density. In this work we confront the 1-2 TeV neutralino dark matter with the latest direct and indirect detections from PandaX and AMS-02/DAMPE. Considering various scenarios with decoupled sfermions, with \textit{A}-mediated annihilation, with squark or stop coannihilation, we find that the parameter space is stringently constrained by the direct detection limits. In the allowed p…
There exists a general model framework where dark matter can be a vanilla WIMP-like thermal relic with a mass of ${\cal O}$(100 GeV), but it still escapes direct detection. This happens, if the dark matter particle is a Goldstone boson whose scattering with ordinary matter is suppressed at low energy due to momentum-dependent interactions. We outline general features of this type of models and analyse a simple realization of these dynamics as a concrete example. In particular, we show that although direct detection of this type of dark matter candidate is very challenging, the indirect detecti…
We present a new module of micrOMEGAs devoted to the computation of indirect signals from dark matter annihilation in any new model with a stable weakly interacting particle. The code provides the mass spectrum, cross-sections, relic density and exotic fluxes of gamma rays, positrons and antiprotons. The propagation of charged particles in the Galactic halo is handled with a new module that allows to easily modify the propagation parameters.
Several constructions, of stringy origins or not, generate abelian gauge extensions of the Standard Model (SM). Even if the particles of the SM are not charged under this extra $U'(1)$, one cannot avoid the presence of a kinetic mixing between $U'(1)$ and the hypercharge $U_Y(1)$. In this work, we constraint drastically this kinetic mixing, taking into account the recent experimental data from accelerator physics, direct detection and indirect detection of dark matter. We show that the region respecting WMAP and experimental constraints is now very narrowed along the pole line where $M_{Z_D}\s…
We investigate the prospects of indirect and direct dark matter searches within the minimal supersymmetric standard model with nine parameters (MSSM-9). These nine parameters include three gaugino masses, Higgs, slepton and squark masses, all treated independently. We perform a Bayesian Monte Carlo scan of the parameter space taking into consideration all available particle physics constraints such as the Higgs mass of 126 GeV, upper limits on the scattering cross-section from direct-detection experiments, and assuming that the MSSM-9 provides all the dark matter abundance through thermal free…
We examine the detectability through indirect means of weakly interacting dark matter candidates that may constitute not all but only a subdominant component of galactic cold dark matter. We show that the possibility of indirect detection of neutralinos from their annihilations in the Earth and Sun is not severely hampered by decreasing neutralino relic density. Upward-going muon fluxes in underground detectors from neutralino annihilations in the Sun can remain above the threshold of detectability of 10 muons/km^2/yr for neutralinos composing 1% or more of the halo dark matter. Similarly, sig…
The nature of cosmological dark matter finds its explanation in physics beyond the Standard model of elementary particles. The landscape of dark matter candidates contains a wide variety of species, either elusive or hardly detectable in direct experimental searches. Even in case, when such searches are possible the interpretation of their results implies additional sources of information, which provide indirect effects of dark matter. Some nontrivial probes for the nature of the dark matter are presented in the present issue.
Principle of neutralino dark matter detection with neutrino telescopes and predictions are reviewed. The future Antares detector is described. Prospection in the CMSSM is exposed including comparison with experiment sensitivities of both neutrino indirect detection and direct detection experiments. Results in other frameworks are shortly surveyed. Models with a non negligible neutralino higgsino fraction are promising for neutrino telescopes detection.
The scenario of isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM) with destructive interference between DM-proton and DM-neutron scatterings provides a potential possibility to reconcile the experimental results of DAMA, CoGeNT and XENON. We explore the constraints on the IVDM from other direct detection experiments such as CRESST and SIMPLE, etc. and from the indirect DM searches such as the antiproton flux measured by BESS-Polar II. The results show that the relevant couplings in IVDM scenario are severely constrained.
Multiple space-borne cosmic ray detectors have detected line-like features in the electron and positron spectra. Most recently, the DAMPE collaboration reported the existence of such a feature at 1.4 TeV, sparking interest in a potential dark matter origin. Such quasi-monochromatic features, virtually free of any astrophysical background, could be explained by the annihilation of dark matter particles in a nearby dark matter clump. Here, we explore the consistency of producing such spectral features with dark matter annihilation from the standpoint of dark matter substructure statistics, const…
With several proposed MeV gamma-ray telescopes on the horizon, it is of paramount importance to perform accurate calculations of gamma-ray spectra expected from sub-GeV dark matter annihilation and decay. We present hazma, a python package for reliably computing these spectra, determining the resulting constraints from existing gamma-ray data, and prospects for upcoming telescopes. For high-level analyses, hazma comes with several built-in dark matter models where the interactions between dark matter and hadrons have been determined in detail using chiral perturbation theory. Additionally, haz…
