Gamma Ray Burst (GRBs) are empirically classified as long-duration GRBs (LGRBs, $>$ 2s) and short-duration GRBs (SGRBs, $<$ 2s). Physically they can be grouped into two distinct progenitor categories: those originating from collapse of massive stars (also known as Type II) and those related to mergers of compact stars (also known as Type I). Even though most LGRBs are Type II and most SGRBs are Type I, the duration criterion is not always reliable to determine the physical category of a certain GRB. Based on our previous comprehensive study of the multi-wavelength properties of long and short GRBs, here we utilize the Naive Bayes method to physically classify GRBs as Type I and Type II GRBs based on multi-wavelength criteria. It results in 0.5\% training error rate and 1\% test error rate. Moreover, there is a gap [-1.2, -0.16] in the distribution of the posterior Odds, $\log O({\rm II:I})$, the Type II to Type I probability ratio. Therefore, we propose to use ${\cal O} = \log O({\rm II:I})+0.7$ as the parameter to classify GRBs into Type I ($<0$) or Type II ($>0$). The only confirmed Type I GRB, GRB 170817A, has log $O({\rm II:I})=-10$. According to this criterion, the supernova-less long GRBs 060614 and 060505 belong to Type I, and two controversial short GRBs 090426 and 060121 belong to Type II.
Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are classified into long and short categories based on their durations. Broad band studies suggest that these two categories of objects roughly correspond to two different classes of progenitor systems, i.e. compact star mergers (Type I) vs. massive star core collapse (Type II). However, the duration criterion sometimes leads to mis-identification of the progenitor systems. We perform a comprehensive multi-wavelength comparative study between duration-defined long GRBs and short GRBs as well as the so-called "consensus" long GRBs and short GRBs (which are believed to be…
Using a wavelet decomposition technique, we have extracted the Hurst exponent for a sample of 46 long and 22 short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) aboard the Fermi satellite. This exponent is a scaling parameter that provides a measure of long-range behavior in a time series. The mean Hurst exponent for the short GRBs is significantly smaller than that for the long GRBs. The separation may serve as an unbiased criterion for distinguishing short and long GRBs.
In this work, we restudy the dependence of luminosity function and event rates for different gamma-ray burst samples on the criteria of sample selection and threshold effect. To compare with many previous studies, we have chosen two samples including 88 and 118 long bursts with known redshift and peak flux over 2.6 ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, from which 79 bursts are picked out to constitute our complete sample. It is found that the evolution of luminosity with redshift can be expressed by $L\propto(1+z)^k$ with a diverse $k$ relied more on the sample selection. Interestingly, the cumulative distri…

Two classes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), short and long, have been determined without any doubts, and are usually ascribed to different progenitors, yet these classes overlap for a variety of descriptive parameters. A subsample of 46 long and 22 short $Fermi$ GRBs with estimated Hurst Exponents (HEs), complemented by minimum variability time-scales (MVTS) and durations ($T_{90}$) is used to perform a supervised Machine Learning (ML) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. It is found that while $T_{90}$ itself performs very well in distinguishing short an…
We present a mechanism based on internal self-annihilation of dark matter accreted from the galactic halo in the inner regions of neutron stars that may trigger the full or partial conversion into a quark star. We explain how this effect may induce a gamma ray burst that could be classified as short, according to the usual definition based on time duration of the prompt gamma-ray emission. This mechanism differs in many aspects from the most discussed scenario associating short gamma-ray bursts with compact object binary mergers. We list possible observational signatures that should help to di…

We present the second Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) catalog of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which contains 476 bursts detected by the BAT between 2004 December 19 and 2009 December 21. This catalog (hereafter the BAT2 catalog) presents burst trigger time, location, 90% error radius, duration, fluence, peak flux, time-averaged spectral parameters and time-resolved spectral parameters measured by the BAT. In the correlation study of various observed parameters extracted from the BAT prompt emission data, we distinguish among long-duration GRBs (L-GRBs), short-duration GRBs (S-GRBs), and short-du…
GRB 120422A is a low-luminosity Gamma-ray burst (GRB) associated with a bright supernova, which distinguishes itself by its relatively short T90 ~ 5 s and an energetic X-ray tail. We analyze the Swift BAT and XRT data and discuss the physical implications. We show that the early steep decline in the X-ray light curve can be interpreted as the curvature tail of a late emission episode around 58-86 s, with a curved instantaneous spectrum at the end of the emission episode. Together with the main activity in the first ~ 20 s and the weak emission from 40 s to 60 s, the prompt emission is variable…
Relativistic jets are universal in long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) models. Before breaking out, they must propagate in the progenitor envelope along with a forward shock and a reverse shock forming at the jet head. Both electrons and protons will be accelerated by the shocks. High energy neutrinos could be produced by these protons interacting with stellar materials and electron-radiating photons. The jet will probably be collimated, which may have a strong effect on the final neutrino flux. Under the assumption of a power-law stellar-envelope density profile $ρ\propto r^{-α}$ with an inde…

I have used a sample of long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) common to both \emph{Swift} and \emph{Fermi} to re-derive the parameters of the Yonetoku correlation. This allowed me to self-consistently estimate pseudo redshifts of all the bursts with unknown redshifts. This is the first time such a large sample of GRBs from these two instruments are used, both individually and in conjunction, to model the long GRB luminosity function. The GRB formation rate is modelled as the product of the cosmic star formation rate and a GRB formation efficiency for a given stellar mass. An exponential cut-off powerla…
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to belong to two classes and they are conventionally divided according to their durations. This classification scheme is not satisfied due to the fact that duration distributions of the two classes are heavily overlapped. We collect a new sample (153 sources) of GRBs and investigate the distribution of the logarithmic deviation of the $E_p$ value from the Amati relation. The distribution possesses an obvious bimodality structure and it can be accounted for by the combination of two Gaussian curves. Based on this analysis, we propose to statistically classif…
Recent arcsecond localizations of Fast Radio Bursts and identifications of their host galaxies confirmed their extragalactic origin. While FRB 121102 resides in the bright region of a dwarf star forming galaxy, other FRBs reside in more massive galaxies and are related to older stellar populations. We compare the host galaxy properties of {nine} FRBs with those of several types of stellar transients: from young to old population, long duration gamma ray bursts (LGRBs), superluminous supernovae (SLSNe), Type Ib/Ic supernovae (SN Ibc), Type II supernovae (SN II), type Ia supernovae (SN Ia), and s…

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are widely believed to be from massive collapsars and/or compact binary mergers, which accordingly, would generate long and short GRBs, respectively. The details on this classification scheme have been in constant debate given more and more observational data available to us. In this work, we apply a series of data mining methods to studying the potential classification information contained in the prompt emission of GRBs detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. A tight global correlation is found between fluence ($f$), peak flux ($F$) and prompt duration ($T_{90}…
Broad-lined type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic-BL) are peculiar stellar explosions that distinguish themselves from ordinary SNe. Some SNe Ic-BL are associated with long-duration (\gtrsim 2 s) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Black holes and magnetars are two types of compact objects that are hypothesized to be central engines of GRBs. In spite of decades of investigations, no direct evidence for the formation of black holes or magnetars has been found for GRBs so far. Here we report the finding that the early peak (t \lesssim 50 days) and late-time (t \gtrsim 300 days) slow decay displayed in the light curve…

GRB 100418A is a long burst at z=0.624 without detection of any associated supernova (SN). Its lightcurves in both the prompt and afterglow phases are similar to GRB 060614, a nearby long GRB without an associated SN. We analyze the observational data of this event and discuss the possible origins of its multi-wavelength emission. We show that its joint lightcurve at 1 keV derived from Swift BAT and XRT observations is composed of two distinguished components. The first component, whose spectrum is extremely soft (Γ= 4.32), ends with a steep decay segment, indicating the internal origin of thi…
We present a comprehensive comparison of the properties of the radio through X-ray counterpart of GW170817 and the properties of short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). For this effort, we utilize a sample of 36 short GRBs spanning a redshift range of $z \approx 0.12-2.6$ discovered over 2004-2017. We find that the counterpart to GW170817 has an isotropic-equivalent luminosity that is $\approx 3000$ times less than the median value of on-axis short GRB X-ray afterglows, and $\gtrsim10^{4}$ times less than that for detected short GRB radio afterglows. Moreover, the allowed jet energies and part…
The hidden population of long gamma-ray bursts from compact object mergers

The precise origin of short gamma ray bursts (SGRBs) remains an important open question in relativistic astrophysics. Increasingly, observational evidence suggests the merger of a binary compact object system as the source for most SGRBs, but it is currently unclear how to distinguish observationally between a binary neutron star progenitor and a black hole-neutron star progenitor. We suggest the quasi-periodic signal of jet precession as an observational signature of SGRBs originating in mixed binary systems, and quantify both the fraction of mixed binaries capable of producing SGRBs, and the…
Recent detections of GeV photons in a few GRBs by Fermi-LAT imply huge bulk Lorentz factors to avoid a large gamma gamma optical depth at high energy. Estimates can be as high as Gamma ~ 1000 in the most extreme cases. This puts severe constraints on models of the central engine and the jet acceleration in GRBs. These estimates are however obtained from a simplified single zone model. We present here a more realistic calculation which takes into account the time, space and direction dependent photon field existing in an outflow with several relativistically moving emitting zones. The formalism…
The joint detection of gravitational waves (GWs) and $γ$-rays from a binary neutron-star (NS) merger provided a unique view of off-axis GRBs and an independent measurement of the NS merger rate. Comparing the observations of GRB170817 with those of the regular population of short GRBs (sGRBs), we show that an order unity fraction of NS mergers result in sGRB jets that breakout of the surrounding ejecta. We argue that the luminosity function of sGRBs, peaking at $\approx 2\times 10^{52}\, \mbox{erg s}^{-1}$, is likely an intrinsic property of the sGRB central engine and that sGRB jets are typic…
X-ray Binaries (XRBs) consist of a compact object that accretes material from an orbiting secondary star. The most secure method we have for determining if the compact object is a black hole is to determine its mass: this is limited to bright objects, and requires substantial time-intensive spectroscopic monitoring. With new X-ray sources being discovered with different X-ray observatories, developing efficient, robust means to classify compact objects becomes increasingly important. We compare three machine learning classification methods (Bayesian Gaussian Processes (BGP), K-Nearest Neighbor…
Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are characterized by ultra-relativistic outflows, while supernovae are generally characterized by non-relativistic ejecta. GRB afterglows decelerate rapidly usually within days, because their low-mass ejecta rapidly sweep up a comparatively larger mass of circumstellar material. However supernovae, with heavy ejecta, can be in nearly free expansion for centuries. Supernovae were thought to have non-relativistic outflows except for few relativistic ones accompanied by GRBs. This clear division was blurred by SN 2009bb, the first supernova with a relativistic outflow with…
Ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), if accelerated in the gamma-ray burst (GRB) blastwave, are expected to produce PeV-EeV neutrinos by interacting with long-lived GRB afterglow photons. Detailed spectral and temporal properties of the flux of these neutrinos depend on the GRB blastwave evolution scenario, but can last for days to years time scale in contrast to the seconds to minutes time scale for "burst" neutrino flux contemporaneous with the prompt gamma-ray emission and which has been constrained by IceCube in the $\sim$ 50 TeV-2 PeV range. We compute expected neutrino events in IceCub…
It is now generally accepted that long-duration gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are due to the collapse of massive rotating stars. The precise collapse process itself, however, is not yet fully understood. Strong winds, outbursts, and intense ionizing UV radiation from single stars or strongly interacting binaries are expected to destroy the molecular cloud cores that give birth to them and create highly complex circumburst environments for the explosion. Such environments might imprint features on GRB light curves that uniquely identify the nature of the progenitor and its collapse. We have performed…
We present a comparative study of the galactic and small scale environments of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and core collapse supernovae (CCSN). We use a sample of 34 GRB hosts at z<1.2, and a comparison sample of 58 supernova hosts located within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey footprint. We fit template spectra to the available photometric data, which span the range 0.45-24 micron, and extract absolute magnitudes, stellar masses and star formation rates from the resulting fits. Our results broadly corroborate previous findings, but offer significant enhancements in spectral coverage an…
The recent detection of TeV photons from two gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), GRB 190114C and GRB 180720B, has opened a new window for multi-messenger and multi-wavelength astrophysics of high-energy transients. We study the origin of very-high-energy (VHE) $γ$-rays from the short GRB 160821B, for which the MAGIC Collaboration reported a $\sim 3 σ$ statistical significance. Short GRBs are often accompanied by extended and plateau emission, which is attributed to internal dissipation resulting from activities of a long-lasting central engine, and Murase et al. (2018) recently suggested the external inv…
Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are powerful tracers of star-forming galaxies. We have defined a homogeneous subsample of 69 Swift GRB-selected galaxies spanning a very wide redshift range. Special attention has been devoted to making the sample optically unbiased through simple and well-defined selection criteria based on the high-energy properties of the bursts and their positions on the sky. Thanks to our extensive follow-up observations, this sample has now achieved a comparatively high degree of redshift completeness, and thus provides a legacy sample, useful for statistical studies…
We present a carefully selected sub-sample of Swift Long Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs), that is complete in redshift. The sample is constructed by considering only bursts with favorable observing conditions for ground-based follow-up searches, that are bright in the 15-150 keV Swift/BAT band, i.e. with 1-s peak photon fluxes in excess to 2.6 ph s^-1 cm^-2. The sample is composed by 58 bursts, 52 of them with redshift for a completeness level of 90%, while another two have a redshift constraint, reaching a completeness level of 95%. For only three bursts we have no constraint on the redshift. The hig…
(Shortened) GRB080319B, with an isotropic energy E_{iso}=1.32x10^{54}erg, and GRB050904, with E_{iso}=1.04x10^{54}erg, offer the possibility of studying the spectral properties of the prompt radiation of two of the most energetic Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). This allows us to probe the validity of the fireshell model for GRBs beyond 10^{54}erg, well outside the energy range where it has been successfully tested up to now (10^{49}-10^{53}erg). We find that in the low energy region, the prompt emission spectra observed by Swift BAT reveals more power than theoretically predicted. The opportunities o…
