We construct a large class of gauge theories with extended supersymmetry on four-dimensional manifolds with a Killing vector field and isolated fixed points. We extend previous results limited to super Yang-Mills theory to general $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories including hypermultiplets. We present a general framework encompassing equivariant Donaldson-Witten theory and Pestun's theory on $S^4$ as two particular cases. This is achieved by expressing fields in cohomological variables, whose features are dictated by supersymmetry and require a generalized notion of self-duality for two-forms and of chirality for spinors. Finally, we implement localization techniques to compute the exact partition function of the cohomological theories we built up and write the explicit result for manifolds with diverse topologies.
We generalize the framework introduced by Kapustin et al. for doing path integral localization in Chern-Simons theory to work on any Seifert manifold. This is done by topologically twisting the supersymmetric theory considered by Kapustin et al., after which the theory takes a cohomological form. We also consider Wilson loops which wrap the fiber directions and compute their expectation values. We discuss the relation with other approaches to exact path integral calculations in Chern-Simons theory.
We provide a proof for the conjectured equality of the generating function of integrated Higgs and Coulomb branch topological operators in 3d $\mathcal{N}\ge 4$ gauge theories and the three sphere partition function deformed by mass or FI parameters. The equality is the result of cohomological equivalence and applies to all theories in this class, including ABJM and other generalized Gaiotto-Witten models, and those without an explicit supersymmetric Lagrangian.
Given a quiver with potential associated to a toric Calabi-Yau threefold, the numerical Donaldson-Thomas invariants for the moduli space of framed representations can be computed by using toric localization, which reduces the problem to the enumeration of molten crystals. We provide a refinement of this localization procedure, which allows to compute motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants. Using this approach, we prove a universal formula which gives the BPS invariants of any toric quiver, up to undetermined contributions which are invariant under Poincaré duality. When the toric Calabi-Yau three…
We revisit the duality between five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from a new perspective. We give a unified treatment of supersymmetric gauge theories in three and five dimensions using cohomological localization techniques and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We survey various known results in a unified framework and provide simplified derivations of localization formulas, as well as various extensions including the case of irregular Seifert fibrations. We describe the reductions to four-dimensional gauge theories, and give an …
In $\mathcal N \geq 2$ superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories we construct the infinite family of Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Wilson loops featured by constant parametric couplings to scalar and fermion matter, including both line Wilson loops in Minkowski spacetime and circle Wilson loops in Euclidean space. We find that the connection of the most general BPS Wilson loop cannot be decomposed in terms of double-node connections. Moreover, if the quiver contains triangles, it cannot be interpreted as a supermatrix inside a superalgebra. However, for particular choices of the param…
We apply the method of Higgs branch localization to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric partition function on $S^3\times S^1.$ As a result, we show that it can be written as the product of an elliptic vortex and anti-vortex partition function summed over a finite number of Higgs vacua.
In this article, we study the localizaiton of the partition function of BPS vortices in $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ $U(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory with $N$-flavor on $\R^2$. The vortex partition function for $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ super Yang-Mills theory is obtained from the one in $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ super Yang-Mills theory by mass deformation. We show that the partition function can be written as $Q$-exact form and integration in the partition functions is localized to the fixed points which are related to $N$-tuple one dimensional partitions of positive integers.
We study three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons-Matter theories on the direct product of a circle and a two dimensional hemisphere ($S^1 \times D^2$) with specified boundary conditions by the method of localization. We construct boundary interactions to cancel the supersymmetric variation of the three dimensional superpotential term and the Chern-Simons term and show inflows of the bulk-boundary anomalies. It finds that the boundary conditions induce two dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ type supersymmetry on the boundary torus. We also study the relation between the 3d-2d…
We study 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theories obtained with an orbifold projection from $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, and compute the 2- and 3-point correlation functions among chiral/anti-chiral single-trace scalar operators and the corresponding structure constants. Exploiting localization, we map the computation to an interacting matrix model and obtain expressions for the correlators and the structure constants that are valid for any value of the 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit of the theory. At strong coupling, these expressions simplify and allow us to extract …
We derive non-Abelian localization formulae for supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory with matters on a Seifert manifold M, which is the three-dimensional space of a circle bundle over a two-dimensional Riemann surface Σ, by using the cohomological approach introduced by Kallen. We find that the partition function and the vev of the supersymmetric Wilson loop reduces to a finite dimensional integral and summation over classical flux configurations labeled by discrete integers. We also find the partition function reduces further to just a discrete sum over integers in some cases, and ev…
We compute the supersymmetric partition function of an $\mathcal{N}=1$ chiral multiplet coupled to an external Abelian gauge field on complex manifolds with $T^2 \times S^2$ topology. The result is locally holomorphic in the complex structure moduli of $T^2\times S^2$. This computation illustrates in a simple example some recently obtained constraints on the parameter dependence of supersymmetric partition functions. We also devise a simple method to compute the chiral multiplet partition function on any four-manifold $\mathcal{M}_4$ preserving two supercharges of opposite chiralities, via sup…
A new symmetry of $(1,0)$ supersymmetric non-linear $σ$-models in two dimensions with Fermi and mass sectors is introduced. It is a generalisation of the so-called special holonomy $W$-symmetry of Howe and Papadopoulos associated with structure group reductions of the target space $\mathcal{M}$. Our symmetry allows in particular non-trivial flux and instanton-like connections on vector bundles over $\mathcal{M}$. We also investigate potential anomalies and show that cohomologically non-trivial terms in the quantum effective action are invariant under a corrected version of our symmetry. Consis…
We study two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) using supersymmetric localization. We consider $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ theories with an $R$-symmetry, which can always be defined on curved space by a pseudo-topological twist while preserving one of the two supercharges of flat space. For GLSMs which are deformations of $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,2)$ GLSMs and retain a Coulomb branch, we consider the $A/2$-twist and compute the genus-zero correlation functions of certain pseudo-chiral operators, which generalize the simplest twisted chiral ring operators awa…
We compute a set of correlation functions of operator insertions on the 1/8 BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM by employing supersymmetric localization, OPE and the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. These correlators exhibit a simple determinant structure, are position-independent and form a topological subsector, but depend nontrivially on the 't Hooft coupling and the rank of the gauge group. When applied to the 1/2 BPS circular (or straight) Wilson loop, our results provide an infinite family of exact defect CFT data, including the structure constants of protected defect primaries of arbi…
We study the relation between Donaldson-Thomas theory of Calabi-Yau threefolds and a six-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theory. Our main example is the topological U(N) gauge theory on flat space in its Coulomb branch. To evaluate its partition function we use equivariant localization techniques on its noncommutative deformation. As a result the gauge theory localizes on noncommutative instantons which can be classified in terms of N-coloured three-dimensional Young diagrams. We give to these noncommutative instantons a geometrical description in terms of certain stable framed coherent she…
This is the 5th article in the collection of reviews "Exact results on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. We review the supersymmetric localization of $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories on curved backgrounds in four dimensions using $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity and generalised conformal Killing spinors. We review some known backgrounds and give examples of new geometries such as local $T^2$-bundle fibrations. We discuss in detail a topological four-sphere with generic $T^2$-invariant metric.
Donaldson-Thomas theory on a Calabi-Yau can be described in terms of a certain six-dimensional cohomological gauge theory. We introduce a certain class of defects in this gauge theory which generalize surface defects in four dimensions. These defects are associated with divisors and are defined by prescribing certain boundary conditions for the gauge fields. We discuss generalized instanton moduli spaces when the theory is defined with a defect and propose a generalization of Donaldson-Thomas invariants. These invariants arise by studying torsion free coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau varieties w…
We prove combinatorially the explicit relation between genus filtrated $s$-loop means of the Gaussian matrix model and terms of the genus expansion of the Kontsevich--Penner matrix model (KPMM). The latter is the generating function for volumes of discretized (open) moduli spaces $M_{g,s}^{\mathrm{disc}}$ given by $N_{g,s}(P_1,\dots,P_s)$ for $(P_1,\dots,P_s)\in{\mathbb Z}_+^s$. This generating function therefore enjoys the topological recursion, and we prove that it is simultaneously the generating function for ancestor invariants of a cohomological field theory thus enjoying the Givental dec…
We use the explicit relation between genus filtrated $s$-loop means of the Gaussian matrix model and terms of the genus expansion of the Kontsevich--Penner matrix model (KPMM), which is the generating function for volumes of discretized (open) moduli spaces $M_{g,s}^{disc}$ (discrete volumes), to express Gaussian means in all genera as polynomials in special times weighted by ancestor invariants of an underlying cohomological field theory. We translate topological recursion of the Gaussian model into recurrent relations for coefficients of this expansion proving their integrality and positivit…
We give a pedagogical review of the localization of supersymmetric gauge theory on 5d toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. We construct the cohomological complex resulting from supersymmetry and consider its natural toric deformations with all equivariant parameters turned on. We also give detailed discussion on how the Sasaki-Einstein geometry permeates every aspect of the calculation, from Killing spinor, vanishing theorems to the index theorems.
We consider 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories with R-symmetry on a hemisphere times a torus. We apply localization techniques to evaluate the exact partition function through a cohomological reformulation of the supersymmetry transformations. Our results represent the natural elliptic lifts of the lower dimensional analogs as well as a field theoretic derivation of the conjectured 4d holomorphic blocks, from which partition functions of compact spaces with diverse topology can be recovered through gluing. We also analyze the different boundary conditions which can naturally be imposed on the c…
In this note we present a formula for the equivariant index of the cohomological complex obtained from localization of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM on simply-connected compact four-manifolds with a $T^2$-action. Knowledge of said index is essential to compute the perturbative part of the partition function for the theory. In the topologically twisted case, the complex is elliptic and its index can be computed in a standard way using the Atiyah-Bott localization formula. Recently, a framework for more general types of twisting, so-called cohomological twisting, was introduced for which the complex turns…
We introduce a novel harmonic superspace for $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal field theories that is tailor made for the study of correlation functions of BPS operators. We calculate a host of two- and three-point functions in full generality and put strong constraints on the form of four-point functions of some selected BPS multiplets. For the four-point function of $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS operators we obtain the associated Ward identities by imposing the absence of harmonic singularities. The latter imply the existence of a solvable subsector in which the correlator becomes topological. This me…
We study the extremal correlation functions of (twisted) chiral ring operators via superlocalization in $\mathcal{N}=(2, 2)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with central charge $c\geq 3$, especially for SCFTs with Calabi-Yau geometric phases. We extend the method in arXiv:1602.05971 with mild modifications, so that it is applicable to disentangle operators mixing on $S^2$ in nilpotent (twisted) chiral rings of $2d$ SCFTs. With the extended algorithm and technique of localization, we compute exactly the extremal correlators in $2d$ $\mathcal{N}=(2, 2)$ (twisted) chiral rings as non-holomo…
We review localization techniques for functional integrals which have recently been used to perform calculations in and gain insight into the structure of certain topological field theories and low-dimensional gauge theories. These are the functional integral counterparts of the Mathai-Quillen formalism, the Duistermaat-Heckman theorem, and the Weyl integral formula respectively. In each case, we first introduce the necessary mathematical background (Euler classes of vector bundles, equivariant cohomology, topology of Lie groups), and describe the finite dimensional integration formulae. We th…
