We study the local persistence probability during non-stationary time evolutions in disordered contact processes with long-range interactions by a combination of the strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG) method, a phenomenological theory of rare regions, and numerical simulations. We find that, for interactions decaying as an inverse power of the distance, the persistence probability tends to a non-zero limit not only in the inactive phase but also in the critical point. Thus, unlike in the contact process with short-range interactions, the persistence in the limit $t\to\infty$ is a discontinuous function of the control parameter. For stretched exponentially decaying interactions, the limiting value of the persistence is found to remain continuous, similar to the model with short-range interactions.
We study the time-dependence of the local persistence probability during a non-stationary time evolution in the disordered contact process in $d=1,2$, and $3$ dimensions. We present a method for calculating the persistence with the strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG) technique, which we then apply in the critical point analytically for $d=1$ and numerically for $d=2,3$. According to the results, the average persistence decays at late times as an inverse power of the logarithm of time, with a universal, dimension-dependent generalized exponent. For $d=1$, the distribution of sample-dep…
We study the first passage time properties of an integrated Brownian curve both in homogeneous and disordered environments. In a disordered medium we relate the scaling properties of this center of mass persistence of a random walker to the average persistence, the latter being the probability P_pr(t) that the expectation value <x(t)> of the walker's position after time t has not returned to the initial value. The average persistence is then connected to the statistics of extreme events of homogeneous random walks which can be computed exactly for moderate system sizes. As a result we obtain a…
A ``persistence'' exponent theta has been extensively used to describe the nonequilibrium dynamics of spin systems following a deep quench: for zero-temperature homogeneous Ising models on the d-dimensional cubic lattice, the fraction p(t) of spins not flipped by time t decays to zero like t^[-theta(d)] for low d; for high d, p(t) may decay to p(infinity)>0, because of ``blocking'' (but perhaps still like a power). What are the effects of disorder or changes of lattice? We show that these can quite generally lead to blocking (and convergence to a metastable configuration) even for low d, and t…
The Glauber dynamics of the pure and weakly disordered random-bond 2d Ising model is studied at zero-temperature. A single characteristic length scale, $L(t)$, is extracted from the equal time correlation function. In the pure case, the persistence probability decreases algebraically with the coarsening length scale. In the disordered case, three distinct regimes are identified: a short time regime where the behaviour is pure-like; an intermediate regime where the persistence probability decays non-algebraically with time; and a long time regime where the domains freeze and there is a cessatio…
We explore the emergence of nonequilibrium collective motion in disordered non-thermal active matter when persistent motion and crowding effects compete, using simulations of a two-dimensional model of size polydisperse self-propelled particles. In stark contrast with monodisperse systems, we find that polydispersity stabilizes a homogeneous active liquid at arbitrary large persistence times, characterized by remarkable velocity correlations and irregular turbulent flows. For all persistence values, the active fluid undergoes a nonequilibrium glass transition at large density. This is accompan…
Slow dynamics in disordered materials prohibits direct simulation of their rich nonequilibrium behavior at large scales. "Patchwork dynamics" is introduced to mimic relaxation over a very broad range of time scales by equilibrating or optimizing directly on successive length scales. This dynamics is used to study coarsening and to replicate memory effects for spin glasses and random ferromagnets. It is also used to find, with high confidence, exact ground states in large or toroidal samples.
The persistence exponent θfor the global order parameter, M(t), of a system quenched from the disordered phase to its critical point describes the probability, p(t) \sim t^{-θ}, that M(t) does not change sign in the time interval t following the quench. We calculate θto O(ε^2) for model A of critical dynamics (and to order εfor model C) and show that at this order M(t) is a non-Markov process. Consequently, θis a new exponent. The calculation is performed by expanding around a Markov process, using a simplified version of the perturbation theory recently introduced by Majumdar and Sire [Phys. …

The persistence probability P_g(t) of the global order-parameter of a simple ferromagnet undergoing phase-ordering kinetics after a quench from a fully disordered state to below the critical temperature, T<T_c, is analysed. It is argued that the persistence probability decays algebraically with time in the entire low-temperature phase. For Markov processes, the associated global persistence exponent theta_g = (2 lambda_C -d)/(2z) is related to the autocorrelation exponent lambda_C. This relationship is confirmed for phase-ordering in the exactly solved 1D Ising model and the d-dimensional sphe…
We investigate the dynamics of a three-state stochastic lattice gas, consisting of holes and two oppositely "charged" species of particles, under the influence of an "electric" field, at zero total charge. Interacting only through an excluded volume constraint, particles can hop to nearest neighbour empty sites. With increasing density and drive, the system orders into a charge-segregated state. Using a combination of Langevin equations and Monte Carlo simulations, we study the steady-state structure factors in the disordered phase where homogeneous configurations are stable against small harm…
We investigate the persistence properties of critical d-dimensional systems relaxing from an initial state with non-vanishing order parameter (e.g., the magnetization in the Ising model), focusing on the dynamics of the global order parameter of a d'-dimensional manifold. The persistence probability P(t) shows three distinct long-time decays depending on the value of the parameter ζ= (D-2+η)/z which also controls the relaxation of the persistence probability in the case of a disordered initial state (vanishing order parameter) as a function of the codimension D = d-d' and of the critical expon…

We present the universal features of the hitting probability $Q(x,L)$, the probability that a generic stochastic process starting at $x$ and evolving in a box $[0,L]$ hits the upper boundary $L$ before hitting the lower boundary at 0. For a generic self-affine process (describing, for instance, the polymer translocation through a nanopore) we show that $Q(x,L)=Q(x/L)$ and the scaling function $Q(z)\sim z^ϕ$ as $z\to 0$ with $ϕ=θ/H$ where $H$ and $θ$ are respectively the Hurst exponent and the persistence exponent of the process. This result is verified in several exact calculations including w…
