In this paper, we propose a monocular visual localization pipeline leveraging semantic and depth cues. We apply semantic consistency evaluation to rank the image retrieval results and a practical clustering technique to reject estimation outliers. In addition, we demonstrate a substantial performance boost achieved with a combination of multiple feature extractors. Furthermore, by using depth prediction with a deep neural network, we show that a significant amount of falsely matched keypoints are identified and eliminated. The proposed pipeline outperforms most of the existing approaches at the Long-Term Visual Localization benchmark 2020.
Long-term visual localization is the problem of estimating the camera pose of a given query image in a scene whose appearance changes over time. It is an important problem in practice, for example, encountered in autonomous driving. In order to gain robustness to such changes, long-term localization approaches often use segmantic segmentations as an invariant scene representation, as the semantic meaning of each scene part should not be affected by seasonal and other changes. However, these representations are typically not very discriminative due to the limited number of available classes. In…

This paper proposes an efficient iris localization method without using iris segmentation and circle fitting. Conventional iris localization methods first extract iris regions by using semantic segmentation methods such as U-Net. Afterward, the inner and outer iris circles are localized using the traditional circle fitting algorithm. However, this approach requires high-resolution encoder-decoder networks for iris segmentation, so it causes computational costs to be high. In addition, traditional circle fitting tends to be sensitive to noise in input images and fitting parameters, causing the …
In this work we study the mutual benefits of two common computer vision tasks, self-supervised depth estimation and semantic segmentation from images. For example, to help unsupervised monocular depth estimation, constraints from semantic segmentation has been explored implicitly such as sharing and transforming features. In contrast, we propose to explicitly measure the border consistency between segmentation and depth and minimize it in a greedy manner by iteratively supervising the network towards a locally optimal solution. Partially this is motivated by our observation that semantic segme…
Coarse-to-fine models and cascade segmentation architectures are widely adopted to solve the problem of large scale variations in medical image segmentation. However, those methods have two primary limitations: the first-stage segmentation becomes a performance bottleneck; the lack of overall differentiability makes the training process of two stages asynchronous and inconsistent. In this paper, we propose a differentiable two-stage network architecture to tackle these problems. In the first stage, a localization network (L-Net) locates Regions of Interest (RoIs) in a detection fashion; in the…

Depth-aware video panoptic segmentation tackles the inverse projection problem of restoring panoptic 3D point clouds from video sequences, where the 3D points are augmented with semantic classes and temporally consistent instance identifiers. We propose a novel solution with a multi-task network that performs monocular depth estimation and video panoptic segmentation. Since acquiring ground truth labels for both depth and image segmentation has a relatively large cost, we leverage the power of unlabeled video sequences with self-supervised monocular depth estimation and semi-supervised learnin…

Augmenting RGB data with measured depth has been shown to improve the performance of a range of tasks in computer vision including object detection and semantic segmentation. Although depth sensors such as the Microsoft Kinect have facilitated easy acquisition of such depth information, the vast majority of images used in vision tasks do not contain depth information. In this paper, we show that augmenting RGB images with estimated depth can also improve the accuracy of both object detection and semantic segmentation. Specifically, we first exploit the recent success of depth estimation from m…
We present a learning approach for localization and segmentation of objects in an image in a manner that is robust to partial occlusion. Our algorithm produces a bounding box around the full extent of the object and labels pixels in the interior that belong to the object. Like existing segmentation aware detection approaches, we learn an appearance model of the object and consider regions that do not fit this model as potential occlusions. However, in addition to the established use of pairwise potentials for encouraging local consistency, we use higher order potentials which capture informati…

In this paper, we propose a new pre-training scheme for U-net based image segmentation. We first train the encoding arm as a localization network to predict the center of the target, before extending it into a U-net architecture for segmentation. We apply our proposed method to the problem of segmenting the optic disc from fundus photographs. Our work shows that the features learned by encoding arm can be transferred to the segmentation network to reduce the annotation burden. We propose that an approach could have broad utility for medical image segmentation, and alleviate the burden of delin…

In particular, we propose three key contributions: (1) We transfer knowledge from features learned during self-supervised depth estimation to semantic segmentation, (2) we implement a strong data augment…

This paper presents an efficient approach for solving jointly facade registration and semantic segmentation. Progress in facade detection and recognition enable good initialization for the registration of a reference facade to a newly acquired target image. We propose here to rely on semantic segmentation to improve the accuracy of that initial registration. Simultaneously we aim to improve the quality of the semantic segmentation through the registration. These two problems are jointly solved in a Expectation-Maximization framework. We especially introduce a bayesian model that use prior sema…
Semantic segmentation has achieved remarkable progress but remains challenging due to the complex scene, object occlusion, and so on. Some research works have attempted to use extra information such as a depth map to help RGB based semantic segmentation because the depth map could provide complementary geometric cues. However, due to the inaccessibility of depth sensors, depth information is usually unavailable for the test images. In this paper, we leverage only the depth of training images as the privileged information to mine the hard pixels in semantic segmentation, in which depth informat…

Weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) using image-level labels has recently attracted much attention for reducing annotation costs. Existing WSSS methods utilize localization maps from the classification network to generate pseudo segmentation labels. However, since localization maps obtained from the classifier focus only on sparse discriminative object regions, it is difficult to generate high-quality segmentation labels. To address this issue, we introduce discriminative region suppression (DRS) module that is a simple yet effective method to expand object activation regions. DRS s…
Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are limited by the lack of capability to handle geometric information due to the fixed grid kernel structure. The availability of depth data enables progress in RGB-D semantic segmentation with CNNs. State-of-the-art methods either use depth as additional images or process spatial information in 3D volumes or point clouds. These methods suffer from high computation and memory cost. To address these issues, we present Depth-aware CNN by introducing two intuitive, flexible and effective operations: depth-aware convolution and depth-aware average pooling. By le…

The Depth-aware Video Panoptic Segmentation (DVPS) is a new challenging vision problem that aims to predict panoptic segmentation and depth in a video simultaneously. The previous work solves this task by extending the existing panoptic segmentation method with an extra dense depth prediction and instance tracking head. Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) is an approach to minimizing domain gap. Generative methods are common approaches to minimizing the domain gap of aerial images which improves the performance of the downstream tasks, e.g., cross-domain semantic segmentation. For aerial images, the digital surface model (DSM) is usually available in both the source domain and the target domain. Depth information in DSM brings external information to generative models. However, little research utilizes it. In this paper, depth-assisted ResiDualGAN (DRDG) is proposed where depth supervised loss (DSL), and dep…
In this paper we tackle the problem of instance-level segmentation and depth ordering from a single monocular image. Towards this goal, we take advantage of convolutional neural nets and train them to directly predict instance-level segmentations where the instance ID encodes the depth ordering within image patches. A key challenge for RGB-D segmentation is how to effectively incorporate 3D geometric information from the depth channel into 2D appearance features. We propose to model the effective receptive field of 2D convolution based on the scale and locality from the 3D neighborhood. Standard convolutions are local in the image space ($u, v$), often with a fixed receptive field of 3x3 pixels. We propose to define convolutions local with respect to the corresponding point in the 3D real-world space ($x, y, z$), where the depth channel is used to adapt the receptive field of the convolution, which yields…
This paper studies semi-supervised learning of semantic segmentation, which assumes that only a small portion of training images are labeled and the others remain unlabeled. The unlabeled images are usually assigned pseudo labels to be used in training, which however often causes the risk of performance degradation due to the confirmation bias towards errors on the pseudo labels. We present a novel method that resolves this chronic issue of pseudo labeling. At the heart of our method lies error localization network (ELN), an auxiliary module that takes an image and its segmentation prediction …

In this paper, we propose a novel framework to incorporate the depth information in the RGB convolutional neural network (CNN), termed Z-ACN (Depth-Adapted CNN). This paper presents a unified framework for depth-aware panoptic segmentation (DPS), which aims to reconstruct 3D scene with instance-level semantics from one single image. Prior works address this problem by simply adding a dense depth regression head to panoptic segmentation (PS) networks, resulting in two independent task branches. This neglects the mutually-beneficial relations between these two tasks, thus failing to exploit handy instance-level semantic cues to boost depth accuracy while also producing sub-optimal depth maps.
