Second harmonic generation in nonlinear materials can be greatly enhanced by realizing doubly-resonant cavities with high quality factors. However, fulfilling such doubly resonant condition in photonic crystal (PhC) cavities is a long-standing challenge, because of the difficulty in engineering photonic bandgaps around both frequencies. Here, by implementing a second-harmonic bound state in the continuum (BIC) and confining it with a heterostructure design, we show the first doubly-resonant PhC slab cavity with $2.4\times10^{-2}$ W$^{-1}$ conversion efficiency under continuous wave excitation. We also report the confirmation of highly normal-direction concentrated far-field emission pattern with radial polarization at the second harmonic frequency. These results represent a solid verification of previous theoretical predictions and a cornerstone achievement, not only for nonlinear frequency conversion but also for vortex beam generation and prospective nonclassical sources of radiation.
We investigate second harmonic (SH) generation in a doubly resonant metamaterial. We show that SH generation can be enhanced when the resonant condition is satisfied for the SH frequency as well as for the fundamental frequency. A unit cell of the doubly resonant metamaterial consists of two coupled resonators, one of which resonates at the fundamental frequency, whereas the other resonates around the SH frequency. We observe that the SH generation in the doubly resonant metamaterial is 4.6 times as large as that in a singly resonant metamaterial.
How to utilize topological microcavities to control quantum emission is one of the ongoing research topics in the optical community. In this work, we investigate the emission of quantum emitters in doubly-resonant topological Tamm microcavity, which can simultaneously achieve dual resonances at two arbitrary wavelengths according to the needs of practical application. To achieve the enhancement of quantum emission in such cavities, we have exploited the tunable doubly-resonant modes, in which one of resonant modes corresponds to the pump laser wavelength and the other one is located at the emi…
We report a theoretical investigation of quadratic frequency combs in a dispersive second-harmonic generation cavity system. We identify different dynamical regimes and demonstrate that the same system can exhibit both bright and dark localized cavity solitons in the absence of a temporal walk-off.
We demonstrate a compact continuous-wave single-frequency doubly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (DRO) in a double-pass pump configuration with a control of the relative phase between the reflected waves. The nested DRO cavity allows single longitudinal mode operation together with low threshold and high efficiency. Thermal effects are managed by chopping the pump beam, allowing continuous tuning of the emitted wavelength. The infrared idler wave (3200-3800 nm) can be used for gas detection and the threshold pump power is compatible with diode pumping.
We theoretically study the generation of optical frequency combs and corresponding pulse trains in doubly resonant intracavity second-harmonic generation (SHG). We find that, despite the large temporal walk-off characteristic of realistic cavity systems, the nonlinear dynamics can be accurately and efficiently modelled using a pair of coupled mean-field equations. Through rigorous stability analysis of the system's steady-state continuous wave solutions, we demonstrate that walk-off can give rise to a new, previously unexplored regime of temporal modulation instability (MI). Numerical simulati…
We describea theoretical analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of third-harmonic generation ($ω\to3ω$) via Kerr ($\chithree$) nonlinearities in a resonant cavity with resonances at both $ω$ and $3ω$. Such a doubly resonant cavity greatly reduces the required power for efficient harmonic generation, by a factor of $\sim V/Q^2$ where $V$ is the modal volume and $Q$ is the lifetime, and can even exhibit 100% harmonic conversion efficiency at a critical input power. However, we show that it also exhibits a rich variety of nonlinear dynamics, such as multistable solutions and long-period limit cycles.…
Resonant second harmonic generation between 1550 nm and 775 nm with outside efficiency $> 4.4\times10^{-4}\, \text{mW}^{-1}$ is demonstrated in a gallium phosphide microdisk cavity supporting high-$Q$ modes at visible ($Q \sim 10^4$) and infrared ($Q \sim 10^5$) wavelengths. The double resonance condition was satisfied through intracavity photothermal temperature tuning using $\sim 360\,μ$W of 1550 nm light input to a fiber taper and resonantly coupled to the microdisk. Above this pump power efficiency was observed to decrease. The observed behavior is consistent with a simple model for therma…
We report on the design and experimental characterization of a suspended silicon nitride subwavelength grating possessing a polarization-independent guided-mode resonance at oblique incidence. At this resonant wavelength we observe that the transverse intensity profile of the transmitted beam is consistent with a first-order spatial differentiation of the incident beam profile in the direction of the grating periodicity, regardless of the incident light polarization. These observations are corroborated by full numerical simulations. The simple one-dimensional and symmetric design, combined wit…
We investigate existence and linear stability of coupled vortex solitons supported by cascaded four-wave mixing in a Raman active medium excited away from the resonance. We present a detailed analysis for the two- and three-component vortex solitons and demonstrate the formation of stable and unstable vortex solitons, and associated spatio-temporal helical beams, under the conditions of the simultaneous frequency and vortex comb generation.
In this letter we theoretically investigate the formation of localized temporal dissipative structures, and their corresponding frequency combs in doubly resonant dispersive optical parametric oscillators. We derive a nonlocal mean field model, and show that domain wall locking allows for the formation of stable coherent optical frequency combs.
We derive general conditions for 100 percent frequency conversion in any doubly resonant nonlinear cavity, for both second- and third-harmonic generation via chi2 and chi3 nonlinearities. We find that conversion efficiency is optimized for a certain critical power depending on the cavity parameters, and assuming reasonable parameters we predict 100 percent conversion using milliwatts of power or less. These results follow from a semi-analytical coupled-mode theory framework which is generalized from previous work to include both chi2 and chi3 media as well as inhomogeneous (fully vectorial) ca…
We propose to use an optical cavity to enhance the sensitivity of magnetometers relying on the detection of the spin state of high-density nitrogen-vacancy ensembles in diamond using infrared optical absorption. The role of the cavity is to obtain a contrast in the absorption-detected magnetic resonance approaching unity at room temperature. We project an increase in the photon shot-noise limited sensitivity of two orders of magnitude in comparison with a single-pass approach. Optical losses can limit the enhancement to one order of magnitude which could still enable room temperature operation…
A ~545 mW single-frequency tunable 520 nm green laser has been demonstrated using a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) bulk crystal based on single-pass third-harmonic generation (THG) of a 1560 nm laser via single-pass second-harmonic generation (SHG) followed by single-pass sum-frequency generation (SFG). In single-pass SHG, two cascaded periodically-poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (PPMgO:LN) crystals were used, and ~3.5 W 780.25 nm doubled laser output is produced, corresponding to maximum doubling efficiency of 26.8%. The system can provide a pump source (52…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of quadratic dark localized dissipative states arising in cavity enhanced second-harmonic generation. These states, formed through the locking of plane front waves, undergo collapsed homoclinic snaking and may exhibit oscillatory dynamics.
Nonlinear optical effects have been studied extensively in microresonators as more photonics applications transition to integrated on-chip platforms. Due to low optical losses and small mode volumes, microresonators are demonstrably the state-of-the-art platform for second harmonic generation (SHG). However, the working bandwidth of such microresonator-based devices are relatively small, presenting a challenge for applications where a specifically targeted wavelength needs to be addressed. In this work, we analyzed the phase-matching window and resonance wavelength with respect to varying micr…
We develop a method to control the group delay of electromagnetic waves continuously using a doubly resonant metasurface. The method is based on the dependences of i) the group velocity in a medium featuring two resonance lines on the resonance linewidths and ii) the resonance linewidth of a metasurface composed of split-ring resonators on an incidence angle of electromagnetic wave. To verify this method for group-delay control, we design a terahertz metasurface composed of two split-ring resonators with different resonance frequencies and numerically analyze the transmission characteristic of…
We present a versatile mid-infrared frequency comb spectroscopy system based on a doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator tunable in the 3-5.4 μm range and two detection methods, a Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and a Vernier spectrometer. Using the FTS with a multipass cell we measure high-precision broadband absorption spectra of CH$_4$ and NO at ~3.3 μm and ~5.2 μm, respectively, and of atmospheric species (CH$_4$, CO, CO$_2$ and H$_2$O) in air in the signal and idler wavelength range. The figure of merit of the system is on the order of 10$^{-8}$ cm$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$ per spect…
Colloidal Quantum dots (CQDs) are nowadays one of the cornerstones of modern photonics as they have led to the emergence of new optoelectronic and biomedical technologies. However, the full characterization of these quantum emitters is currently restricted to the visible wavelengths and it remains a key challenge to optically probe single CQDs operating in the infrared spectral domain which is targeted by a growing number of applications. Here, we report the first experimental detection and imaging at room temperature of single infrared CQDs operating at telecommunication wavelengths. Imaging …
We report that rhomb-shaped metal nanoantenna arrays support multiple plasmonic resonances, making them favorable bio-sensing substrates. Besides the two localized plasmonic dipole modes associated with the two principle axes of the rhombi, the sample supports an additional grating-induced surface plasmon polariton resonance. The plasmonic properties of all modes are carefully studied by far-field measurements together with numerical and analytical calculations. The sample is then applied to surface-enhanced Raman scattering measurements. It is shown to be highly efficient since two plasmonic …
We present an experimental study on the cavity-atom ensemble system, and realize the doubly-resonant cavity enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency, where both the probe and control lasers are resonant with a Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate the precise frequency manipulating of the hybrid optical-atomic resonances, through either temperature or cavity length tuning. In such a system, the control power can be greatly enhanced due to the cavity, and all-optical switching is achieved with a much lower control laser power compared to previous studies. A new theoretical model is develo…
Second-order nonlinear effects, such as second-harmonic generation, can be strongly enhanced in nanofabricated photonic materials when both fundamental and harmonic frequencies are spatially and temporally confined. Practically designing low-volume and doubly resonant nanoresonators in conventional semiconductor compounds is challenging owing to their intrinsic refractive index dispersion. In this work we review a recently developed strategy to design doubly resonant nanocavities with low mode volume and large quality factor by localized defects in a photonic crystal structure. We build on thi…
Topology-driven nonlinear light-matter effects open up new paradigms for both topological photonics and nonlinear optics. Here, we propose to achieve high-efficiency second-harmonic generation in a second-order photonic topological insulator. Such system hosts highly localized topological corner states with large quality factors for both fundamental and second harmonic waves, which could be matched perfectly in frequency by simply tuning the structural parameters. Through the nonlinear interaction of the doubly resonant topological corner states, unprecedented frequency conversion efficiency i…
It is shown that non-centrosymmetric materials with bulk second-order nonlinear susceptibility can be used to generate strongly antibunched radiation at an arbitrary wavelength, solely determined by the resonant behavior of suitably engineered coupled microcavities. The proposed scheme exploits the unconventional photon blockade of a coherent driving field at the input of a coupled cavity system, where one of the two cavities is engineered to resonate at both fundamental and second harmonic frequencies, respectively. Remarkably, the unconventional blockade mechanism occurs with reasonably low …
We analytically and numerically study the direct soliton generation in a cw-pumped doubly resonant degenerate optical parametric oscillator via pump frequency scanning. By means of bifurcation and linear stability analysis of the homogeneous solutions, we discriminate distinctive soliton forming mechanisms and corresponding dynamics, depending on pump and signal group velocity dispersions (GVDs). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study regarding the dynamics of pure quadratic solitons. In addition, we discuss how to extend soliton existing regime and easily access quadratic solit…
Photonic nanostructures simultaneously maximizing spectral and spatial overlap between fundamental and second-harmonic confined modes are highly desirable for enhancing second-order nonlinear effects in nonlinear media. These conditions have thus far remained challenging to satisfy in photonic crystal cavities because of the difficulty in designing a band gap at the second-harmonic frequency. Here, we solve this issue by using instead a bound state in the continuum at that frequency, and we design a doubly-resonant photonic crystal slab cavity with strongly improved figures of merit for nonlin…
Second harmonic generation is enhanced at the surface lattice resonance in plasmonic nanoparticle arrays. We carried out a parametric investigation on two-dimensional lattices composed of gold nanobars where the centrosymmetry is broken at oblique incidence. We study the influence of the periodicity, the incidence angle and the direction of the linear input polarization on the second harmonic generation. Excitation of the surface lattice resonance either at the fundamental or second harmonic wavelength, achieved by varying the incidence angle, enhance the conversion efficiency. As a special ca…
Raman lasers based on bulk diamond are a valuable resource for generating coherent light in wavelength regimes where no common laser diodes are available. Nevertheless, the widespread use of such lasers is limited by their high threshold power requirements on the order of several Watts. Using on-chip microresonators, a significant reduction of the lasing threshold by more than two orders of magnitude has been shown. However, these resonators lack a continuous tuning mechanism and, mainly due to fabrication limitations, their implementation in the visible remains elusive. Here, we propose a pla…
We investigate theoretically and numerically the photonic band structure in the optical domain of an array of core-shell metal-semiconductor nanowires. Corresponding negative-index photonic bands are calculated, showing isotropic equifrequency surfaces. The effective (negative) electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, retrieved from S parameters, are used to compare the performance of such nanowire arrays with homogeneous media in canonical examples, such as refraction through a prism and flat-lens focusing. Very good agreement is found, indeed confirming the effective medium behavior …
We present a continuous-filtering Vernier spectrometer operating in the 3.15-3.4 $μ$m range, based on a femtosecond doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator, a cavity with a finesse of 340, a grating mounted on a galvo scanner and two photodiodes. The spectrometer allows acquisition of one spectrum spanning 250 nm of bandwidth in 25 ms with 8 GHz resolution, sufficient for resolving molecular lines at atmospheric pressure. An active lock ensures good frequency and intensity stability of the consecutive spectra and enables continuous signal acquisition and efficient averaging. The relative…

Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based gas sensors with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low cost, and small footprint are desirable across a broad range of applications in energy, environment, safety, and public health. However, most works have focused on either acoustic resonator to enhance acoustic wave or optical resonator to enhance optical wave. Herein, we develop a gas sensor based on doubly resonant PAS in which the acoustic and optical waves are simultaneously enhanced using combined optical and acoustic resonators in a centimeter-long configuration. Not only the lower detection …
The generation of light endowed with orbital angular momentum, frequently termed optical vortex light, is commonly achieved by passing a conventional beam through suitably constructed optical elements. This Letter shows that the necessary phase structure for vortex propagation can be directly produced through the creation of twisted light from the vacuum. The mechanism is based on optical emission from a family of chromophore nano-arrays that satisfy specific geometric and symmetry constraints. Each such array can support pairs of electronically delocalized doubly degenerate excitons whose azi…

We report on a novel experimental scheme to generate continuous-wave (cw), high power, and higher-order optical vortices tunable across mid-IR wavelength range. Using cw, two-crystal, singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (T-SRO) and pumping one of the crystals with Gaussian beam and the other crystal with optical vortices of orders, lp = 1 to 6, we have directly transferred the vortices at near-IR to the mid-IR wavelength range. The idler vortices of orders, li = 1 to 6, are tunable across 2276-3576 nm with a maximum output power of 6.8 W at order of, li = 1, for the pump power of 25 …
Nonlinear light-matter interactions and their applications are constrained by properties of available materials. The use of metamaterials opens the way to achieve precise control over electromagnetic properties at a microscopic level, providing new tools for experimental studies of complex nonlinear phenomena in photonics. Here a doubly resonant nonlinear meta-atom is proposed, analyzed and characterized in the GHz spectral range. The underlying structure is composed of a pair of split rings, resonant at both fundamental and nonlinear frequencies. The rings share a varactor diode, which serves…
We propose a scheme for efficient cavity-enhanced nonlinear THz generation via difference-frequency generation (DFG) processes using a triply resonant system based on photonic crystal cavities. We show that high nonlinear overlap can be achieved by coupling a THz cavity to a doubly-resonant, dual-polarization near-infrared (e.g. telecom band) photonic-crystal nanobeam cavity, allowing the mixing of three mutually orthogonal fundamental cavity modes through a chi(2) nonlinearity. We demonstrate through coupled-mode theory that complete depletion of the pump frequency - i.e., quantum-limited con…
We expose a mechanism for the dynamical generation and control of light states with diverse topologies in spiraling guiding structures. Specifically, we show that spiraling shallow refractive index landscapes induce coupling and periodic energy exchange between states with different topological charges. Such a resonant effect enables excitation of optical vortices by vortex-free inputs and allows the output topological charge of the beam to be controlled. The presence of nonlinearity results in a strong asymmetrization of the resonant curves and a shift of the resonant frequencies. Resonant vo…
