We calculate the leading-twist helicity-dependent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton at finite skewness in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). From these (and previously calculated helicity-independent GPDs) we obtain the spin decomposition of the proton, including predictions for quark intrinsic spin and orbital angular momentum. The inclusion of multiple species of diquarks is found to have a significant effect on the flavor decomposition, and resolving the internal structure of these dynamical diquark correlations proves essential for the mechanical stability of the proton. At a scale of $Q^2=4\,$GeV$^2$ we find that the up and down quarks carry an intrinsic spin and orbital angular momentum of $S_u=0.534$, $S_d=-0.214$, $L_u=-0.189$, and $L_d=0.210$, whereas the gluons have a total angular momentum of $J_g=0.151$. The down quark is therefore found to carry almost no total angular momentum due to cancellations between spin and orbital contributions. Comparisons are made between these spin decomposition results and lattice QCD calculations.
We calculate the leading-twist, helicity-independent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton, at finite skewness, in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chomodynamics (QCD). The NJL model reproduces low-energy characteristics of QCD, including dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). The proton bound-state amplitude is solved for using the Faddeev equation in a quark-diquark approximation, including both dynamical scalar and axial vector diquarks. GPDs are calculated using a dressed non-local correlator, consistent with DCSB, which is obtained by solving a Bethe-Salp…
We present the first calculation of the $x$-dependence of the isovector transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the proton within lattice QCD. We compute the matrix elements with non-local operators containing a Wilson line. The calculation implements the Breit symmetric frame. The proton momenta are chosen as $0.83,\,1.25,\,1.67$ GeV, and the values of the momentum transfer squared are $0.69,\,1.02$ GeV$^2$. These combinations include cases with zero and nonzero skewness. The calculation is performed using one ensemble of two degenerate-mass light, a strange and a charm quark…
We present first results on selected twist-3 quark GPDs using the quasi-distribution method. This approach relates lattice QCD data and light-cone distribution functions using Large Momentum Effective Theory (LaMET). We calculate quark-antiquark correlators of boosted nucleons coupled to non-local operators with vector and axial Dirac structure, which is transverse to the momentum boost. We use three values of the momentum boost, namely 0.83, 1.25, 1.67 GeV. The GPDs are defined in the symmetric (Breit) frame, which we implement here with 4-vector momentum transfer squared of 0, 0.69 and 1.39 …
Hard exclusive processes, such as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), allow to access generalized parton distributions (GPDs). By means of an Impulse Approximation (IA) calculation, it is shown here how, in the low momentum transfer region, the sum of the GPDs H and E is dominated by the neutron contribution. Thanks to this property, 3He could open a new way to access the neutron structure information. In this work, a simple and efficient extraction procedure of the neutron GPDs, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in IA analysis, is proposed.
The decomposition of the nucleon spin into that of quarks and gluons is related to twist-two GPDs according to Ji sum rule. Further decomposition into the helicity and the orbital angular momentum inevitably requires twist-three GPDs. In this paper we derive exact relations between twist-three GPDs and the canonical orbital angular momentum density of quarks and gluons, and check their consistency with the spin sum rule. Our work demonstrates that the complete decomposition of the nucleon spin fits well with the framework of perturbative QCD.
We discuss the Wigner functions of the nucleon which provide multi-dimensional images of the quark distributions in phase space. They combine in a single picture all the information contained in the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). In particular, we present results for the distribution of unpolarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon obtained in a light-cone constituent quark model. We show how quark orbital angular momentum can be extracted from these distributions and compare it with alternative definitions …

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) encoding multidimensional information of hadron partonic structure appear as the building blocks in a factorized description of hard exclusive reactions. The nucleon GPDs have been accessed by deeply virtual Compton scattering and deeply virtual meson production with lepton beam. A complementary probe with hadron beam is the exclusive pion-induced Drell-Yan process. In this paper, we discuss recent theoretical advances on describing this process in terms of nucleon GPDs and pion distribution amplitudes. Furthermore, we address the feasibility of measurin…
We calculate the spin-averaged generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of sea quarks in the proton at zero skewness from nonlocal covariant chiral effective theory, including one-loop contributions from intermediate states with pseudoscalar mesons and octet and decuplet baryons. A relativistic regulator is generated from the nonlocal Lagrangian where a gauge link is introduced to guarantee local gauge invariance, with additional diagrams from the expansion of the gauge link ensuring conservation of electric charge and strangeness. Flavor asymmetries for sea quarks at zero and finite momentum t…
The quark orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been recognized as an important piece of the proton spin puzzle. A lot of effort has been invested in trying to extract it quantitatively from the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), which are accessed in high-energy processes and provide three-dimensional pictures of the nucleon. Recently, we have shown that it is more natural to access the quark OAM from the phase-space or Wigner distributions. We discuss the concept of Wigner distributions in the context of quantum field theor…
While the total orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a definite quark flavor in a longitudinally-polarized nucleon can be obtained through a sum rule involving twist-two generalized parton distribution (GPDs), its distribution as a function of parton momentum in light-front coordinates is more complicated to define and measure because it involves intrinsically twist-three effects. In this paper, we consider two different parton OAM distributions. The first is manifestly gauge invariant, and its moments are local operators and calculable in lattice QCD. We show that it can potentially be measured …

In particular, we present results for the distribution of unpolarized quark in a longitudinally polarized nucleon. Treating this distribution as it was a classical distribution, we also obtain the expectation value of the orbital angular momentum operator and compare the corresponding results from …
An impulse approximation analysis is described of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) H and E of the 3He nucleus, quantities which are accessible in hard exclusive processes, such as coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). The calculation is based on the Av18 interaction. The electromagnetic form factors are correctly recovered in the proper limits. The sum of the GPDs H and E of 3He, at low momentum transfer, is largely dominated by the neutron contribution, thanks to the unique spin structure of 3He. This nucleus is therefore very promising for the extraction of the neutro…
The two leading twist, quark helicity conserving generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of 3He, accessible, for example, in coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS), are calculated in impulse approximation (IA). Their sum, at low momentum transfer, is found to be largely dominated by the neutron contribution, so that 3He is very promising for the extraction of the neutron information. Anyway, such an extraction could be not trivial. A technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in the IA analysis in the extraction procedure, even at moderate values of the moment…
The shape of the electron is studied using lowest-order perturbation theory. Quantities used to probe the structure of the proton: form factors, generalized parton distributions, transverse densities, Wigner distributions and the angular momentum content are computed for the electron-photon component of the electron wave function. The influence of longitudinally polarized photons, demanded by the need for infrared regularization via a non-zero photon mass, is included. The appropriate value of the photon mass depends on experimental conditions, and consequently the size of the electron (as def…

A new picture is given of generalized parton distributions probed in experiments in which the probe scale $Q^{2}$ and the momentum transfer $\DD^{2}$ are well separated. Application of this picture to the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the form factors $F_{1}, F_{2}$ shows that gauge invariant quark orbital angular momentum can be measured and indeed {\it localized} in the transverse profile of the proton. A previous prediction that $\sqrt{Q^{2}}F_{2}(Q^{2})/F_{1}(Q^{2}) \sim const. $ is generalized to GPD language. This prediction appears to have been confirmed by recent CEBAF data.

We analyze the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio $R(Q^{2})=QF_2(Q^{2})/F_1(Q^{2})$ as a function of momentum transfer $Q^{2}$ within perturbative QCD. We find that the prediction for $R(Q^{2})$ at large momentum transfer $Q$ depends on the exclusive quark wave functions, which are unknown. For a wide range of wave functions we find that $ QF_2/F_1 \sim\ const$ at large momentum transfer, in agreement with recent JLAB data.
Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are three-dimensional structure functions of hadrons, and they can reveal the orbital-angular-momentum contributions to the nucleon spin. Therefore, GPDs are important for solving the proton spin puzzle. The generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs) are the $s$-$t$ crossed quantities of the GPDs, and the GDAs can be investigated in two-photon process ($γ^* γ\to h\bar h$) which is accessible at KEKB. The pion GDAs were obtained by analyzing the Belle measurements for $π^0 π^0$ production in the $e^+ e^-$ collision. From the obtained GDAs, the form factor…
We show that fully aligned neutron-proton pairs play a crucial role in the low-energy spectroscopy of nuclei. with valence nucleons in a high-j orbital. Their dominance is valid in nuclei with valence neutrons and protons in different high-j orbitals as well as in N = Z nuclei, where all nucleons occupy the same orbital. We demonstrate analytically this generic feature of the neutron-proton interaction for a variety of systems with four valence nucleons interacting through realistic, effective forces. The dominance of fully aligned neutron-proton pairs results from the combined effect of (i) a…
We calculate the quark orbital angular momentum of the nucleon from the quark energy-momentum tensor form factors on the lattice. The disconnected insertion is estimated stochastically which employs the $Z_2$ noise with an unbiased subtraction. This reduced the error by a factor of 4 with negligible overhead. The total quark contribution to the proton spin is found to be $0.30 \pm 0.07$. From this and the quark spin content we deduce the quark orbital angular momentum to be $0.17 \pm 0.06$ which is $\sim 34$% of the proton spin. We further predict that the gluon angular momentum to be $0.20 \p…
With the relativistic Coulomb wave function boundary condition, the energies, widths and wave functions of the single proton resonant orbitals for $^{17}$Ne are studied by the analytical continuation of the coupling constant (ACCC) approach within the framework of the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. Pairing correlations and contributions from the single-particle resonant orbitals in the continuum are taken into consideration by the resonant Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approach, in which constant pairing strength is used. It can be seen that the fully self-consistent calculations with…
A survey of the available single-proton data in $A\leq17$ nuclei, along with calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential, show that the ordering of the $0d_{5/2}$ and $1s_{1/2}$ proton orbitals are determined primarily by the proximity of the $s$-state proton energy to the Coulomb barrier. This is analogous to the dependence of the corresponding neutron orbitals in proximity to the neutron threshold, that was previously discussed.
