We introduce a fast algorithm to compute the Ramanujan-Deninger gamma function and its logarithmic derivative at positive values. Such an algorithm allows us to greatly extend the numerical investigations about the Euler-Kronecker constants $\mathfrak{G}_q$, $\mathfrak{G}_q^+$ and $M_q=\max_{χ\ne χ_0} \vert L^\prime/L(1,χ)\vert$, where $q$ is an odd prime, $χ$ runs over the primitive Dirichlet characters $\bmod\ q$, $χ_0$ is the trivial Dirichlet character $\bmod\ q$ and $L(s,χ)$ is the Dirichlet $L$-function associated to $χ$. Using such algorithms we obtained that $\mathfrak{G}_{50 040 955 631} =-0.16595399\dotsc$ and $\mathfrak{G}_{50 040 955 631}^+ =13.89764738\dotsc$ thus getting a new negative value for $\mathfrak{G}_q$. Moreover we also computed $\mathfrak{G}_q$, $\mathfrak{G}_q^+$ and $M_q$ for every odd prime $q$, $10^6< q\le 10^7$, thus extending previous results. As a consequence we obtain that both $\mathfrak{G}_q$ and $\mathfrak{G}_q^+$ are positive for every odd prime $q$ up to $10^7$ and that $\frac{17}{20} \log \log q< M_q < \frac{5}{4} \log \log q $ for every odd prime $1531 < q\le 10^7$. In fact the lower bound holds true for $q>13$. The programs used and the results here described are collected at the following address \url{http://www.math.unipd.it/~languasc/Scomp-appl.html}.
In this paper, we propose the use of Ramanujan class of polynomials for the construction of prime order elliptic curves using the CM-method. We compare (theoretically and experimentally) the efficiency of using this new class against the use of the Weber, $M_{D,l}(x)$ and $M_{D,p_1,p_2}(x)$ polynomials and show that they clearly outweigh all of them in the generation of prime order elliptic curves.
The generating function of partitions with repeated (resp. distinct) parts such that each odd part is less than twice the smallest part is shown to be the third order mock theta function $ω(q)$ (resp. $ν(-q)$). Similar results for partitions with the corresponding restriction on each even part are also obtained, one of which involves the third order mock theta function $ϕ(q)$. Congruences for the smallest parts functions associated to such partitions are obtained. Two analogues of the partition-theoretic interpretation of Euler's pentagonal theorem are also obtained.
Ramanujan gave a recurrence relation for the partition function in terms of the sum of the divisor function $σ(n)$. In 1885, J.W. Glaisher considered seven divisor sums closely related to the sum of the divisors function. We develop a calculus to associate a generating function with each of these divisor sums. This yields analogues of Ramanujan's recurrence relation for several partition-theoretic functions as well as $r_k(n)$ and $t_k(n)$, functions counting the number of ways of writing a number as a sum of squares (respectively, triangular) numbers. As by-products of this association, we ob…
At the 1987 Ramanujan Centenary meeting Dyson asked for a coherent group-theoretical structure for Ramanujan's mock theta functions analogous to Hecke's theory of modular forms. Many of Ramanujan's mock theta functions can be written in terms of $R(ζ,q)$, where $R(z,q)$ is the two-variable generating function of Dyson's rank function and $ζ$ is a root of unity. Building on earlier work of Watson, Zwegers, Gordon and McIntosh, and motivated by Dyson's question, Bringmann, Ono and Rhoades studied transformation properties of $R(ζ,q)$. In this paper we strengthen and extend the results of Bringma…
In this paper we study the security of a proposal for Post-Quantum Cryptography from both a number theoretic and cryptographic perspective. Charles-Goren-Lauter in 2006 [CGL06] proposed two hash functions based on the hardness of finding paths in Ramanujan graphs. One is based on Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak (LPS) graphs and the other one is based on Supersingular Isogeny Graphs. A 2008 paper by Petit-Lauter-Quisquater breaks the hash function based on LPS graphs. On the Supersingular Isogeny Graphs proposal, recent work has continued to build cryptographic applications on the hardness of finding …
The aim of our present work here is to present few results in the theory of Mellin transforms using the method that S. Ramanujan used in proving his Master Theorem. Further applications of our results for some number-theoretic functions such as the prime counting function and the zeta function are established.
We use sums over integer compositions analogous to generating functions in partition theory, to express certain partition enumeration functions as sums over compositions into parts that are $k$-gonal numbers; our proofs employ Ramanujan's theta functions. We explore applications to lacunary $q$-series, and to a new class of composition-theoretic Dirichlet series.
The denominator formula for the Monster Lie algebra is the product expansion for the modular function $j(z)-j(τ)$ in terms of the Hecke system of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-modular functions $j_n(τ)$. This formula can be reformulated entirely number-theoretically. Namely, it is equivalent to the description of the generating function for the $j_n(z)$ as a weight 2 modular form in $τ$ with a pole at $z$. Although these results rely on the fact that $X_0(1)$ has genus 0, here we obtain a generalization, framed in terms of polar harmonic Maass forms, for all of the $X_0(N)$ modular curves.…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field with a finite residue field. To a 2-dimensional finite complex $X_Γ$ arising as the quotient of the Bruhat-Tits building $X$ associated to $\Sp_4(F)$ by a discrete torsion-free cocompact subgroup $Γ$ of $\PGSp_4(F)$, associate the zeta function $Z(X_Γ, u)$ which counts geodesic tailless cycles contained in the 1-skeleton of $X_Γ$. Using a representation-theoretic approach, we obtain two closed form expressions for $Z(X_Γ, u)$ as a rational function in $u$. Equivalent statements for $X_Γ$ being a Ramanujan complex are given in terms of vertex, edge, and …
The zeta function attached to a finite complex $X_Γ$ arising from the Bruhat-Tits building for $\PGL_3(F)$ was studied in \cite{KL}, where a closed form expression was obtained by a combinatorial argument. This identity can be rephrased using operators on vertices, edges, and directed chambers of $X_Γ$. In this paper we reprove the zeta identity from a different aspect by analyzing the eigenvalues of these operators using representation theory. As a byproduct, we obtain equivalent criteria for a Ramanujan complex in terms of the eigenvalues of the operators on vertices, edges, and directed cha…
What is an interesting number theoretic or a combinatorial characterization of the divisors of 24 amongst all positive integers? In this paper I will provide one characterization in terms of modular multiplication tables. This idea evolved interestingly from a question raised by a student in my elementary number theory class. I will give the characterization and then provide 5 proofs using various techniques: Chinese remainder theorem, structure theory of units, Dirichlet's theorem on primes in an arithmetic progression, Bertrand-Chebyshev theorem, and results of Erdos and Ramanujan on the pi(…
A generalization of a beautiful $q$-series identity found in the unorganized portion of Ramanujan's second and third notebooks is obtained. As a consequence, we derive a new three-parameter identity which is a rich source of partition-theoretic information. In particular, we use this identity to obtain a generalization of a recent result of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, which itself generalizes the famous result of Fokkink, Fokkink and Wang. This three-parameter identity also leads to several new weighted partition identities as well as a natural proof of a recent result of Garvan. This natural p…
The $n^{th}$ cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_n(x)$ is the minimal polynomial of an $n^{th}$ primitive root of unity. Its coefficients are the subject of intensive study and some formulas are known for them. Here we are interested in formulas which are valid for all natural numbers $n$. In these a host of famous number theoretical objects such as Bernoulli numbers, Stirling numbers of both kinds and Ramanujan sums make their appearance, sometimes even at the same time! In this paper we present a survey of these formulas which until now were scattered in the literature and introduce an unified approach…
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical numb…
