We performed Population III (Pop III) binary evolution by using population synthesis simulations for seven different models. We found that Pop III binaries tend to be binary black holes (BBHs) with chirp mass $M_{\rm chirp} \sim 30~M_{\odot}$ and they can merge at present day due to long merger time. The merger rate densities of Pop III BBHs at $z=0$ ranges 3.34--21.2 $\rm /yr/Gpc^3$ which is consistent with the aLIGO/aVIRGO result of 9.7--101 $\rm /yr/Gpc^3$. These Pop III binaries might contribute to some part of the massive BBH gravitational wave (GW) sources detected by aLIGO/aVIRGO. We also calculated the redshift dependence of Pop III BBH mergers. We found that Pop III low spin BBHs tend to merge at low redshift, while Pop III high spin BBHs do at high redshift, which can be confirmed by future GW detectors such as ET, CE, and DECIGO. These detectors can also check the redshift dependence of BBH merger rate and spin distribution. Our results show that except for one model, the mean effective spin $\left\langle χ_{\rm eff} \right\rangle$ at $z=0$ ranges $0.02$--$0.3$ while at $z=10$ it does $0.16$--$0.64$. Therefore, massive stellar-mass BBH detection by GWs will be a key for the stellar evolution study in the early universe.
The two neutron star-black hole mergers (GW200105 and GW200115) observed in gravitational waves by advanced LIGO and Virgo, mark the first ever discovery of such binaries in nature. We study these two neutron star-black hole systems through isolated binary evolution, using a grid of population synthesis models. Using both mass and spin observations (chirp mass, effective spin and remnant spin) of the binaries, we probe their different possible formation channels in different metallicity environments. Our models only support LIGO data when assuming the black hole is non spinning. Our results sh…

The LIGO and Virgo Collaborations currently conduct searches for gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences in real-time. For promising candidate events, a sky map and distance estimation are released in low-latency, to facilitate their electromagnetic follow-up. Currently, no information is released about the masses of the compact objects. Recently, Margalit and Metzger (2019) have suggested that knowledge of the chirp mass of the detected binary neutron stars could be useful to prioritize the electromagnetic follow-up effort, and have urged the LIGO-Virgo collaboration to release c…
The probability number distribution function of binary black hole mergers observed by LIGO/Virgo O3a has double peaks as a function of chirp mass $M_c$, total mass $M_t$, primary black hole mass $M_1$ and secondary one $M_2$, respectively. The larger chirp mass peak is at $M_c \cong 30 M_{\odot}$. The distribution of $M_2$ vs. $M_1$ follows the relation of $M_2\cong 0.7M_1$. For initial mass functions of Population III stars in the form of $f(M) \propto M^{-α}$, population synthesis numerical simulations with $0\leq α\leq 1.5$ are consistent with O3a data for $M_c \gtrsim 20M_{\odot}$. The dis…
Vamana is a mixture model framework that infers the astrophysical distribution of chirp mass, mass ratio, and spin component aligned with the orbital angular momentum for the binary black hole population. We extend the mixing components in this framework to also model the redshift evolution of merger rate and report all the major one and two-dimensional features in the Binary Black Hole population using the 69 gravitational wave signals detected with a false alarm rate $<1\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ in the third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC)-3. Endorsing our previous report and a corrobora…
The gravitational waves (GWs) from a binary black hole (BBH) with masses between 10^4 and 10^7 Msun can be detected with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) once their orbital frequency exceeds 10^-4 - 10^-5 Hz. The binary separation at this stage is approximately a=100 R_g (gravitational radius), and the orbital speed is of order v/c=0.1. We argue that at this stage, the binary will be producing bright electromagnetic (EM) radiation via gas bound to the individual BHs. Both BHs will have their own photospheres in X-ray and possibly also in optical bands. Relativistic Doppler modulat…
We report on the impact of a probabilistic prescription for compact remnant masses and kicks on massive binary population synthesis. We find that this prescription populates the putative mass gap between neutron stars and black holes with low-mass black holes. However, evolutionary effects reduce the number of X-ray binary candidates with low-mass black holes, consistent with the dearth of such systems in the observed sample. We further find that this prescription is consistent with the formation of heavier binary neutron stars such as GW190425, but over-predicts the masses of Galactic double …
The population analysis of compact binaries involves the reconstruction of some of the gravitational wave (GW) signal parameters, such as, the mass and the spin distribution, that gave rise to the observed data. This article introduces VAMANA, which reconstructs the binary black hole population using a mixture model and facilitates excellent density measurement as informed by the data. VAMANA uses a mixture of weighted Gaussians to reconstruct the chirp mass distribution. We expect Gaussian mixtures to provide flexibility in modeling complex distributions and enable us in capturing details in …
Although most gravitational wave events are claimed to be mergers of unusually massive, $25-65M_\odot$, black holes, it is now clear that 20\% of all reported events comprise modest mass black holes, $5-15M_\odot$, like the stellar black holes in the Milky Way. We show that such stellar mass black hole binaries (BBH) if magnified by lensing galaxies can be detected at high redshift, 1$< $z$ <$5, with chirp masses increased by $1+z$, accounting for the majority of apparently high mass BBH events. This simple lensing explanation is manifested by the evident bimodality of BBH chirp masses now vis…
Recent observations have revealed that the remnants of stellar-coalescence transients are bipolar. This raises the questions of how these bipolar morphologies arise and what they teach us about the mechanisms of mass ejection during stellar mergers and common-envelope phases. In this paper, we analyze hydrodynamic simulations of the lead-in to binary coalescence, a phase of unstable Roche lobe overflow that takes the binary from the Roche limit separation to the engulfment of the more compact accretor within the envelope of the extended donor. As mass transfer runs away at increasing rates, ga…
A Chandra observation of the Large Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant DEM L241 reveals an interior unresolved source which is probably an accretion-powered binary. The optical counterpart is an O5III(f) star making this a High-Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) with orbital period likely to be of order tens of days. Emission from the remnant interior is thermal and spectral information is used to derive density and mass of the hot material. Elongation of the remnant is unusual and possible causes of this are discussed. The precursor star probably had mass > 25 solar masses
Energy released when the core of a high-mass star collapses into a black hole often powers an explosion that creates a supernova remnant. Black holes have limited windows of observability, and consequently are rarely identified in association with supernova remnants. Analysing multi-messenger data, we show that MAXI J1535-571 is the black hole produced in the stellar explosion that gave rise to the supernova remnant G323.7-1.0, making it the first case of an association between a black hole low-mass X-ray binary and a supernova remnant. Given this connection, we can infer from our modelling th…
An ultra-stripped supernova (USSN) is a type of core-collapse SN explosion proposed to be a candidate formation site of a double neutron star (DNS) binary. We investigate the dynamical evolution of an ultra-stripped supernova remnant (USSNR), which should host a DNS at its center. By accounting for the mass-loss history of the progenitor binary using a model developed by a previous study, we construct the large-scale structure of the {circumstellar medium (CSM)} up to a radius $\sim 100\,{\rm pc}$, and simulate the explosion and subsequent evolution of a USSN surrounded by such a CSM environme…
A supra-massive neutron star (NS) spinning extremely rapidly could survive from a merger of NS-NS binary. The spin-down of this remnant NS that is highly magnetized would power the isotropic merger ejecta to produce a bright mergernova emission in ultraviolet/optical bands. Before the mergernova, the early interaction between the NS wind and the ejecta can drive a forward shock propagating outwards into the ejecta. As a result, a remarkable amount of heat can be accumulated behind the shock front and the final escaping of this heat can produce a shock breakout emission. We describe the dynamic…
Although the main features of the evolution of binary neutron star systems are now well established, many details are still subject to debate, especially regarding the post-merger phase. In particular, the lifetime of the hyper-massive neutron stars formed after the merger is very hard to predict. In this work, we provide a simple analytic relation for the lifetime of the merger remnant as function of the initial mass of the neutron stars. This relation results from a joint fit of data from observational evidence and from various numerical simulations. In this way, a large range of collapse ti…
We present a novel universal relation for binary neutron star mergers with long-lived neutron star remnants: inspired by recent work based on numerical relativity simulations, we propose a novel approach using perturbative calculations that allow us to relate the pre-merger neutron star binary tidal deformability to the effective compactness of the post-merger remnant. Our results allow for the prediction of the stellar parameters of a long-lived remnant neutron star from the study of gravitational waves emitted during the pre-merger phase.
Employing a simplified version of the Israel-Stewart formalism of general-relativistic shear-viscous hydrodynamics, we explore the evolution of a remnant massive neutron star of binary neutron star merger and pay special attention to the resulting gravitational waveforms. We find that for the plausible values of the so-called viscous alpha parameter of the order $10^{-2}$, the degree of the differential rotation in the remnant massive neutron star is significantly reduced in the viscous timescale, $\alt 5$\,ms. Associated with this, the degree of non-axisymmetric deformation is also reduced qu…
We report the discovery of a new high mass X-ray binary pulsar, XMMU J050722.1-684758, possibly associated with the supernova remnant MCSNR J0507-6847 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using XMM-Newton X-ray observations. Pulsations with a periodicity of 570 s are discovered from the Be X-ray binary XMMU J050722.1-684758 confirming its nature as a HMXB pulsar. The HMXB is located near the geometric centre of the supernova remnant MCSNR J0507-6847 (0.9 arcmin from the centre) which supports the XRB-SNR association. The estimated age of the supernova remnant is 43-63 kyr which points to a middle ag…
Massive (hypermassive and supramassive) neutron stars are likely to be often formed after the merger of binary neutron stars. We explore the evolution process of the remnant massive neutron stars and gravitational waves emitted by them, based on numerical-relativity simulations for binary neutron star mergers employing a variety of equations of state and choosing a plausible range of the neutron-star mass of binaries. We show that the lifetime of remnant hypermassive neutron stars depends strongly on the total binary mass and also on the equations of state. Gravitational waves emitted by the r…
We carry out a comprehensive smooth particle hydrodynamics simulation survey of double-degenerate white dwarf binary mergers of varying mass combinations in order to establish correspondence between initial conditions and remnant configurations. We find that all but one of our simulation remnants share general properties such as a cold, degenerate core surrounded by a hot disk, while our least massive pair of stars forms only a hot disk. We characterize our remnant configurations by the core mass, the rotational velocity of the core, and the half-mass radius of the disk. We also find that some…
We study the formation of coalescing binary black holes via the evolution of isolated field binaries that go through the common envelope phase in order to obtain the combined distributions of the main observables of Advanced LIGO. We used a hybrid technique that combines the parametric binary population synthesis code COMPAS with detailed binary evolution simulations performed with the MESA code. We then convolved our binary evolution calculations with the redshift- and metallicity-dependent star-formation rate and the selection effects of gravitational-wave detectors to obtain predictions of …
Recently, many gravitational wave events from compact binary mergers have been detected by LIGO. Determining the final mass and spin of the remnant black holes (RBHs) is a fundamental issue and is also important in astrophysics. In this paper, unified models for predicting the final mass and spin of the RBHs from compact binary mergers is proposed. The models achieve a good accuracy within the parameter range of interest. In addition, the rotational energy of the RBHs is also studied which is relevant to the electromagnetic counterparts of the mergers. It is found the distribution of the rotat…
The connection between short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) and binary neutron star (BNS) mergers was recently confirmed by the association of GRB 170817A with the merger event GW170817. However, no conclusive indications were obtained on whether the merger remnant that powered the SGRB jet was an accreting black hole (BH) or a long-lived massive neutron star (NS). Here, we explore the latter case via BNS merger simulations covering up to 250 ms after merger. We report, for the first time in a full merger simulation, the formation of a magnetically-driven collimated outflow along the spin axis of th…
We study high-energy emission from the mergers of neutron star binaries as electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational waves aside from short gamma-ray bursts. The mergers entail significant mass ejection, which interacts with the surrounding medium to produce similar but brighter remnants than supernova remnants in a few years. We show that electrons accelerated in the remnants can produce synchrotron radiation in X-rays detectable at $\sim 100$ Mpc by current generation telescopes and inverse Compton emission in gamma rays detectable by the \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescopes and the Cheren…
The Einstein Telescope (ET), a wide-band, future third generation gravitational wave detector, is expected to have detection rates of $\sim 10^5 - 10^6$ binary black hole (BBH) detections and $\sim 7 \times 10^4$ binary neutron star (BNS) detections in one year. The coalescence of compact binaries with a total mass of 20 - 100 $M_{\odot}$, typical of BH-BH or BH-NS binaries, will be visible up to redshift $z\approx 20$ and even higher, thus facilitating the understanding of the dark era of the Universe preceding the birth of the first stars. The ET will therefore be a crucial instrument for po…
The electromagnetic (EM) signal of a binary neutron star (BNS) merger depends sensitively on the total binary mass, $M_{\rm tot}$, relative to various threshold masses set by the neutron star (NS) equation-of-state (EOS), parameterized through the NS maximum mass, $M_{\rm TOV}$, and characteristic radius, $R_{1.6}$. EM observations of a BNS merger detected through its gravitational wave (GW) emission, which are of sufficient quality to ascertain the identity of the merger remnant, can therefore constrain the values of $M_{\rm TOV}$ and $R_{1.6}$, given the tight connection between $M_{\rm tot}…
Gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars were recently detected for the first time by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, in event GW170817. This detection placed an upper limit on the effective tidal deformability of the two neutron stars and tightly constrained the chirp mass of the system. We report here on a new simplification that arises in the effective tidal deformability of the binary, when the chirp mass is specified. We find that, in this case, the effective tidal deformability of the binary is surprisingly independent of the component masses of the individual neutron …
We present forward modeling from the BPASS code suite of the population of observed gravitational wave (GW) transients reported by the LIGO/VIRGO consortium (LVC) during their third observing run, O3(a+b). Specifically, we predict the expected chirp mass and mass ratio distributions for GW transients, taking account of detector sensitivity to determine how many events should have been detected by the current detector network in O3(a+b). We investigate how these predictions change by alternating between four different remnant mass estimation schemes and two supernovae (SNe) kick prescriptions. …
Recent observations by the Swift satellite have revealed long-lasting ($\sim 10^2-10^5\,\mathrm{s}$), "plateau-like" X-ray afterglows in the vast majority of short gamma-ray bursts events. This has put forward the idea of a long-lived millisecond magnetar central engine being generated in a binary neutron star (BNS) merger and being responsible for the sustained energy injection over these timescales ("magnetar model"). We elaborate here on recent simulations that investigate the early evolution of such a merger remnant in general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. These simulations reveal ver…
Excess energy method is used in searches of gravitational waves (GWs) produced from sources with poorly modeled characteristics. It identifies GW events by searching for a coincidence appearance of excess energy in a GW detector network. While it is sensitive to a wide range of signal morphologies, the energy outliers can be populated by background noise events (background), thereby reducing the statistical confidence of a true signal. However, if the physics of the source is partially understood, weak model dependent constraints can be imposed to suppress the background. This letter presents …
We present a comprehensive study on how well gravitational-wave signals of binary black holes with nonzero eccentricities can be recovered with state of the art model-independent waveform reconstruction and parameter estimation techniques. For this we use BayesWave, a Bayesian algorithm used by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration for unmodeled reconstructions of signal waveforms and parameters. We used two different waveform models to produce simulated signals of binary black holes with eccentric orbits and embed them in samples of simulated noise of design-sensitivity Advanced LIGO detectors. We stu…
The coalescence of a binary neutron star (NS) system may in some cases produce a massive NS remnant that is long-lived and, potentially, indefinitely stable to gravitational collapse. Such a remnant has been proposed as an explanation for the late X-ray emission observed following some short duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and as possible electromagnetic counterparts to the gravitational wave chirp. A stable NS merger remnant necessarily possesses a large rotational energy > 1e52 erg, the majority of which is ultimately deposited into the surrounding circumburst medium (CBM) at mildly relativ…
We performed general relativistic, long-term, axisymmetric neutrino radiation hydrodynamics simulations for the remnant formed after the binary neutron star merger, which consist of a massive neutron star and a torus surrounding it. As an initial condition, we employ the result derived in a three-dimensional, numerical relativity simulation for the binary neutron star merger. We investigate the properties of neutrino-driven ejecta. Due to the pair-annihilation heating, the dynamics of the neutrino-driven ejecta is significantly modified. The kinetic energy of the ejecta is about two times larg…
Primordial black holes created in the early Universe can constitute a substantial fraction of dark matter and serve as seeds for early galaxy formation. Binary primordial black holes with masses of the order of a few dozen solar masses can explain the observed LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave events. In this Letter, we show that primordial black holes with log-normal mass spectrum centered at $M_0\simeq 15-17 M_\odot$ simultaneously explain both the chirp mass distribution of the detected LIGO/Virgo binary black holes and the differential chirp mass distribution of merging binaries as inferred fr…
The inspiral and merger of two black holes produces a remnant black hole with mass and spin determined by the properties of its parent black holes. Using the inferred population properties of component black holes from the first two and a half observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Virgo, we calculate the population properties of the leftover remnant black holes. By integrating their rate of formation over the age of the universe, we estimate the number density of remnant black holes today. Using simple prescriptions for the cosmic star formation rate and black hole inspiral delay times, we deter…
We use the gravitational wave signals from binary black hole merger events observed by LIGO and Virgo to reconstruct the underlying mass and spin distributions of the population of merging black holes. We reconstruct the population using the mixture model framework VAMANA (Tiwari 2020) using observations in GWTC-2 occurring during the first two observing runs and the first half of the third run (O1, O2, and O3a). Our analysis identifies a structure in the chirp mass distribution of the observed population. Specifically, we identify peaks in the chirp mass distribution at 8, 14, 26, and 45 M an…
We perform a general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulation for $\approx 30$ ms after merger of a binary neutron star to a remnant massive neutron star (RMNS) with a high spatial resolution of the finest grid resolution $12.5$ m. First, we estimate that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at merger could amplify the magnetic-field energy up to $\sim 1\%$ of the thermal energy. Second, we find that the magnetorotational instability in the RMNS envelope and torus with $ρ< 10^{13}~{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$ sustains magneto-turbulent state and the effective viscous parameter in these regions is likely t…
We investigate gross properties of binary components and remnant in GW170817 using equations of state within the finite temperature field theoretical models. We also adopt finite temperature equations of state in the density dependent hadron field theory for this study. Properties of binary components are studied using zero temperature equations of state. Particularly, we investigate tidal deformabilities and radii of binary components in light of GW170817. An analytical expression relating the radii and the combined tidal deformability is obtained for binary neutron star masses in the range $…
Multiple approaches are required to study the evolution of black-hole binaries. While the post-Newtonian approximation is sufficient to describe the early inspiral (even from infinitely large orbital separation), only numerical relativity can capture the full complexity of the dynamics near merger. We combine multi-timescale post-Newtonian integrations with numerical-relativity surrogate models, thus mapping the entire history of the binary from its asymptotic configuration at past-time infinity to the post-merger remnant. This approach naturally allows us to assess the impact of the precessio…
The coalescence of a neutron-star binary is likely to result in the formation of a neutron-star merger remnant for a large range of binary mass configurations. The massive merger remnant shows strong oscillations, which are excited by the merging process, and emits gravitational waves. Here we discuss possibilities and prospects of inferring unknown stellar properties of neutron stars by the detection of postmerger gravitational-wave emission, which thus leads to constraints of the equation of state of high-density matter. In particular, the dominant oscillation frequency of the postmerger rem…
The nature of GW190425, a presumed binary neutron star (BNS) merger detected by the LIGO/Virgo Scientific Collaboration (LVC) with a total mass of $3.4^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ M$_{\odot}$, remains a mystery. With such a large total mass, GW190425 stands at five standard deviations away from the total mass distribution of Galactic BNSs of $2.66\pm 0.12$ M$_{\odot}$. LVC suggested that this system could be a BNS formed from a fast-merging channel rendering its non-detection at radio wavelengths due to selection effects. BNSs with orbital periods less than a few hours - progenitors of LIGO/Virgo mergers -…
The main features of the gravitational dynamics of binary neutron star systems are now well established. While the inspiral can be precisely described in the post-Newtonian approximation, fully relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical simulations are required to model the evolution of the merger and post-merger phase. However, the interpretation of the numerical results can often be non-trivial, so that toy models become a very powerful tool. Not only do they simplify the interpretation of the post-merger dynamics, but also allow to gain insights into the physics behind it. In this work, we constru…
Outflows launched from a remnant disc of compact binary merger may have essential contribution to the kilonova emission. Numerical calculations are conducted in this work to study the structure of accretion flows and outflows. By the incorporation of limited-energy advection in the hyper-accretion discs, outflows occur naturally from accretion flows due to imbalance between the viscous heating and the sum of the advective and radiative cooling. Following this spirit, we revisit the properties of the merger outflow ejecta. Our results show that around $10^{-3} \sim 10^{-1} M_\odot$ of the disc …
The observation of a radioactively-powered kilonova associated with the first binary neutron star (BNS) merger detected in gravitational waves proved that these events are ideal sites for the production of heavy r-process elements. However, the physical origin of the ejected material responsible for the early ("blue") and late ("red") components of this kilonova is still debated. Here, we investigate the possibility that the early/blue kilonova originated from the magnetically driven baryon wind launched after merger by the metastable neutron star remnant. Exploiting a magnetized BNS merger si…
We study the geometry and dynamics of the Vela complex including the Vela supernova remnant (SNR), the binary system gamma2 Velorum and the Gum nebula. We show that the Vela SNR belongs to a subclass of non-Sedov adiabatic remnants in a cloudy interstellar medium (ISM), the dynamics of which is determined by the heating and evaporation of ISM clouds. We explain observable characteristics of the Vela SNR with a SN explosion with energy 1.4 x 10^50 ergs near the step-like boundary of the ISM with low intercloud densities (~ 10^{-3} cm^{-3}) and with a volume-averaged density of clouds evaporated…
We study the neutrino flavor evolution in the neutrino-driven wind from a binary neutron star merger remnant consisting of a massive neutron star surrounded by an accretion disk. With the neutrino emission characteristics and the hydrodynamical profile of the remnant consistently extracted from a three-dimensional simulation, we compute the flavor evolution by taking into account neutrino coherent forward scattering off ordinary matter and neutrinos themselves. We employ a "single-trajectory" approach to investigate the dependence of the flavor evolution on the neutrino emission location and a…
The emergence of novel differential rotation laws that can reproduce the rotational profile of binary neutron star merger remnants has opened the way for the construction of equilibrium models with properties that resemble those of remnants in numerical simulations. We construct models of merger remnants, using a recently introduced 4-parameter differential rotation law and three tabulated, zero-temperature equations of state. The models have angular momenta that are determined by empirical relations, constructed through numerical simulations. After a systematic exploration of the parameter sp…
