Principle of Equivalence makes effects of classical gravity vanish in local inertial frames. What role does the Principle of Equivalence play as regards quantum gravitational effects in the local inertial frames? I address this question here from a specific perspective. At mesoscopic scales close to, but somewhat larger than, Planck length one could describe quantum spacetime and matter in terms of an effective geometry. The key feature of such an effective quantum geometry is the existence of a zero-point-length. When we proceed from quantum geometry to quantum matter, the zero-point-length will introduce corrections in the propagator for matter fields in a specific manner. On the other hand, one cannot ignore the self-gravity of matter fields at the mesoscopic scales and this will also modify the form of the propagator. Consistency demands that, these two modifications - coming from two different directions - are the same. I show that this non-trivial demand is actually satisfied. Surprisingly, the Principle of Equivalence, operating at sub-Planck scales, ensures this consistency in a subtle manner.
We show that "particle production" by gravitational field, especially the Hawking effect, may be treated as some quantum inertial effect, with the energy of Hawking radiation as some vacuum energy shift. This quantum inertial effect is mainly resulted from some intrinsical energy fluctuation $\hbarκ/c$ for a black hole. In particular, there is an extreme case in which $\hbarκ/c$ is the Planck energy, giving a "Planck black hole" whose event horizon's diameter is one Planck length. Moreover, we also provide a possibility to obtain some positive cosmological constant for an expanding universe, w…
We show that the locally constant force necessary to get a stable hyperbolic motion regime for classical charged point particles, actually, is a combination of an applied external force and of the electromagnetic radiation reaction force. It implies, as the strong Equivalence Principle is valid, that the passive gravitational mass of a charged point particle should be slight greater than its inertial mass. An interesting new feature that emerges from the unexpected behavior of the gravitational and inertial mass relation, for classical charged particles, at very strong gravitational field, is …
In this paper we explicitly show that in general relativity, the relative velocity of two local inertial frames is always less than the velocity of light. This fact is a by-product of the equivalence principle. The general result is then illustrated within two examples, the FLRW cosmological model and the Schwarzschild metric.
We discuss the non-relativistic limit of quantum field theory in an inertial frame, in the Rindler frame and in the presence of a weak gravitational field, highlighting and clarifying several subtleties. We study the following topics: (a) While the action for a relativistic free particle is invariant under the Lorentz transformation, the corresponding action for a non-relativistic free particle is not invariant under the Galilean transformation, but picks up extra contributions at the end points. This leads to an extra phase in the non-relativistic wave function under a Galilean transformation…
The presence of gravity implies corrections to the Einstein-Planck formula $E=h ν$. This gives hope that the divergent blueshift in frequency, associated to the presence of a black hole horizon, could be smoothed out for the energy. Using simple arguments based on Einstein's equivalence principle we show that this is only possible if a black hole emits, in first approximation, not just a single particle, but thermal radiation.
A study of kinematics of a 2-body system is used to show that the Mach principle, previously rejected by general relativity, can still serve as an alternative to the concept of absolute space, if one takes into account that the background of distant stars (galaxies) determines {\it both} the inertial and the gravitational masses of a body.
The firewall was introduced into black hole evaporation scenarios as a deus ex machina designed to break entanglements and preserve unitarity (Almheiri et.al., 2013). Here we show that the firewall actually exists and does break entanglements, but only in the context of a virtual reality for observers stationed near the horizon, who are following the long-term evolution of the hole. These observers are heated by acceleration radiation at the Unruh temperature and see pair creation at the horizon as a high-energy phenomenon. The objective reality is very different. We argue that Hawking pair cr…
We revisit the recently found equivalence for the response of a static scalar source interacting with a {\em massless} Klein-Gordon field when the source is (i) static in Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Unruh vacuum associated with the Hawking radiation and (ii) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime, in the inertial vacuum, provided that the source's proper acceleration is the same in both cases. It is shown that this equivalence is broken when the massless Klein-Gordon field is replaced by a {\em massive} one.
It is argued that the `problem of time' in quantum gravity necessitates a refinement of the local inertial structure of the world, demanding a replacement of the usual Minkowski line element by a 4+2n dimensional pseudo-Euclidean line element, with the extra 2n being the number of internal phase space dimensions of the observed system. In the refined structure, the inverse of the Planck time takes over the role of observer-independent conversion factor usually played by the speed of light, which now emerges as an invariant but derivative quantity. In the relativistic theory based on the refine…
Several approaches to quantum gravity suggest that the standard description of spacetime as probed at low-energy, with four dimensions, is replaced in the Planckian regime by a spacetime with a spectral dimension of two. The implications for relativistic symmetries can be momentous, and indeed the most tangible picture for "running" of the spectral dimension, found within Horava-Lifschitz gravity, requires the breakdown of relativity of inertial frames. In this Letter we incorporate running spectral dimensions in a scenario that does not require the emergence of a preferred frame. We consider …
The Newtonian approximation for the gravitational field equation should not necessarily involve admission of non-relativistic properties of the source terms in Einstein's equations: it is sufficient to merely consider the weak-field condition for gravitational field. When a source has electromagnetic nature, one simply {\em cannot} ignore its intrinsically relativistic properties, since there cannot be invented any non-relativistic approximation which would describe electromagnetic stress-energy tensor adequately, even at large distances where the fields become naturally weak. But the test par…
In an ideal test of the equivalence principle, the test masses fall in a common inertial frame. A real experiment is affected by gravity gradients, which introduce systematic errors by coupling to initial kinematic differences between the test masses. We demonstrate a method that reduces the sensitivity of a dual-species atom interferometer to initial kinematics by using a frequency shift of the mirror pulse to create an effective inertial frame for both atomic species. This suppresses the gravity-gradient-induced dependence of the differential phase on initial kinematic differences by a facto…
We explore the interplay between the equivalence principle and a generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations known as extended uncertainty principle, that comprises the effects of spacetime curvature at large distances. Specifically, we observe that, when the modified uncertainty relations hold, the weak formulation of the equivalence principle is violated, since the inertial mass of quantum systems becomes position-dependent whilst the gravitational mass is left untouched. To obtain the above result, spinor and scalar fields are separately analyzed by considering the non-relativist…
"The last remnant of physical objectivity of space-time" is disclosed in the case of a continuous family of spatially non-compact models of general relativity (GR). The {\it physical individuation} of point-events is furnished by the intrinsic degrees of freedom of the gravitational field, (viz, the {\it Dirac observables}) that represent - as it were - the {\it ontic} part of the metric field. The physical role of the {\it epistemic} part (viz. the {\it gauge} variables) is likewise clarified as emboding the unavoidable non-inertial aspects of GR. At the end the philosophical import of the {\…
It was shown recently that in four dimensions scalar sources with fixed proper acceleration minimally coupled to a massless Klein-Gordon field lead to the same responses when they are (i) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime (in the inertial vacuum) and (ii) static in the Schwarzschild spacetime (in the Unruh vacuum). Here we show that this equivalence is broken if the spacetime dimension is more than four.
The Quantum Stationary HJ Equation (QSHJE) that we derived from the equivalence principle, gives rise to initial conditions which cannot be seen in the Schroedinger equation. Existence of the classical limit leads to a dependence of the integration constant $\ell=\ell_1+i\ell_2$ on the Planck length. Solutions of the QSHJE provide a trajectory representation of quantum mechanics which, unlike Bohm's theory, has a non-trivial action even for bound states and no wave guide is present. The quantum potential turns out to be an intrinsic potential energy of the particle which, similarly to the rela…
Gauge field theories may quite generally be defined as describing the coupling of a matter-field to an interaction-field, and they are suitably represented in the mathematical framework of fiber bundles. Their underlying principle is the so-called gauge principle, which is based on the idea of deriving the coupling structure of the fields by satisfying a postulate of local gauge covariance. The gauge principle is generally considered to be sufficient to define the full structure of gauge-field theories. This paper contains a critique of this usual point of view: firstly, by emphazising an gaug…
Dirac constraint theory allows to identify the York canonical basis (diagonalizing the York-Lichnerowicz approach) in ADM tetrad gravity for asymptotically Minkowskian space-times without super-translations. This allows to identify the inertial (gauge) and tidal (physical) degrees of freedom of the gravitational field and to interpret Ashtekar variables in these space-times. The use of radar 4-coordinates centered on a time-like observer allows to connect the 3+1 splittings of space-time with the relativistic metrology used in atomic physics and astronomy. The asymptotic ADM Poincaré group rep…
A review is given of the theory of non-inertial frames (with the associated inertial effects and the study of the non-relativistic limit) in Minkowski space-time, of parametrized Minkowski theories and of the rest-frame instant form of dynamics for isolated systems admitting a Lagrangian description. The relevance and gauge equivalence of the clock synchronization conventions for the identification of the instantaneous 3-spaces (Euclidean only in inertial frames) are described. Then this formalism is applied to tetrad gravity in globally hyperbolic, asymptotically Minkowskian space-times witho…
The two surprising features of gravity are (a) the principle of equivalence and (b) the connection between gravity and thermodynamics. Using principle of equivalence and special relativity in the {\it local inertial frame}, one could obtain the insight that gravity must possess a geometrical description. I show that, using the same principle of equivalence, special relativity and quantum theory in the {\it local Rindler frame} one can obtain the Einstein-Hilbert action functional for gravity and thus the dynamics of the spacetime. This approach, which essentially involves postulating that the …
The special relativistic test theory of Mansouri and Sexl is sketched. Theories based on different clock synchronisations are found to be equivalent to special relativity, as regards experimental results. The conventionality of clock synchronisation is shown not to hold, by means of an example, in a simple accelerated system and through the principle of equivalence in gravitational fields, especially when the metric is not static. Experimental implications on very precise clock synchronisation on earth are discussed.
In this work, resolutions will be given for commonly stated problems associated with a model that assumes that space and time are discretized (i.e., atomized). This model is in contrast to the continuous space-time model that is used in all common physical theories and equations -- a model that assumes that spatial coordinates and time are continuous variables. The resolutions to the problems are arrived at, not by proposing any new theories or postulates, but by strictly adhering to: Ernst Mach's principle of non-absolute space, the tenets of logical positivism, quantum mechanics and general …
I show that it is possible to formulate the Relativity postulates in a way that does not lead to inconsistencies in the case of space-times whose short-distance structure is governed by an observer-independent length scale. The consistency of these postulates proves incorrect the expectation that modifications of the rules of kinematics involving the Planck length would necessarily require the introduction of a preferred class of inertial observers. In particular, it is possible for every inertial observer to agree on physical laws supporting deformed dispersion relations of the type $E^2- c^2…
It is shown that the extra coordinate of 5D induced-matter and membrane theory is related in certain gauges to the inertial rest mass of a test particle. This implies that the Weak Equivalence Principle is a geometric symmetry, valid only in the limit in which the test mass is negligible compared to the source mass. Exact solutions illustrate this, and show the way to possible resolutions of the cosmological-constant and hierarchy problems.
We show that the necessary and sufficient condition for erecting locally inertial coordinates at a point $p$ of a $U^4$-space, and therefore assuring the validity of the equivalence principle at that point, is the vanishing at $p$ of the symmetric part of the contortion tensor. This fact does not demand a vanishing torsion, but only a totally antisymmetric one. As an application, we derive the geodesic deviation equation; and prove the compatibility with the Newtonian limit.
The work argues the principle of equivalence to be a theorem and not a principle (in a sense of an axiom). It contains a detailed analysis of the concepts of normal and inertial frame of reference. The equivalence principle is proved to be valid (at every point and along every path) in any gravitational theory based on linear connections. Possible generalizations of the equivalence principle are pointed out.
We construct phase-space structure of a typical higher-order theory of gravity, in the background of anisotropic Bianchi-1 mini-superspace, following `Modified Horowitz Formalism' as well as applying `Dirac Algorithm' (after taking care of the divergent terms), and establish equivalence. Canonical quantization, and semiclassical approximation are performed to expatiate the fact that such a quantum theory transits successfully to a classical de-Sitter universe. Inflation has thereafter been studied. The numerical values of the inflationary parameters show excellent agreement with the latest rel…
On incorporating special relativity theory into an extended equivalence principle, post-Newtonian gravitational phenomena beyond that originally predicted by Einstein are predicted (required), such as geodetic and gravitomagnetic precessions of local inertial frames, and precession of Mercury's orbital perihelion. Why were not these phenomena predicted in the years 1907-1911? The unique 1/c^2 order dynamical equations for clock rates and motion of both bodies and light in local gravity are derived which guarantee fulfillment of the special relativistic equivalence principle.
In special and general relativity the synchronization convention of distant clocks may be simulated with a mathematical definition of global non-inertial frames (the only ones existing in general relativity due to the equivalence principle) with well-defined instantaneous 3-spaces. For asymptotically Minkowskian Einstein space-times this procedure can be used at the Hamiltonian level in the York canonical basis, where it is possible for the first time to disentangle tidal gravitational degrees of freedom from gauge inertial ones. The most important inertial effect connected with clock synchron…
It is shown that quantum particle detectors are not reliable probes of spacetime structure. In particular, they fail to distinguish between inertial and non-inertial motion in a general spacetime. To prove this, we consider detectors undergoing circular motion in an arbitrary static spherically symmetric spacetime, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the response function to vanish when the field is in the static vacuum state. By examining two particular cases, we show that there is no relation, in general, between the vanishing of the response function and the fact that the dete…
Frames normal for linear connections in vector bundles are defined and studied. In particular, such frames exist at every fixed point and/or along injective path. Inertial frames for gauge fields are introduced and on this ground the principle of equivalence for (system of) gauge fields is formulated.
The equivalence of inertial and gravitational masses is a defining feature of general relativity. Here, we clarify the status of the equivalence principle for interactions mediated by a universally coupled scalar, motivated partly by recent attempts to modify gravity at cosmological distances. Although a universal scalar-matter coupling is not mandatory, once postulated, it is stable against classical and quantum renormalizations in the matter sector. The coupling strength itself is subject to renormalization of course. The scalar equivalence principle is violated only for objects for which ei…
In four-dimensional general relativity the spacetime outside of an isolated spherical star is described by a unique line element, which is the Schwarzschild metric. As a consequence, the "gravitational" mass and the "inertial" mass of a star are equal to each other. However, theories that envision our world as embedded in a larger universe, with more than four dimensions, permit a number of possible non-Schwarzschild 4D exteriors, which typically lead to {\it different} masses, violating the weak equivalence principle of ordinary general relativity. Therefore, the question arises of whether th…
We investigate the interaction of the gravitational field with a quantum particle. We derive the wave equation in the curved galilean spacetime from the very broad Quantum mechanical assumptions and from covariance under the Milne group. The inertial and gravitational masses are equal in that equation. So, we give the proof of the equality for the non-relativistic quantum particle, without applying the equivalence principle to the Schrödinger equation and witout imposing any relation to the classical equations of motion. This result constitutes a substantial strengthening of the previous resul…
Recently, Verlinde has suggested a novel model of duality between thermodynamics and gravity which leads to an emergent phenomenon for the origin of gravity and general relativity. In this paper, we investigate some features of this model in the presence of noncommutative charged black hole by performing the method of coordinate coherent states representing smeared structures. We derive several quantities, e.g. temperature, energy and entropic force. Our approach clearly exhibits that the entropic force on a smallest fundamental cell of holographic surface with radius $r_0$ is halted. Accordin…
It has been demonstrated, using variational methods, that quantum vacuum energy gravitates according to the equivalence principle, at least for the finite Casimir energies associated with perfectly conducting parallel plates. This conclusion holds independently of the orientation of the plates. We review these arguments and add further support to this conclusion by considering parallel semitransparent plates, that is, $δ$-function potentials, acting on a massless scalar field, in a spacetime defined by Rindler coordinates. We calculate the force on systems consisting of one or two such plates …
We generalize E. Verlinde's entropic gravity reasoning to a phase-space noncommutativity set-up. This allow us to impose a bound on the product of the noncommutative parameters based on the Equivalence Principle. The key feature of our analysis is an effective Planck's constant that naturally arises when accounting for the noncommutative features of the phase-space.
The formulae for Planck length, Hawking temperature and Unruh-Davies temperature are derived by using only laws of classical physics together with the Heisenberg principle. Besides, it is shown how the Hawking relation can be deduced from the Unruh relation by means of the principle of equivalence; the deep link between Hawking effect and Unruh effect is in this way clarified.
In the theory of General Relativity, gravity is described by a metric which couples minimally to the fields representing matter. We consider here its "veiled" versions where the metric is conformally related to the original one and hence is no longer minimally coupled to the matter variables. We show on simple examples that observational predictions are nonetheless exactly the same as in General Relativity, with the interpretation of this "Weyl" rescaling "à la Dicke", that is, as a spacetime dependence of the inertial mass of the matter constituents.
We describe a geometric and symmetry-based formulation of the equivalence principle in non-relativistic physics. It applies both on the classical and quantum levels and states that the Newtonian potential can be eliminated in favor of a curved and time-dependent spatial metric. It is this requirement that forces the gravitational mass to be equal to the inertial mass. We identify the symmetry responsible for the equivalence principle as the remnant of time-reparameterization symmetry of the relativistic theory. We also clarify the transformation properties of the Schroedinger wave-function und…
The role of the equivalence principle in the context of non-relativistic quantum mechanics and matter wave interferometry, especially atom beam interferometry, will be discussed. A generalised form of the weak equivalence principle which is capable of covering quantum phenomena too, will be proposed. It is shown that this generalised equivalence principle is valid for matter wave interferometry and for the dynamics of expectation values. In addition, the use of this equivalence principle makes it possible to determine the structure of the interaction of quantum systems with gravitational and i…
We investigate the interaction of the gravitational field with a quantum particle. First, we give the proof of the equality of the inertial and the gravitational mass for the nonrelativistic quantum particle, independently of the equivalence principle. Second, we show that the macroscopic body cannot be described by the many-particle Quantum Mechanics. As an important tool we generalize the Bargmann's theory of ray representations and explain the connection with the state vector reduction problem. The Penrose's hypothesis is discussed, i.e. the hypothesis that the gravitational field may influ…
It is argued that the classical local inertial frame used to define rotational states of quantum systems is only approximate, and that geometry itself must also be rotationally quantized at the Planck scale. A Lorentz invariant statistical model of correlations in quantum geometry on larger scales predicts spacelike correlations that describe rotational fluctuations in the inertial frame. Fluctuations are estimated to significantly affect the gravity of quantum field states on a macroscopic scale, characterized by the Chandrasekhar radius. It is suggested that the cosmological constant might b…
The validity of the Weak Equivalence Principle relative to a local inertial frame is detailed in a scalar-vector gravitation model with Lorentz-Poincaré type interpretation. Given the previously established first Post-Newtonian concordance of dynamics with General Relativity, the principle is to this order compatible with GRT. The gravitationally modified Lorentz transformations, on which the observations in physical coordinates depend, are shown to provide a physical interpretation of \emph{parallel transport}. A development of ``geodesic'' deviation in terms of the present model is given as …
The Einstein equivalence principle is based on the equality of gravitational mass and inertial mass, which has led to the universality of a free-fall concept. The principle has been extremely well tested so far and has been tested with a great precision. However, all these tests and the corresponding arguments are based on a classical setup where the notion of position and velocity of the mass is associated with a classical value as opposed to the quantum entities. Here, we will provide a simple protocol based on creating large spatial superposition states in a laboratory to test the fully qua…
Under a Lorentz-transformation, Mie's 1912 gravitational mass behaves identical as de Broglie's 1923 clock-like frequency. The same goes for Mie's inertial mass and de Broglie's wave-like frequency. This allows the interpretation of de Broglie's "Harmony of the Phases" as a "Principle of Equivalence" for Quantum Gravity. Thus, the particle-wave duality can be given a realist interpretation. The "Mie-de Broglie" interpretation suggests a correction of Hamilton's variational principle in the quantum domain. The equivalence of the masses can be seen as the classical "limit" of the quantum equival…
We re-advocated the conjecture of indistinguishability between the quantum fluctuation observed from a Rindler frame and a real thermal bath, for the case of a free massless scalar field. To clarify the robustness and how far such is admissible, in this paper, we investigate the issue from two different non-inertial observers' perspective. A detailed analysis is being done to find the observable quantities as measured by two non-inertial observers (one is Rindler and another is uniformly rotating) on the real thermal bath and Rindler frame in Minkowski spacetime. More precisely, we compare The…
Gravitational self-interactions are assumed to be determined by the covariant derivative acting on the Riemann-Christoffel field strength. Once imposed on a metric theory, this Yang-Mills gauge constraint extends the equality of gravitational mass and inertial mass to compact bodies with non-negligible gravitational binding energy. Applied to generalized Brans-Dicke theories, it singles out one tensor theory and one scalar theory for gravity but also suggests a way to implement a minimal violation of the strong equivalence principle.
We consider an unexplored aspect of the mass equivalence principle in the quantum realm, its connection with atomic stability. We show that if the gravitational mass were different from the inertial one, a Hydrogen atom placed in a constant gravitational field would become unstable in the long term. In contrast, independently of the relation between the two masses, the atom does not become ionized in an uniformly accelerated frame. This work, in the line of previous analyses studying the properties of quantum systems in gravitational fields, contributes to the extension of that programme to in…
In his sixth problem, Hilbert called for an axiomatic approach to theoretical physics with an aim to achieve precision and rigour in scientific reasoning, where logic and language (semantics) of physics play the pivotal role. It is from such a point of view, we investigate the scientific value of the modern experiments to perform quantum tests of equivalence principle. Determination of Planck constant involves the use of acceleration due to gravity of the earth $(g)$ that results in the force on a test mass. The equivalence between inertial mass and gravitational mass of a test object is assum…
Static observers in curved spacetimes may interpret their proper acceleration as the opposite of a local gravitational field (in the Newtonian sense). Based on this interpretation and motivated by the equivalence principle, we are led to investigate congruences of timelike curves in Minkowski spacetime whose acceleration field coincides with the acceleration field of static observers of curved spaces. The congruences give rise to non-inertial frames that are examined. Specifically we find, based on the locality principle, the embedding of simultaneity hypersurfaces adapted to the non-inertial …
In addition, the use of this equivalence principle makes it possible to determine the structure of the interaction of quantum systems with gravitational and i…
A general formal definition of a theory of space and time compatible with the inertia principle is given. The formal definition of reference frame and inertial equivalence between reference frames are used to construct the class of inertial frames. Then, suitable cocycle relations among the coefficients of space-time transformations between inertial frames are established. The kinematical meaning of coefficients and their reciprocity properties are discussed in some detail. Finally, a rest frame map family is introduced as the most general constitutive assumption to obtain the coefficients and…
It was generally believed that, in general relativity, the fundamental laws of nature should be invariant or covariant under a general coordinate transformation. In general relativity, the equivalence principle tells us the existence of a local inertial coordinate system and the fundamental laws in the local inertial coordinate system which are the same as those in inertial reference system. Then, after a general coordinate transformation, the fundamental laws of nature in arbitrary coordinate system or in arbitrary curved space-time can be obtained. However, through a simple example, we find …
