EuTiO3, a band insulator, and LaTiO3, a Mott insulator, are both antiferromagnetic with transition temperatures ~ 5.5 K and ~ 160 K, respectively. Here, we report the synthesis of Eu1-xLaxTiO3 thin films with x = 0 to 1 by oxide molecular beam epitaxy. The films in the full range have high crystalline quality and show no phase segregation, allowing us carry out transport measurements to study their electrical and magnetic properties. From x = 0.03 to 0.95, Eu1-xLaxTiO3 films show conduction by electrons as charge carriers, with differences in carrier densities and mobilities, contrary to the insulating nature of pure EuTiO3 and LaTiO3. Following a rich phase diagram, the magnetic ground states of the films vary with increasing La-doping level, changing Eu1-xLaxTiO3 from an antiferromagnetic insulator to an antiferromagnetic metal, a ferromagnetic metal, a paramagnetic metal, and back to an antiferromagnetic insulator. These emergent properties reflect the evolutions of the band structure, mainly at the Ti t2g bands near the Fermi level, when Eu2+ are gradually replaced by La3+. This work sheds light on this method for designing the electrical and magnetic properties in strongly-correlated oxides and completes the phase diagram of the titanate Eu1-xLaxTiO3.
The electronic structure of interfaces between YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$ and SrTiO$_3$ is studied using local spin density approximation (LSDA) with intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion (LSDA+U). We find a metallic state in cuprate/titanate heterostructures with the hole carriers concentrated substantially in the CuO$_2$-layers and in the first interface TiO$_2$ and SrO planes. This effective interface doping appears due to the polarity of interfaces, caused by the first incomplete copper oxide unit cell. Interface-induced high pre-doping of CuO$_2$-layers is a key mechanism controlling the superconducting…
Doping the distorted-perovskite Mott insulators LaTiO$_3$ and GdTiO$_3$ with a single SrO layer along the [001] direction gives rise to a rich correlated electronic structure. A realistic superlattice study by means of the charge self-consistent combination of density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory reveals layer- and temperature-dependent multi-orbital metal-insulator transitions. An orbital-selective metallic layer at the interface dissolves via an orbital-polarized doped-Mott state into an orbital-ordered insulating regime beyond the two conducting TiO$_2$ layers. We find…
Motivated by the commonplace observation of Mott insulators away from integer filling, we construct a simple thermodynamic argument for phase separation in first-order doping-driven Mott transitions. We show how to compute the critical dopings required to drive the Mott transition using electronic structure calculations for the titanate family of perovskites, finding good agreement with experiment. The theory predicts the transition is percolative and should exhibit Coulomb frustration.
We show that the Bloch states in the conduction band of SrTiO$_3$ arise from the interplay between highly anisotropic hopping in sub-bands derived from the Ti $t_{2g}$ orbitals and spin-orbit coupling that mixes these orbitals. Because of the nearly flat-band characteristics for one of the principal axes, at sufficiently high doping these Bloch states become unstable with respect to electron interactions, resulting in Mott-like singlet correlations. These findings may be relevant to the anomalous electronic properties of SrTiO$_3$, including its unusual superconductivity.
The lattice response of a prototype Mott insulator, SmTiO3, to hole doping is investigated with atomic-scale spatial resolution. SmTiO3 films are doped with Sr on the Sm site with concentrations that span the insulating and metallic sides of the filling-controlled Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT). The GdFeO3-type distortions are investigated using an atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy technique that can resolve small lattice distortions with picometer precision. We show that these distortions are gradually and uniformly reduced as the Sr concentration is increased…
Electric double layer transistor configurations have been employed to electrostatically dope single crystals of insulating SrTiO_{3}. Here we report on the results of such doping over broad ranges of temperature and carrier concentration employing an ionic liquid as the gate dielectric. The surprising results are, with increasing carrier concentration, an apparent carrier-density dependent conductor-insulator transition, a regime of anomalous Hall effect, suggesting magnetic ordering, and finally the appearance of superconductivity. The possible appearance of magnetic order near the boundary b…
The magnetic properties of the hole(x)-doped Mott-Hubbard, antiferromagnetic insulator, NdTiO3, have been investigated in Nd1-xTiO3. For the materials in 0.010(6) < x < 0.112(4), correlation between the structural and magnetic properties is discussed with respect to the Ti - O - Ti angles and the Ti - O bond distances. For 0.010(6) < x < 0.071(10), long-range magnetic order is observed through low temperature neutron diffraction and heat capacity. Neel ordering temperatures of 88.2 K and 61.9 K are determined, respectively, for x = 0.019(6) and x = 0.064(10). From high resolution neutron diffr…
We study the effects of hole doping on one-dimensional Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom. We describe the system in terms of a generalized t-J model. At a specific point in parameter space the model becomes integrable in analogy to the one-band supersymmetric t-J model. We use the Bethe ansatz to derive a set of nonlinear integral equations which allow us to study the thermodynamics exactly. Moving away from this special point in parameter space we use the density-matrix renormalization group applied to transfer matrices to study the evolution of various phases of the undoped sys…
Diluted magnetic semiconductors possessing intrinsic static magnetism at high temperatures represent a promising class of multifunctional materials with high application potential in spintronics and magneto-optics. In the hexagonal Fe-doped diluted magnetic oxide, 6H-BaTiO$_{3-δ}$, room-temperature ferromagnetism has been previously reported. Ferromagnetism is broadly accepted as an intrinsic property of this material, despite its unusual dependence on doping concentration and processing conditions. However, the here reported combination of bulk magnetization and complementary in-depth local-p…
We applied the generalized Bloch theorem to verify the ground state (most stable state) in monolayer metal diiodides 1T-XI$_{2}$ (X: Fe, Co, and Ni), a family of metal dihalides, using the first-principles calculations. The ground state, which can be ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, or spiral state, was specified by a wavevector in the primitive unit cell. While the ground state of FeI$_{2}$ is ferromagnetic, the spiral state becomes the ground state for CoI$_{2}$ and NiI$_{2}$. Since the multiferroic behavior in the metal dihalide can be preserved by the spiral structure, we believe that CoI…
The discovery of quantum oscillations in the normal-state electrical resistivity of YBa2Cu3O6.5 provides the first evidence for the existence of Fermi surface (FS) pockets in an underdoped cuprate. However, the pockets' electron vs. hole character, and the very interpretation in terms of closed FS contours, are the subject of considerable debate. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), with its ability to probe electronic dispersion as well as the FS, is ideally suited to address this issue. Unfortunately, the ARPES study of YBa2C3O7-d (YBCO) has been hampered by the technique's sur…
Fabricating complex transition metal oxides with a tuneable band gap without compromising their intriguing physical properties is a longstanding challenge. Here we examine the layered ferroelectric bismuth titanate and demonstrate that, by site-specific substitution with the Mott insulator lanthanum cobaltite, its band gap can be narrowed as much as one electron volt, while remaining strongly ferroelectric. We find that when a specific site in the host material is preferentially substituted, a split-off state responsible for the band gap reduction is created just below the conduction band of b…
Ab-initio spin-polarized Density Functional Theory plus U is used to study the electronic and magnetic properties of tetragonal doped barium titanate (Ba$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$O$_3$) system for different europium (Eu$^{3+}$) concentrations. For this study, the Projector Augmented Wave (PAW) method and a Perdew-Zunger (LSDA) approximation, which has been used for the exchange correlation energy, have been considered taking into account a supercell model. In this model, the spin polarization as well as the Hubbard's potential have been used for the correction of the electron-electron Coulomb interactions…
One of the major puzzles in condensed matter physics has been the observation of a Mott-insulating state away from half-filling. The filling-controlled Mott insulator-metal transition, induced via charge-carrier doping, has been extensively researched, but its governing mechanisms have yet to be fully understood. Several theoretical proposals aimed to elucidate the nature of the transition have been put forth, a notable one being phase separation and an associated percolation-induced transition. In the present work, we study the prototypical doped Mott-insulating rare-earth titanate YTiO$_3$, …
Magnetic topological semimetals have attracted intense attention recently since these materials carry a great promise for potential applications in novel spintronic devices. Here, we report an intimate interplay between lattice, Eu magnetic order and topological semimetallic behavior in Eu$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnSb$_{2}$ driven by nonmagnetic Sr doping on magnetic Eu site. Different types of Eu spin reorientations are controllable by the Sr concentration, temperature or magnetic field, and coupled to the quantum transport properties of Dirac fermions generated by the 2D Sb layers. Our study opens a …
The emergence of ferromagnetism in two-dimensional van der Waals materials has aroused broad interest. However, the ferromagnetic instability has been a problem remained. In this work, by using the first-principles calculations, we identified the critical ranges of strain and doping for the bilayer Cr2Ge2Te6 within which the ferromagnetic stability can be enhanced. Beyond the critical range, the tensile strain can induce the phase transition from the ferromagnetic to the antiferromagnetic, and the direction of magnetic easy axis can be converted from out-of-plane to in-plane due to the increas…

The origin of the gap in NiS2 as well as the pressure- and doping-induced metal-insulator transition in the NiS2-xSex solid solutions are investigated both theoretically using the first-principles band structures combined with the dynamical mean-field approximation for the electronic correlations and experimentally by means of infrared and x-ray absorption spectroscopies. The bonding-antibonding splitting in the S-S (Se-Se) dimer is identified as the main parameter controlling the size of the charge gap. The implications for the metal-insulator transition driven by pressure and Se doping are d…
Emergent superconductivity is strongly correlated with the symmetry of local atomic configuration in the parent compounds of iron-based superconductors. While chemical doping or hydrostatic pressure can change the local geometry, these conventional approaches do not provide a clear pathway in tuning the detailed atomic arrangement predictably, due to the parent compounds complicated structural deformation in the presence of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition. Here, we demonstrate a systematic approach to manipulate the local structural configurations in BaFe2As2 epitaxial thin fil…
Understanding the controlling principles of band gaps trends in d electron perovskites is needed both for gauging metal-insulator transitions, as well as their application in catalysis and doping. The magnitude of this band gap is rather different for different magnetic spin configurations. We find via electronic structure theory that the factors that connect gapping magnitudes to magnetism depend on the nature of the band edge orbital character (BEOC) and surprisingly scale with the number of antiferromagnetic contacts z$_i$ between neighboring transition metal ions. The dependence is weak wh…
