Very recently, a bond-additive topological descriptor, known as the Mostar index, has been proposed as a measure of peripherality in graphs and networks. In this article, we compute the Mostar index of corona product, Cartesian product, join, lexicographic product, Indu-Bala product and subdivision vertex-edge join of graphs and apply these results to find the Mostar index of various classes of chemical graphs and nanostructures.
The Mostar index of a graph was defined by Došlić, Martinjak, Škrekovski, Tipurić Spužević and Zubac in the context of the study of the properties of chemical graphs. It measures how far a given graph is from being distance-balanced. In this paper, we determine the Mostar index of two well-known families of graphs: Fibonacci cubes and Lucas cubes.
Daisy cubes are a class of isometric subgraphs of the hypercubes Q n. Daisy cubes include some previously well known families of graphs like Fibonacci cubes and Lucas cubes. Moreover they appear in chemical graph theory. Two distance invariants, Wiener and Mostar indices, have been introduced in the context of the mathematical chemistry. The Wiener index W (G) is the sum of distance between all unordered pairs of vertices of a graph G. The Mostar index Mo(G) is a measure of how far G is from being distance balanced. In this paper we establish that the Wiener and the Mostar indices of a daisy c…
Recently, a bond-additive topological descriptor, named as the Mostar index, has been introduced as a measure of peripherality in networks. For a connected graph $G$, the Mostar index is defined as $Mo(G) = \sum_{e=uv \in E(G)} |n_u(e) - n_v(e)|$, where for an edge $e=uv$ we denote by $n_u(e)$ the number of vertices of $G$ that are closer to $u$ than to $v$ and by $n_v(e)$ the number of vertices of $G$ that are closer to $v$ than to $u$. In this paper, we generalize the definition of the Mostar index to weighted graphs and prove that the Mostar index of a weighted graph can be computed in term…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and $e=uv\in E$. Define $n_u(e,G)$ be the number of vertices of $G$ closer to $u$ than to $v$. The number $n_v(e,G)$ can be defined in an analogous way. The Mostar index of $G$ is a new graph invariant defined as $Mo(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}|n_u(uv,G)-n_v(uv,G)|$. The edge version of Mostar index is defined as $Mo_e(G)=\sum_{e=uv\in E(G)} |m_u(e|G)-m_v(G|e)|$, where $m_u(e|G)$ and $m_v(e|G)$ are the number of edges of $G$ lying closer to vertex $u$ than to vertex $v$ and the number of edges of $G$ lying closer to vertex $v$ than to vertex $u$, respectively. Let $G$ be a co…
Došlić et al.~defined the Mostar index of a graph $G$ as $\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}|n_G(u,v)-n_G(v,u)|$, where, for an edge $uv$ of $G$, the term $n_G(u,v)$ denotes the number of vertices of $G$ that have a smaller distance in $G$ to $u$ than to $v$. Contributing to conjectures posed by Došlić et al., we show that the Mostar index of bipartite graphs of order $n$ is at most $\frac{\sqrt{3}}{18}n^3$, and that the Mostar index of split graphs of order $n$ is at most $\frac{4}{27}n^3$.
Došlić et al. defined the Mostar index of a graph $G$ as $Mo(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}|n_G(u,v)-n_G(v,u)|$, where, for an edge $uv$ of $G$, the term $n_G(u,v)$ denotes the number of vertices of $G$ that have a smaller distance in $G$ to $u$ than to $v$. They conjectured that $Mo(G)\leq 0.\overline{148}n^3$ for every graph $G$ of order $n$. As a natural upper bound on the Mostar index, Geneson and Tsai implicitly consider the parameter $Mo^\star(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}\big(n-\min\{ d_G(u),d_G(v)\}\big)$. For a graph $G$ of order $n$, they show that $Mo^\star(G)\leq \frac{5}{24}(1+o(1))n^3…
We investigate several related measures of peripherality and centrality for vertices and edges in networks, including the Mostar index which was recently introduced as a measure of peripherality for both edges and networks. We refute a conjecture on the maximum possible Mostar index of bipartite graphs from (Došlić et al, Journal of Mathematical Chemistry, 2018) and (Ali and Došlić, Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2021). We also correct a result from the latter paper, where they claimed that the maximum possible value of the terminal Mostar index among all trees of order $n$ is $(n-1)(n-2…
In this paper we give new bounds for a several vertex-based and edge-based topological indices of graphs: Albertson irregularity index, degree variance index, Mostar and the first Zagreb index. Moreover, we give a new upper bound for the energy of graphs through IRB-index. Most of our results rely on a well-known characterization of the Laplacian spectral radius.
The F-index of a graph is defined as the sum of cubes of the vertex degrees of the graph. This was introduced in 1972, in the same paper where the first and second Zagreb indices were introduced to study the structure-dependency of total $π$-electron energy. But this topological index was not further studied till then. Very recently, Furtula and Gutman [B. Furtula, I. Gutman, A forgotten topological index, J. Math. Chem., 53(4)(2015) 1184--1190.] reinvestigated the index and named it "forgotten topological index" or "F-index". In that paper, they present some basic properties of this index and…
An integer additive set-indexer is defined as an injective function $f:V(G)\rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}_0}$ such that the induced function $g_f:E(G) \rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}_0}$ defined by $g_f (uv) = f(u)+ f(v)$ is also injective, where $f(u)+f(v)$ is the sum set of $f(u)$ and $f(v)$ and $\mathbb{N}_0$ is the set of all non-negative integers. If $g_f(uv)=k \forall uv\in E(G)$, then $f$ is said to be a $k$-uniform integer additive set-indexers. An integer additive set-indexer $f$ is said to be a weak integer additive set-indexer if $|g_f(uv)|=max(|f(u)|,|f(v)|) \forall uv\in E(G)$. A weak intege…
The leap eccentric connectivity index of $G$ is defined as $$Lξ^{C}(G)=\sum_{v\in V(G)}d_{2}(v|G)e(v|G)$$ where $d_{2}(v|G) $ be the second degree of the vertex $v$ and $e(v|G)$ be the eccentricity of the vertex $v$ in $G$. In this paper, we first give a counterexample for that if $G$ be a graph and $S(G)$ be its the subdivision graph, then each vertex $v\in V(G)$, $e(v|S(G))=2e(v|G)$ by Yarahmadi in \cite{yar14} in Theorem 3.1. And we describe the upper and lower bounds of the leap eccentric connectivity index of four graphs based on subdivision edges, and then give the expressions of the lea…
A tree $T$, in an edge-colored graph $G$, is called {\em a rainbow tree} if no two edges of $T$ are assigned the same color. A {\em $k$-rainbow coloring}of $G$ is an edge coloring of $G$ having the property that for every set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exists a rainbow tree $T$ in $G$ such that $S\subseteq V(T)$. The minimum number of colors needed in a $k$-rainbow coloring of $G$ is the {\em $k$-rainbow index of $G$}, denoted by $rx_k(G)$. Graph operations, both binary and unary, are an interesting subject, which can be used to understand structures of graphs. In this paper, we will st…
The distinguishing number (index) $D(G)$ ($D'(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has an vertex labeling (edge labeling) with $d$ labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. We examine the effects on $D(G)$ and $D'(G)$ when $G$ is modified by operations on vertex and edge of $G$. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n\geq 3$. We show that $-1\leq D(G-v)-D(G)\leq D(G)$, where $G-v$ denotes the graph obtained from $G$ by removal of a vertex $v$ and all edges incident to $v$ and these inequalities are true for the distinguishing index. Also we prove that $|D(…
An integer additive set-indexer is an injective function $f:V(G)\to 2^{\mathbb{N}_0}$ such that the induced function $g_f:E(G) \to 2^{\mathbb{N}_0}$ defined by $g_f (uv) = f(u)+ f(v)$ is also injective. A graph $G$ which admits an IASI is called an IASI graph. An arithmetic integer additive set-indexer is an integer additive set-indexer $f$, under which the set-labels of all elements of a given graph $G$ are arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we discuss about admissibility of arithmetic integer additive set-indexers by certain graph operations and certain products of graphs.
The authors Mili$\breve{c}$evi$\acute{c}$ et al. introduced the reformulated Zagreb indices, which is a generalization of classical Zagreb indices of chemical graph theory. In the paper, we characterize the extremal properties of the first reformulated Zagreb index. We first introduce some graph operations which increase or decrease this index. Furthermore, we will determine the extremal tricyclic graphs with minimum and maximum the first Zagreb index by these graph operations.
The connective eccentric index of a graph is a topological index involving degrees and eccentricities of vertices of the graph. In this paper, we have studied the connective eccentric index for double graph and double cover. Also we give the connective eccentric index for some graph operations such as joins, symmetric difference, disjunction and splice of graphs.
In this paper, we investigate how the Wiener index of unicyclic graphs varies with graph operations. These results are used to present a sharp lower bound for the Wiener index of unicyclic graphs of order $n$ with girth and the matching number $β\ge \frac{3g}{2}$. Moreover, we characterize all extremal graphs which attain the lower bound.
The forgotten topological index or F-index of a graph is defined as the sum of degree cube of all the vertices of the graph. This index was introduced by Gutman and Trinajestić more than 40 years ago. In this paper, we derive F-index of new operations of subdivision graphs related to the graphs join.
The forgotten topological index or F-index of a graph is defined as the sum of cubes of the degree of all the vertices of the graph. In this paper we study the F-index of four operations related to the lexicographic product on graphs which were introduced by Sarala et al. [D. Sarala, H. Deng, S.K. Ayyaswamya and S. Balachandrana, The Zagreb indices of graphs based on four new operations related to the lexicographic product, \textit{Applied Mathematics and Computation}, 309 (2017) 156--169.].
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite simple graph. The Sombor index $SO(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d_u^2+d_v^2}$, where $d_u$ is the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In this paper, we study this index for certain graphs and we examine the effects on $SO(G)$ when $G$ is modified by operations on vertex and edge of $G$. Also we present bounds for the Sombor index of join and corona product of two graphs.
In the present paper we consider biologically motivated reduction operations on double occurrence words. Then we define the nesting index of a double occurrence word to be the least number of reduction operations it takes for a word to be reduced to the empty word. We use chord diagrams and circle graphs as tools to study the nesting index of double occurrence words.
Recently in 2021, Gutman introduced the Sombor index of a graph, a novel degree-based topological index. It has been shown that the Sombor index efficiently models the thermodynamic properties of chemical compounds. Assume $\mathbb{B}_n^k$ (resp. $\mathbb{V}_n^k$) comprises all graphs with order $n$ having number of bridges (resp. vertex-connectivity) $k$. Horoldagva & Xu (2021) characterized graphs achieving the maximum Sombor index of graphs in $\mathbb{B}_n^k$. This paper characterizes graphs achieving the minimum Sombor index in $\mathbb{B}_n^k$. Certain auxiliary operation on graphs in $\…
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with the vertex set $V(G)$ and $d_{B}^2(u,v)$ be the biharmonic distance between two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The biharmonic index $BH(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $$BH(G)=\frac{1}{2}\sum\limits_{u\in V(G)}\sum\limits_{v\in V(G)}d_{B}^2(u,v)=n\sum\limits_{i=2}^{n}\frac{1}{λ_i^2(G)},$$ where $λ_i(G)$ is the $i$-th smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of $G$ with $n$ vertices. In this paper, we provide the mathematical relationships between the biharmonic index and some classic topological indices: the first Zagreb index, the forgotten topological index…
Topological indices are molecular descriptors that describe the properties of chemical compounds. These topological indices correlate specific physico-chemical properties like boiling point, enthalpy of vaporization, strain energy, and stability of chemical compounds. This article introduces a new graph operation based on central graph called central vertex-edge join and provides its results related to graph invariants like eccentric-connectivity index, connective eccentricity index, total-eccentricity index, average eccentricity index, Zagreb eccentricity indices, eccentric geometric-arithmet…
In this paper, we introduce central vertex corona, central edge corona, and central edge neighborhood corona of graphs using central graph. Also, we determine their adjacency spectrum, Laplacian spectrum and signless Laplacian spectrum. From our results, it is possible to obtain infinitely many pairs of adjacency (respectively, Laplacian and signless Laplacian) cospectral graphs. As an application, we calculate the number of spanning trees and the Kirchhoff index of the resulting graphs.
An operation on species corresponding to the inner plethysm of their associated cycle index series is constructed. This operation, the inner plethysm of species, is generalized to n-sorted species. Polynomial maps on species are studied and used to extend inner plethysm and other operations to virtual species. Finally, inner plethysm and other operations on species are applied to various problems in graph theory. In particular, regular graphs, and digraphs in which every vertex has outdegree k, are enumerated.
Motivated by the recently introduced topological index, the Somber index, we define a new topological index of a graph in this paper, we call it Sombor coindex. The Sombor coindex is defined by considering analogous contributions from the pairs of non-adjacent vertices, capturing, thus, and quantifying a possible influence of remote pairs of vertices. We give several properties of the Somber coindex and its relations to the Sombor index, the Zagreb (co)indices, forgotten coindex and other important graph parameters. We also compute the bounds of the Somber coindex of some graph operations and …
An integer additive set-indexer is defined as an injective function $f:V(G)\rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}_0}$ such that the induced function $g_f:E(G) \rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}_0}$ defined by $g_f (uv) = f(u)+ f(v)$ is also injective, where $f(u)+f(v)$ is the sumset of $f(u)$ and $f(v)$. We have some characteristics of the graphs which admit weak integer addit…
