We introduce a quasi-probability phase space distribution with two pairs of azimuthal-angular coordinates. This representation is well adapted to describe quantum systems with discrete symmetry. Quantum error correction of states encoded in continuous variables using translationally invariant states is studied as an example of application. We also propose an experimental scheme for measuring such new distribution.
We derive simple formulas connecting the generalized Wigner functions for $s$-ordering with the density matrix, and vice-versa. These formulas proved very useful for quantum mechanical applications, as, for example, for connecting master equations with Fokker-Planck equations, or for evaluating the quantum state from Monte Carlo simulations of Fokker-Planck equations, and finally for studying positivity of the generalized Wigner functions in the complex plane.
Given a microscopic lattice Hamiltonian for a topologically ordered phase, we describe a tensor network approach to characterize its emergent anyon model and, in a chiral phase, also its gapless edge theory. First, a tensor network representation of a complete, orthonormal set of ground states on a cylinder of infinite length and finite width is obtained through numerical optimization. Each of these ground states is argued to have a different anyonic flux threading through the cylinder. In a chiral phase, the entanglement spectrum of each ground state is seen to reveal a different sector of th…
Wigner functions play a central role in the phase space formulation of quantum mechanics. Although closely related to classical Liouville densities, Wigner functions are not positive definite and may take negative values on subregions of phase space. We investigate the accumulation of these negative values by studying bounds on the integral of an arbitrary Wigner function over noncompact subregions of the phase plane with hyperbolic boundaries. We show using symmetry techniques that this problem reduces to computing the bounds on the spectrum associated with an exactly-solvable eigenvalue prob…
Recently, it is shown that the extended phase space formulation of quantum mechanics is a suitable technique for studying the quantum dissipative system. Here, as an application of this formalism, we consider a dissipative system of charged particles interacting with an external time dependent electric field. Such a system has been investigating by Buch and Denman, and two solutions with completely different structure have been obtained for Schrödinger's equation in two different gauges. We demonstrate how both gauges lead to the same conductivity by generalizing the gauge transformations to t…
Using operators' Weyl ordering expansion formula (Hong-yi Fan,\emph{\}J. Phys. A 25 (1992) 3443) we find new two-fold integration transformation about the Wigner operator $Δ(q',p')$ ($q$-number transform) in phase space quantum mechanics, \[ \iint_{-\infty}^\infty dp' dq'/πΔ(q',p') e^{-2i(p-p') (q-q')} =δ(p-P) δ(q-Q), \] and its inverse \[\iint_{-\infty}^\infty dq dp δ(p-P) δ(q-Q) e^{2i(p-p') (q-q')}=Δ(q',p'), \] where $Q,$ $P$ are the coordinate and momentum operators, respectively. We apply it to studying mutual converting formulas among $Q-P$ ordering, $P-Q$ ordering and Weyl ordering of op…
For the first time we introduce the Husimi operator Delta_h(gamma,varepsilon;kappa) for studying Husimi distribution in phase space(gamma, varepsilon) for electron's states in uniform magnetic field, where kappa is the Gaussian spatial width parameter. Using the Wigner operator in the entangled state |lambda> representation [Hong-Yi Fan, Phys. Lett. A 301 (2002)153; A 126 (1987) 145) we find that Delta_h(gamma,varepsilon;kappa) is just a pure squeezed coherent state density operator |gamma,varepsilon>_kappa kappa<gamma, varepsilon|, which brings convenience for studying and calculating the Husim…
We present a phase space study of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry based on the Wigner distribution function. For an arbitrary complex potential, we derive a generalized continuity equation for the Wigner function flow and calculate the related circulation values. Studying vicinity of an exceptional point, we show that a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase transition from an unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry phase to a broken one is a second-order phase transition.
Covariant integral quantizations are based on the resolution of the identity by continuous or discrete families of normalised positive operator valued measures (POVM), which have appealing probabilistic content and which transform in a covariant way. One of their advantages is to allow to circumvent problems due to the presence of singularities in the classical models. In this paper we implement covariant integral quantizations for systems whose phase space is $\mathbb{Z}\times\,\mathbb{S}^1$, i.e., for systems moving on the circle. The symmetry group of this phase space is the discrete \& com…
In this paper, ordinary and amplitude-squared squeezing as well as Wigner functions of single-photon-added coherent state after postselected von Neumann measurements are investigated. The analytical results show that the von Neumann type measurement which is characterized by post-selection and weak value can significantly change the squeezing feature of single-photon-added coherent state. It is also found that the postselected measurement can increase the nonclassicality of the original state in strong measurement regimes. It is anticipated that this work could may provide an alternate and eff…
We present direct measurement of Kirkwood-Rihaczek (KR) distribution for spatial properties of coherent light beam in terms of position and momentum (angle) coordinates. We employ a two-local oscillator (LO) balanced heterodyne detection (BHD) to simultaneously extract distribution of transverse position and momentum of a light beam. The two-LO BHD could measure KR distribution for any complex wave field (including quantum mechanical wave function) without applying tomography methods (inverse Radon transformation). Transformation of KR distribution to Wigner, Glauber Sudarshan P- and Husimi or…
Detection and characterization of a different type of topological excitations, namely the domain wall (DW) skyrmion, has received increasing attention because the DW is ubiquitous from condensed matter to particle physics and cosmology. Here we present experimental evidence for the DW skyrmion as the ground state stabilized by long-range Coulomb interactions in a quantum Hall ferromagnet. We develop an alternative approach using nonlocal resistance measurements together with a local NMR probe to measure the effect of low-current-induced dynamic nuclear polarization and thus to characterize the…
We examine the quantum states produced through parametric amplification with internal quantum noise. The internal diffusion arises by coupling both modes of light to a reservoir for the duration of the interaction time. The Wigner function for the diffused two-mode squeezed state is calculated. The nonlocality, separability, and purity of these quantum states of light are discussed. In addition, we conclude by studying the nonlocality of two other continuous variable states: the Werner state and the phase-diffused state for two light modes.
By means of studying the evolution equation for the Wigner distributions of quantum dissipative systems we derive the quantum corrections to the classical Liouville dynamics, taking into account the standard quantum friction model. The resulting evolution turns out to be the classical one plus fluctuations that depend not only on the $\hbar$ size but also on the momentum and the dissipation parameter (i.e. the coupling with the environment). On the other hand, we extend our studies of a paradigmatic system based on the kicked rotator, and we confirm that by adding fluctuations only depending o…
A quantum phase space with Wannier basis is constructed: (i) classical phase space is divided into Planck cells; (ii) a complete set of Wannier functions are constructed with the combination of Kohn's method and Löwdin method such that each Wannier function is localized at a Planck cell. With these Wannier functions one can map a wave function unitarily onto phase space. Various examples are used to illustrate our method and compare it to Wigner function. The advantage of our method is that it can smooth out the oscillations in wave functions without losing any information and is potentially a…
Weak values are average quantities, therefore investigating their associated variance is crucial in understanding their place in quantum mechanics. We develop the concept of a position-postselected weak variance of momentum as cohesively as possible, building primarily on material from Moyal (Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1949) and Sonego (Found Phys 21(10):1135, 1991) . The weak variance is defined in terms of the Wigner function, using a standard construction from probability theory. We show this corresponds to a measur…
This paper aims to explore the inherent connection among Heisenberg groups, quantum Fourier transform and (quasiprobability) distribution functions. Distribution functions for continuous and finite quantum systems are examined first as a semiclassical approach to quantum probability distribution. This leads to studying certain functionals of a pair of "conjugate" observables, connected via the quantum Fourier transform. The Heisenberg groups emerge naturally from this study and we take a rapid look at their representations. The quantum Fourier transform appears as the intertwining operator of …
Quantum nonlocality is revisited from a novel point of view by studying the problem of an originally classical particle immersed in the stochastic zero-point radiation field (zpf). The entire system is left to evolve until it reaches a state in which the radiative terms cancel each other in the mean in a first approximation. The ensuing approximate statistical description reduced to the particle's configuration space contains a nonclassical term due to the dispersion of the momentum, which depends on the density of particles ρ(x) and thus is nonlocal. This description is shown to be equivalent…
The problem of interacting bosons in frustrated lattices is an intricate one due to the absence of a unique minimum in the single-particle dispersion where macroscopic number of bosons can condense. Here we consider a family of tight-binding models with macroscopically degenerate lowest energy band, separated from other bands by a gap. We predict the formation of exotic states that spontaneously break rotational symmetry at relatively low filling. These states belong to three nematic phases: Wigner crystal, supersolid, and superfluid. The Wigner crystal phase is established exactly at low fill…
The quantum state of a light beam can be represented as an infinite dimensional density matrix or equivalently as a density on the plane called the Wigner function. We describe quantum tomography as an inverse statistical problem in which the state is the unknown parameter and the data is given by results of measurements performed on identical quantum systems. We present consistency results for Pattern Function Projection Estimators as well as for Sieve Maximum Likelihood Estimators for both the density matrix of the quantum state and its Wigner function. Finally we illustrate via simulated da…
We revisit the fundamental notion of continuity in representation theory, with special attention to the study of quantum physics. After studying the main theorem in the context of representation theory, we draw attention to the significant aspect of continuity in the analytic foundations of Wigner work. We conclude the paper by reviewing the connection between continuity, the possibility of defining certain local groups, and their relation to projective representations.

The bi-partite Gaussian state, corresponding to an anisotropic harmonic oscillator in a noncommutative-space, is investigated with the help of the Simon's separability condition (generalized Peres-Horodecki criterion). It turns out that, in order to exhibit the entanglement between the noncommutative co-ordinates, the parameters (mass and frequency) have to satisfy an unique constraint equation. Exact solutions for the system are obtained after diagonalizing the model, keeping the intrinsic symplectic structure intact. It is shown that, the identification of the entangled degrees of freedom is…
