Occupation measures and linear matrix inequality (LMI) relax-ations (called the moment sums of squares or Lasserre hierarchy) have been used previously as a means for solving control law verification and validation (VV) problems. However, these methods have been restricted to relatively simple control laws and a limited number of states. In this document, we extend these methods to model reference adaptive control (MRAC) configurations typical of the aircraft industry. The main contribution is a validation scheme that exploits the specific nonlinearities and structure of MRAC. A nonlinear F-16 plant is used for illustration. LMI relaxations solved by off-the-shelf-software are compared to traditional Monte-Carlo simulations.
Occupation measures and linear matrix inequality (LMI) relax-ations (called the moment sums of squares or Lasserre hierarchy) are state-of-the-art methods for verification and validation (VV) in aerospace. In this document, we extend these results to a full F-16 closed-loop nonlinear dutch roll polynomial model complete with model reference adaptive control (MRAC). This is done through a new technique of approximating the reference trajectory by exploiting sparse ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with parsimony. The VV problem is then solved directly using moment LMI relaxations and off-t…
This paper proposes an adaptive human pilot model that is able to mimic the crossover model in the presence of uncertainties. The proposed structure is based on the model reference adaptive control, and the adaptive laws are obtained using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii stability criteria. The model can be employed for human-in-the-loop stability and performance analyses incorporating different types of controllers and plant types. For validation purposes, an experimental setup is employed to collect data and a statistical analysis is conducted to measure the predictive power of the pilot model.

Validation is a key challenge in the search for safe autonomy. Simulations are often either too simple to provide robust validation, or too complex to tractably compute. Therefore, approximate validation methods are needed to tractably find failures without unsafe simplifications. This paper presents the theory behind one such black-box approach: adaptive stress testing (AST). We also provide three examples of validation problems formulated to work with AST.

Determining possible failure scenarios is a critical step in the evaluation of autonomous vehicle systems. Real-world vehicle testing is commonly employed for autonomous vehicle validation, but the costs and time requirements are high. Consequently, simulation-driven methods such as Adaptive Stress Testing (AST) have been proposed to aid in validation. AST formulates the problem of finding the most likely failure scenarios as a Markov decision process, which can be solved using reinforcement learning. In practice, AST tends to find scenarios where failure is unavoidable and tends to repeatedly…
Neural networks have become state-of-the-art for computer vision problems because of their ability to efficiently model complex functions from large amounts of data. While neural networks can be shown to perform well empirically for a variety of tasks, their performance is difficult to guarantee. Neural network verification tools have been developed that can certify robustness with respect to a given input image; however, for neural network systems used in closed-loop controllers, robustness with respect to individual images does not address multi-step properties of the neural network controll…

During the development of autonomous systems such as driverless cars, it is important to characterize the scenarios that are most likely to result in failure. Adaptive Stress Testing (AST) provides a way to search for the most-likely failure scenario as a Markov decision process (MDP). Our previous work used a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) solver to identify likely failure scenarios. However, the solver's use of a feed-forward neural network with a discretized space of possible initial conditions poses two major problems. First, the system is not treated as a black box, in that it requires…
In this paper, a human-machine adaptive shared control method is proposed for automated vehicles (AVs) under automation performance degradation. First, a novel risk assessment module is proposed to monitor driving behavior and evaluate automation performance degradation for AVs. Then, an adaptive control authority allocation module is developed. In the event of any performance degradation detection, the allocated control authority of the automation system is decreased based on the assessed risk to reduce the potential risk of vehicle motion. Consequently, the control authority allocated to the…
