We present a new estimator for the cross-correlation signal between line intensity maps to probe the Epoch of Reionization. The proposed estimator is the hitherto neglected antisymmetric component of the cross-correlation, under the exchange of line-of-sight positions. We consider the cross-correlation between HI and CO fluctuations, and forecast the improvement in precision on reionization parameters when the antisymmetric contribution is accounted for. As a way to break the degeneracy between astrophysics and cosmology in the intensity mapping power spectrum, we study the ratio between the antisymmetric and symmetric components. While our results depend on the highly uncertain astrophysical modelling, we show that in most standard scenarios including the antisymmetric contribution as a complementary probe can lead to a significant gain in information.
Intensity mapping of the H I 21 cm line and the CO 2.61 mm line from the epoch of reionization has emerged as powerful, complementary, probes of the high-redshift Universe. However, both maps and their cross-correlation are dominated by foregrounds. We propose a new analysis by which the signal is unbiased by foregrounds, i.e. it can be measured without foreground mitigation. We construct the antisymmetric part of two-point cross-correlation between intensity maps of the H I 21 cm line and the CO 2.61 mm line, arising because the statistical fluctuations of two fields have different evolution …
Foreground contamination in Ly-alpha intensity mapping during the epoch of reionization

We discuss the prospects of using the redshifted 21~cm emission from neutral hydrogen in the post-reionization epoch to study our universe. The main aim of the article is to highlight the efforts of Indian scientists in this area with the SKA in mind. It turns out that the intensity mapping surveys from SKA can be instrumental in obtaining tighter constraints on the dark energy models. Cross-correlation of the HI intensity maps with the Ly$α$ forest data can also be useful in measuring the BAO scale.
We propose the intensity mapping of the redshifted HI 21-cm signal from the post-reionization epoch as a cosmological probe of $f(R)$ gravity. We consider the Hu-Sawicki class of $f(R)$ gravity models characterized by a single parameter $f_{,R0}$. The $f(R)$ modification to gravity affects the post-reionization $21$-cm power spectrum through the change in the growth rate of density fluctuations. We find that a radio interferometric observation with a SKA1-Mid like radio telescope in both auto-correlation and cross-correlation with galaxy weak-lensing and Ly-$α$ forest may distinguish $f(R)$ mo…
Line Intensity Mapping Prediction from the Cosmic Dawn (CoDa) III Simulation for H$α$ from Galaxies and the Intergalactic Medium during the Epoch of Reionization
We combine recent simulation work on the SFR--[C II] correlation at high redshift with empirical modeling of the galaxy--halo connection (via UniverseMachine) to forecast [C II] auto power spectra from $z\sim4$ to $z\sim8$. We compare these to sensitivities realistically expected from various instruments expected to come on-line in the next decade. If the predictions of our model are correct, [C II] should be detectable up to $z\sim6$ in this generation of surveys, but detecting [C II] past the end of reionization will require a generational leap in line-intensity survey capabilities.
We present the first simulations of the high-redshift Ly$α$ intensity field that account for scattering in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Using a 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, we find that Ly$α$ scattering smooths spatial fluctuations in the Ly$α$ intensity on small scales and that the spatial dependence of this smoothing depends strongly on the mean neutral fraction of the IGM. Our simulations find a strong effect of reionization on $k=0.1-1~{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$, with $P_{\rm Lyα}\propto k^{-1.75}$ for $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = 0.63$ and $P_{\rm Lyα} \propto k^{-2.2}$ for $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = …
We combine available constraints on the local CII 158 $μ$m line luminosity function from galaxy observations (Hemmati et al. 2017), with the evolution of the star-formation rate density and the recent CII intensity mapping measurement in Pullen et al. (2018, assuming detection), to derive the evolution of the CII luminosity - halo mass relation over $z \sim 0-6$. We develop convenient fitting forms for the evolution of the CII luminosity - halo mass relation, and forecast constraints on the CII intensity mapping power spectrum and its associated uncertainty across redshifts. We predict the sen…
Intensity mapping of the HI 21 cm line and the CO 2.61 mm line from the epoch of reionization has emerged as powerful, complementary, probes of the high-redshift Universe. However, both maps and their cross-correlation are dominated by foregrounds. We propose a new analysis by which the signal is unbiased by foregrounds, i.e. it can be measured without foreground mitigation. We construct the antisymmetric part of the HI-CO cross-correlation, arising because the statistical fluctuations of two fields have different evolution in time. We show that the sign of this new signal can distinguish mode…
The local intensity of the 21 cm signal emitted during the Epoch of Reionization that will be mapped by the SKA is modulated by the amount of neutral hydrogen. Consequently, understanding the process of reionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM) is crucial for predicting and interpreting the upcoming observations. After presenting the basic physics and most meaningful quantities pertaining to the process of reionization, we will review recent progress in our understanding of the production and escape of ionizing photons in primordial galaxies and of their absorption in the IGM especially i…
We investigate the cross-correlation signal between 21cm intensity mapping maps and the Lyman-alpha forest in the fully non-linear regime using state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations. The cross-correlation signal between these fields can provide a coherent and comprehensive picture of the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of our Universe in the post-reionization era, probing both its mass content and volume distribution. We compute the auto-power spectra of both fields together with their cross-power spectrum at z = 2.4 and find that on large scales the fields are completely anti-correlated. Th…
Line intensity mapping (LIM) is rapidly emerging as a powerful technique to study galaxy formation and cosmology in the high-redshift Universe. We present LIM estimates of select spectral lines originating from the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies and 21 cm emission from neutral hydrogen gas in the Universe using the large volume, high resolution THESAN reionization simulations. A combination of sub-resolution photo-ionization modelling for HII regions and Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations is employed to estimate the dust-attenuated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of high-r…
CII line intensity mapping (LIM) is a potential technique to probe the early galaxies from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Several experiments e.g. CONCERTO, TIME, CCAT-p are underway to map the CII LIM signal fluctuations from the EoR, enabling us to estimate the CII power-spectrum and CII$\times$21-cm cross-power spectrum. Observed LIM signal will have its time evolution embedded in it along the Line of Sight (LoS) due to the finite travel time of the signal from its origin to the observer. We have investigated this so-called light-cone effect on the observed statistics of our semi-numerica…
We forecast the ability of future-generation experiments to detect the fine-structure lines of the carbon and oxygen ions, [CII] and [OIII] in intensity mapping (IM) from the Epoch of Reionization ($z \sim 6-8$). Combining the latest empirically derived constraints relating the luminosity of the [OIII] line to the ambient star-formation rate, and using them in conjunction with previously derived estimates for the abundance of [CII] in haloes, we predict the expected auto-correlation IM signal to be observed using new experiments based on the Fred Young Submillimetre Telescope (FYST) and the ba…
We model the distribution of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the post-reionization era and investigate its detectability in 21 cm intensity mapping with the future SKA radio telescope. We rely on high resolution hydrodynamical N-body simulations. The HI is assigned a-posteriori to the gas particles following two different approaches: a halo-based method in which HI is assigned only to gas particles residing within dark matter halos; a particle-based method that assigns HI to all gas particles using a prescription based on the physical properties of the particles. The HI statistical properties are the…
Intensity mapping of multiple emission lines is emerging as a new branch to astronomy, to probe both properties of ionizing sources and the medium between, in particular the intergalactic medium. For Epoch of Reionization (EoR) studies, both multi-line experiments and analysis methods are still in their infancy. Here we explore optimal survey parameters for Ly$α$ (and H$α$) intensity mapping up to high redshifts of reionization, and requirements for optimised synergy with 21cm experiments. We investigate line sensitivity, spectral resolution and detector pixel size requirements for optimal (hi…
Cosmic Dawn Intensity Mapper is a "Probe Class" mission concept for reionization studies of the universe. It will be capable of spectroscopic imaging observations between 0.7 to 6-7 microns in the near-Infrared. The primary observational objective is pioneering observations of spectral emission lines of interest throughout the cosmic history, but especially from the first generation of distant, faint galaxies when the universe was less than 800 million years old. With spectro-imaging capabilities, using a set of linear variable filters (LVFs), CDIM will produce a three-dimensional tomographic …
We investigate the possibility of performing cosmological studies in the redshift range $2.5<z<5$ through suitable extensions of existing and upcoming radio-telescopes like CHIME, HIRAX and FAST. We use the Fisher matrix technique to forecast the bounds that those instruments can place on the growth rate, the BAO distance scale parameters, the sum of the neutrino masses and the number of relativistic degrees of freedom at decoupling, $N_{\rm eff}$. We point out that quantities that depend on the amplitude of the 21cm power spectrum, like $fσ_8$, are completely degenerate with $Ω_{\rm HI}$ and …
A detection of the predicted anticorrelation between 21cm and either Ly-alpha or H-alpha from the Epoch of Reionization (EOR) would be a powerful probe of the first galaxies. While 3D intensity maps isolate foregrounds in low k_\parallel modes, infrared surveys cannot yet match the field of view and redshift resolution of radio intensity mapping experiments. In contrast, 2D (i.e., broad band) infrared intensity maps can be measured with current experiments and are limited by foregrounds instead of photon or thermal noise. We show 2D experiments can measure most of the 3D fluctuation power at k…
Measurements of the one-point probability distribution function and higher-order moments (variance, skewness, and kurtosis) of the high-redshift 21 cm fluctuations are among the most direct statistical probes of the non-Gaussian nature of structure formation and evolution during reionization. However, contamination from astrophysical foregrounds and instrument systematics pose significant challenges in measuring these statistics in real observations. In this work, we use forward modelling to investigate the feasibility of measuring 21 cm one-point statistics through a foreground avoidance stra…
Tomographic intensity mapping of the HI using the redshifted 21 cm observations opens up a new window towards our understanding of cosmological background evolution and structure formation. This is a key science goal of several upcoming radio telescopes including the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). In this article we focus on the post-reionization signal and investigate the of cross correlating the 21 cm signal with other tracers of the large scale structure. We consider the cross-correlation of the post-reionization 21 cm signal with the Lyman-alpha forest, Lyman-break galaxies and late time an…
We investigate the cross-correlation between the spatial distribution of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and the 21cm intensity mapping signal at $z\sim[3-5]$. At these redshifts, galactic feedback is supposed to only marginally affect the matter power spectrum, and the neutral hydrogen distribution is independently constrained by quasar spectra. Using a high resolution N-body simulation, populated with neutral hydrogen a posteriori, we forecast for the expected LBG-21cm cross-spectrum and its error for a 21cm field observed by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA1-LOW and SKA1-MID), combined with a sp…
We introduce COMAP-EoR, the next generation of the Carbon Monoxide Mapping Array Project aimed at extending CO intensity mapping to the Epoch of Reionization. COMAP-EoR supplements the existing 30 GHz COMAP Pathfinder with two additional 30 GHz instruments and a new 16 GHz receiver. This combination of frequencies will be able to simultaneously map CO(1--0) and CO(2--1) at reionization redshifts ($z\sim5-8$) in addition to providing a significant boost to the $z\sim3$ sensitivity of the Pathfinder. We examine a set of existing models of the EoR CO signal, and find power spectra spanning severa…
Observations of the high-redshift Universe using the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen and complimentary emission lines from the first galaxies promise to open a new door for our understanding of the epoch of reionization. We present predictions for the [C II] 158-micron line and H I 21 cm emission from redshifts z=6--9 using high-dynamic-range cosmological simulations combined with semi-analytical models. We find that the CONCERTO experiment should be able to detect the large scale power spectrum of [C II] emission to redshifts of up to z=8 (signal-to-noise ratio ~ 1 at k = 0.1 h/cMpc with 1500 …
The relative velocity between baryons and dark matter in the early Universe can suppress the formation of small-scale baryonic structure and leave an imprint on the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale at low redshifts after reionization. This "streaming velocity" affects the post-reionization gas distribution by directly reducing the abundance of pre-existing mini-halos ($\lesssim 10^7 M_{\bigodot}$) that could be destroyed by reionization and indirectly modulating reionization history via photoionization within these mini-halos. In this work, we investigate the effect of streaming velocit…
We study statistics of the 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization. We propose to use [OIII] line emitting galaxies to cross-correlate with the 21-cm signal from $z = 7 - 10$. To this aim, we employ simulations of reionization obtained post-processing the high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulation Massive Black-II with the three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer code CRASH to follow the propagation of ionizing photons from a variety of sources. We show that, during the early phases of reionization, the 21-cm signal is positively correlated with the spatial distribution of the […
Cross-correlating 21cm and Ly$α$ intensity maps of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) promises to be a powerful tool for exploring the properties of the first galaxies. Next-generation intensity mapping experiments such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) and SPHEREx will individually probe reionization through the power spectra of the 21cm and Ly$α$ lines respectively, but will be limited by bright foregrounds and instrumental systematics. Cross-correlating these measurements could reduce systematics, potentially tightening constraints on the inferred astrophysical parameters. In …
Line-Intensity Mapping is an emerging technique which promises new insights into the evolution of the Universe, from star formation at low redshifts to the epoch of reionization and cosmic dawn. It measures the integrated emission of atomic and molecular spectral lines from galaxies and the intergalactic medium over a broad range of frequencies, using instruments with aperture requirements that are greatly relaxed relative to surveys for single objects. A coordinated, comprehensive, multi-line intensity-mapping experimental effort can efficiently probe over 80% of the volume of the observable …
We present the science enabled by cross-correlations of the SKA1-LOW 21-cm EoR surveys with other line mapping programs. In particular, we identify and investigate potential synergies with planned programs, such as the line intensity mapping of redshifted CO rotational lines, [CII] and Ly-$α$ emissions during reionization. We briefly describe how these tracers of the star-formation rate at $z \sim 8$ can be modeled jointly before forecasting their auto- and cross-power spectra measurements with the nominal 21cm EoR survey. The use of multiple line tracers would be invaluable to validate and en…
We produce simulations of emission of the atomic CII line in large sky fields in order to determine the current prospects for mapping this line during the high redshift Epoch of Reionization. We estimate the CII line intensity, redshift evolution and spatial fluctuations using observational relations between CII emission and the SFR in a galaxy for the frequency range of 200 GHz to 300 GHz. We obtained a frequency averaged intensity of CII emission of ${\rm I_{\rm CII}=(4 \pm 2)\times10^{2}\, Jy\, \rm sr^{-1}}$ in the redshift range $z\, \sim\, 5.3\, -\, 8.5$. Observations of CII emission in t…
Detecting neutral Hydrogen (H\,{\sc i}) via the 21~cm line emission from the intergalactic medium at $z\gtrsim 6$ has been identified as one of the most promising probes of the epoch of cosmic reionization -- a major phase transition of the Universe. However, these studies face severe challenges imposed by the bright foreground emission from cosmic objects. Current techniques require precise instrumental calibration to separate the weak H\,{\sc i} line signal from the foreground continuum emission. We propose to mitigate this calibration requirement by using measurements of the interferometric…
