Les Houches Lectures on Effective Field Theories for Nuclear and (some) Atomic Physics

These lectures are a pedagogical -- not comprehensive -- introduction to the applications of effective field theory in the context of nuclear and atomic physics. A common feature of these applications is the interplay between nonperturbative physics (needed at leading order to produce nonrelativistic bound states and resonances) and controlled perturbative corrections (crucial for predictive power). The essential ideas are illustrated with the simplest nuclear EFT, Pionless EFT, which contains only contact interactions and, with minor changes, can be adapted to certain atomic systems. This EFT…

Les Houches Lectures on Indirect Detection of Dark Matter

These lectures, presented at the 2021 Les Houches Summer School on Dark Matter, provide an introduction to key methods and tools of indirect dark matter searches, as well as a status report on the field circa summer 2021. Topics covered include the possible effects of energy injection from dark matter on the early universe, methods to calculate both the expected energy distribution and spatial distribution of particles produced by dark matter interactions, an outline of theoretical models that predict diverse signals in indirect detection, and a discussion of current constraints and some claim…

Les Houches Lectures on Renormalization Theory and Effective Field Theories

These lectures review the formalism of renormalization in quantum field theories with special regard to effective quantum field theories. While renormalization theory is part of every advanced course on quantum field theory, for effective theories some more advanced topics become particularly important. This includes the renormalization of composite operators, operator mixing under scale evolution, and the resummation of large logarithms of scale ratios. This course thus sets the basis for many of the more specialized lecture courses delivered at the 2017 Les Houches Summer School.

Introduction to Effective Field Theories

Lecture notes from the 2017 Les Houches Summer School on Effective Field Theories. The lectures covered introductory material on EFTs as used in high energy physics to compute experimentally observable quantities. Other lectures at the school covered a wide range of applications in greater depth.

Aspects of Chern-Simons Theory

Lectures at the 1998 Les Houches Summer School: Topological Aspects of Low Dimensional Systems. These lectures contain an introduction to various aspects of Chern-Simons gauge theory: (i) basics of planar field theory, (ii) canonical quantization of Chern-Simons theory, (iii) Chern-Simons vortices, and (iv) radiatively induced Chern-Simons terms.

Braneworld graviton interactions in early universe phase transitions

These are proceedings for the Les Houches Summer School ``Particle Physics and Cosmology: the Fabric of Spacetime,'' held in Les Houches, France, July 31--August 25, 2006. We summarise the discussions of our working group and outline a procedure for calculating gravity corrections to scalar field potentials, as they might be relevant for inflationary physics. We focus on a specific Randall--Sundrum type braneworld scenario and discuss the relevance of Kaluza--Klein gravitons due to the extra warped dimension.
