It was found that spatially confined spin-orbit (SO) coupling, which can be induced by illuminating Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with a Gaussian laser beam, can help trap a spinor Bose gas in multi-dimensional space. Previous works on this topic were all based on a Boson gas featuring an attractive interaction. In this paper, we consider the trapping effect in the case in which the Boson gas features a repulsive interaction. After replacing the repulsive effect, stable excited modes of semi-vortex (SV) type and mixed-mode (MM) type, which cannot be created in a boson gas with attractive interactions, can be found in the current setting. The trapping ability and the capacity of the confined SO coupling versus the degree of the repulsive strength as well as the order of the excited mode are systematically discussed firstly through the paper. Moreover, the stability of the nonlinear mode trapped in this system with a moving reference frame is also discussed. Unlike the system with homogeneous SO coupling, two different types of stationary mobility modes can be stabilized when the SO coupling moves in the x- and y- directions, respectively. This finding indicates that the system with moving confined SO coupling features a typical anisotropic character that differs from the system with moving homogeneous SO coupling.
Formation of bright envelope solitons from wave packets with a repulsive nonlinearity was observed for the first time. The experiments used surface spin-wave packets in magnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film strips. When the wave packets are narrow and have low power, they undergo self-broadening during the propagation. When the wave packets are relatively wide or their power is relatively high, they can experience self-narrowing or even evolve into bright solitons. The experimental results were reproduced by numerical simulations based on a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation model.
The work is devoted to numerical investigation of stability of stationary localized modes ("gap solitons") for the one-dimentional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with periodic potential and repulsive nonlinearity. Two classes of the modes are considered: a bound state of a pair of in-phase and out-of-phase fundamental gap solitons (FGSs) from the first bandgap separated by various number of empty potential wells. Using the standard framework of linear stability analysis, we computed the linear spectra for the gap solitons by means of the Fourier collocation method and the Evans function…
We demonstrate the existence of two species of stable bright solitons, fundamental and dipole ones, in one-dimensional self-defocusing nonlocal media, with the local value of nonlinearity coefficient having one or several minima and growing at any rate faster than |x| at large values of coordinate x. The model can be derived for a slab optical waveguide with thermal nonlinearity. The most essential difference from the local counterpart of this system is the competition between two different spatial scales, the one determining the modulation pattern of the nonlinearity coefficient, and the corr…
We show that self-localized ground states can be created in the spin-balanced gas of fermions with repulsion between the spin components, whose strength grows from the center to periphery, in combination with the harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential acting in one or two transverse directions. We also consider the ground state in the non-interacting Fermi gas under the action of the spatially growing tightness of the one- or two-dimensional (1D or 2D) HO confinement. These settings are considered in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsacker (TF-vW) density functional. It is found …
We find that the recently introduced model of self-trapping supported by a spatially growing strength of a repulsive nonlinearity gives rise to robust vortex-soliton tori, i.e., three-dimensional vortex solitons, with topological charges S. The family with S=1 is completely stable, while the one with S=2 has alternating regions of stability and instability. The families are nearly exactly reproduced in an analytical form by the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA). Unstable states with S=2 and 3 split into persistently rotating pairs or triangles of unitary vortices. Application of a moderate torq…
We consider a binary Bose-Einstein condensate with linear and nonlinear interactions between its components, which emulate the spinor system with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings. For a relatively dense condensate, 1D coupled equations with the nonpolynomial nonlinearity of both repulsive and attractive signs are derived from the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Profiles of modes confined in an external potential under the action of the self-repulsion, and self-trapped solitons in the case of the self-attraction, are found in a numerical form and by means of analytical approximations. In the f…
Toroidal modes in the form of so-called Hopfions, with two independent winding numbers, a hidden one (twist, s), which characterizes a circular vortex thread embedded into a three-dimensional soliton, and the vorticity around the vertical axis m, appear in many fields, including the field theory, ferromagnetics, and semi- and superconductors. Such topological states are normally generated in multi-component systems, or as trapped quasi-linear modes in toroidal potentials. We uncover that stable solitons with this structure can be created, without any linear potential, in the single-component s…
We elaborate a method for the creation of two- and one-dimensional (2D and 1D) self-trapped modes in binary spin-orbit (SO)-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with the contact repulsive interaction, whose local strength grows fast enough from the center to periphery. In particular, an exact semi-vortex (SV) solution is found for the anti-Gaussian radial-modulation profile. The exact modes are included in the numerically produced family of SV solitons. Other families, in the form of mixed modes(MMs), as well as excited state of SVs and MMs, are produced too. While the excited states are u…
We analyze the formation and dynamics of bright unstaggered solitons in the disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, which features the interplay of contact (collisional) and long-range dipole-dipole (DD) interactions between atoms. The condensate is assumed to be trapped in a strong optical-lattice potential in the disk's plane, hence it may be approximated by a two-dimensional (2D) discrete model, which includes the on-site nonlinearity and cubic long-range (DD) interactions between sites of the lattice. We consider two such models, that differ by the form of the on-site nonlinearity, r…
We predict a variety of composite quiescent and spinning two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) self-trapped modes in media with a repulsive nonlinearity whose local strength grows from center to periphery. These are 2D dipoles and quadrupoles, and 3D octupoles, as well as vortex-antivortex pairs and quadruplets. Unlike other multidimensional models, where such complex bound states either do not exist or are subject to strong instabilities, these modes are remarkably robust in the present setting. The results are obtained by means of numerical methods and analytically, using the Thomas-Fermi a…
In this Letter, we provide experimental evidence of nonlinear wave propagation in a triangular lattice of repulsive magnets supported by an elastic foundation of thin pillars and we interpret all the individual features of the nonlinear wavefield through the lens of a phonon band calculation that precisely accounts for the inter-particle repulsive forces. We confirm the co-existence of two spectrally distinct components (homogeneous and forced) in the wave response that is induced via second harmonic generation (SHG), a well-known effect of quadratic nonlinearity (here embedded in the magnetic…
The quantum-mechanical collapse (alias fall onto the center of particles attracted by potential -1/r^2), or "quantum anomaly", is a well-known issue in the quantum theory. We demonstrate that the mean-field repulsive nonlinearity prevents the collapse and thus puts forward a solution to the quantum-anomaly problem different from that previously developed in the framework of the linear quantum-field theory. This solution may be realized in the 3D or 2D gas of dipolar bosons attracted by a central charge, and in the 2D gas of magnetic dipoles attracted by a current filament. In the 3D setting, t…
We investigate theoretically the interaction of dark solitons in materials with a spatially nonlocal nonlinearity. In particular we do this analytically and for arbitrary degree of nonlocality. We employ the variational technique to show that nonlocality induces an attractive force in the otherwise repulsive soliton interaction.
We introduce a setting based on the one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) with the self-focusing (SF) cubic term modulated by a singular function of the coordinate, |x|^{-a}. It may be additionally combined with the uniform self-defocusing (SDF) nonlinear background, and with a similar singular repulsive linear potential. The setting, which can be implemented in optics and BEC, aims to extend the general analysis of the existence and stability of solitons in NLSEs. Results for fundamental solitons are obtained analytically and verified numerically. The solitons feature a …
We consider a two-component linearly-coupled system with the intrinsic cubic nonlinearity and the harmonic-oscillator (HO) confining potential. The system models binary settings in BEC and optics. In the symmetric system, with the HO trap acting in both components, we consider Josephson oscillations (JO) initiated by an input in the form of the HO's ground state (GS) or dipole mode (DM), placed in one component. With the increase of the strength of the self-focusing nonlinearity, spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) between the components takes place in the dynamical JO state. Under still stron…
Nonlinearity shapes lattice dynamics affecting vibrational spectrum, transport and thermalization phenomena. Beside breathers and solitons one finds the third fundamental class of nonlinear modes -- $q$-breathers -- periodic orbits in nonlinear lattices, exponentially localized in the reciprocal mode space. To date, the studies of $q$-breathers have been confined to the cubic and quartic nonlinearity in the interaction potential. In this paper we study the case of arbitrary nonlinearity index $γ$ in an acoustic chain. We uncover qualitative difference in the scaling of delocalization and stabi…
Density-wave patterns in (quasi-) discrete media with local interactions are known to be unstable. We demonstrate that \emph{stable} double- and triple- period patterns (DPPs and TPPs), with respect to the period of the underlying lattice, exist in media with nonlocal nonlinearity. This is shown in detail for dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), loaded into a deep one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice (OL), by means of analytical and numerical methods in the tight-binding limit. The patterns featuring multiple periodicities are generated by the modulational instability of the continuous-wa…
We show, by means of numerical and analytical methods, that media with a repulsive nonlinearity which grows from the center to the periphery support a remarkable variety of previously unknown complex stationary and dynamical three-dimensional solitary-wave states. Peanut-shaped modulation profiles give rise to vertically symmetric and antisymmetric vortex states, and novel stationary hybrid states, built of top and bottom vortices with opposite topological charges, as well as robust dynamical hybrids, which feature stable precession of a vortex on top of a zero-vorticity base. The analysis rev…
In this paper we present soliton solutions of two coupled nonlinear Schodinger equations modulated in the bspace and time. The approach allows us to obatin solitons with large variety of solutions depending on the nonlinearity and the potential profiles. As examples we show three cases with soliton solution in such system, one of them with potential varying between repulsive and attractive behavior and the others with nonlinearity localized and delocalized, respectively.
A nonlinear Schrödinger equation with repulsive (defocusing) nonlinearity is considered. As an example, a system with a spatially varying coefficient of the nonlinear term is studied. The nonlinearity is chosen to be repelling except on a finite interval. Localized standing wave solutions on a non-zero background, e.g., dark solitons trapped by the inhomogeneity, are identified and studied. A novel instability criterion for such states is established through a topological argument. This allows instability to be determined quickly in many cases by considering simple geometric properties of the …
Solitons, nonlinear particle-like excitations with inalterable properties (amplitude, shape, and velocity) as they propagate, are omnipresent in many branches of science---and in physics in particular. Flat-top solitons are a novel type of bright solitons that have not been well explored in pure nonlinear media. Here, a model of nonlinear Kerr (cubic) media of ultracold atoms with spatially modulated repulsive interactions is proposed and shown to support a vast variety of stable flat-top matter-wave solitons, including one-dimensional (1D) flat-top fundamental and multipole solitons, two-dime…
We explore stability regions for solitons in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a spatially confined region carrying a combination of self-focusing cubic and septimal terms, with a quintic one of either focusing or defocusing sign. This setting can be implemented in optical waveguides based on colloids of nanoparticles. The solitons stability is identified by solving linearized equations for small perturbations, and is found to fully comply with the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. In the limit case of tight confinement of the nonlinearity, results are obtained in an analytical form, approxi…
Lugiato-Lefever (LL) equations in one and two dimensions (1D and 2D) accurately describe the dynamics of optical fields in pumped lossy cavities with the intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. The external pump is usually assumed to be uniform, but it can be made tightly focused too -- in particular, for building small pixels. We obtain solutions of the LL equations, with both the focusing and defocusing intrinsic nonlinearity, for 1D and 2D confined modes supported by the localized pump. In the 1D setting, we first develop a simple perturbation theory, based in the sech ansatz, in the case of weak pump…
A model of the optical media with a spatially structured Kerr nonlinearity is introduced. The nonlinearity strength is modulated by a set of singular peaks on top of a self-focusing or defocusing uniform background. The peaks may include a repulsive or attractive linear potential too. We find that a pair of mutually symmetric peaks readily gives rise to the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of modes pinned to individual peaks, while antisymmetric pinned modes are always unstable, transforming into robust spatially odd breathers. Three- and five-peak structures support symmetric modes, with i…
We extend the well-known theoretical treatment of the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in two-component systems, combining linear coupling and self-attractive nonlinearity, to a system in which the linear coupling competes with repulsive interactions. First, we address one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) ground-state (GS) solutions and 2D vortex states with topological charges S=1 and 2, maintained by a confining harmonic-oscillator potential. The system can be implemented in BEC and optics. By means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation and numerical solution of the underlying coupled Gross-P…
Schrödinger equation for Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions in one-dimensional space may be solved analytically with the help of the Bethe ansatz if we impose periodic boundary conditions. It was shown that in such a system there exist many-body eigenstates directly corresponding to dark soliton solutions of the mean-field equation. The system is still integrable if one switches from the periodic boundary conditions to an infinite square well potential. The corresponding eigenstates were constructed by M. Gaudin. We analyze weak interaction limit of Gaudin's solutions and identify pa…
We predict the existence of stable fundamental and vortical bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions (DDI). The condensate is trapped in the 2D plane with the help of the repulsive contact interactions whose local strength grows $\sim r^{4}$ from the center to periphery, while dipoles are oriented perpendicular to the self-trapping plane. The confinement in the perpendicular direction is provided by the usual harmonic-oscillator potential. The objective is to extend the recently induced concept of the self-trapping of bright solitons…
We consider the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation on a ring, with the cubic term, of either self-attractive or repulsive sign, confined to a narrow segment. This setting can be realized in optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. For the nonlinearity coefficient represented by the delta-function, all stationary states are obtained in an exact analytical form. The states with positive chemical potentials are found in alternating bands for the cases of the self-repulsion and attraction, while solutions with negative chemical potentials exist only in the latter case. These results provide a poss…
