We introduce an object called a tree growing sequence (TGS) in an effort to generalize bijective correspondences between $G$-parking functions, spanning trees, and the set of monomials in the Tutte polynomial of a graph $G$. A tree growing sequence determines an algorithm which can be applied to a single function, or to the set $\mathcal{P}_{G,q}$ of $G$-parking functions. When the latter is chosen, the algorithm uses splitting operations - inspired by the recursive defintion of the Tutte polynomial - to iteratively break $\mathcal{P}_{G,q}$ into disjoint subsets. This results in bijective maps $τ$ and $ρ$ from $\mathcal{P}_{G,q}$ to the spanning trees of $G$ and Tutte monomials, respectively. We compare the TGS algorithm to Dhar's algorithm and the family described by Chebikin and Pylyavskyy. Finally, we compute a Tutte polynomial of a zonotopal tiling using analogous splitting operations.
Kirchhoff's matrix-tree theorem states that the number of spanning trees of a graph G is equal to the value of the determinant of the reduced Laplacian of $G$. We outline an efficient bijective proof of this theorem, by studying a canonical finite abelian group attached to $G$ whose order is equal to the value of same matrix determinant. More specifically, we show how one can efficiently compute a bijection between the group elements and the spanning trees of the graph. The main ingredient for computing the bijection is an efficient algorithm for finding the unique $G$-parking function (reduce…
We associate two modules, the $G$-parking critical module and the toppling critical module, to an undirected connected graph $G$. The $G$-parking critical module and the toppling critical module are canonical modules (with suitable twists) of quotient rings of the well-studied $G$-parking function ideal and the toppling ideal, respectively. For each critical module, we establish a Tutte-like short exact sequence relating the modules associated to $G$, an edge contraction $G/e$ and an edge deletion $G \setminus e$ ($e$ is a non-bridge). We obtain purely combinatorial consequences of Tutte short…
We prove a combinatorial formula for Macdonald cumulants which generalizes the celebrated formula of Haglund for Macdonald polynomials. We provide several applications of our formula. Firstly, it gives a new, constructive proof of a strong factorization property of Macdonald polynomials proven recently by the author of this paper. Moreover it proves that Macdonald cumulants are $q,t$--positive in the monomial and in the fundamental quasisymmetric bases. Furthermore, we use our formula to prove the recent higher-order Macdonald positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the Schur polynomials…
The original Pak-Stanley labeling was defined by Pak and Stanley as a bijective map from the set of regions of an extended Shi arrangement to the set of parking functions. This map was later generalized to other arrangements associated with graphs and directed multigraphs. In these more general cases the map is no longer bijective. However, it was shown Hopkins and Perkinson and then the first author that it is surjective to the set of the $G$-parking functions, where $G$ is the multigraph associated with the arrangement. This leads to a natural question: when is the generalized Pak-Stanley ma…
Kreweras proved that the reversed sum enumerator for parking functions of length $n$ is equal to the inversion enumerator for labeled trees on $n+1$ vertices. Recently, Perkinson, Yang, and Yu gave a bijective proof of this equality that moreover generalizes to graphical parking functions. Using a depth-first search variant of Dhar's burning algorithm they proved that the codegree enumerator for $G$-parking functions equals the $κ$-number enumerator for spanning trees of $G$. The $κ$-number is a kind of generalized tree inversion number originally defined by Gessel. We extend the work of Perki…
An m-ballot path of size n is a path on the square grid consisting of north and east unit steps, starting at (0,0), ending at (mn,n), and never going below the line {x=my. The set of these paths can be equipped with a lattice structure, called the m-Tamari lattice and denoted by T_n^(m), which generalizes the usual Tamari lattice T_n obtained when m=1. This lattice was introduced by F. Bergeron in connection with the study of coinvariant spaces. He conjectured several intriguing formulas dealing with the enumeration of intervals in this lattice. One of them states that the number of intervals …
We classify recurrent states of the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on the complete split graph. There are two distinct cases to be considered that depend upon the location of the sink vertex in the complete split graph. This characterisation of decreasing recurrent states is in terms of Motzkin words and can also be characterised in terms of combinatorial necklaces. We also give a characterisation of the recurrent states in terms of a new type of parking function that we call a tiered parking function. These parking functions are characterised by assigning a tier (or colour) to each of the cars,…
Parking functions were classically defined for $n$ cars attempting to park on a one-way street with $n$ parking spots, where cars only drive forward. Subsequently, parking functions have been generalized in various ways, including allowing cars the option of driving backward. The set $PF_{n,k}$ of $k$-Naples parking functions have cars who can drive backward a maximum of $k$ steps before driving forward. A recursive formula for $|PF_{n,k}|$ has been obtained, though deriving a closed formula for $|PF_{n,k}|$ appears difficult. In addition, an important subset $B_{n,k}$ of $PF_{n,k}$, called th…
We present recent results on the enumeration of $q$-coloured planar maps, where each monochromatic edge carries a weight $ν$. This is equivalent to weighting each map by its Tutte polynomial, or to solving the $q$-state Potts model on random planar maps. The associated generating function, obtained by Olivier Bernardi and the author, is differentially algebraic. That is, it satisfies a (non-linear) differential equation. The starting point of this result is a functional equation written by Tutte in 1971, which translates into enumerative terms a simple recursive description of planar maps. The…
We apply the concept of parking functions to rooted labelled trees and functional digraphs of mappings (i.e., functions $f : [n] \to [n]$) by considering the nodes as parking spaces and the directed edges as one-way streets: Each driver has a preferred parking space and starting with this node he follows the edges in the graph until he either finds a free parking space or all reachable parking spaces are occupied. If all drivers are successful we speak about a parking function for the tree or mapping. We transfer well-known characterizations of parking functions to trees and mappings. Especial…
We give a bijective proof of the fact that the number of k-prefixes of minimal factorisations of the n-cycle (1...n) as a product of n-1 transpositions is n^{k-1}\binom{n}{k+1}. Rather than a bijection, we construct a surjection with fibres of constant size. This surjection is inspired by a bijection exhibited by Stanley between minimal factorisations of an n-cycle and parking functions, and by a counting argument for parking functions due to Pollak.
The number of regions of the type A_{n-1} Shi arrangement in R^n is counted by the intrinsically beautiful formula (n+1)^{n-1}. First proved by Shi, this result motivated Pak and Stanley as well as Athanasiadis and Linusson to provide bijective proofs. We give a description of the Athanasiadis-Linusson bijection and generalize it to a bijection between the regions of the type C_n Shi arrangement in R^n and sequences a_1a_2...a_n, where a_i \in \{-n, -n+1,..., -1, 0, 1,..., n-1, n\}, i \in [n]. Our bijections naturally restrict to bijections between regions of the arrangements with a certain nu…
Suppose that $m$ drivers each choose a preferred parking space in a linear car park with $n$ spots. In order, each driver goes to their chosen spot and parks there if possible, and otherwise takes the next available spot if it exists. If all drivers park successfully, the sequence of choices is called a parking function. Classical parking functions correspond to the case $m=n$; we study here combinatorial and probabilistic aspects of this generalized case. We construct a family of bijections between parking functions $\text{PF}(m, n)$ with $m$ cars and $n$ spots and spanning forests $\mathscr{…

We present a direct bijection between planar 3-connected triangulations and bridgeless planar maps, which were first enumerated by Tutte (1962) and Walsh and Lehman (1975) respectively. Previously known bijections by Wormald (1980) and Fusy (2010) are all defined recursively. Our direct bijection passes by a new class of combinatorial objects called "sticky trees". We also present bijections between sticky trees, intervals in the Tamari lattices and closed flows on forests. With our bijections, we recover several known enumerative results about these objects. We thus show that sticky trees can…
We study the interplay between chip-firing games and potential theory on graphs, characterizing reduced divisors ($G$-parking functions) on graphs as the solution to an energy (or potential) minimization problem and providing an algorithm to efficiently compute reduced divisors. Applications include an "efficient bijective" proof of Kirchhoff's matrix-tree theorem and a new algorithm for finding random spanning trees. The running times of our algorithms are analyzed using potential theory, and we show that the bounds thus obtained generalize and improve upon several previous results in the lit…
We develop direct bijections between the set $F_n^k$ of minimal factorizations of the long cycle $(0\,1\,\cdots\, kn)$ into $(k+1)$-cycle factors and the set $R_n^k$ of rooted labelled forests on vertices $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with edges coloured with $\{0,1,\ldots,k-1\}$ that map natural statistics on the former to generalized Mahonian statistics on the latter. In particular, we examine the generalized major index on forests $R_n^k$ and show that it has a simple and natural interpretation in the context of factorizations. Our results extend those by the present authors (2021), which treated the ca…
Let $G$ be a finite group and $χ: G \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ a class function. Let $H = (V,E)$ be a directed graph with for each vertex a cyclic order of the edges incident to it. The cyclic orders give a collection $F$ of faces of $H$. Define the partition function $P_χ(H) := \sum_{κ: E \rightarrow G}\prod_{v \in V}χ(κ(δ(v)))$, where $κ(δ(v))$ denotes the product of the $κ$-values of the edges incident with $v$ (in order), where the inverse is taken for any edge leaving $v$. Write $χ= \sum_λm_λχ_λ$, where the sum runs over irreducible representations $λ$ of $G$ with character $χ_λ$ and with $m…
