Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.
Yb- and Ce-based delafossites were recently identified as effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Several Yb-based systems, such as NaYbO2, NaYbS2, and NaYbSe2, exhibit no long-range order down to the lowest measured temperatures and therefore serve as putative candidates for the realization of a quantum spin liquid. However, their isostructural Ce-based counterpart KCeS2 exhibits magnetic order below TN = 400 mK, which was so far identified only in thermodynamic measurements. Here we reveal the magnetic structure of this long-range ordered phase using magnetic neutron d…
Layered rare-earth delafossites $ARX_2$ with $R$ = Yb(III) or Ce(III) have received a lot of interest as potential hosts for a quantum spin-liquid ground state. Some systems of this family that show no long-range order down to the lowest measured temperatures, such as NaYbO$_2$, NaYbS$_2$, and NaYbSe$_2$, are presumed to be in a quantum spin-liquid state. However, other isostructural compounds are known to order antiferromagnetically at subkelvin temperatures. Among them, KCeS$_2$ exhibits stripe-$yz$ magnetic order in the triangular-lattice planes that sets in below 400 mK. Here we investigat…
Triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets are prototypes of geometric frustration, even if for nearest-neighbor interactions quantum fluctuations are not usually strong enough to destroy magnetic ordering: stronger frustration is required to stabilize a spin-liquid phase. On the basis of static magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements, we demonstrate the emergence of ${\tilde{j}_{\text{eff}}=\frac12}$ moments in the triangular-lattice magnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$. These moments are subject to an extra source of frustration that causes magnetic correlations to set in far above both …
We study a spin model on honeycomb lattice with two types of Heisenberg exchange couplings, $J$ and $\tilde J$, where $J$ is for the conventional spin and and $\tilde J$ for rotated spin. When $\tilde J=0$, this is the conventional Heisenberg model. When J=0, the system is either in a stripy antiferromagnetic order($\tilde J<0$, ferromagnetic for rotated spin) or a zig-zag antiferromagnetic order ($\tilde J>0$, antiferromagnetic for rotated spin). The competition between two ferromagnetic orders or two antiferromagnetic orders induces Kitaev's spin liquid phase characterized by the exactly sol…
The bicollinear antiferromagnetic order experimentally observed in FeTe is shown to be stabilized by the coupling $\tilde g_{12}$ between monoclinic lattice distortions and the spin-nematic order parameter with $B_{\rm 2g}$ symmetry, within a three-orbital spin-fermion model studied with Monte Carlo techniques. A finite but small value of $\tilde g_{12}$ is required, with a concomitant lattice distortion compatible with experiments, and a tetragonal-monoclinic transition strongly first order. Remarkably, the bicollinear state found here displays a planar resistivity with the "reversed" puzzlin…
Dilution effects on spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets with a non-magnetic spin-gapped ground state are studied by means of the qunatum Monte Carlo simulation. In the site-diluted system, an antiferromagnetic long-range order (AF-LRO) is induced at an infinitesimal concentration of dilution due to an effective coupling $\tilde{J}_{mn}$ between induced magnetic moments. In the bond-diluted case, on the other hand, the AF-LRO is not induced up to a certain concentration of dilution due to singlet pairs reformed by an AF coupling $\tilde{J}_{\rm af}$ between the edge spins of the dilute…

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a Heisenberg model with spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. A diamond unit has two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the ratio $λ$ between the length of the diagonal bond and that of the other four edges determines the strength of frustration. It has been pointed out [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn {\bf85}, 033705 (2016)] that the so-called tetramer-dimer states, which are expected to be stabilized in an intermediate region of $λ_{\rm c}<λ<2$, are identical to the square-lattice dimer covering states, which ignited …
We investigate magnetoelectric coupling and low-energy magnetic excitations in multiferroic $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ by detailed thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 15~T and by high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance studies. Our data show negative thermal expansion in the temperature range $\leq 200$~K under study. Well-developed anomalies associated with the onset of multiferroic order (canted antiferromagnetism with a significant magnetic moment and ferroelectricity) imply pronounced coupling to the structure. We d…
Quantum entanglement under an extensive bipartition can reveal the critical boundary theory of a topological phase in the parameter space. In this study we demonstrate that the infinite-randomness fixed point for spin-1/2 degrees of freedom can emerge from an extensive random bipartition of the spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki chain. The nested entanglement entropy of the ground state of the reduced density matrix exhibits a logarithmic scaling with an effective central charge $\tilde{c} = 0.72 \pm 0.02 \approx \ln 2$. We further discuss, in the language of bulk quantum entanglement, how to …
The Cairo pentagonal lattice, consisting of an irregular pentagonal tiling of magnetic ions on two inequivalent sites (3- and 4-co-ordinated ones), represents a fascinating example for studying geometric frustration effects in two-dimensions. In this work, we investigate the spin $S$ = $1/2$ Cairo pentagonal lattice with respect to selective exchange coupling (which effectively corresponds to a virtual doping of $x$ = $0, 1/6, 1/3$), in a nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic Ising model. We also develop a simple method to quantify geometric frustration in terms of a frustration index $ϕ(β,T)$, …
We study the three-dimensional (3D) compact U(1) lattice gauge theory coupled with $N$-flavor Higgs fields by means of the Monte Carlo simulations. This model is relevant to multi-component superconductors, antiferromagnetic spin systems in easy plane, inflational cosmology, etc. It is known that there is no phase transition in the N=1 model. For N=2, we found that the system has a second-order phase transition line $\tilde{c}_1(c_2)$ in the $c_2$(gauge coupling)$-c_1$(Higgs coupling) plane, which separates the confinement phase and the Higgs phase. Numerical results suggest that the phase tra…
