The paper proposes the stable motion control law design method for non-honomic differential-drive mobile robot with system and measurement noise in discrete time domain. This method is performed basing on dividing operating configuration of robot into two parts: glocal and local configuration then the control law is designed following Lyapunov stable theory for two configuration. The proposed stable control laws is able to reach asymptotically stably to target position and orientation from any initial conditions even existing noise in the system. Some simulation results have demonstrated the effect of proposed method.

Certain wheeled mobile robots e.g., electric wheelchairs, can operate through indirect joystick controls from users. Correct steering angle becomes essential when the user should determine the vehicle direction and velocity, in particular for differential wheeled vehicles since the vehicle velocity and direction are controlled with only two actuating wheels. This problem gets more challenging when complex curves should be realized by the user. A novel assistive controller with safety constraints is needed to address these problems. Also, the classic control methods mostly require the desired s…

This paper presents the application of the concepts and approaches of linear graph (LG) theory in the modeling and simulation of a 4-wheel skid-steer mobile robotic system. An LG representation of the system is proposed and the accompanying state-space model of the dynamics of a mobile robot system is evaluated using the associated LGtheory MATLAB toolbox, which was developed in our lab. A genetic algorithm (GA)-based parameter estimation method is employed to determine the system parameters, which leads to a very accurate simulation of the model. The developed model is then evaluated and vali…
In this paper, we propose a nonlinear control strategy for swinging up a pendulum to its upright equilibrium position by shaping its swinging energy along with regulating the cart to a desired location. While the base of a usual cart-pole system is restricted to move in a straight line, the present system is allowed to move in the x-y plane with a nonholonomic consraint that its allowable velocity is only along its orientation. A simple time invariant control law has been presented and its effectiveness has been demonstrated using numerical experiments.

Planning smooth and energy-efficient motions for wheeled mobile robots is a central task for applications ranging from autonomous driving to service and intralogistic robotics. Over the past decades, a wide variety of motion planners, steer functions and path-improvement techniques have been proposed for such non-holonomic systems. With the objective of comparing this large assortment of state-of-the-art motion-planning techniques, we introduce a novel open-source motion-planning benchmark for wheeled mobile robots, whose scenarios resemble real-world applications (such as navigating warehouse…

Mobile robot positioning, mapping, and navigation systems generally employ an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to obtain the acceleration and angular velocity of the robot. However, errors in the internal and external parameters of an IMU arising from defective calibration directly affect the accuracy of robot positioning and pose estimation. While this issue has been addressed by the mature internal reference calibration methods available for IMUs, external reference calibration methods between the IMU and the chassis of a mobile robot are lacking. This study addresses this issue by proposing …

We present the design of a low-cost wheeled mobile robot, and an analytical model for predicting its motion under the influence of motor torques and friction forces. Using our proposed model, we show how to analytically compute the gradient of an appropriate loss function, that measures the deviation between predicted motion trajectories and real-world trajectories, which are estimated using Apriltags and an overhead camera. These analytical gradients allow us to automatically infer the unknown friction coefficients, by minimizing the loss function using gradient descent. Motion trajectories t…

Autonomous electric vehicles are being widely studied nowadays as the future technology of ground transportation, while the autonomous electric vehicles based on conventional powertrain system limit their energy and power transmission efficiencies and may hinder their broad applications in future. Here we report a study on the energy consumption and efficiency improvement of a mid-size autonomous electric vehicle driven by in-wheel motors, through the development of a numerical energy model, validated with the actual driving data and implemented in a case study. The energy analysis was conduct…

Human following on mobile robots has witnessed significant advances due to its potentials for real-world applications. Currently most human following systems are equipped with depth sensors to obtain distance information between human and robot, which suffer from the perception requirements and noises. In this paper, we design a wheeled mobile robot system with monocular pan-tilt camera to follow human, which can stay the target in the field of view and keep following simultaneously. The system consists of fast human detector, real-time and accurate visual tracker, and unified controller for m…
Slip is a very common phenomena present in wheeled mobile robotic systems. It has undesirable consequences such as wasting energy and impeding system stability. To tackle the challenge of mobile robot trajectory tracking under slippery conditions, we propose a hierarchical framework that learns and adapts gains of the tracking controllers simultaneously online. Concretely, a reinforcement learning (RL) module is used to auto-tune parameters in a lateral predictive controller and a longitudinal speed PID controller. Experiments show the necessity of simultaneous gain tuning, and have demonstrat…
This study presents the design of a six-wheeled outdoor autonomous mobile robot. The main design goal of our robot is to increase its adaptability and flexibility when moving outdoors. This six-wheeled robot platform was equipped with some sensors, such as a global positioning system (GPS), high definition (HD) webcam, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and rotary encoders. A personal mobile computer and 86Duino ONE microcontroller were used as the algorithm computing platform. In terms of control, the lateral offset and head angle offset of the robot were calculated using a differential GPS…

The research interest in mobile robots with independent steering wheels has been increasing over recent years due to their high mobility and better payload capacity over the systems using omnidirectional wheels. However, with more controllable degrees of freedom, almost all of the platforms include redundancy which is modeled using the instantaneous center of rotation (ICR). This paper deals with a Tetris inspired floor cleaning robot hTetro which consists of four interconnected differential-drive units, i.e., each module has a differential drive unit, which can steer individually. Differing f…

Differential drive mobile robots often use one or more caster wheels for balance. Caster wheels are appreciated for their ability to turn in any direction almost on the spot, allowing the robot to do the same and thereby greatly simplifying the motion planning and control. However, in aligning the caster wheels to the intended direction of motion they produce a so-called bore torque. As a result, additional motor torque is required to move the robot, which may in some cases exceed the motor capacity or compromise the motion planner's accuracy. Instead of taking a decoupled approach, where the …
In this paper, a control algorithm for guiding a two wheeled mobile robot with unknown inertia to a desired point and orientation using an Adaptive Model Predictive Control (AMPC) framework is presented. The two wheeled mobile robot is modeled as a knife edge or a skate with nonholonomic kinematic constraints and the dynamical equations are derived using the Lagrangian approach. The inputs at every time instant are obtained from Model Predictive Control (MPC) with a set of nominal parameters which are updated using a recursive least squares algorithm. The efficacy of the algorithm is demonstra…

This paper proposes a technique to manipulate an object with a nonholonomic mobile robot by pushing, which is a nonprehensile manipulation motion primitive. Such a primitive involves unilateral constraints associated with the friction between the robot and the manipulated object. Violating this constraint produces the slippage of the object during the manipulation, preventing the correct achievement of the task. A linear time-varying model predictive control is designed to include the unilateral constraint within the control action properly. The approach is verified in a dynamic simulation env…

Fast and versatile locomotion can be achieved with wheeled quadruped robots that drive quickly on flat terrain, but are also able to overcome challenging terrain by adapting their body pose and by making steps. In this paper, we present a state estimation approach for four-legged robots with non-steerable wheels that enables hybrid driving-stepping locomotion capabilities. We formulate a Kalman Filter (KF) for state estimation that integrates driven wheels into the filter equations and estimates the robot state (position and velocity) as well as the contribution of driving with wheels to the a…
