Web-crawled data provides a good source of parallel corpora for training machine translation models. It is automatically obtained, but extremely noisy, and recent work shows that neural machine translation systems are more sensitive to noise than traditional statistical machine translation methods. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to filter out noisy sentence pairs from web-crawled corpora via pre-trained language models. We measure sentence parallelism by leveraging the multilingual capability of BERT and use the Generative Pre-training (GPT) language model as a domain filter to balance data domains. We evaluate the proposed method on the WMT 2018 Parallel Corpus Filtering shared task, and on our own web-crawled Japanese-Chinese parallel corpus. Our method significantly outperforms baselines and achieves a new state-of-the-art. In an unsupervised setting, our method achieves comparable performance to the top-1 supervised method. We also evaluate on a web-crawled Japanese-Chinese parallel corpus that we make publicly available.

In this paper, we show that the combination of Phrase Pair Injection and Corpus Filtering boosts the performance of Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems. We extract parallel phrases and sentences from the pseudo-parallel corpus and augment it with the parallel corpus to train the NMT models. With the proposed approach, we observe an improvement in the Machine Translation (MT) system for 3 low-resource language pairs, Hindi-Marathi, English-Marathi, and English-Pashto, and 6 translation directions by up to 2.7 BLEU points, on the FLORES test data. These BLEU score improvements are over the …

This paper presents the NICT's participation in the WMT18 shared parallel corpus filtering task. The organizers provided 1 billion words German-English corpus crawled from the web as part of the Paracrawl project. This corpus is too noisy to build an acceptable neural machine translation (NMT) system. Using the clean data of the WMT18 shared news translation task, we designed several features and trained a classifier to score each sentence pairs in the noisy data. Finally, we sampled 100 million and 10 million words and built corresponding NMT systems. Empirical results show that our NMT syste…
We present a free Japanese-French parallel corpus. It includes 15M aligned segments and is obtained by compiling and filtering several existing resources. In this paper, we describe the existing resources, their quantity and quality, the filtering we applied to improve the quality of the corpus, and the content of the ready-to-use corpus. We also evaluate the usefulness of this corpus and the quality of our filtering by training and evaluating some standard MT systems with it.

This paper describes our submission to the WMT20 sentence filtering task. We combine scores from (1) a custom LASER built for each source language, (2) a classifier built to distinguish positive and negative pairs by semantic alignment, and (3) the original scores included in the task devkit. For the mBART finetuning setup, provided by the organizers, our method shows 7% and 5% relative improvement over baseline, in sacreBLEU score on the test set for Pashto and Khmer respectively.
The preprocessing pipelines in Natural Language Processing usually involve a step of removing sentences consisted of illegal characters. The definition of illegal characters and the specific removal strategy depend on the task, language, domain, etc, which often lead to tiresome and repetitive scripting of rules. In this paper, we introduce a simple statistical method, uniblock, to overcome this problem. For each sentence, uniblock generates a fixed-size feature vector using Unicode block information of the characters. A Gaussian mixture model is then estimated on some clean corpus using varia…
In this paper, we describe our submission to the WMT19 low-resource parallel corpus filtering shared task. Our main approach is based on the LASER toolkit (Language-Agnostic SEntence Representations), which uses an encoder-decoder architecture trained on a parallel corpus to obtain multilingual sentence representations. We then use the representations directly to score and filter the noisy parallel sentences without additionally training a scoring function. We contrast our approach to other promising methods and show that LASER yields strong results. Finally, we produce an ensemble of differen…

In this paper, we describe our submissions to the WMT20 shared task on parallel corpus filtering and alignment for low-resource conditions. The task requires the participants to align potential parallel sentence pairs out of the given document pairs, and score them so that low-quality pairs can be filtered. Our system, Volctrans, is made of two modules, i.e., a mining module and a scoring module. Based on the word alignment model, the mining module adopts an iterative mining strategy to extract latent parallel sentences. In the scoring module, an XLM-based scorer provides scores, followed by r…
The parallel corpus for multilingual NLP tasks, deep learning applications like Statistical Machine Translation Systems is very important. The parallel corpus of Hindi-English language pair available for news translation task till date is of very limited size as per the requirement of the systems are concerned. In this work we have developed an automatic parallel corpus generation system prototype, which creates Hindi-English parallel corpus for news translation task. Further to verify the quality of generated parallel corpus we have experimented by taking various performance metrics and the r…
We present the IIT Bombay English-Hindi Parallel Corpus. The corpus is a compilation of parallel corpora previously available in the public domain as well as new parallel corpora we collected. The corpus contains 1.49 million parallel segments, of which 694k segments were not previously available in the public domain. The corpus has been pre-processed for machine translation, and we report baseline phrase-based SMT and NMT translation results on this corpus. This corpus has been used in two editions of shared tasks at the Workshop on Asian Language Translation (2016 and 2017). The corpus is fr…
Although the parallel corpus has an irreplaceable role in machine translation, its scale and coverage is still beyond the actual needs. Non-parallel corpus resources on the web have an inestimable potential value in machine translation and other natural language processing tasks. This article proposes a semi-supervised transductive learning method for expanding the training corpus in statistical machine translation system by extracting parallel sentences from the non-parallel corpus. This method only requires a small amount of labeled corpus and a large unlabeled corpus to build a high-perform…
We present a new Icelandic-English parallel corpus, the Icelandic Parallel Abstracts Corpus (IPAC), composed of abstracts from student theses and dissertations. The texts were collected from the Skemman repository which keeps records of all theses, dissertations and final projects from students at Icelandic universities. The corpus was aligned based on sentence-level BLEU scores, in both translation directions, from NMT models using Bleualign. The result is a corpus of 64k sentence pairs from over 6 thousand parallel abstracts.

Most current machine translation models are mainly trained with parallel corpora, and their translation accuracy largely depends on the quality and quantity of the corpora. Although there are billions of parallel sentences for a few language pairs, effectively dealing with most language pairs is difficult due to a lack of publicly available parallel corpora. This paper creates a large parallel corpus for English-Japanese, a language pair for which only limited resources are available, compared to such resource-rich languages as English-German. It introduces a new web-based English-Japanese par…
We present a new release of the Czech-English parallel corpus CzEng 2.0 consisting of over 2 billion words (2 "gigawords") in each language. The corpus contains document-level information and is filtered with several techniques to lower the amount of noise. In addition to the data in the previous version of CzEng, it contains new authentic and also high-quality synthetic parallel data. CzEng is freely available for research and educational purposes.
This work distinguishes between translated and original text in the UN protocol corpus. By modeling the problem as classification problem, we can achieve up to 95% classification accuracy. We begin by deriving a parallel corpus for different language-pairs annotated for translation direction, and then classify the data by using various feature extraction methods. We compare the different methods as well as the ability to distinguish between translated and original texts in the different languages. The annotated corpus is publicly available.
In the current work, we explore the enrichment in the machine translation output when the training parallel corpus is augmented with the introduction of sentiment analysis. The paper discusses the preparation of the same sentiment tagged English-Bengali parallel corpus. The preparation of raw parallel corpus, sentiment analysis of the sentences and the training of a Character Based Neural Machine Translation model using the same has been discussed extensively in this paper. The output of the translation model has been compared with a base-line translation model using automated metrics such as …
We present a new open-source parallel corpus consisting of news articles collected from the Bianet magazine, an online newspaper that publishes Turkish news, often along with their translations in English and Kurdish. In this paper, we describe the collection process of the corpus and its statistical properties. With more than 7000 languages worldwide, multilingual natural language processing (NLP) is essential both from an academic and commercial perspective. Researching typological properties of languages is fundamental for progress in multilingual NLP. Examples include assessing language similarity for effective transfer learning, injecting inductive biases into machine learning models or creating resources such as dictionaries and inflection tables. We provide ParCourE, an online tool that allows to browse a word-aligned parallel corpus, covering 1334 languages. We give evidence that this is usefu…

Code-mixing is the phenomenon of using more than one language in a sentence. It is a very frequently observed pattern of communication on social media platforms. Flexibility to use multiple languages in one text message might help to communicate efficiently with the target audience. But, it adds to the challenge of processing and understanding natural language to a much larger extent. This paper presents a parallel corpus of the 13,738 code-mixed English-Hindi sentences and their corresponding translation in English. The translations of sentences are done manually by the annotators. We are rel…

Existing models of multilingual sentence embeddings require large parallel data resources which are not available for low-resource languages. We propose a novel unsupervised method to derive multilingual sentence embeddings relying only on monolingual data. We first produce a synthetic parallel corpus using unsupervised machine translation, and use it to fine-tune a pretrained cross-lingual masked language model (XLM) to derive the multilingual sentence representations. The quality of the representations is evaluated on two parallel corpus mining tasks with improvements of up to 22 F1 points o…
Neural Machine Translation with its significant results, still has a great problem: lack or absence of parallel corpus for many languages. This article suggests a method for generating considerable amount of parallel corpus for any language pairs, extracted from open source materials existing on the Internet. Parallel corpus contents will be derived from video subtitles. It needs a set of video titles, with some attributes like release date, rating, duration and etc. Process of finding and downloading subtitle pairs for desired language pairs is automated by using a crawler. Finally sentence p…
Recent machine translation algorithms mainly rely on parallel corpora. However, since the availability of parallel corpora remains limited, only some resource-rich language pairs can benefit from them. We constructed a parallel corpus for English-Japanese, for which the amount of publicly available parallel corpora is still limited. We constructed the parallel corpus by broadly crawling the web and automatically aligning parallel sentences. Our collected corpus, called JParaCrawl, amassed over 8.7 million sentence pairs. We show how it includes a broader range of domains and how a neural machi…

Lectures translation is a case of spoken language translation and there is a lack of publicly available parallel corpora for this purpose. To address this, we examine a language independent framework for parallel corpus mining which is a quick and effective way to mine a parallel corpus from publicly available lectures at Coursera. Our approach determines sentence alignments, relying on machine translation and cosine similarity over continuous-space sentence representations. We also show how to use the resulting corpora in a multistage fine-tuning based domain adaptation for high-quality lectu…
With a large amount of parallel data, neural machine translation systems are able to deliver human-level performance for sentence-level translation. However, it is costly to label a large amount of parallel data by humans. In contrast, there is a large-scale of parallel corpus created by humans on the Internet. The major difficulty to utilize them is how to filter them out from the noise website environments. Current parallel data mining methods all require labeled parallel data as the training source. In this paper, we present a pipeline to mine the parallel corpus from the Internet in an uns…

Machine translation (MT) has almost achieved human parity at sentence-level translation. In response, the MT community has, in part, shifted its focus to document-level translation. However, the development of document-level MT systems is hampered by the lack of parallel document corpora. This paper describes BWB, a large parallel corpus first introduced in Jiang et al. (2022), along with an annotated test set. The BWB corpus consists of Chinese novels translated by experts into English, and the annotated test set is designed to probe the ability of machine translation systems to model various…

This paper presents an effective approach for parallel corpus mining using bilingual sentence embeddings. Our embedding models are trained to produce similar representations exclusively for bilingual sentence pairs that are translations of each other. This is achieved using a novel training method that introduces hard negatives consisting of sentences that are not translations but that have some degree of semantic similarity. The quality of the resulting embeddings are evaluated on parallel corpus reconstruction and by assessing machine translation systems trained on gold vs. mined sentence pa…
In this work we introduce dual conditional cross-entropy filtering for noisy parallel data. For each sentence pair of the noisy parallel corpus we compute cross-entropy scores according to two inverse translation models trained on clean data. We penalize divergent cross-entropies and weigh the penalty by the cross-entropy average of both models. Sorting or thresholding according to these scores results in better subsets of parallel data. We achieve higher BLEU scores with models trained on parallel data filtered only from Paracrawl than with models trained on clean WMT data. We further evaluat…
We describe our experience with automatic alignment of sentences in parallel English-Chinese texts. Our report concerns three related topics: (1) progress on the HKUST English-Chinese Parallel Bilingual Corpus; (2) experiments addressing the applicability of Gale & Church's length-based statistical method to the task of alignment involving a non-Indo-European language; and (3) an improved statistical method that also incorporates domain-specific lexical cues.

Machine translation is highly sensitive to the size and quality of the training data, which has led to an increasing interest in collecting and filtering large parallel corpora. In this paper, we propose a new method for this task based on multilingual sentence embeddings. In contrast to previous approaches, which rely on nearest neighbor retrieval with a hard threshold over cosine similarity, our proposed method accounts for the scale inconsistencies of this measure, considering the margin between a given sentence pair and its closest candidates instead. Our experiments show large improvement…

Swiss German is a dialect continuum whose natively acquired dialects significantly differ from the formal variety of the language. These dialects are mostly used for verbal communication and do not have standard orthography. This has led to a lack of annotated datasets, rendering the use of many NLP methods infeasible. In this paper, we introduce the first annotated parallel corpus of spoken Swiss German across 8 major dialects, plus a Standard German reference. Our goal has been to create and to make available a basic dataset for employing data-driven NLP applications in Swiss German. We pres…

Gender bias in natural language processing (NLP) applications, particularly machine translation, has been receiving increasing attention. Much of the research on this issue has focused on mitigating gender bias in English NLP models and systems. Addressing the problem in poorly resourced, and/or morphologically rich languages has lagged behind, largely due to the lack of datasets and resources. In this paper, we introduce a new corpus for gender identification and rewriting in contexts involving one or two target users (I and/or You) -- first and second grammatical persons with independent gra…
Neural Machine Translation (NMT) has been proven to achieve impressive results. The NMT system translation results depend strongly on the size and quality of parallel corpora. Nevertheless, for many language pairs, no rich-resource parallel corpora exist. As described in this paper, we propose a corpus augmentation method by segmenting long sentences in a corpus using back-translation and generating pseudo-parallel sentence pairs. We propose a novel approach for cross-lingual Named Entity Recognition (NER) zero-shot transfer using parallel corpora. We built an entity alignment model on top of XLM-RoBERTa to project the entities detected on the English part of the parallel data to the target language sentences, whose accuracy surpasses all previous unsupervised models. With the alignment model we can get pseudo-labeled NER data set in the target language to train task-specific model. Unlike using translation methods, this approach benefits from natural fluency and nuances in target-language original corpus. We also propo…
