Plasmonic nanolithography is a nanofabrication technique which exploits surface plasmons to generate subdiffraction patterns. In this review, we highlight the key concepts in plasmonic nanolithography, review the pioneering papers and provide a classification that can be useful in determining the proper method and tool for subdiffraction patterning. Considering the ongoing developments in the field of plasmonics, lithography using surface plasmons is an extremely promising approach for development of high-throughput nanofabrication techniques.
In this thesis various plasmonic materials, such as hyperbolic metamaterial nanohole arrays and Au-coated free standing nanoassembly supporting nanopores, are investigated with the aim to perform optical sensing of DNA molecules with Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy in flow-through configuration.
Plasmonic metasurfaces based on the extraordinary optical transmission effect (EOT) can be designed to efficiently transmit specific spectral bands from the visible to the far-infrared regimes, offering numerous applications in im-portant technological fields such as compact multispectral imaging, biological and chemical sensing, or color displays. However, due to their subwavelength nature, EOT metasurfaces are nowadays fabricated with nano- and micro-lithographic techniques, requiring many processing steps and carried out in expensive cleanroom environments. In this work, we propose and expe…
A new configuration for metasurface construction is presented to achieve multi-functional capabilities including perfect absorption, bio/chem sensing, and surface-mode lasing. The reciprocal plasmonic metasurfaces discussed here are composed of two plasmonic surfaces of reciprocal geometries separated by a dielectric spacer. Compared to conventional metasurfaces this simple geometry exhibits an enhanced optical performance. The discussed reciprocal metasurface design further enables effective structural optimization and allows for a simple and scalable fabrication. The physical principle and p…
A galvanic displacement reaction-based, room-temperature "dip-and-dry" technique is demonstrated for fabricating selectively solar-absorbing plasmonic nanostructure-coated foils (PNFs). The technique, which allows for facile tuning of the PNFs' spectral reflectance to suit different radiative and thermal environments, yields PNFs which exhibit excellent, wide-angle solar absorptance (0.96 at 15°, to 0.97 at 35°, to 0.79 at 80°) and low hemispherical thermal emittance (0.10) without the aid of antireflection coatings. The thermal emittance is on par with those of notable selective solar absorbe…
The measured experimental results of optical diffraction of 10, 5 and 3.4 micrometer period plasmonic surface relief grating are presented for the application of band-pass filter in visible spectral range. Conventional scanning electron microscopic (SEM) is used to fabricate the grating structures on the silver halide based film (substrate) by exposing the electron beam in raster scan fashion. Morphological characterization of the gratings is performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows that the period, height and profile depends on the line per frame, beam spot, single line dwell time, be…
Plasmonic Particle Integration into Near-Infrared Photodetectors and Photoactivated Gas Sensors: Towards Sustainable Next-Generation Ubiquitous Sensing
An all-epitaxial approach was demonstrated to create coaxial plasmon laser structures composed of an alumi-num plasmonic metal / SiNx dielectric / InGaN quantum well shell surrounding a p-GaN nanowire core. Strong UV lumi-nescence was observed from as-grown vertically-aligned arrays as well as horizontally-aligned nanowires transferred to a transparent carrier wafer.
Plasmonic metasurfaces exhibiting collective responses known as surface lattice resonances (SLRs) show potential for realizing tunable and flat photonic components for wavelength-selective processes, including lasing and optical nonlinearities. However, post-fabrication tuning of SLRs remains challenging, limiting the applicability of SLR-based components. Here, we demonstrate how the properties of high quality factor SLRs are easily modified by breaking the symmetry of the nanoparticle surroundings. We break the symmetry by changing the refractive index of the overlying immersion oil simply b…
Metal-dielectric interfaces of various geometries are fundamental photonic material platforms for surface plasmons. Surface plasmon polaritons and localized surface plasmons are two surface plasmon modes that are excited on planar and curved metal-dielectric interfaces, respectively. Herein, we demonstrate in-situ formation of silver nanoparticles by diffusion at a planar interface between sputter-deposited silver and nitride dielectrics. In one step, we synthesize a nanostructure that exhibits both localized surface plasmon resonances at silver nanoparticles and surface plasmon resonances at …

Here, we review a broad range of traditional and novel techniques that have been utilized for developing advanced biosensing tools including colloidal nanoparticles (NPs)-based systems to well-engineered arrays of meta-atoms and metamolecules. By describing some of the important and practical label-free biosensing methods based on subwavelength plasmonic technology, we discuss the emerg…
We present two-dimensional plasmonic Doppler grating (PDG) for broadband azimuthal angle-resolved nanophotonic applications. The PDG consists of a set of non-concentric circular rings mimicking the wavefronts of a moving point source that exhibits Doppler Effect and thereby offers continuous azimuthal angle-dependent lattice momentum for photon-plasmon coupling. The center and span of the working frequency window are fully designable for optimal performance in specific applications. We detail the design, fabrication and optical characterization of the PDG. The design of Doppler grating provide…

Periodic arrays of air nanoholes in thin metal films that support surface plasmon resonances can provide an alternative approach for boosting the light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Indeed, nanohole arrays have garnered great interest in recent years for their use in biosensing, light emission enhancement and spectroscopy. However, the large-scale use of nanohole arrays in emerging technology requires new low-cost fabrication techniques. Here, we demonstrate a simple technique to fabricate nanohole arrays and examine their photonic applications. In contrast to the complicated and most …

Recently, studies have been carried out on attempts to combine surface-enhanced Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates that can be based on either localized surface plasmon (LSP) or surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) structures. By combining these two systems, the drawbacks of each other can be solved. However, the manufacturing methods involved so far are sophisticated, labor-intensive, expensive, and also technically demanding. We propose a facile method for the fabrication of a flexible plasmonic nanoslit SERS sensor. We utilized the pattern on periodic optical disks (DVD-R) as…
