Assuming a vertical hydrostatic equilibrium in the baryonic discs, joint Poisson's-Boltzmann equation was set up and solved numerically in a sample of 23 nearby dwarf galaxies from the LITTLE-THINGS survey. This is the largest sample to date for which detailed hydrostatic modeling is performed. The solutions of the Poisson's-Boltzmann equation provide a complete three-dimensional distribution of the atomic hydrogen (HI) in these galaxies. Using these solutions, we estimate the vertical scale height (defined as the Half Width at Half Maxima (HWHM) of the density distribution) of the HI as a function of radius. We find that the scale height in our sample galaxies varies between a few hundred parsecs at the center to a few kiloparsecs at the edge. These values are significantly higher than what is observed in spiral galaxies. We further estimate the axial ratios to investigate the thickness of the HI discs in dwarf galaxies. For our sample galaxies, we find a median axial ratio to be 0.40, which is much higher than the same observed in the Milky Way. This indicates that the vertical hydrostatic equilibrium results in thicker HI discs in dwarf galaxies naturally.
We present a tally of Milky Way late-type dwarf stars in 68 WFC3 pure-parallel fields (227 arcmin^2) from the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) survey for high-redshift galaxies. Using spectroscopically identified M-dwarfs in two public surveys, the CANDELS and the ERS mosaics, we identify a morphological selection criterion using the half-light radius (r50), a near-infrared J-H, G-J color region where M-dwarfs are found, and a V-J relation with M-dwarf subtype. We apply this morphological selection of stellar objects, color-color selection of M-dwarfs and optical-near-infrared color sub…
Like massive galaxies, dwarf galaxies are expected to undergo major mergers with other dwarfs. However, the end state of these mergers and the role that merging plays in regulating dwarf star formation is uncertain. Using imaging from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic program, we construct a sample of dwarf-dwarf mergers and examine the star formation and host properties of the merging systems. These galaxies are selected via an automated detection algorithm from a sample of 6875 spectroscopically selected isolated dwarf galaxies at $z<0.12$ and $\log(M_\star/M_\odot)<9.6$ from the Galaxy…
A model is proposed for the formation of gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies and gas-poor, rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies following the interaction between two giant galaxies as a function of space density. The formation of dwarf galaxies is considered to depend on a random variable, the tidal index theta, an environmental parameter defined by Karachentsev et al. (2004), such that for theta less than zero, the formation of dwarf irregular galaxy is assured whereas for theta greater than zero, the formation of dwarf ellipticals is preferred. It is found that for particular ranges of the inter…
Mergers are a common phenomenon in hierarchical structure formation, especially for massive galaxies and clusters, but their importance for dwarf galaxies in the Local Group remains poorly understood. We investigate the frequency of major mergers between dwarf galaxies in the Local Group using the ELVIS suite of cosmological zoom-in dissipationless simulations of Milky Way- and M31-like host halos. We find that ~10% of satellite dwarf galaxies with M_star > 10^6 M_sun that are within the host virial radius experienced a major merger of stellar mass ratio closer than 0.1 since z = 1, with a low…
We present the results of the spectroscopic and photometric follow-up of two field galaxies that were selected as possible stellar counterparts of local high velocity clouds. Our analysis shows that the two systems are distant (D>20 Mpc) dwarf irregular galaxies unrelated to the local HI clouds. However, the newly derived distance and structural parameters reveal that the two galaxies have luminosities and effective radii very similar to the recently identified Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs). At odds with classical UDGs, they are remarkably isolated, having no known giant galaxy within ~2.0 Mpc…
We study how the void environment affects galactic chemical evolution by comparing the oxygen and nitrogen abundances of dwarf galaxies in voids with dwarf galaxies in denser regions. Using spectroscopic observations from SDSS DR7, we estimate oxygen, nitrogen, and neon abundances of 889 void dwarf galaxies and 672 dwarf galaxies in denser regions. A substitute for the [OII] 3727 doublet is developed, permitting oxygen abundance estimates of SDSS dwarf galaxies at all redshifts with the Direct Te method. We find that void dwarf galaxies have about the same oxygen abundance and Ne/O ratio, slig…
The tidal tails of globular clusters have been shown to be sensitive to the external tidal field. We investigate how Galactic globular clusters with observed tails are affected by satellite dwarf galaxies by simulating tails in galaxy models with and without dwarf galaxies. The simulations indicate that tidal tails can be subdivided into into three categories based on how they are affected by dwarf galaxies: 1) dwarf galaxies perturb the progenitor cluster's orbit (NGC 4590, Pal 1, Pal 5), 2) dwarf galaxies perturb the progenitor cluster's orbit and individual tail stars (NGC 362, NGC 1851, NG…
We have identified two channels for the formation of compact dwarf galaxies in the Illustris simulation by reconstructing mass and distance histories of candidates located in the vicinity of the simulation's most massive cluster galaxies. One channel is tidal stripping of Milky Way mass galaxies that form outside of clusters and eventually sink into them, spiraling in toward central massive objects. Second channel of formation is an in-situ formation (in reference to the parent cluster) of dwarf mass galaxies, with negligible evolution and limited change in stellar mass. We find 19 compact dwa…
I present a dynamical analysis of the measured redshifts and distances of 64 dwarf galaxies at distances between 50 kpc and 2.6 Mpc. These dwarfs are assumed to move as test particles in the gravitational field of 12 massive actors---galaxies and groups of galaxies---under the mixed boundary conditions imposed by cosmology. The model fits most of the measured dwarf distances and redshifts. But more work, perhaps on the gravitational interaction among dwarf galaxies, is required to account for the motions of six galaxies in the NGC 3109 association and two in the DDO 210 association. The sample…
The vertical halo scale height is a crucial parameter to understand the transport of cosmic-ray electrons (CRE) and their energy loss mechanisms in spiral galaxies. Until now, the radio scale height could only be determined for a few edge-on galaxies because of missing sensitivity at high resolution. We developed a sophisticated method for the scale height determination of edge-on galaxies. With this we determined the scale heights and radial scale lengths for a sample of 13 galaxies from the CHANG-ES radio continuum survey in two frequency bands. The sample average value for the radio scale h…
In search for a synthetic understanding, a scenario for the evolution of the star formation rate and the chemical abundances in galaxies is proposed, combining gas infall from galactic halos, outflow of gas by supernova explosions, and an oscillatory star formation process. The oscillatory star formation model is a consequence of the modelling of the fractional masses changes of the hot, warm and cold components of the interstellar medium. The observed periods of oscillation vary in the range $(0.1-3.0)\times10^{7}$\,yr depending on various parameters existing from giant to dwarf galaxies. The…
The nature of possible evolutionary pathways between various types of dwarf galaxies is still not fully understood. Blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) provide a unique window into dwarf galaxy formation and evolution and are often thought of as an evolutionary stage between different classes of dwarf galaxies. In this study we use deep optical and near-infrared observations of the underlying hosts of BCDs in order to study the structural differences between different types of dwarf galaxies. When compared with dwarf irregular galaxies of similar luminosities, we find that the underlying hosts …
We present DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) of 22 star-forming dwarf galaxies located in four gas-rich groups, including six newly-discovered dwarfs. Two of the galaxies are strong tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates based on our luminosity-metallicity relation definition. We model the rotation curves of these galaxies. Our sample shows low mass-to-light ratios (M/L=0.73$\pm0.39M_\odot/L_\odot$) as expected for young, star-forming dwarfs. One of the galaxies in our sample has an apparently strongly-falling rotation curve, reaching zero rotational velocity outside the turnover radius of $…
Having to have low thermal energy, the molecular gas in galaxies is expected to settle in a thin disc near the midplane. However, contradicting this understanding, recent studies have revealed considerably thick molecular discs in nearby spiral galaxies. To understand this apparent discrepancy, we theoretically model the molecular discs in a sample of eight nearby spiral galaxies and estimate their molecular scale heights (Half Width at Half Maxima (HWHM)). We assume that the baryonic discs are in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium under their mutual gravity in the external force field of the da…
We review observational data about a sample of Local Volume objects containing about 1000 galaxies within 11 Mpc of the Milky Way. Dwarf galaxies with stellar masses $M_*/M_{\odot} < 9$ dex make up 5/6 of the sample. Almost 40% of them have their distances measured with high precision using the Hubble Space Telescope. Currently, the LV is the most representative and least selection-affected sample of dwarf galaxies suitable for testing the standard $Λ$CDM paradigm at the shortest cosmological scales. We discuss the H II properties of dwarf galaxies in different environments and the star format…
In the Local Group there are three main types of dwarf galaxies: Dwarf Irregulars, Dwarf Spheroidals, and Dwarf Ellipticals. Intermediate/transitional types are present as well. This contribution reviews the idea that the present day variety of dwarf galaxy morphologies in the Local Group might reveal the existence of a transformation chain of events, of which any particular dwarf galaxy represents a manifestation of a particular stage. In other words, all dwarf galaxies that now are part of the Local Group would have formed identically in the early universe, but then evolved differently becau…
Despite traditional thinking, an appreciable population of massive black holes may be lurking in dwarf galaxies. Prior to the last decade, nearly all massive black holes were found in the nuclei of giant galaxies and the existence of massive black holes in dwarf galaxies was highly controversial. The field has now been transformed with a growing community of researchers working on a variety of observational studies and theoretical models of dwarf galaxies hosting massive black holes. Work in this area is not only important for a holistic understanding of dwarf galaxy evolution and feedback, bu…
Intermediate-mass black holes (BHs) in local dwarf galaxies are considered the relics of the early seed BHs. However, their growth might have been impacted by galaxy mergers and BH feedback so that they cannot be treated as tracers of the early seed BH population.
We present FIRE/Gizmo hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of isolated dark matter halos, two each at the mass of classical dwarf galaxies ($M_{\rm vir} \simeq 10^{10} M_{\odot}$) and ultra-faint galaxies ($M_{\rm vir} \simeq 10^9 M_{\odot}$), and with two feedback implementations. The resultant central galaxies lie on an extrapolated abundance matching relation from $M_{\star} \simeq 10^6$ to $10^4 M_{\odot}$ without a break. Every host is filled with subhalos, many of which form stars. Our dwarfs with $M_{\star} \simeq 10^6 M_{\odot}$ each have 1-2 well-resolved satellites with $M_{\star} = 3-20…
The surface brightness distribution of $\sim$30-40$\%$ of the early-type dwarf galaxies with $-18 \leq M_{B} \leq -15$ in the Virgo and the Coma clusters is fitted by models that include two structural components (Sèrsic + exponential) as for bright disc galaxies. The goal of the present study is to determine whether early-type dwarf galaxies with a two-component stellar structure in the Virgo and the Coma clusters are low-luminosity copies of bright disc galaxies or are the remnants of bright galaxies strongly transformed by cluster environmental effects.I analysed the location of bright disc …
Searching for active galactic nuclei (AGN) in dwarf galaxies is important for our understanding of the seed black holes that formed in the early Universe. Here, we test infrared selection methods for AGN activity at low galaxy masses. Our parent sample consists of ~18,000 nearby dwarf galaxies (M*< 3 x 10^9 Msun, $z<0.055$) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with significant detections in the first three bands of the AllWISE data release from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). First, we demonstrate that the majority of optically-selected AGNs in dwarf galaxies are not selected as AGN…
The Solo (Solitary Local) Dwarf Galaxy survey is a volume limited, wide-field g- and i- band survey of all known nearby (<3 Mpc) and isolated (>300 kpc from the Milky Way or M31) dwarf galaxies. This set of 44 dwarfs are homogeneously analysed for quantitative comparisons to the satellite dwarf populations of the Milky Way and M31. In this paper, an analysis of the 12 closest Solo dwarf galaxies accessible from the northern hemisphere is presented, including derivation of their distances, spatial distributions, morphology, and extended structures, including their inner integrated light propert…
The gas content of the complete compilation of Local Group dwarf galaxies (119 within 2 Mpc) is presented using HI survey data. Within the virial radius of the Milky Way (224 kpc here), 53 of 55 dwarf galaxies are devoid of gas to limits of M$_{\rm HI}<10^4$ M$_\odot$. Within the virial radius of M31 (266 kpc), 27 of 30 dwarf galaxies are devoid of gas (with limits typically $<10^5$ M$_\odot$). Beyond the virial radii of the Milky Way and M31, the majority of the dwarf galaxies have detected HI gas and have HI masses higher than the limits. When the relationship between gas content and distanc…
The environmental dependence of the morphology of dwarf galaxies in isolated satellite systems is analyzed to understand the origin of the dwarf galaxy morphology using the visually classified morphological types of 5836 local galaxies with $z \lesssim 0.01$. We consider six sub-types of dwarf galaxies, dS0, dE, dE$_{bc}$, dSph, dE$_{blue}$, and dI, of which the first four sub-types are considered as early-type and the last two as late-type. The environmental parameters we consider are the projected distance from the host galaxy ($r_{p}$), local and global background densities, and the host mo…
The mass-metallicity relation shows that the galaxies with the lowest mass have the lowest metallicities. As most dwarf galaxies are in group environments, interaction effects such as tides could contribute to this trend. We perform a series of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of dwarf galaxies in external tidal fields to examine the effects of tides on their metallicities and metallicity gradients. In our simulated galaxies, gravitational instabilities drive gas inwards and produce centralized star formation and a significant metallicity gradient. Strong tides can contribute …
We present the largest publicly available catalog of interacting dwarf galaxies. It includes 177 nearby merging dwarf galaxies of stellar mass M$_{*}$ $<$ 10$^{10}$M$_{\sun}$ and redshifts z $<$ 0.02. These galaxies are selected by visual inspection of publicly available archival imaging from two wide-field optical surveys (SDSS III and the Legacy Survey), and they possess low surface brightness features that are likely the result of an interaction between dwarf galaxies. We list UV and optical photometric data which we use to estimate stellar masses and star formation rates. So far, the study…
We present a study of 41 dwarf galaxies hosting active massive black holes (BHs) using Hubble Space Telescope observations. The host galaxies have stellar masses in the range of $M_\star \sim 10^{8.5}-10^{9.5}~M_\odot$ and were selected to host active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on narrow emission line ratios derived from Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy. We find a wide range of morphologies in our sample including both regular and irregular dwarf galaxies. We fit the HST images of the regular galaxies using GALFIT and find that the majority are disk-dominated with small pseudobulges, al…
Nearby isolated galaxies ($z\sim 0$), are considered immerse within a thermal bath at 2.73 K. However the dwarf galaxies orbiting these galaxies are also subject to additional radiation from their hosts, so they are within a thermal bath slightly warmer. We claim that this thermal effect can explain several properties of the dwarf galaxies, such as their rotation curves, their radial acceleration relations (RAR) and why the velocity-mass dependence at the faint end of the Tully Fisher Relation (TFR) is steeper for these galaxies. In the Debye Gravitational Theory (DGT), the galaxies properties…
Using the data release 1 of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program covering about 130 square degrees at high galactic latitudes, we have obtained L dwarf counts based on the selection criteria on colors, limiting magnitude and PSF morphology using $i$, $z$, and $y$ bands. 3665 L dwarfs brighter than $z=24$ have been detected by these criteria. The surface number counts obtained differentially in $z$ magnitude are compared with predictions of an exponential disk model to estimate the thin-disk scale height in the vicinity of the Sun. In the exponential disk model, we first fix the local…
We report the measured H$α$ fluxes and images of 66 nearby objects observed with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Three of these objects: IC2233, UGC4704, and NGC3432 are late-type spiral galaxies, six objects are distant globular clusters of the M31 galaxy, and the remaining ones are dwarf galaxies. We used the measured H$α$ fluxes to estimate the integrated and specific star-formation rates and analyzed some of the main features of star formation in dwarf galaxies and late-type spirals based on a sample of more than 500 Local volu…
I review the current status of dynamical modelling of dwarf spheroidal galaxies focusing on estimates of their dark matter content. Starting with the simplest methods using the velocity dispersion profiles I discuss the inherent issues of mass-anisotropy degeneracy and contamination by unbound stars. I then move on to methods of increasing complexity, aiming to break the degeneracy, up to recent applications of the Schwarzschild orbit superposition method. The dynamical modelling is placed in the context of possible scenarios for the formation of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, including the tidal …
Using 8.4 years of photometry from the AllWISE/NEOWISE multi-epoch catalogs, we compare the mid-infrared variability properties of a sample of 2197 dwarf galaxies (M_stellar < 2 x 10^9 h^-2 M_sun) to a sample of 6591 more massive galaxies (M_stellar >= 10^10 h^-2 M_sun) matched in mid-infrared apparent magnitude. We find only 2 dwarf galaxies with mid-infrared variability, a factor of ~10 less frequent than the more massive galaxies (p = 6 x 10^-6), consistent with previous findings of optical variability in low-mass and dwarf galaxies using data with a similar baseline and cadence. Within the…
We examine the metallicity distribution of the Galactic thick disk using F, G, and K dwarf stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Data Release 8. Using the large sample of dwarf stars with proper motions and spectroscopically determined stellar parameters, metallicity gradients in the radial direction for various heights above the Galactic plane and in the vertical direction for various radial distances from the Galaxy center have been found. In particular, we find a vertical metallicity gradient of -0.113 +/- 0.010 (-0.125 +/- 0.008) dex/kpc using an isochrone (photometric) distanc…
We present optical and mid-infrared photometry of a statistically complete sample of 29 very faint dwarf galaxies (M_r > -15 mag) selected from the SDSS spectroscopic sample and observed in the mid-infrared with Spitzer IRAC. This sample contains nearby (redshift z<0.005) galaxies three magnitudes fainter than previously studied samples. We compare our sample with other star-forming galaxies that have been observed with both IRAC and SDSS. We examine the relationship of the infrared color, sensitive to PAH abundance, with star-formation rates, gas-phase metallicities and radiation hardness, al…
Determining the fraction of nearby dwarf galaxies hosting massive black holes (BHs) can inform our understanding of the origin of "seed" black holes at high redshift. Here we search for signatures of accreting massive BHs in a sample of dwarf galaxies ($M_\star \le 3 \times 10^9~M_\odot$, $z \leq 0.15$) selected from the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) using X-ray observations from the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS). On average, our search is sensitive to active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dwarf galaxies that are accreting at $\gtrsim 1%$ of their Eddington luminosity. Of the ${\sim}28,000…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are regarded as the basic building blocks in the formation of larger galaxies and are believed to be the most dark matter dominated systems known in the Universe. There are several models that attempt to explain their formation and evolution, but they have problems to model the formation of isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Here, we will explain a possible formation scenario in which star clusters form inside the dark matter halo of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Those star clusters suffer from low star formation efficiency and dissolve while orbiting inside the dark ma…
We present the structural parameters of $\sim910$ dwarf elliptical-like galaxies in the local universe ($z\lesssim0.01$) derived from the $r-$band images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We examine the dependence of structural parameters on the morphological types (dS0, dE,dE$_{bc}$, dSph, and dE$_{blue}$). There is a significant difference in the structural parameters among the five sub-types if we properly treat the light excess due to nucleation in dSph and dE galaxies. The mean surface brightness within the effective radius ($<μ_{e}>$) of dSph galaxies is also clearly different from…
Dwarf galaxies constitute 18\% of the galaxies in the core of the Coma Cluster. We present the correlation between structural properties and morphology of galaxies in the central region of Coma Cluster for 221 objects within the apparent magnitude range m $<$ 19.5. The data is taken from the HST/ACS Coma Cluster Treasury Survey. For cluster membership we have used photometric redshifts and spectroscopic redshifts from literature. From the investigation of correlations of effective radius, Sersic index, absolute magnitude and bulge to total light ratio, we find the galaxies are distributed as f…
Could there be intermediate mass black holes in essentially all old dwarf galaxies? I argue that current observations of Active Galactic Nuclei in dwarfs allow such a radical hypothesis which provides early feedback and potentially provides a unifying explanation for many if not all of the apparent dwarf galaxy anomalies, such as the abundance, core-cusp, "too big to fail", ultra-faint and baryon-fraction issues. I describe the supporting arguments, which are largely circumstantial in nature, and discuss a number of tests. There is no strong motivation for modifying the nature of cold dark mat…
We study star formation histories (SFHs) of $\simeq500$ dwarf galaxies (stellar mass $M_\ast = 10^5 - 10^9\,M_\odot$) from FIRE-2 cosmological zoom-in simulations. We compare dwarfs around individual Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies, dwarfs in Local Group (LG)-like environments, and true field (i.e. isolated) dwarf galaxies. We reproduce observed trends wherein higher-mass dwarfs quench later (if at all), regardless of environment. We also identify differences between the environments, both in terms of "satellite vs. central" and "LG vs. individual MWvs. isolated dwarf central." Around the individ…
Ultra Compact Dwarf Galaxies (UCDs) and dwarf galaxy nuclei have many common properties, such as internal velocity dispersions and colour-magnitude trends, suggesting tidally stripped dwarf galaxies as a possible UCD origin. However, UCDs typically have sizes more than twice as large as nuclei at the same luminosity. We use a GPU-enabled version of the particle-mesh code \textsc{superbox} to study the possibility of turning nucleated dwarf galaxies into UCDs by tidally stripping them in a Virgo-like galaxy cluster. We find that motion in spherical potentials, where close passages happen many t…
We study how the cosmic environment affects galaxy evolution in the Universe by comparing the metallicities of dwarf galaxies in voids with dwarf galaxies in more dense regions. Ratios of the fluxes of emission lines, particularly those of the forbidden [O III] and [S II] transitions, provide estimates of a region's electron temperature and number density. From these two quantities and the emission line fluxes [O II] 3727, [O III] 4363, and [O III] 4959,5007, we estimate the abundance of oxygen with the Direct Te method. We estimate the metallicity of 42 blue, star-forming void dwarf galaxies …
We present spatially resolved kinematic measurements of AGN-driven outflows in dwarf galaxies in the stellar mass range $\sim6\times10^8 - 9\times10^9 M_\odot$, selected from SDSS DR7,8 and followed up with Keck/LRIS spectroscopy. We find spatially extended ($\sim 1$ half light radius), high velocity ionized gas outflows ($W_{80}$ up to $\sim2000\,\rm{km\,s}^{-1}$) in 13/50 dwarf galaxies with and without AGN. Outflow velocities in all 13 galaxies exceed the escape velocities of their halos. Nine of these 13 galaxies are classified as AGN according to their narrow line flux ratios. Of these, s…
Accurately reproducing the thin cold gas discs observed in nearby spiral galaxies has been a long standing issue in cosmological simulations. Here, we present measurements of the radially resolved HI scale height in 22 non-interacting Milky Way-mass galaxies from the FIREbox cosmological volume. We measure the HI scale heights using five different approaches commonly used in the literature: fitting the vertical volume density distribution with a Gaussian, the distance between maximum and half-maximum of the vertical volume density distribution, a semi-empirical description using the velocity d…
When interpreted within the standard framework of Newtonian gravity and dynamics, the kinematics of stars and gas in dwarf galaxies reveals that most of these systems are completely dominated by their dark matter halos. These dwarf galaxies are thus among the best astrophysical laboratories to study the structure of dark halos and the nature of dark matter. We review the properties of the dwarf galaxies of the Local Group from the point of view of stellar dynamics. After describing the observed kinematics of their stellar components and providing an overview of the dynamical modelling techniqu…
In recent years, numerous active galactic nuclei have been discovered in ever smaller galaxies, questioning the paradigm that dwarf galaxies do not harbour central massive black holes. Even if such black holes exist, feeding them by gas streams is difficult, since star formation should be more efficient than AGN feeding in dwarf galaxies. In this paper, I investigate the possibility that tidal disruptions of stars are responsible for the observed AGN in dwarf galaxies. I show that the expected duty cycles of TDE-powered AGN, $f_{\rm AGN} \geq 0.5\%$, are consistent with observed AGN fractions …
Though smooth, extended spheroidal stellar outskirts have long been observed around nearby dwarf galaxies, it is unclear whether dwarfs generically host an extended stellar halo. We use imaging from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) to measure the shapes of dwarf galaxies out to four effective radii for a sample of dwarfs at 0.005<z<0.2 and 10^7<M_star/M_sun<10^9.6. We find that dwarfs are slightly triaxial, with a <B/A> >~ 0.75 (where the ellipsoid is characterized by three principle semi-axes constrained by C<=B<=A). At M_star>10^8.5 M_sun, the galaxies grow from thick…
We report the result of searching for globular clusters (GCs) around 55 Milky Way satellite dwarf galaxies within the distance of 450 kpc from the Galactic Center except for the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and the Sagittarius dwarf. For each dwarf, we analyze the stellar distribution of sources in Gaia DR2, selected by magnitude, proper motion, and source morphology. Using the kernel density estimation of stellar number counts, we identify eleven possible GC candidates. Crossed-matched with existing imaging data, all eleven objects are known either GCs or galaxies and only Fornax GC 1-6 …
We compare and contrast the stellar structures of isolated Local Group dwarf galaxies, as traced by their oldest stellar populations, with the satellite dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way and M31. All Local Group dwarfs with Mv < -6 and surface brightness < 26.5 mags. per square arcsec. are considered, taking advantage of measurements from surveys that use similar observations and analysis techniques. For the isolated dwarfs, we use the results from Solitary Local (Solo) Dwarf Galaxy Survey. We begin by confirming that the structural and dynamical properties of the two satellite populations are n…
Using N-body simulations of shell galaxies created in nearly radial minor mergers, we investigate the error of collision dating, resulting from the neglect of dynamical friction and of gradual disruption of the cannibalized dwarf.
