We present optical and mid-infrared photometry of a statistically complete sample of 29 very faint dwarf galaxies (M_r > -15 mag) selected from the SDSS spectroscopic sample and observed in the mid-infrared with Spitzer IRAC. This sample contains nearby (redshift z<0.005) galaxies three magnitudes fainter than previously studied samples. We compare our sample with other star-forming galaxies that have been observed with both IRAC and SDSS. We examine the relationship of the infrared color, sensitive to PAH abundance, with star-formation rates, gas-phase metallicities and radiation hardness, all estimated from optical emission lines. Consistent with studies of more luminous dwarfs, we find that the very faint dwarf galaxies show much weaker PAH emission than more luminous galaxies with similar specific star-formation rates. Unlike more luminous galaxies, we find that the very faint dwarf galaxies show no significant dependence at all of PAH emission on star-formation rate, metallicity, or radiation hardness, despite the fact that the sample spans a significant range in all of these quantities. When the very faint dwarfs in our sample are compared with more luminous (M_r ~ -18 mag) dwarfs, we find that PAH emission depends on metallicity and radiation hardness. These two parameters are correlated; we look at the PAH-metallicity relation at fixed radiation hardness and the PAH-hardness relation at fixed metallicity. This test shows that the PAH emission in dwarf galaxies depends most directly on metallicity.
Infrared observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope archive are used to study the dust component of the interstellar medium in the IC~10 irregular galaxy. Dust distribution in the galaxy is compared to the distributions of H$α$ and [SII] emission, neutral hydrogen and CO clouds, and ionizing radiation sources. The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the galaxy is shown to be highly non-uniform with the mass fraction of these particles in the total dust mass reaching 4%. PAHs tend to avoid bright HII regions and correlate well with atomic and molecular gas. This pattern…
Observations of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies can be used to study a variety of topics, including the structure of dark matter halos and the history of vigorous star formation in low-mass galaxies. We report on the properties of the faint globular cluster (M_V ~ -3.4) in the M31 dwarf galaxy Andromeda I. This object adds to the growing population of low-luminosity Local Group galaxies that host single globular clusters.
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of five faint dwarf galaxies associated with the nearby spiral NGC 253 (D$\approx$3.5 Mpc). Three of these are newly discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, while all five were found in the Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor (PISCeS), a Magellan$+$Megacam survey to identify faint dwarfs and other substructures in resolved stellar light around massive galaxies outside of the Local Group. Our HST data reach $\gtrsim$3 magnitudes below the tip of the red giant branch for each dwarf, allowing us to derive their distances, structural par…
We present updated chemical evolution models of two dwarf spheroidal galaxies (Sculptor and Carina) and the first detailed chemical evolution models of two ultra-faint dwarfs (Hercules and Boötes I). Our results suggest that the dwarf spheroidals evolve with a low efficiency of star formation, confirming previous results, and the ultra-faint dwarfs with an even lower one. Under these assumptions, we can reproduce the stellar metallicity distribution function, the $[α/Fe]$ vs. $[Fe/H]$ abundance patterns and the total stellar and gas masses observed at the present time in these objects. In part…
The lowest luminosity (L < 10^5 L_sun) Milky Way satellite galaxies represent the extreme lower limit of the galaxy luminosity function. These ultra-faint dwarfs are the oldest, most dark matter-dominated, most metal-poor, and least chemically evolved stellar systems known. They therefore provide unique windows into the formation of the first galaxies and the behavior of dark matter on small scales. In this review, we summarize the discovery of ultra-faint dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in 2005, and the subsequent observational and theoretical progress in understanding their nature and…
A faint dwarf irregular galaxy has been discovered in the HST/ACS field of LV J1157+5638. The galaxy is resolved into individual stars, including the brightest magnitude of the red giant branch. The dwarf is very likely a physical satellite of LV J1157+5638.The distance modulus of LV J1157+5638 using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance indicator is 29.82+-0.09 mag (D = 9.22+-0.38 Mpc). The TRGB distance modulus of LV J1157+5638 sat is 29.76+-0.11 mag (D = 8.95+-0.42 Mpc). The distances to the two galaxies are consistent within the uncertainties. The projected separation between the…
We report the discovery of Tucana B, an isolated ultra-faint dwarf galaxy at a distance of D=1.4 Mpc. Tucana B was found during a search for ultra-faint satellite companions to the known dwarfs in the outskirts of the Local Group, although its sky position and distance indicate the nearest galaxy to be $\sim$500 kpc distant. Deep ground-based imaging resolves Tucana B into stars, and it displays a sparse red giant branch consistent with an old, metal poor stellar population analogous to that seen in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way, albeit at fainter apparent magnitudes. Tucana …
New near-infrared large-area sky surveys (e.g. UKIDSS, CFBDS, WISE) go deeper than 2MASS and aim at detecting brown dwarfs lurking in the Solar neighbourhood which are even fainter than the latest known T-type objects, so-called Y dwarfs. Using UKIDSS data, we have found a faint brown dwarf candidate with very red optical-to-near-infrared but extremely blue near-infrared colours next to the recently discovered nearby L dwarf SDSS J141624.08$ + $134826.7. We check if the two objects are co-moving by studying their parallactic and proper motion and compare the new object with known T dwarfs. The…
Nearby isolated galaxies ($z\sim 0$), are considered immerse within a thermal bath at 2.73 K. However the dwarf galaxies orbiting these galaxies are also subject to additional radiation from their hosts, so they are within a thermal bath slightly warmer. We claim that this thermal effect can explain several properties of the dwarf galaxies, such as their rotation curves, their radial acceleration relations (RAR) and why the velocity-mass dependence at the faint end of the Tully Fisher Relation (TFR) is steeper for these galaxies. In the Debye Gravitational Theory (DGT), the galaxies properties…
Low-mass dwarf galaxies are very sensitive test-beds for theories of cosmic structure formation since their weak gravitational fields allow the effects of the relevant physical processes to clearly stand out. Up to now, no unified account exists of the sometimes seemingly conflicting properties of the faintest isolated dwarfs in and around the Local Group, such as Leo T and the recently discovered Leo P and Pisces A systems. Using new numerical simulations, we show that this serious challenge to our understanding of galaxy formation can be effectively resolved by taking into account the regula…
We present FIRE/Gizmo hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of isolated dark matter halos, two each at the mass of classical dwarf galaxies ($M_{\rm vir} \simeq 10^{10} M_{\odot}$) and ultra-faint galaxies ($M_{\rm vir} \simeq 10^9 M_{\odot}$), and with two feedback implementations. The resultant central galaxies lie on an extrapolated abundance matching relation from $M_{\star} \simeq 10^6$ to $10^4 M_{\odot}$ without a break. Every host is filled with subhalos, many of which form stars. Our dwarfs with $M_{\star} \simeq 10^6 M_{\odot}$ each have 1-2 well-resolved satellites with $M_{\star} = 3-20…
We have obtained deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of four faint and ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidates in the vicinity of M101 - Dw21, Dw22, Dw23 and Dw35, originally discovered by Bennet et al. (2017). Previous distance estimates using the surface brightness fluctuation technique have suggested that these four dwarf candidates are the only remaining viable M101 satellites identified in ground based imaging out to the virial radius of M101 (D~250 kpc). Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging of all four dwarf candidates shows no associated resolved stellar populations, indicating that th…
We obtained deep Gemini GMOS-S $g,r$ photometry of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidate Cetus II with the aim of providing stronger constraints on its size, luminosity and stellar population. Cetus II is an important object in the size-luminosity plane as it occupies the transition zone between dwarf galaxies and star clusters. All known objects smaller than Cetus II ($r_h \sim 20$ pc) are reported to be star clusters, while most larger objects are likely dwarf galaxies. We found a prominent excess of main-sequence stars in the colour-magnitude diagram of Cetus II, best described by a single…
[Abridged] Aims. The lowest-mass galaxies, ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, promise unparalleled constraints on how feedback regulates galaxy formation, and on the small-scale matter power spectrum. Their inner dark-matter densities can also be used to constrain dark-matter models. In this paper, we present 201 new stellar line-of-sight velocities from the MUSE-Faint survey for the (ultra-)faint dwarf galaxies Antlia B, Leo T, Hydra II, and Grus 1. Combining these with literature data, we obtain the tightest constraints to date on their dark-matter halo masses and inner dark-matter densities. Metho…
In the standard Lambda cold dark matter paradigm, pure dark matter simulations predict dwarf galaxies should inhabit dark matter haloes with a centrally diverging density `cusp'. This is in conflict with observations that typically favour a constant density `core'. We investigate this `cusp-core problem' in `ultra-faint' dwarf galaxies simulated as part of the `Engineering Dwarfs at Galaxy formation's Edge' (EDGE) project. We find, similarly to previous work, that gravitational potential fluctuations within the central region of the simulated dwarfs kinematically heat the dark matter particles…
We search for RR Lyrae stars in 27 nearby ($<100$ kpc) ultra-faint dwarf satellite galaxies using the Gaia DR2 catalog of RR Lyrae stars. Based on proper motions, magnitudes and location on the sky, we associate 47 Gaia RR Lyrae stars to 14 different satellites. Distances based on RR Lyrae stars are provided for those galaxies. We have identified RR Lyrae stars for the first time in the Tucana II dwarf galaxy, and find additional members in Ursa Major II, Coma Berenices, Hydrus I, Bootes I and Bootes III. In addition we have identified candidate extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars in six galaxies which…
We develop a technique to investigate the possibility that some of the recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf satellites of the Milky Way might be cusp caustics rather than gravitationally self-bound systems. Such cusps can form when a stream of stars folds, creating a region where the projected 2-D surface density is enhanced. In this work, we construct a Poisson maximum likelihood test to compare the cusp and exponential models of any substructure on an equal footing. We apply the test to the Hercules dwarf (d ~ 113 kpc, M_V ~ -6.2, e ~ 0.67). The flattened exponential model is strongly favor…
We have determined the amount of stellar mass segregation in over 50 globular clusters and ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidates based on deep HST and ground-based photometry. We find that the amount of mass segregation in globular clusters is strongly correlated with their relaxation time and that all clusters with relaxation times of the order of their ages or longer have little to no mass segregation. For each cluster, the amount of mass segregation seen is fully compatible with the amount expected by dynamical evolution from initially unsegregated clusters, showing that globular clusters for…
The existence of ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies highlights the need to push our theoretical understanding of galaxies to extremely low mass. We examine the formation of UFDs by twice running a fully cosmological simulations of dwarf galaxies, but varying star formation. One run uses a temperature-density threshold for star formation, while the other uses an H$_{2}$-based sub-grid star formation model. The total number of dwarf galaxies that forms is different by a factor of 2 between the two runs, but most of these are satellites, leading to a factor of 5 difference in the number of luminous…

We report the discovery of Antlia B, a faint dwarf galaxy at a projected distance of $\sim$72 kpc from NGC 3109 ($M_{V}$$\sim$$-$15 mag), the primary galaxy of the NGC 3109 dwarf association at the edge of the Local Group. The tip of the red giant branch distance to Antlia B is $D$=1.29$\pm$0.10 Mpc, which is consistent with the distance to NGC 3109. A qualitative analysis indicates the new dwarf's stellar population has both an old, metal poor red giant branch ($\gtrsim$10 Gyr, [Fe/H]$\sim$$-$2), and a younger blue population with an age of $\sim$200-400 Myr, analogous to the original Antlia …
We report the discovery of 158 previously undetected dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster central regions using a deep coadded $u, g$ and $i$-band image obtained with the DECam wide-field camera mounted on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory as part of the {\it Next Generation Fornax Survey} (NGFS). The new dwarf galaxies have quasi-exponential light profiles, effective radii $0.1\!<\!r_e\!<\!2.8$ kpc and average effective surface brightness values $22.0\!<\!μ_i\!<\!28.0$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. We confirm the existence of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the …
Using images from the SDSS DR13 library, we examine the structural properties of 374 bright (classed E0 to E6) and dwarf ellipticals (classed dE(nN) to dE(N)). The sample combines a multicolor sample of bright ellipticals (252 galaxies with $M_g < -20$) with a new sample of faint ellipticals (60 galaxies with $M_g > -20$) which overlaps the dwarf elliptical sample (62 galaxies) in luminosity and size. The faint ellipticals extend the linear structural correlations found for bright ellipticals into parameter space not occupied by dwarf ellipticals indicating a dichotomy exists between the two t…
The abundance of the faintest galaxies provides insight into the nature of dark matter and the process of dwarf galaxy formation. In the LCDM scenario, low mass halos are so numerous that the efficiency of dwarf formation must decline sharply with decreasing halo mass in order to accommodate the relative scarcity of observed dwarfs and satellites in the Local Group. The nature of this decline contains important clues to the mechanisms regulating the onset of galaxy formation in the faintest systems. We explore here two possible models for the stellar mass ($M_*$)-halo mass ($M_{200}$) relation…
We apply a Bayesian method to model multi-epoch radial velocity measurements in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II, fully accounting for the effects of binary orbital motion and systematic offsets between different spectroscopic datasets. We find that the binary fraction of Ret II is higher than 0.5 at the 90% confidence level, if the mean orbital period is assumed to be 30 years or longer. Despite this high binary fraction, we infer a best-fit intrinsic dispersion of 2.8$_{-1.2}^{+0.7}$ km/s, which is smaller than previous estimates, but still indicates Ret II is a dark-matter dominate…
Ghostly stellar haloes are extended haloes of stars composed solely of debris of pre-reionization fossil galaxies and should exist in dwarf galaxies with total masses $<10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Fossil galaxies are even smaller mass dwarf galaxies that stopped forming stars after the epoch of reionization and have been identified in the Local Group as the ultra-faint dwarf satellites. Using cosmological N-body simulations we present an empirical model for the shapes and masses of ghostly stellar haloes. We compare the model to available observations of stellar haloes in six isolated dwarf galaxies i…
We report the discovery of a new faint dwarf galaxy, which we dub Scl-MM-Dw1, at a projected distance of $\sim$65 kpc from the spiral galaxy NGC 253. The discovery results from the Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor (PISCeS), a program with the Magellan/Megacam imager to study faint substructure in resolved stellar light around massive galaxies outside of the Local Group. We measure a tip of the red giant branch distance to Scl-MM-Dw1 of $D$=3.9$\pm$0.5 Mpc, consistent with that of NGC 253, making their association likely. The new dwarf's stellar population is complex, with an …
The second data release from the Gaia mission (DR2) provides a comprehensive and unprecedented picture of the motions of astronomical sources in the plane of the sky, extending from the solar neighborhood to the outer reaches of the Milky Way. I present proper motion measurements based on Gaia DR2 for 17 ultra-faint dwarf galaxies within 100 kpc of the Milky Way. I compile the spectroscopically-confirmed member stars in each dwarf bright enough for Gaia astrometry from the literature, producing member samples ranging from 2 stars in Triangulum II to 68 stars in Bootes I. From the spectroscopic…
We present results from the "Mint" resolution DC Justice League suite of Milky Way-like zoom-in cosmological simulations, which extend our study of nearby galaxies down into the ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) regime for the first time. The mass resolution of these simulations is the highest ever published for cosmological Milky Way zoom-in simulations run to $z=0$, with initial star (dark matter) particle masses of 994 (17900) M$_\odot$, and a force resolution of 87 pc. We study the surrounding dwarfs and UFDs, and find the simulations match the observed dynamical properties of galaxies with $-3 < M_…
Recent observations have discovered a number of extremely gas-rich very faint dwarf galaxies possibly embedded in low-mass dark matter halos. We investigate star formation histories of these gas-rich dwarf ("almost dark") galaxies both for isolated and interacting/merging cases. We find that although star formation rates (SFRs) are very low (<10^-5 M_sun/yr) in the simulated dwarfs in isolation for the total halo masses (M_h) of 10^8-10^9 M_sun, they can be dramatically increased to be ~ 10^{-4} M_sun/yr when they interact or merge with other dwarfs. These interacting faint dwarfs with central…
We report the discovery of the faintest known dwarf galaxy satellite of an LMC stellar-mass host beyond the Local Group, based on deep imaging with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam. MADCASH J074238+652501-dw lies $\sim$35 kpc in projection from NGC 2403, a dwarf spiral galaxy at $D$$\approx$3.2 Mpc. This new dwarf has $M_{g} = -7.4\pm0.4$ and a half-light radius of $168\pm70$ pc, at the calculated distance of $3.39\pm0.41$ Mpc. The color-magnitude diagram reveals no evidence of young stellar populations, suggesting that MADCASH J074238+652501-dw is an old, metal-poor dwarf similar to low luminosity dw…
Stellar prolate rotation in dwarf galaxies is rather uncommon, with only two known galaxies in the Local Group showing such feature (Phoenix and And II). Cosmological simulations show that in massive early-type galaxies prolate rotation likely arises from major mergers. However, the origin of such kinematics in the dwarf galaxies regime has only been explored using idealized simulations. Here we made use of hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of dwarfs galaxies with stellar mass between $3\times10^5$ and $5\times10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ to explore the formation of prolate rotators. Out of $27$ dw…
We present the discovery of d1005+68, a new faint dwarf galaxy in the M81 Group, using observations taken with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. d1005+68's color-magnitude diagram is consistent with a distance of $3.98_{-0.43}^{+0.39}$ Mpc, establishing group membership. We derive an absolute $V$-band magnitude, from stellar isochrone fitting, of $M_{V} = -7.94_{-0.50}^{+0.38}$, with a half-light radius of $r_{h} = 188_{-41}^{+39}$ pc. These place d1005+68 within the radius-luminosity locus of Local Group and M81 satellites and among the faintest confirmed satellites outside the Local Group. Assum…
The highly r-process enhanced (r-II) metal-poor halo stars we observe today could play a key role in understanding early ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, the smallest building blocks of the Milky Way. If a significant fraction of metal-poor r-II halo stars originated in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies that merged to help form the Milky Way, observations of r-II stars could help us study these now-destroyed systems and probe the formation history of our Galaxy. To conduct our initial investigation into this possible connection, we use high-resolution cosmological simulations of Milky-Way-mass galaxie…
The ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Hercules has an extremely elongated morphology with both photometric overdensities and kinematic members at large radii, suggesting that it may be tidally disrupting due to a previous close encounter with the Milky Way. To explain its observational peculiarities, we present a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging study of Hercules and its surrounding regions and investigate its tidal history through a careful search for a distance gradient along its stretched body. Our off-center HST data clearly resolve a main sequence, showing that the stellar extension seen …
Establishing the spatial extents and the nature of the outer stellar populations of dwarf galaxies are necessary ingredients for the determination of their total masses, current dynamical states and past evolution. We here describe our investigation of the outer stellar content of the Boötes I ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, a satellite of the Milky Way Galaxy. We identify candidate member blue horizontal branch and blue straggler stars of Boötes I, both tracers of the underlying ancient stellar population, using a combination of multi-band Pan-STARRS photometry and Gaia astrometry. We find a total …
As part of the Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor (PISCeS) we report the discovery of a pair of faint dwarf galaxies (CenA-MM-Dw1 and CenA-MM-Dw2) at a projected distance of $\sim$90 kpc from the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC5128 (CenA). We measure a tip of the red giant branch distance to each dwarf, finding $D=3.63 \pm 0.41$ Mpc for CenA-MM-Dw1 and $D=3.60 \pm 0.41$ Mpc for CenA-MM-Dw2, both of which are consistent with the distance to NGC5128. A qualitative analysis of the color magnitude diagrams indicates stellar populations consisting of an old, metal-poor red giant branch…
Numerical simulations of dwarf galaxies have so far failed to reproduce the observed metallicity-luminosity relation, down to the ultra-faint dwarfs (UFDs). We address this issue exploring how the first generations of metal-free stars (Pop III) could help increase the mean metallicity of those faint galaxies. We run zoom-in chemo-dynamical simulations of nineteen halos extracted from a cosmological box and follow down to redshift 0. Models are validated not only on the basis of galaxy global properties, but also the stellar abundance ratios. We identify the necessary conditions for the formati…
As the total mass of stellar populations of fixed IMF, age and metallicity tends to infinity, resulting intrinsic $M/L$ values quickly converge to fixed numbers associated to the particulars of the stars in question. When going to very small stellar populations, the stochastic sampling of the IMF will yield an inherent spread for the $M/L$ values, which will become probabilistic quantities. For the recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies, with total luminosities dropping below 10^3 L_V/L_o, it is important to asses the amplitude of the probabilistic spread in inherent $M/L$ v…
CEMP-no stars, a subset of carbon enhanced metal poor (CEMP) stars ($\rm [C/Fe]\geq0.7$ and $\rm [Fe/H]\lesssim-1$) have been discovered in ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies, with $M_{\rm vir} \sim 10^8$ Msun and $M_{\ast}\sim10^3-10^4$ Msun at $z=0$, as well as in the halo of the Milky Way (MW). These CEMP-no stars are local fossils that may reflect the properties of the first (Pop~III) and second (Pop~II) generation of stars. However, cosmological simulations have struggled to reproduce the observed level of carbon enhancement of the known CEMP-no stars. Here we present new cosmological hydro…
We present the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy, Hydra II, found serendipitously within the data from the ongoing Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) conducted with the Dark Energy Camera on the Blanco 4m Telescope. The new satellite is compact (r_h = 68 +/- 11 pc) and faint (M_V = -4.8 +/- 0.3), but well within the realm of dwarf galaxies. The stellar distribution of HydraII in the color-magnitude diagram is well-described by a metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -2.2) and old (13 Gyr) isochrone and shows a distinct blue horizontal branch, some possible red clump stars, and faint stars that are …
We study the intrinsic shapes of a sample of over 400 quiescent galaxies in the cores of the Virgo and Fornax clusters with luminosities $10^{6} \leq L_{g}/L_{\odot} \leq 10^{8}$. Similar to satellites of the Local Group and Centaurus A, these faint, low surface brightness cluster galaxies are best described as a family of thick ($C/A > 0.5$), oblate-triaxial spheroids. However, the large sample size allows us to show that the flattening of their stellar distributions depends both on luminosity and on the presence of a nuclear star cluster. Nucleated satellites are thicker at all luminosities …
Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are newcomers among galaxies, and are the faintest galaxies in the observed universe. To date, they have only been found around the Milky Way Galaxy and M31 in the Local Group. We present the discovery of an UFD in the intracluster field in the core of the Virgo cluster (Virgo UFD1), which is far from any massive galaxies. The color-magnitude diagram of the resolved stars in this galaxy shows a narrow red giant branch, similar to those of metal-poor globular clusters in the Milky Way. We estimate its distance by comparing the red giant branch with isochrones, …
We present mean absolute proper motion measurements for seven ultra-faint dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way, namely Boötes III, Carina II, Grus II, Reticulum II, Sagittarius II, Segue 2 and Tucana IV. For four of these dwarfs our proper motion estimate is the first ever provided. The adopted astrometric data come from the second data release of the Gaia mission. We determine the mean proper motion for each galaxy starting from an initial guess of likely members, based either on radial velocity measurements or using stars on the Horizontal Branch identified in the Gaia ($G_{\rm BP}$-$G_{\rm…
We have discovered 11 ultra-faint ($r\lesssim 22.1$) low surface brightness (LSB, central surface brightness $23\lesssim μ_r\lesssim 26$) dwarf galaxy candidates in one deep Virgo field of just $576$ arcmin$^2$ obtained by the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Their association with the Virgo cluster is supported by their distinct position in the central surface brightness - total magnitude plane with respect to the background galaxies of similar total magnitude. They have typical absolute magnitudes and scale sizes, if at the distance of Virgo, in the range …
Observational bias against finding Milky Way (MW) dwarf galaxies at low Galactic latitudes (b < 20 deg) and at low surface brightnesses (fainter than 29 mag arcsec^-2, in the V-band) currently limits our understanding of the faintest limits of the galaxy luminosity function. This paper is a proof-of-concept that groups of two or more RR Lyrae stars reveal MW dwarf galaxies at d > 50 kpc in these unmined regions of parameter space, with only modest contamination from interloper groups when large halo structures are excluded. For example, a friends-of-friends (FOF) search with a linking length o…
The ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum~II was enriched by a single rare and prolific r-process event. The r-process content of Reticulum~II thus provides a unique opportunity to study metal mixing in a relic first galaxy. Using multi-object high-resolution spectroscopy with VLT/GIRAFFE and Magellan/M2FS, we identify 32 clear spectroscopic member stars and measure abundances of Mg, Ca, Fe, and Ba where possible. We find $72^{+10}_{-12}$% of the stars are r-process-enhanced, with a mean $\left\langle\mbox{[Ba/H]}\right\rangle=-1.68~\pm~0.07$ and unresolved intrinsic dispersion $σ_{\rm [Ba/H]} < …
We present the first time-series study of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Hercules. Using a variety of telescope/instrument facilities we secured about 50 V and 80 B epochs. These data allowed us to detect and characterize 10 pulsating variable stars in Hercules. Our final sample includes 6 fundamental-mode (ab-type) and 3 first overtone (c-type) RR Lyrae stars, and one Anomalous Cepheid. The average period of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars, < Pab >= 0.68 d (sigma = 0.03 d), places Hercules in the Oosterhoff II group, as found for almost the totality of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies investigated so …
We take deep images of four ultra faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies, Canes Venatici I (CVn I), Bootes I (Boo I), Canes Venatici II (CVn II), and Leo IV using the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. The colour-magitude diagrams (CMDs) extend below the main sequence turn-offs (MSTOs) and yield measurements of the ages of stellar populations. The stellar populations of faint three galaxies, Boo I, CVn II and Leo IV dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are estimated as old as a Galactic globular cluster M92. We confirm that Boo I dSph has no intrinsic colour spread in the MSTO, and no spatial difference in…
We present a new technique to probe the central dark matter (DM) density profile of galaxies that harnesses both the survival and observed properties of star clusters. As a first application, we apply our method to the `ultra-faint' dwarf Eridanus II (Eri II) that has a lone star cluster ~45 pc from its centre. Using a grid of collisional $N$-body simulations, incorporating the effects of stellar evolution, external tides and dynamical friction, we show that a DM core for Eri II naturally reproduces the size and the projected position of its star cluster. By contrast, a dense cusped galaxy req…
Recent observations have been discovering new ultra-faint dwarf galaxies as small as $\sim20~{\rm pc}$ in half-light radius and $\sim3~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$ in line-of-sight velocity dispersion. In these galaxies, dynamical friction on a star against dark matter can be significant and alter their stellar density distribution. The effect can strongly depend on a central density profile of dark matter, i.e. cusp or core. In this study, I perform computations using a classical and a modern analytic formulae and $N$-body simulations to study how dynamical friction changes a stellar density profile and …
We present an AAOmega spectroscopic study of red giant stars in Bootes I, which is an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, and Segue 1, suggested to be either an extremely low-luminosity dwarf galaxy or a star cluster. Our focus is quantifying the mean abundance and abundance dispersion in iron and carbon, and searching for distant radial-velocity members, in these systems. The primary conclusion of our investigation is that the spread of carbon abundance in both Bootes I and Segue 1 is large. For Bootes I, 4 of our 16 velocity members have [C/H] < ~-3.1, while 2 have [C/H] > ~-2.3, suggesting a range of…
We develop, implement and characterise an enhanced data reduction approach which delivers precise, accurate, radial velocities from moderate resolution spectroscopy with the fibre-fed VLT/FLAMES+GIRAFFE facility. This facility, with appropriate care, delivers radial velocities adequate to resolve the intrinsic velocity dispersions of the very faint dSph dwarf galaxies. Importantly, repeated measurements let us reliably calibrate our individual velocity errors ($0.2 \leq δ_V\leq 5$ km s$^{-1}$) and directly detect stars with variable radial velocities. We show, by application to the Bootes-1 dw…
