The ability to prepare non-classical states in a robust manner is essential for quantum sensors beyond the standard quantum limit. We demonstrate that Bayesian optimal control is capable of finding control pulses that drive trapped Rydberg atoms into highly entangled GHZ states. The control sequences have a physically intuitive functionality based on the quasi-integrability of the Ising dynamics. They can be constructed in laboratory experiments resulting in preparation times that scale very favourably with the system size.
Ultra-cold atomic gases are unique in terms of the degree of controllability, both for internal and external degrees of freedom. This makes it possible to use them for the study of complex quantum many-body phenomena. However in many scenarios, the prerequisite condition of faithfully preparing a desired quantum state despite decoherence and system imperfections is not always adequately met. To path the way to a specific target state, we explore quantum optimal control framework based on Bayesian optimization. The probabilistic modeling and broad exploration aspects of Bayesian optimization is…
We report on the observation of Rabi oscillations to a Rydberg state on a timescale below one nanosecond in thermal rubidium vapor. We use a bandwidth-limited pulsed excitation and observe up to 6 full Rabi cycles within a pulse duration of ~ 4 ns. We find good agreement between the experiment and numerical simulations based on a surprisingly simple model. This result shows that fully coherent dynamics with Rydberg states can be achieved even in thermal atomic vapor thus suggesting small vapor cells as a platform for room temperature quantum devices. Furthermore the result implies that previou…
We demonstrate an atomic radio-frequency (RF) receiver and spectrum analyzer based on thermal Rydberg atoms coupled to a planar microwave waveguide. We use an off-resonant RF heterodyne technique to achieve continuous operation for carrier frequencies ranging from DC to 20 GHz. The system achieves an intrinsic sensitivity of up to -120(2) dBm/Hz, DC coupling, 4 MHz instantaneous bandwidth, and over 80 dB of linear dynamic range. By connecting through a low-noise preamplifier, we demonstrate high-performance spectrum analysis with peak sensitivity of better than -145 dBm/Hz. Attaching a standar…
Schemes for creation of N particle entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states are important for understanding multi-particle non-classical correlations. Here, a theoretical scheme for creation of a multi-particle GHZ state implemented on a target ensemble of N, $Λ$ three-level Rydberg atoms and a single Rydberg atom as a control using Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) is presented. We work in the Rydberg blockade regime for the ensemble atoms induced due to excitation of the control atom to a high lying Rydberg level. It is shown that using STIRAP, atoms from one ground state…
The coherent interaction between ensembles of helium Rydberg atoms and microwave fields in the vicinity of a solid-state co-planar waveguide is reported. Rydberg-Rydberg transitions, at frequencies between 25 GHz and 38 GHz, have been studied for states with principal quantum numbers in the range 30 - 35 by selective electric-field ionization. An experimental apparatus cooled to 100 K was used to reduce effects of blackbody radiation. Inhomogeneous, stray electric fields emanating from the surface of the waveguide have been characterized in frequency- and time-resolved measurements and coheren…
We propose a scheme for preparation of large-scale entangled $GHZ$ states and $W$ states with neutral Rydberg atoms. The scheme mainly depends on Rydberg antiblockade effect, i.e., as the Rydberg-Rydberg-interaction (RRI) strength and the detuning between the atom transition frequency and the classical laser frequency satisfies some certain conditions, the effective Rabi oscillation between the two ground states and the two excitation Rydberg states would be generated. The prominent advantage is that both two-multiparticle $GHZ$ states and two-multiparticle $W$ states can be fused in this mode…
Electric field sensors based on Rydberg atoms offer unique capabilities, relative to traditional sensors, for detecting radio-frequency signals. In this work, we demonstrate simultaneous demodulation and detection of five rf tones spanning nearly two decades (6 octaves), from 1.7 GHz to 116 GHz. We show continuous recovery of the phase and amplitude of each tone and report on the system's sensitivity and bandwidth capabilities for multi-band detection. We use these capabilities to demonstrate a digital communication protocol, simultaneously receiving on-off-keyed binary data from four bands sp…

We present evidence for Rydberg-Rydberg interaction in a gas of rubidium atoms above room temperature. Rabi oscillations on the nanosecond timescale to different Rydberg states are investigated in a vapor cell experiment. Analyzing the atomic time evolution and comparing to a dephasing model we find a scaling with the Rydberg quantum number n that is consistent with van der Waals interaction. Our results show that the interaction strength can be larger than the kinetic energy scale (Doppler width) which is the requirement for realization of thermal quantum devices in the GHz regime.
We develop a formalism for photoionization (PI) and potential energy curves (PECs) of Rydberg atoms in ponderomotive optical lattices and apply it to examples covering several regimes of the optical-lattice depth. The effect of lattice-induced PI on Rydberg-atom lifetime ranges from noticeable to highly dominant when compared with natural decay. The PI behavior is governed by the generally rapid decrease of the PI cross sections as a function of angular-momentum ($\ell$), and by lattice-induced $\ell$-mixing across the optical-lattice PECs. In GHz-deep lattices, $\ell$-mixing leads to a rich P…
Inspired by a recent work [Reiter, Reeb, and Sørensen, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf117}, 040501 (2016)], we present a simplified proposal for dissipatively preparing a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state of three Rydberg atoms in a cavity. The $Z$ pumping is implemented under the action of the spontaneous emission of $Λ$-type atoms and the quantum Zeno dynamics induced by strong continuous coupling. In the meantime, a dissipative Rydberg pumping breaks up the stability of the state $|{\rm GHZ}_+\rangle$ in the process of $Z$ pumping, making $|{\rm GHZ}_-\rangle$ be the unique steady state of syst…
Alkaline-earth-like~(AEL) atoms with two valence electrons and a nonzero nuclear spin can be excited to Rydberg state for quantum computing. Typical AEL ground states possess no hyperfine splitting, but unfortunately a GHz-scale splitting seems necessary for Rydberg excitation. Though strong magnetic fields can induce a GHz-scale splitting, weak fields are desirable to avoid noise in experiments. Here, we provide two solutions to this outstanding challenge with realistic data of well-studied AEL isotopes. In the first theory, the two nuclear spin qubit states $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$ are ex…
The multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states are indispensable elements for various quantum information processing tasks. Here we put forward two deterministic proposals to dissipatively prepare tripartite GHZ states in a neutral atom system. The first scheme can be considered as an extension of a recent work [T. M. Wintermantel, Y. Wang, G. Lochead, \textit{et al}, {Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{124}, 070503 (2020)}]. By virtue of the polychromatic driving fields and the engineered spontaneous emission, a multipartite GHZ state with odd numbers of atoms are generated with a high effic…
We present optimal control protocols to prepare different many-body quantum states of Rydberg atoms in optical lattices. Specifically, we show how to prepare highly ordered many-body ground states, GHZ states as well as some superposition of symmetric excitation number Fock states, that inherit the translational symmetry from the Hamiltonian, within sufficiently short excitation times minimizing detrimental decoherence effects. For the GHZ states, we propose a two-step detection protocol to experimentally verify the optimal preparation of the target state based only on standard measurement tec…
Quantum entanglement involving coherent superpositions of macroscopically distinct states is among the most striking features of quantum theory, but its realization is challenging, since such states are extremely fragile. Using a programmable quantum simulator based on neutral atom arrays with interactions mediated by Rydberg states, we demonstrate the deterministic generation of 'Schrödinger cat' states of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) type with up to 20 qubits. Our approach is based on engineering the energy spectrum and using optimal control of the many-body system. We further demon…
Using the quantum-brachistochrone formalism, we address the problem of finding the fastest possible (time-optimal) deterministic conversion between $W$ and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states in a system of three identical and equidistant neutral atoms that are acted upon by four external laser pulses. Assuming that all four pulses are close to being resonant with the same internal (atomic) transition -- the one between the atomic ground state and a high-lying Rydberg state -- each atom can be treated as an effective two-level system ($gr$-type qubit). Starting from an effective system Ha…
A complete set of spectroscopic data is indispensable when using Rydberg states of trapped ions for quantum information processing. We carried out Rydberg series spectroscopy for $nS_{1/2}$ states with $38 \leq n \leq 65$ and for $nD_{5/2}$ states with $37\leq n \leq 50$ on a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion. From a nonlinear regression to resonance frequencies, we determined the ionization energy of 2 870 575.582(15) GHz, measured 60 times more accurately as compared to the accepted value and contradicting it by 7.5 standard deviations. We confirm quantum defect values of $δ_{S_{1/2}}=1.80299…
We investigate the possibilities for a deterministic conversion between two important types of maximally entangled multiqubit states, namely, $W$ and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states, in the Rydberg-blockade regime of a neutral-atom system where each atom is subject to four external laser pulses. Such interconversions between $W$ states and their GHZ counterparts have quite recently been addressed using the method of shortcuts to adiabaticity, more precisely techniques based on Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants [R.-H. Zheng {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 101}, 012345 (2020)]. Motivated in p…

Entangled states are crucial for modern quantum enabled technology which makes their creation key for future developments. In this paper, a robust quantum control methodology is presented to create entangled states of two typical classes, the W and the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ). It was developed from the analysis of a chain of alkali atoms $^{87}Rb $ interaction with laser pulses, which lead to the two-photon transitions from the ground to the Rydberg states with a predetermined magnetic quantum number. The methodology is based on the mechanism of two-photon adiabatic passage using ove…
Motivated by recent progress in the experimental manipulation of cold atoms in optical lattices, we study three different protocols for non-adiabatic quantum state preparation and state transport in chains of Rydberg atoms. The protocols we discuss are based on the blockade mechanism between atoms which, when excited to a Rydberg state, interact through a van der Waals potential, and rely on single-site addressing. Specifically, we discuss protocols for efficient creation of an antiferromagnetic GHZ state, a class of matrix product states including a so-called Rydberg crystal and for the state…
Due to their strong and tunable interactions, Rydberg atoms can be used to realize fast two-qubit entangling gates. We propose a generalization of a generic two-qubit Rydberg-blockade gate to multi-qubit Rydberg-blockade gates which involve both many control qubits and many target qubits simultaneously. This is achieved by using strong microwave fields to dress nearby Rydberg states, leading to asymmetric blockade in which control-target interactions are much stronger than control-control and target-target interactions. The implementation of these multi-qubit gates can drastically simplify bot…
We present a proposal for generation of a robust tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state among three-individual neutral Rydberg atoms. By modulating the relation between two-photon detuning and Rydberg interaction strength $U_{ij}(r)$, an effective Raman coupling is obtained between the hyperfine ground states $|F=2,M=2\rangle$ of three $^{87}$Rb atoms and the Rydberg states $|rrr\rangle$ via the third-order perturbation theory. This method is also capable of implementing a three-qubit controlled-phase gate with each qubit encoded into the hyperfine ground states $|F=1,M=1\rangle$ and $|F…
An optical probe of cesium Rydberg atoms generated in a thermal vapor cell is used to retrieve a baseband signal modulated onto a 16.98-GHz carrier wave in real-time, demonstrating an atom-based quantum receiver suitable for microwave communication. The 60$S_{1/2}$ Rydberg level of cesium atoms in the cell is tracked via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), an established laser-spectroscopic method. The microwave carrier is resonant with the 60$S_{1/2}$ $\rightarrow$ 60$P_{1/2}$ Rydberg transition, resulting in an Autler-Townes (AT) splitting of the EIT signal. Amplitude modulation …
The millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency band provides exciting prospects for quantum science and devices, since many high-fidelity quantum emitters, including Rydberg atoms, molecules and silicon vacancies, exhibit resonances near 100 GHz. High-Q resonators at these frequencies would give access to strong interactions between emitters and single photons, leading to rich and unexplored quantum phenomena at temperatures above 1K. We report a 3D mm-wave cavity with a measured single-photon internal quality factor of $3 \times 10^{7}$ and mode volume of $0.14 \times λ^3$ at $98.2$ GHz, sufficient …

Long-range entangled quantum states -- like cat states and topological order -- are key for quantum metrology and information purposes, but they cannot be prepared by any scalable unitary process. Intriguingly, using measurements as an additional ingredient could circumvent such no-go theorems. However, efficient schemes are known for only a limited class of long-range entangled states, and their implementation on existing quantum devices via a sequence of gates and measurements is hampered by high overheads. Here we resolve these problems, proposing how to scalably prepare a broad range of lo…
In this paper we propose a time-independent \textit{equality} and time-dependent \textit{inequality}, suitable for an experimental test of the hypothesis of realism. The derivation of these relations is based on the concept of conditional probability and on Bayes' theorem in the framework of Kolmogorov's axiomatics of probability theory. The equality obtained is intrinsically different from the well known GHZ-equality and its variants, because violation of the new equality might be tested in experiments with only two microsystems in a maximally entangled Bell state $\big\vert\, Ψ^-\,\big\rangl…
The variational preparation of complex quantum states using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) is of fundamental interest, and becomes a promising application of quantum computers. Here, we systematically study the performance of QAOA for preparing ground states of target Hamiltonians near the critical points of their quantum phase transitions, and generating Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. We reveal that the performance of QAOA is related to the translational invariance of the target Hamiltonian: Without the translational symmetry, for instance due to the open bou…
Metasurfaces mold the flow of classical light waves by engineering sub-wavelength patterns from dielectric or metallic thin films. We describe and analyze a method in which quantum operator-valued reflectivity can be used to control both spatio-temporal and quantum properties of transmitted and reflected light. Such a quantum metasurface is realized by preparing and manipulating entangled superposition states of atomically thin reflectors. Specifically, we show that such a system allows for massively parallel quantum operations between atoms and photons and for the generation of highly non-cla…
State preparation protocols ideally require as minimal operations as possible, in order to be implemented in near-term, potentially noisy quantum devices. Motivated by long range interactions (LRIs) intrinsic to many present-day experimental platforms (trapped ions, Rydberg atom arrays, etc.), we investigate the efficacy of variationally simulating non-trivial quantum states using the Variational Quantum-Classical Simulation (VQCS) protocol explored recently in [SciPost Phys. 6, 029 (2019)], in the presence of LRIs. We show that this approach leads to extremely efficient state preparation: for…
