We study the bi-drifting pulsar B1839-04, where the observed subpulse drift direction in the two leading pulse components is opposite from that in the two trailing components. Such diametrically opposed apparent motions challenge our understanding of an underlying structure. We find that for the geometry spanned by the observer and the pulsar magnetic and rotation axes, the observed bi-drifting in B1839-04 can be reproduced assuming a non-dipolar configuration of the surface magnetic field. Acceptable solutions are found to either have relatively weak $(\sim 10^{12} \,{\rm G})$ or strong $(\sim 10^{14} \,{\rm G})$ surface magnetic fields. Our single pulse modeling shows that a global electric potential variation at the polar cap that leads to a solid-body-like rotation of spark forming regions is favorable in reproducing the observed drift characteristics. This variation of the potential additionally ensures that the variability is identical in all pulse components resulting in the observed phase locking of subpulses. Thorough and more general studies of pulsar geometry show that a low ratio of impact factor to opening angle $(β/ ρ)$ increases the likelihood of bi-drifting to be observed. We thus conclude that bi-drifting is visible when our line of sight crosses close to the magnetic pole.
In this study we propose a classification scheme for the phenomenon of subpulse drifting in pulsars. We have assembled an exhaustive list of pulsars which exhibit subpulse drifting from previously published results as well as recent observations using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope. We have estimated detailed phase variations corresponding to the drifting features. Based on phase behaviour the drifting population was classified into four groups : coherent phase-modulated drifting, switching phase-modulated drifting, diffuse phase-modulated drifting and low-mixed phase-modulated drifting. …
We report a detailed study of subpulse drifting in four long period pulsars. These pulsars were observed in the Meterwavelength Single-pulse Polarimetric Emission Survey and the presence of phase modulated subpulse drifting was reported in each case. We have carried out longer duration and more sensitive observations lasting 7000-12000 periods, between frequency range of 306 and 339 MHz. The drifting features were characterised in great detail including the phase variations across the pulse window. In two pulsars J0820$-$1350 and J1720$-$2933 the phases changed steadily across the pulse window…
We report a detailed observational study of the single pulses from the pulsar J1822$-$2256. The pulsar shows the presence of subpulse drifting, nulling as well as multiple emission modes. During these observations the pulsar existed primarily in two modes; mode A with prominent drift bands and mode B which was more disorderly without any clear subpulse drifting. A third mode C was also seen for a short duration with a different drifting periodicity compared to mode A. The nulls were present throughout the observations but were more frequent during the disorderly B mode. The nulling also exhibi…
Coherent radio emission in pulsars is excited due to instabilities in a relativistically streaming non-stationary plasma flow, which is generated from sparking discharges in the inner acceleration region (IAR) near the stellar surface. A number of detailed works have shown the IAR to be a partially screened gap (PSG) dominated by non-dipolar magnetic fields with continuous outflow of ions from the surface. The phenomenon of subpulse drifting is expected to originate due to variable $\mathbf{E}\times\mathbf{B}$ drift of the sparks in PSG, where the sparks lag behind corotation velocity of the p…
Aims. To make a detailed study of the nulling and subpulse drifting in PSR J1727$-$2739 for investigation of its radiation properties. Methods. The observations were carried out on 20 March, 2004 using the Parkes 64-m radio telescope, with a central frequency of 1518 MHz. A total of 5568 single pulses were analysed. Results. This pulsar shows well defined nulls with lengths lasting from 6 to 281 pulses and separated by burst phases ranging from 2 to 133 pulses. We estimate a nulling fraction of around 68\%. No emission in the average pulse profile integrated over all null pulses is detected wi…
We have carried out a detailed study of single pulse emission from the pulsar B2000+40 (J2002+4050), observed at 1.6 GHz frequencies using the Effelsberg radio telescope. The pulsar has three components which are not well separated, with the central component resembling core emission. We have investigated modulations in single pulse behaviour using the fluctuation spectral analysis which showed presence of two prominent periodicities, around 2.5$P$ and 40$P$, respectively. The shorter periodicity was associated with the phenomenon of subpulse drifting and was seen to be absent in central core …
The phenomenon of subpulse drifting offers unique insights into the emission geometry of pulsars, and is commonly interpreted in terms of a rotating carousel of "spark" events near the stellar surface. We develop a detailed geometric model for the emission columns above a carousel of sparks that is entirely calculated in the observer's inertial frame, and which is consistent with the well-understood rotational effects of aberration and retardation. We explore the observational consequences of the model, including (1) the appearance of the reconstructed beam pattern via the cartographic transfo…
In this paper, we investigate the emission properties of PSR J1727-2739, whose mean pulse profile has two main components, by analysing five single-pulse observations made using the Parkes 64-m radio telescope with a central frequency of 1369 MHz between 2014 April and October. The total observation time is about 6.1 hours which contains 16718 pulses after removal of radio frequency interference (RFI). Previous studies reveal that PSR J1727-2739 exhibits both nulling and subpulse drifting. We estimate the nulling fraction to be 66%, which is consistent with previously published results. In add…
We develop a model for subpulse separation period, $P_2$, taking into account both the apparent motion of the visible point as a function of pulsar phase, $ψ$, and the possibility of abrupt jumps between different rotation states in non-corotating pulsar magnetospheres. We identify three frequencies: (i) the spin frequency of the star, (ii) the drift frequency of the magnetospheric plasma in the source region, and (iii) the angular frequency of the visible point around its trajectory. We show how the last of these, which is neglected in traditional models by implicitly assuming the line of sig…
We report a detailed analysis of the emission behaviour of the five component, core-double cone, pulsar J2006$-$0807 (B2003$-$08). The single pulses revealed the presence of the three major phenomena of subpulse drifting, nulling and mode changing. The pulsar switched between four different emission modes, two of which showed systematic drifting with prominent drift bands, and were classified as modes A and B respectively. The drifting was seen primarily in the conal components and exhibited the rare phenomenon of bi-drifting, where the drift direction in the second component was opposite to t…
The unique and highly unusual drift feature reported for PSR J0815+0939, wherein one component's subpulses drift in the direction opposite of the general trend, is a veritable challenge to pulsar theory. In this paper, we observationally quantify the drift direction throughout its profile, and find that the second component is the only one that exhibits "bi-drifting", meaning that only second component moves in the direction opposite of the others. We here present a model that shows that the observed bi-drifting phenomenon follows from the insight that the discharging regions, i.e. sparks, do …
We present an analysis of the subpulse drift in PSR J1750-3503, which is characterized by abrupt transitions of drift direction. As the pulsar does not exhibit other mode changes or clear nulling, it is an ideal candidate system for studying the phenomenon of drift direction change. For $\sim 80\%$ of the time the subpulses are characterized by positive drift - from early to later longitudes - while the drift direction is negative in the other $\sim 20\%$. The subpulse separation for single pulses with positive drift, $P_2=(18.8\pm 0.1)^{\circ}$, is higher then for single pulses with negative …
In this study, we report on a detailed single pulse polarimetric analysis of the radio emission from the pulsar J2321+6024 (B2319+60) observed with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, over wide frequencies ranging between 300 to 500 MHz and widely separated observing sessions. The pulsar profile shows the presence of four distinct conal components and belongs to a small group of pulsars classified as a conal quadrupole profile type. The single pulse sequence reveals the presence of three distinct emission modes, A, B, and ABN showing subpulse drifting. Besides, there were sequences when the p…
We establish that for PSR B0031-07 the orthogonal polarization modes switch at a single pulse level synchronously with the periodic drifting subpulses seen in total intensity. There are only four other pulsars known for which this phenomenon is observed. PSR B0031-07 is unique as it is the only source in this group which has multiple stable drift modes. For both drift modes visible at our observing frequency centered at 1369 MHz, the modulation of polarization modes is synchronous with the drifting subpulses. In one of the drift modes, a discontinuity in the modulation pattern of polarization …

The usefulness and versatility of the PSRSALSA open-source pulsar data-analysis project is demonstrated through an analysis of the radio pulsar B1839-04. This study focuses on the phenomenon of bi-drifting, an effect where the drift direction of subpulses is systematically different in different pulse profile components. Bi-drifting is extremely rare in the pulsar population. Various tools in PSRSALSA, including those allowing quantification of periodicities in the subpulse modulation, their flux distribution, and polarization properties, are exploited to obtain a comprehensive picture of the …
We derive the exact drift velocity of plasma in the pulsar polar cap, in contrast to the order-of-magnitude expressions presented by Ruderman & Sutherland (1975) and generally used throughout the literature. We emphasize that the drift velocity depends not on the absolute value, as is generally used, but on the variation of the accelerating potential across the polar cap. If we assume that drifting subpulses in pulsars are indeed due to this plasma drift, several observed subpulse-drift phenomena that are incompatible with the Ruderman & Sutherland family of models can now be explained: we sho…

The carousel model of pulsar emission attributes the phenomenon of subpulse drifting to a set of discrete sparks located very near the stellar surface rotating around the magnetic axis. Here, we investigate the subpulse drifting behaviour of PSR B0031-07 in the context of the carousel model. We show that B0031-07's three drift modes (A, B, and C) can be understood in terms of a single carousel rotation rate if the number of sparks is allowed to change by an integral number, and where the different drift rates are due to (first-order) aliasing effects. This also results in harmonically-related …
We report on the subpulse modulation properties of 1198 pulsars using the Thousand-Pulsar-Array programme on MeerKAT. About 35% of the analysed pulsars exhibit drifting subpulses which are more pronounced towards the deathline, consistent with previous studies. We estimate that this common phenomenon is detectable in 60% of the overall pulsar population if high quality data were available for all. This large study reveals the evolution of drifting subpulses across the pulsar population in unprecedented detail. In particular, we find that the modulation period $P_3$ follows a V-shaped evolution…
Periodic modulations are seen in normal period pulsars ($P >$ 0.1 sec) over timescales ranging from a few seconds to several minutes. Such modulations have usually been associated with the phenomenon of subpulse drifting. A number of recent studies have shown subpulse drifting to exhibit very specific physical characteristics : i) drifting is seen only in conal components of the pulse profile and is absent in central core emission; ii) drifting pulsars are distributed over a narrow range of spin-down energy loss ($\dot{E}$), where pulsars with $\dot{E} < 2\times$10$^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ show thi…
Little attention has so far been paid to the division of the observed population between pulsars of the two spin directions that are possible. Almost all pulsars with positive corotational charge density at the polar caps are expected to satisfy space-charge limited flow boundary conditions. Charge separation by blackbody photo-electric transitions in moving ions limits the acceleration potential, analogously with the more usually considered pair creation. But the limitation is more severe so that proton and ion energies can be relativistic but not ultra-relativistic, and these allow the growt…
A large sample of pulsars was observed as part of the Meterwavelength Single-pulse Polarimetric Emission Survey. We carried out a detailed fluctuation spectral analysis which revealed periodic features in 46% pulsars including 22 pulsars where drifting characteristics were reported for the first time. The pulsar population can be categorized into three distinct groups, pulsars which show systematic drift motion within the pulse window, the pulsars showing no systematic drift but periodic amplitude fluctuation and pulsars with no periodic variations. We discovered the dependence of the drifting…
We try to explain the subpulse drift phenomena adopting the space-charge limited flow (SCLF) model and comparing the plasma drift velocity in the inner region of pulsar magnetospheres with the observed velocity of drifting subpulses. We apply the approach described in a recent paper of van Leeuwen & Timokhin (2012), where it was shown that the standard estimation of the subpulse drift velocity through the total value of the scalar potential drop in the inner gap gives inaccurate results, while the exact expression relating the drift velocity to the gradient of the scalar potential should be us…
The subpulse modulation of pulsar radio emission goes to prove that the plasma flow in the open field line tube breaks into isolated narrow streams. I propose a model which attributes formation of streams to the process of the electric current adjustment in the magnetosphere. A mismatch between the magnetospheric current distribution and the current injected by the polar cap accelerator gives rise to reverse plasma flows in the magnetosphere. The reverse flow shields the electric field in the polar gap and thus shuts up the plasma production process. I assume that a circulating system of strea…
Bright single pulses of many radio pulsars show rapid intensity fluctuations (called microstructure) when observed with time resolutions of tens of microseconds. Here, we report an analysis of Arecibo 59.5 $μ$sec-resolution polarimetric observations of 11 P-band and 32 L-band pulsars with periods ranging from 150 msec to 3.7 sec. These higher frequency observations forms the most reliable basis for detailed microstructure studies. Close inspection of individual pulses reveals that most pulses exhibit quasiperiodicities with a well-defined periodicity timescale ($P_μ$). While we find some pulse…
Sub-pulse drifting in pulsar radio emission is considered to be one of the most promising phenomenon for uncovering the underlying physical processes. Here we present a detailed study of such a phenomenon in observations of PSR J1822$-$2256, made using the upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). Observations were made simultaneously using the Band 3 (300-500 MHz) and Band 4 (550-750 MHz) receivers of the uGMRT. The pulsar is known to exhibit subpulse drifting, mode changing, and nulling. Our observations reveal four distinct sub-pulse drifting modes of emission (A, B, C, and D) for t…
A model for pulsars with polar-cap magnetic flux density B antiparallel with rotational spin is described. It recognizes the significance of two elementary processes, proton production in electromagnetic showers and photoelectric transitions in ions accelerated through the blackbody radiation field, which must be present at the polar cap in the antiparallel case, but not for pulsars of the opposite spin direction. The two populations are likely to be indistinguishable observationally until curvature radiation pair creation ceases to be possible. The model generates, and provides a physically r…
We performed simultaneous observations at 326.5 MHz with the Ooty Radio Telescope and at 326, 610 and 1308 MHz with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope for a sample of 12 pulsars, where frequency dependent single pulse behaviour was reported. The single pulse sequences were analysed with fluctuation analysis, sensitive to both the average fluctuation properties (using longitude resolved fluctuation spectrum and two-dimensional fluctuation spectrum) as well as temporal changes in these (using sliding two-dimensional fluctuation spectrum ) to establish concurrent changes in subpulse drifting ove…
Single pulse behaviour of radio pulsars is usually interpreted in terms of the ExB drift of a radio beam. It is shown that antisymmetric arrangement of the radio-bright zones can produce several types of observed single pulse phenomena: the half-cycle jump in subpulse modulation phase, left-right-middle subpulse sequence and switching between the core-dominated and cone-dominated pulsation modes. The geometry can also produce nulling, both sporadic and intermodal. The model implies that the radio-quiet intervals that separate the main pulse and interpulse in PSR B0826-34 correspond to azimutha…
Some radio pulsars show clear drifting subpulses, in which subpulses are seen to drift in pulse longitude in a systematic pattern. Here we examine how the drifting subpulses of PSR B0809+74 evolve with time and observing frequency. We show that the subpulse period (P3) is constant on timescales of days, months and years, and between 14-5100 MHz. Despite this, the shapes of the driftbands change radically with frequency. Previous studies have concluded that, while the subpulses appear to move through the pulse window approximately linearly at low frequencies (< 500 MHz), a discrete step of 180 …
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are a new kind of extragalactic radio transients. Some of them show repeating behaviors. Recent observations indicate that a few repeating FRBs (e.g., FRB 121102) present time--frequency downward drifting patterns and nearly 100$\%$ linear polarization. Following the model of \citet{dai 2016} who proposed that repeating FRBs may originate from a slowly-rotating, old-aged pulsar colliding with an asteroid belt around a stellar-mass object, we focus on the prediction of time--frequency drifting and polarization. In this scenario, the frequency drifting is mainly caused b…
Subpulse modulation has been regarded as one of the most insightful and intriguing aspects of pulsar radio emission. This phenomenon is generally explained by the presence of a carousel of sparks in the polar acceleration gap region that rotates around the magnetic axis due to the E$\times$B drift. While there have been extensive single pulse studies, geometric signatures of the underlying carousel, or lack thereof, in simultaneous multi-frequency observations have remained largely unexplored. This work presents a theoretical account of such expected signatures, particularly that of a geometry…
Analysis of plasma acceleration in pulsars with positive corotational charge density has shown that any element of area on the polar cap is bi-stable: it can be in phases either of pure proton emission or of mixed ions and protons (the ion phase). Ion-phase zones are concentrated near the edge of the polar cap, and are a physical basis for the coherent radio emission observed as components within the mean pulse profile. The state of the polar cap is generally chaotic, but organized linear motion of ion zones in a peripheral band is possible and is the likely source of sub-pulse drift. It is sh…
We report the independent discovery of PSR J0027-1956 with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in the ongoing Southern-sky MWA Rapid Two-meter (SMART) pulsar survey. J0027-1956 has a period of ~1.306 s, a dispersion measure (DM) of ~20.869 pc cm^-3 , and a nulling fraction of ~77%. This pulsar highlights the advantages of the survey's long dwell times (~80 min), which, when fully searched, will be sensitive to the expected population of similarly bright, intermittent pulsars with long nulls. A single-pulse analysis in the MWA's 140-170 MHz band also reveals a complex sub-pulse drifting behavio…
We report detailed investigation of nulling and drifting behavior of two pulsars PSRs J1741-0840 and J1840-0840 observed from the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope at 625 MHz. PSR J1741-840 was found to show nulling fraction (NF) of around 30(5)% while PSR J1840-0840 was shown to have NF of around 50(6)%. We measured drifting behavior from different profile components in PSR J1840-0840 for the first time with the leading component showing drifting with 13.5(0.7) periods while the weak trailing component showed drifting of around 18(1) periods. Large nulling do hamper accuracy of these quantities…
For many years it has been considered puzzling how pulsar radio emission, supposedly created by a circulating carousel of sub-beams, can produce the driftbands demonstrated by PSR J0815+09, and more recently PSR B1839-04, which simultaneously drift in opposing directions. Here we suggest that the carousels of these pulsars, and hence their beams, are not circular but elliptical with axes tilted with respect to the fiducial plane. We show that certain relatively unusual lines of sight can cause bi-drifting to be observed, and a simulation of the two known exemplars is presented. Although bi-dri…
Pulsars show irregularities in their pulsed radio emission that originate from propagation effects and the intrinsic activity of the source. In this work, we investigate the role played by magnetic reconnection and the formation of plasmoids in the pulsar wind current sheet as a possible source of intrinsic pulse-to-pulse variability in the incoherent, high-energy emission pattern. We used a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation of an orthogonal pulsar magnetosphere restricted to the plane perpendicular to the star spin axis. We evolved the solution for several tens of pulsar periods to …
In this study, we report on a detailed single pulse analysis of the radio emission from the pulsar J1401$-$6357 (B1358$-$63) based on data observed with the ultrawideband low-frequency receiver on the Parkes radio telescope. In addition to a weak leading component, the integrated pulse profile features a single-humped structure with a slight asymmetry. The frequency evolution of the pulse profile is studied. Well-defined nulls, with an estimated nulling fraction greater than 2\%, are present across the whole frequency band. No emission is detected with significance above 3$σ$ in the average pu…
The partially screened vacuum gap model (PSG) for the inner acceleration region in normal radio pulsars, a variant of the pure vacuum gap model, attempts to account for the observed thermal X-ray emission from polar caps and the subpulse drifting timescales. We have used this model to explain the presence of death lines, and extreme location of PSR J2144$-$3933 in the $P-\dot{P}$ diagram. This model requires maintaining the polar cap near a critical temperature and the presence of non-dipolar surface magnetic field to form the inner acceleration region. In the PSG model, thermostatic regulatio…
The analysis of radio emission of three new pulsars discovered at the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory is presented. The detailed observations were carried out at a frequency of 111 MHz using the Large Phased Array (LPA) and the standard digital receiver with a total bandwidth is 2.245 MHz and time resolution is 2.46 or 5.12 ms. All pulsars exhibit features of their radiation, the subpulse drift is observed in J0220+3622, the flare activity is exhibited in J0303+2248 and the nulling phenomenon has been detected in J0810+3725.
