Prospects on high-energy source searches based on pattern recognition: Object detection in the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey and catalogue cross-matches
The H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey (HGPS) represents one of the most sensitive surveys of the Galactic Plane at very high energies (VHE, 0.1-100 TeV). However the source detection algorithm of the HGPS pipeline is not well-suited for complex regions, including sources with shell-like morphologies. As an alternative and complementary approach, we have investigated blind search methods for VHE gamma-ray source detection based on well-known and widely used image processing and pattern recognition techniques. Our goal is to build in a short amount of computational time a list of potentially valuable objects without prior case-specific morphological assumptions. We aim to classify and rank the detected objects in order to identify only the most promising source candidates for further multi-wavelength-association searches, dedicated analyses, or deeper observations. In the approach proposed, we extract sparse and pertinent structural information from the significance maps using a edge detection operator. We then apply a Hough circle transform and detect a collection of objects as local maxima in the Hough space. On the basis of morphological parameters we can characterize different object classes. Classification can be used to identify valuable source candidates sharing the characteristics of well-known sources. We show that using these pattern recognition techniques we can detect objects with partial circular symmetry irrespective of a morphological template (e.g. point-like, Gaussian-like, or shell-like). All the shell-type supernova remnants (SNRs) catalogued in the HGPS are associated with at least one detected object. Catalogue cross-matches indicate that several detected objects not catalogued in the HGPS are spatially coincident with multi-wavelength counterparts. Further investigation on the most promising candidates will be conducted in dedicated follow-up analyses.
The high-frequency radio sky, like the gamma-ray sky surveyed by the Fermi satellite, is dominated by flat spectrum radio quasars and BL Lac objects at bright flux levels. To investigate the relationship between radio and gamma-ray emission in extragalactic sources, we have cross-matched the Australia Telescope 20 GHz survey catalog (AT20G) with the Fermi-LAT 1 year Point Source Catalog (1FGL). The 6.0 sr of sky covered by both catalogs (δ < 0\circ, |b| > 1.\circ 5) contains 5890 AT20G radio sources and 604 1FGL gamma-ray sources. The AT20G source positions are accurate to within ~1 arcsec and…
We present the BMW-Chandra source catalogue derived from Chandra ACIS-I observations (exposure time >10ks) public as of March 2003 by using a wavelet detection algorithm (Lazzati et al. 1999; Campana et al. 1999). The catalogue contains a total of 21325 sources, 16758 of which are serendipitous. Our sky coverage in the soft band (0.5-2 keV, S/N =3) is ~8 deg^2 for F_X > 10^-13 erg cm^-2 s-1, and ~2 deg^2 for F_X >10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1. The catalogue contains information on positions, count rates (and errors) in three energy bands. (total, 0.5-7 keV; soft, 0.5-2 keV; and hard, 2-7keV), and in f…
High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) are a particular class of high-energy sources that require multi-wavelength observational efforts to be properly characterised. New identifications and the refinement of previous measurements are regularly published in the literature by independent teams of researchers and might, when they are collected in a catalogue, offer a tool for facilitating further studies of HMXBs. We update previous instances of HMXB catalogues in the Galaxy and provide the community easy access to the most complete set of observables on Galactic HMXBs. In addition to the fixed versio…
Optical time-domain survey has been the dominant means of hunting for rare tidal disruption events (TDEs) in the past decade and remarkably advanced the TDE study. Particularly, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has opened the era of population studies and the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) at the Vera Rubin Observatory (VRO) is believed to further revolutionize the field soon. Here we present the prospects of finding TDEs with another powerful survey to be performed by 2.5-metre Wide-Field Survey Telescope (WFST). The WFST, located in western China, will be the most advance…
Constraints on the number and luminosity of the sources of the cosmic neutrinos detected by IceCube have been set by targeted searches for point sources. We set complementary constraints by using the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) catalogue, which maps the matter distribution of the local Universe. Assuming that the distribution of the neutrino sources follows that of matter we look for correlations between `warm' spots on the IceCube skymap and the 2MRS matter distribution. Through Monte Carlo simulations of the expected number of neutrino multiplets and careful modelling of the detector perfor…
The Survey Science Centre of the XMM-Newton satellite released the first incremental version of the 2XMM catalogue in August 2008 . With more than 220,000 X-ray sources, the 2XMMi was at that time the largest catalogue of X-ray sources ever published and thus constitutes an unprecedented resource for studying the high-energy properties of various classes of X-ray emitters such as AGN and stars. The advent of the 7th release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey offers the opportunity to cross-match two major surveys and extend the spectral energy distribution of many 2XMMi sources towards the optica…

We have investigated a group of unassociated radio sources included in the 3CR cat- alogue to increase the multi-frequency information on them and possibly obtain an identification. We have carried out an observational campaign with the Swift satellite to observe with the UVOT and the XRT telescopes the field of view of 21 bright NVSS sources within the positional uncertainty region of the 3CR sources. Furthermore, we have searched in the recent AllWISE Source Catalogue for infrared sources matching the position of these NVSS sources. We have detected significant emission in the soft X-ray ban…
Gamma-ray Bursts (GRB) were discovered by satellite-based detectors as powerful sources of transient $γ$-ray emission. The Fermi satellite detected an increasing number of these events with its dedicated Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM), some of which were associated with high energy photons $(E > 10\, \mathrm{GeV})$, by the Large Area Telescope (LAT). More recently, follow-up observations by Cherenkov telescopes detected very high energy emission $(E > 100\, \mathrm{GeV})$ from GRBs, opening up a new observational window with implications on the interpretation of their central engines and on the…
We present the source associations, cross-identifications, and multi-wavelength properties of the faint radio source population detected in the deep tier of the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS): the LoTSS Deep Fields. The first LoTSS Deep Fields data release consists of deep radio imaging at 150~MHz of the ELAIS-N1, Lockman Hole, and Boötes fields, down to RMS sensitives of around 20, 22, and 32$~μ$Jy\,beam$^{-1}$, respectively. These fields are some of the best studied extra-galactic fields in the northern sky, with existing deep, wide-area panchromatic photometry from X-ray to infrared wav…
We release the AllWISE counterparts and Gaia matches to 106,573 and 17,665 X-ray sources detected in the ROSAT 2RXS and XMMSL2 surveys with |b|>15. These are the brightest X-ray sources in the sky, but their position uncertainties and the sparse multi-wavelength coverage until now rendered the identification of their counterparts a demanding task with uncertain results. New all-sky multi-wavelength surveys of sufficient depth, like AllWISE and Gaia, and a new Bayesian statistics based algorithm, NWAY, allow us, for the first time, to provide reliable counterpart associations. NWAY extends prev…
The normalized excess variance is a popular method used by many authors to estimate the variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), especially in the X-ray band. We show that this estimator is affected by the cosmological time dilation, so that it should be appropriately corrected when applied to AGN samples distributed in wide redshift intervals. We propose a formula to modify this estimator, based on the use of the structure function. To verify the presence of the cosmological effect and the reliability of the proposed correction, we use data extracted from the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Sou…
The equation of state plays a critical role in the physics of the merger of two neutron stars. Recent numerical simulations with microphysical equation of state suggest the outcome of such events depends on the mass of the neutron stars. For less massive systems, simulations favor the formation of a hypermassive, quasi-stable neutron star, whose oscillations produce a short, high frequency burst of gravitational radiation. Its dominant frequency content is tightly correlated with the radius of the neutron star, and its measurement can be used to constrain the supranuclear equation of state. In…

We study the prospects for discriminating between the dark matter (DM) and pulsar origin of the PAMELA positron excess with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer AMS-02. We simulate the response of AMS-02 to positrons (and electrons) originating from DM annihilations, and determine the pulsar parameters (spin-down luminosity, distance and characteristic age) that produce a satisfactory fit to the mock AMS-02 data. It turns out that it is always possible to mimic a DM signal with pulsars. Although the fit in some cases requires values of spin-down luminosity and characteristic age different from thos…
Cosmic Rays (CRs) interact with the diffuse gas, radiation, and magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM) to produce electromagnetic emissions that are a significant component of the all-sky flux across a broad wavelength range. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has measured these emissions at GeV $γ$-ray energies with high statistics. Meanwhile, the High-Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) telescope array has observed large-scale Galactic diffuse emission in the TeV $γ$-ray energy range. The emissions observed at GeV and TeV energies are connected by the common origin of the CR pa…
