We study the effect of surfactant on the dynamics of a bubble bursting through an interface. We perform fully three-dimensional direct numerical simulations using a hybrid interface-tracking/level-set method accounting for surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses, sorption kinetics, and diffusive effects. We select an initial bubble shape corresponding to a large Laplace number and a vanishingly small Bond number in order to neglect gravity, and isolate the effects of surfactant on the flow. Our results demonstrate that the presence of surfactant affects the dynamics of the system through Marangoni-induced flow, driving motion from high to low concentration regions, which is responsible for the onset of a recirculation zone close to the free surface. These Marangoni stresses rigidify the interface, delay the cavity collapse, and influence the jet breakup process.
This project aims to study the sedimentation of a surfactant-laden drop in a liquid with particles. A 2D simulation is performed with MATLAB. The interface is captured by the front-tracking method. The local viscosity depends on the local particle concentration, which follows a power law. The surfactants not only decrease the surface tension but also induce a surface tension gradient. If the surface tension decreases, the settling velocity will decrease due to a larger deformation of the drop (i.e., the drop becomes more flat). Additionally, increasing the Peclet number (ratio of convection to…
The dynamics of ligaments retracting under the action of surface tension occurs in a multitude of natural and industrial applications, such as inkjet printing and atomisation. We perform fully three-dimensional, two-phase direct numerical simulations of the retraction dynamics with soluble surfactants. A full parametric study is performed using a hybrid interface-tracking/level-set method, which is utilised to treat the interface; this method is capable of capturing faithfully the topological transitions that are a feature of the flow over a certain range of ligament aspect ratios and Ohnesorg…
The motion of a surfactant-laden viscous droplet in the presence of background non-isothermal Poiseuille flow is studied analytically and numerically. Specifically, the effect of interfacial Marangoni stress due to non-uniform distribution of surfactants and temperature at the droplet interface on the velocity and direction of motion of the droplet along the centerline of imposed Poiseuille flow is investigated in the presence of linearly varying temperature field. In the absence of thermal convection, fluid inertia and shape deformation, the interfacial transport of bulk-insoluble surfactants…
The present study deals with the effect of interfacial slip on the deformation and emulsion rheology of a dilute suspension of droplets in a linear flow. The droplets are laden with surfactants that are bulk-insoluble and get transported only along the interface. An asymptotic approach is adopted for the present analysis in order to tackle the nonlinearity present due to deformation of droplets. The analysis is carried out under two different limiting scenarios namely: surface diffusion-dominated-surfactant transport and surface convection-dominated surfactant transport. For either of the limi…
The sedimentation of a surfactant-laden deformable viscous drop acted upon by an electric field is considered theoretically. The convection of surfactants in conjunction with the the combined effect electrohydrodynamic flow and sedimentation leads to a locally varying surface tension, which subsequently alters the drop dynamics via the interplay of Marangoni, Maxwell and hydrodynamic stresses. Assuming small capillary number and small electric Reynolds number, we employ a regular perturbation technique to solve the coupled system of governing equations. It is shown that when a leaky dielectric…
The motion of a viscous droplet in unbounded Poiseuille flow under the combined influence of bulk-insoluble surfactant and linearly varying temperature field aligned in the direction of imposed flow is studied analytically. Neglecting fluid inertia, thermal convection and shape deformation, asymptotic analysis is performed to obtain the velocity of a force-free surfactant-laden droplet. The present study is focused on two limiting situations of surfactant transport: (i) small surface Peclet number, and (ii) high surface Peclet number. Thermocapillary-induced Marangoni stress, strength of which…
In the present study we analytically investigate the deformation and bulk rheology of a dilute emulsion of surfactant-laden droplets suspended in a linear flow. We use an asymptotic approach to predict the effect of surfactant distribution on the deformation of a single droplet as well as the effective shear and extensional viscosity for the dilute emulsion. The non-uniform distribution of surfactants due to the bulk flow results in the generation of a Marangoni stress which affects both the deformation as well as the bulk rheology of the suspension. The present analysis is done for the limiti…
Bubble bursting at the surface of the sea water produce drops and is the main source of sea spay aerosol. The mechanisms underlying the drops production from a single bubble bursting event have been intensively studied and the influence of the bubble size and liquid parameters (density, viscosity and surface tension) has been unified. However, despite the diversity of the surfactant molecules present in the oceans, their influence has been overlooked. In this paper we experimentally explore the influence of the surfactant concentration (Sodium Dodecyl Surfate - SDS) in a water solution on a si…
The motion of a viscous deformable droplet suspended in an unbounded Poiseuille flow in the presence of bulk-insoluble surfactants is studied analytically. Assuming the convective transport of fluid and heat to be negligible, we perform a small-deformation perturbation analysis to obtain the droplet migration velocity. The droplet dynamics strongly depends on the distribution of surfactants along the droplet interface, which is governed by the relative strength of convective transport of surfactants as compared with the diffusive transport of surfactants. The present study is focused on the fo…
Understanding and modulating the cross-stream motion of a surfactant-coated droplet in pressure driven flow has great implications in many practical applications. A combination of interfacial viscosity and Marangoni stress acting over a surfactant-coated droplet in pressure driven flow offers greater flexibility to modulate the cross-stream motion of it. Despite the intense theoretical and numerical research towards manipulating the surfactant-laden Newtonian droplets in Poiseuille flow, the experimental investigations are seldom explored. Herein, we report our study on understanding the influ…
We present a parametric study of the unsteady phenomena associated with the flow of elongated gas bubbles travelling through liquid-filled square capillaries under high Weber number conditions. These conditions consistently induce the formation of a re-entrant jet at the back of the bubble that commonly gives way to a deep liquid cavity. Subsequent steps include pinch-off events in the cavity to generate one or multiple encapsulated drops which may coalesce, in conjunction with the bursting of the bubble-liquid interface by either the cavity or the drops. Some of these interfacial instabilitie…
We report a new effect of surfactants in pinning a drop contact line, specifically that lysozyme promotes while lauryl sulfate inhibits pinning. We explain the pinning disparity assuming difference in wetting: the protein-laden drop wets a "clean" surface and the surfactant-laden drop wets an auto-precursored surface.
Electro-osmosis (EO) is a powerful tool to manipulate liquids in micro and nanofluidic systems. While EO has been studied extensively at liquid-solid interfaces, the case of liquid-vapor interfaces, found e.g. in foam films and bubbles, remains to be explored. Here we perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of EO in a film of aqueous electrolyte covered with fluid layers of ionic surfactants and surrounded by gas. Following the experimental procedure, we compute the zeta potential from the EO velocity, defined as the velocity difference between the middle of the liquid film and the surroun…
In the present study, we investigate the cross-stream migration of a deformable droplet suspended in a non-isothermal Poiseuille flow in the presence of bulk-insoluble surfactants. Owing to the non-linearity present in the system of governing equations, an asymptotic approach is adopted, in an effort to capture the intricate and non-trivial coupling between the various influencing parameters. With the assumption of negligible inertia in fluid flow and convective transport of thermal energy, we obtain the droplet migration velocity through small-deformation perturbation analysis for two differe…
We study the features of a radial Stokes flow due to a submerged jet directed toward a liquid-air interface. The presence of surface-active impurities confers to the interface an in-plane elasticity that resists the incident flow. Both analytical and numerical calculations show that a minute amount of surfactants is enough to profoundly alter the morphology of the flow. The hydrodynamic response of the interface is affected as well, shifting from slip to no-slip boundary condition as the surface compressibility decreases. We argue that the competition between the divergent outward flow and the…
The surface shear viscosity of an insoluble surfactant monolayer often depends strongly on its surface pressure. Here, we show that a particle moving within a bounded monolayer breaks the kinematic reversibility of low-Reynolds-number flows. The Lorentz reciprocal theorem allows such irreversibilities to be computed without solving the full nonlinear equations, giving the leading-order contribution of surface-pressure-dependent surface viscosity. In particular, we show that a disk translating or rotating near an interfacial boundary experiences a force in the direction perpendicular to that bo…
Thin liquid films are central to everyday life. They are ubiquitous in modern technology (pharmaceuticals, coatings), consumer products (foams, emulsions) and also serve vital biological functions (tear film of the eye, pulmonary surfactants in the lung). A common feature in all these examples is the presence of surface-active molecules at the air-liquid interface. Though they form only molecularly-thin layers, these surfactants produce complex surface stresses on the free surface, which have important consequences for the dynamics and stability of the underlying thin liquid film. Here we cond…
We report a numerical analysis of the unforced break-up of free cylindrical threads of viscous Newtonian liquid whose interface is coated with insoluble surfactants, focusing on the formation of satellite droplets. The initial conditions are harmonic disturbances of the cylindrical shape with a small amplitude $ε$, and whose wavelength is the most unstable one deduced from linear stability theory. We demonstrate that, in the limit $ε\to 0$, the problem depends on two dimensionless parameters, namely the Laplace number, $La=ρσ_0 \bar{R}/μ^2$, and the elasticity parameter, $β=E/σ_0$, where $ρ$, …
Atmospheric aerosols can consist of inorganic and organic substances, including surfactants at a significant concentration. Importantly, the latter can reduce the surface tension at the liquid-vapor surfaces, where they preferentially adsorb due to their amphiphilic structure. As a result, processes such as droplet coalescence, development of precipitation and ultimately cloud lifetime, may depend on the presence of surfactants in the aerosols. Here, we present a numerical model for cloud droplet formation, which is based on the Lagrangian particle-based microphysics-scheme super-droplet metho…
Nanofluids hold promise for a wide range of areas of industry. However, understanding of wetting behavior and deposition formation in course of drying and spreading of nanofluids, particularly containing surfactants, is still poor. In this paper, the evaporation dynamics of quantum dot-based nanofluids and evaporation-driven self-assembly in nanocolloidal suspensions on hexamethyldisilazane-, polystyrene-, and polypropylene-coated hydrophobic surfaces have been studied experimentally. Moreover, for the very first time, we make a step to understanding of wetting dynamics of superspreader surfac…

The surfactant-driven spreading of droplets is an essential process in many applications ranging from coating flow technology to enhanced oil recovery. Despite the significant advancement in describing spreading processes in surfactant-laden droplets, including the exciting phenomena of superspreading, many features of the underlying mechanisms require further understanding. Here, we have carried out molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model with a force-field obtained from the statistical associating fluid theory to study droplets laden with common and superspreading surfactant…
We study the effect of surfactants on the dynamics of a drop-interface coalescence using full three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We employ a hybrid interface-tracking/level-set method, which takes into account Marangoni stresses that arise from surface tension gradients, interfacial and bulk diffusion, and sorption kinetic effects. We validate our predictions against the experimental data of Blanchette and Bigioni [Nat. Phys. 2(4):254-257 (2006)] and perform a parametric study that demonstrates the delicate interplay between the flow fields and those associated with the surfactant…
The presence of even small amount of surfactant at the particle-laden fluid interface subjected to shear makes surface flow incompressible if the shear rate is small enough [T. M. Fischer et al, J. Fluid Mech. 558, 451 (2006)]. In the present paper the effective surface shear viscosity of a flat, low-concentration, particle-laden incompressible interface separating two immiscible fluids is calculated. The resulting value is found to be 7.6% larger than the value obtained without account for surface incompressibility.
The linear instability of a surfactant-laden two-layer falling film over an inclined slippery wall is analyzed under an influence of external shear which is imposed on the top surface of the flow. The free surface of the flow as well as the interface among the fluids are contaminated by insoluble surfactants. Dynamics of both the layers are governed by the Navier--Stokes equations, and the surfactant transport equation regulates the motion of the insoluble surfactants at the interface and free surface. Instability mechanisms are compared by imposing the external shear along and opposite to the…
The bursting of bubbles at an air/liquid interface is a familiar occurrence important to foam stability, cell cultures in bioreactors and mass transfer between the sea and atmosphere. Here we document the hitherto unreported formation and dispersal into the water column of submicrometre oil droplets following bubble bursting at a compound air/oil/water-with-surfactant interface. We show that dispersal results from the detachment of an oil spray from the bottom of the bubble towards water during bubble collapse. We provide evidence that droplet size is selected by physicochemical interactions b…
