The properties of low-mass neutron stars with rigid rotation are considered. The possible evolution paths of such stars in a close binary system with mass transfer are calculated. The properties of the gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A interpreted in terms of the stripping model, a natural ingredient of which is the explosion of a low-mass neutron star - a binary component, are briefly discussed.
Implementing a family of differential rotation laws inspired by binary neutron-star merger remnants, we consider the impact of the rotation profile on the low-T/W instability. We use time evolutions of the linearised dynamical equations, in Newtonian gravity, to study non-axisymmetric oscillations and identify the unstable modes. The presence and evolution of the low-T/W instability is monitored with the canonical energy and angular momentum, while the growth time is extracted from the evolved kinetic energy. The results for the new rotation laws highlight similarities with the commonly consid…
In recent years, accreting neutron stars (NSs) in X-ray binary systems in supernova remnants have been discovered. They are a puzzle for the standard magneto-rotational evolution of NSs, as their age ($\lesssim 10^5$ years) is much less than expected duration of the preceding Ejector and Propeller stages. To explain such systems, we consider rotational evolution of NSs with fallback accretion and asymmetry in direct/backward transitions between Ejector and Propeller stages. It is shown that at certain values of the initial period and the magnetic field, a young neutron star may not enter the E…
Gravitational waves provide a unique and powerful opportunity to constrain the dynamics in the interior of proto-neutron stars during core collapse supernovae. Convective motions play an important role in generating neutron stars magnetic fields, which could explain magnetar formation in the presence of fast rotation. We compute the gravitational wave emission from proto-neutron star convection and its associated dynamo, by post-processing three-dimensional MHD simulations of a model restricted to the convective zone in the anelastic approximation. We consider two different proto-neutron star …
Our understanding of the convective-engine paradigm driving core-collapse supernovae has been used for 2 decades to predict the remnant mass distribution from stellar collapse. These predictions improve as our understanding of this engine increases. In this paper, we review our current understanding of convection (in particular, the growth rate of convection) in stellar collapse and study its effect on the remnant mass distribution. We show how the depth of the mass gap between neutron stars and black holes can help probe this convective growth. We include a study of the effects of stochastici…
Merging neutron stars are expected to produce hot, metastable remnants in rapid differential rotation, which subsequently cool and evolve into rigidly rotating neutron stars or collapse to black holes. Studying this metastable phase and its further evolution is essential for the prediction and interpretation of the electromagnetic, neutrino, and gravitational signals from such a merger. In this work, we model binary neutron star merger remnants and propose new rotation and thermal laws that describe post-merger remnants. Our framework is capable to reproduce quasi-equilibrium configurations fo…
We investigate the form of the radiation emitted by an axion star-neutron star binary using a $f(r)=\text{sech(r/R)}$ profile for the axion star. Our analysis takes into account the co-rotating plasma of the neutron star. We find that that there is significant enhancement to the radiated power if the neutron star's spin is tilted towards the plane of the axion star-neutron star orbit, compared to the case where it is perpendicular. We also examine whether the neutron star's co-rotating plasma can play a role in the emitted power and we find that even though dilute axion stars can in principle …

The coupling between the angular momentum of a compact object and an external tidal field gives rise to the "rotational" tidal Love numbers, which affect the tidal deformability of a spinning self-gravitating body and enter the gravitational waveform of a binary inspiral at high post-Newtonian order. We provide numerical evidence for a surprising "hidden" symmetry among the rotational tidal Love numbers with opposite parities, which are associated to perturbations belonging to separate sectors. This symmetry, whose existence had been suggested on the basis of a Lagrangian description of the ti…
We calculate the finite-temperature r-mode spectrum of a superfluid neutron star accounting for both muons in the core and the entrainment between neutrons and protons. We show that the standard perturbation scheme, considering the rotation rate as an expansion parameter, breaks down in this case. We develop an original perturbation scheme which circumvents this problem by treating both the perturbations due to rotation and (weak) entrainment simultaneously. Applying this scheme, we propose a simple method for calculating the superfluid r-mode eigenfrequency in the limit of vanishing rotation …

The gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star merger carries the imprint of the deformability properties of the coalescing bodies, and then of the equation of state of neutron stars. In current models of the waveforms emitted in these events, the contribution of tidal deformation is encoded in a set of parameters, the tidal Love numbers. More refined models include tidal-rotation couplings, described by an additional set of parameters, the rotational tidal Love numbers, which appear in the waveform at $6.5$ post-Newtonian order. For neutron stars with spins as large as $\sim0.1$, we…
