From a gauge $SU(2,2|2)$ model with broken supersymmetry, we construct an action for $SU(2)\times U(1)$ Yang-Mills theory coupled to gravity and matter. The connection components for AdS boosts and special conformal translations are auxiliary fields and their fixing reduces the theory to two distintive sectors: a vector-like gauge theory with general relativity and a chiral gauge theory where gravity drops out. We discuss some of the main classical features of the model such as the predicted tree level gauge couplings, cosmological constant value, mass-like terms and the Einstein equations.
In this paper we perform, in the spirit of the holographic correspondence, a particular asymptotic limit of N=2, AdS_4 supergravity to N=2 supergravity on a locally AdS_3 boundary. Our boundary theory enjoys OSp(2|2) x SO(1,2) invariance and is shown to contain the D=3 super-Chern Simons OSp(2|2) theory considered in [Alvarez:2011gd] and featuring "unconventional local supersymmetry". The model constructed in that reference describes the dynamics of a spin-1/2 Dirac field in the absence of spin 3/2 gravitini and was shown to be relevant for the description of graphene, near the Dirac points, f…
We propose a scenario where the effects of dislocations, in bidimensional Dirac materials at low energies, can be described within a Dirac field theory by a vertex proportional to the totally antisymmetric component of the torsion generated by such dislocations. The well-known geometrical obstruction to have a nonzero torsion term of that kind in this two-dimensional settings is overcome through exotic time-loops, obtained from ingeniously manipulated particle-hole dynamics. If such torsion/dislocation is indeed present, a net flow of particles-antiparticles (holes) can be inferred and possibl…
We derive a $2+1$ dimensional model with unconventional supersymmetry at the boundary of an ${\rm AdS}_4$ $\mathcal{N}$-extended supergravity, generalizing previous results. The (unconventional) extended supersymmetry of the boundary model is instrumental in describing, within a top-down approach, the electronic properties of graphene-like 2D materials at the two Dirac points, ${\bf K}$ and ${\bf K}'$. The two valleys correspond to the two independent sectors of the ${\rm OSp}(p|2)\times {\rm OSp}(q|2)$ boundary model in the $p=q$ case, which are related by a parity transformation. The Semenof…
We propose an action describing chiral fermions with an arbitrary gauge group and with manifest $(8,0)$ worldsheet supersymmetry. The form of the action is inspired by and adapted for completing the twistor-like formulation of the $D=10$ heterotic superstring.
We study the equations of the motion for Nambu-Goldstone (NG) fermions in the nonlinear representation of supersymmetry (NLSUSY) and show in N-extended NLSUSY that those equations under massless conditions are satisfied, provided the NG fermions are chiral eigenstates. The physical significance of the result is discussed in the context of NLSUSY general relativity through the relations between nonlinear and linear SUSY theories, which gives a new insight into the chiral symmetry for the low energy particle physics.
We dispute a recent claim for a nonperturbative nonrenormalisation theorem stating that mass cannot be spontaneously generated in supersymmetric QED. We also extend a long-standing perturbative result, namely that the effective potential is zero to all orders of perturbation theory, to the nonperturbative regime for arbitrary numbers of flavours.
The fractional supersymmetry chiral algebras in two-dimensional conformal field theory are extended Virasoro algebras with fractional spin currents. We show that associativity and closure of these algebras determines their structure constants in the case that the Virasoro algebra is extended by precisely one current. We compute the structure constants of these algebras explicitly and we show that correlators of the currents satisfy non-Abelian braiding relations.
We have constructed the N=1/2 supersymmetric general Abelian model with asymmetric chiral couplings. This leads to a N=1/2 supersymmetrization of the Schwinger model. We show that the supersymmetric general model is plagued with problems of infrared divergence. Only the supersymmetric chiral Schwinger model is free from such problems and is dynamically equivalent to the chiral Schwinger model because of the peculiar structure of the N=1/2 multiplets.
We discuss supersymmetry breaking via 3-form fluxes in chiral supersymmetric type IIB orientifold vacua with D3- and D7-branes. After a general discussion of possible choices of fluxes allowing for stabilizing of a part of the moduli, we determine the resulting effective action including all soft supersymmetry breaking terms. We also extend the computation of our previous work concerning the matter field metrics arising from various open string sectors, in particular focusing on the 1/2 BPS D3/D7-brane configuration. Afterwards, the F-theory lift of our constructions is investigated.
We present a unified description of the quantum Hall effect in graphene on the basis of the 8-component Dirac Hamiltonian and the supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics. It is remarkable that the zero-energy state emerges because the Zeeman splitting is exactly as large as the Landau level separation, as implies that the SUSY is a good symmetry. For nonzero energy states, the up-spin state and the down-spin state form a supermultiplet possessing the spin SU(2) symmetry. We extend the Dirac Hamiltonian to include two indices $j_{\uparrow}$ and $j_{\downarrow}$, characterized by the dispersion …
We construct quantized free superfields and represent them as operator-valued distributions in Fock space starting with Majorana fields. The perturbative construction of the S-matrix for interacting theories is carried through by extending the causal method of Epstein and Glaser to superspace. We propose a scaling and singular order of distributions in superspace by a procedure which scales both commutative and non-commutative variables. Using this singular order the chiral (Wess-Zumino) model appears to be super-renormalizable.
A sigma model with four-dimensional target space parametrized by chiral and twisted chiral N=(2,2) superfields can be extended to N=(4,4) supersymmetry off-shell, but this is not true for a model of semichiral fields, where the N=(4,4) supersymmetry can only be realized on-shell. The two models can be related to each other by T-duality. In this paper we perform a duality transformation from a chiral and twisted chiral model with off-shell N=(4,4) supersymmetry to a semichiral model. We find that additional non-linear terms must be added to the original transformations to obtain a semichiral mo…
In the framework of N=2 conformal supergravity in four dimensions, we introduce a nilpotent chiral superfield suitable for the description of partial supersymmetry breaking in maximally supersymmetric spacetimes. As an application, we construct Maxwell-Goldstone multiplet actions for partial N=2 --> N=1 supersymmetry breaking on R x S^3, AdS_3 x S^1 (or its covering AdS_3 x R), and a pp-wave spacetime. In each of these cases, the action coincides with a unique curved-superspace extension of the N=1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action, which is singled out by the requirement of U(1) duality invar…
We derive the general supertrace formula for a system with $N$ chiral superfields and one nilpotent chiral superfield in global and local supersymmetry. The nilpotent multiplet is realized by taking the scalar-decoupling limit of a chiral superfield breaking supersymmetry spontaneously. As we show, however, the modified formula is not simply related to the scalar-decoupling limit of the supertrace in linearly-realized supersymmetry. We also show that the supertrace formula reduces to that of a linearly realized supersymmetric theory with a decoupled sGoldstino if the Goldstino is the fermion i…
Supersymmetry breaking by the quantum deformation of a classical moduli space is considered. A simple, non-chiral, renormalizable model is presented to illustrate this mechanism. The well known, chiral, $SU(3) \times SU(2)$ model and its generalizations are shown to break supersymmetry by this mechanism in the limit $Λ_2 \gg Λ_3$. Other supersymmetry breaking models, with classical flat directions that are only lifted quantum mechanically, are presented. Finally, by integrating in vector matter, the strongly coupled region of chiral models with a dynamically generated superpotential is shown t…
We use nonlinear realizations to describe the spontaneous breaking of $N=2$ supersymmetry to $N=1$ in four dimensions. We identify the Goldstone multiplet with an $N=1$ chiral superfield, and show that chiral $N=1$ matter is consistent with the partially broken $N=2$ supersymmetry. We find that the chiral matter can be in any representation of the gauge group; no mirror particles are required. We present the Goldstone action and the general couplings to $N=1$ matter to the first nontrivial order in the scale of symmetry breaking.
The Dirac Hamiltonian formalism is applied to a system in $(2+1)$-dimensions consisting of a Dirac field $ψ$ minimally coupled to Chern-Simons $U(1)$ and $SO(2,1)$ connections, $A$ and $ω$, respectively. This theory is connected to a supersymmetric Chern-Simons form in which the gravitino has been projected out (unconventional supersymmetry) and, in the case of a flat background, corresponds to the low energy limit of graphene. The separation between first-class and second-class constraints is performed explicitly, and both the field equations and gauge symmetries of the Lagrangian formalism a…

We investigate higher-dimensional analogues of the $bc$ systems of 2D RCFT. When coupled to gauge fields and Beltrami differentials defining integrable holomorphic structures the $bc$ partition functions can be explicitly evaluated using anomalies and holomorphy. The resulting induced actions generalize the chiral algebras of 2D RCFT to $2n$ dimensions. Moreover, $bc$ systems in four and six dimensions are closely related to supersymmetric matter. In particular, we show that $d=4, \mathcal{N}=2$ hypermultiplets induce a theory of self-dual Yang-Mills fields coupled to self-dual gravity. In thi…
Due to chiral supersymmetry the (nonzero mode) spectral and symmetry properties of a 4-dimensional, self-dual Dirac-Yang-Mills operator $\D$ can be recovered from those of the corresponding scalar Laplacian $D^2$. It is shown that a similar result holds for higher spins, and that in the 4-vector case the super-symmetric partners are $-D^21_4$ and the fluctuation operator. The reduction to $D^2$ is used to simplify previous analyses of the (nonzero mode) spectrum of $\D$ and of the fluctuations for a BPS-monopole, and to explain the Kepler and su(2/2) (super)symmetries of a system studied recen…
We study supersymmetry breaking from a complex linear superfield coupled to 4D N=1 supergravity. The theory has two classically decoupled vacua, one supersymmetric and one with broken and intrinsically non-linear supersymmetry. Depending on the values of the parameters the scalar potential can lead to no-scale Minkwoski or a stable de Sitter or anti-de Sitter vacuum. We also provide a dual description of the system in terms of a nilpotent chiral superfield and a standard chiral coupled to supergravity.
Chiral superfields with multiple dotted Lorentz spinor indices (`dotspinors') are important in the analysis of supersymmetry breaking through the mechanisms of Cybersusy. This paper describes the actions for massive dotspinors coupled to supersymmetric gauge theory and to chiral matter. It analyzes the free equations of motion and mass spectra for the case of unbroken supersymmetry. The general form of the Cybersusy algebra for dotsupers with multiple indices is also discussed briefly.
We propose an algebraic lattice supersymmetry formulation which has an exact supersymmetry on the lattice. We show how lattice version of chiral conditions can be imposed to satisfy an exact lattice supersymmetry algebra. The species doublers of chiral fermions and the corresponding bosonic counterparts can be accommodated to fit into chiral supermultiplets of lattice supersymmetry and thus lattice chiral fermion problem does not appear. We explicitly show how N=2 Wess-Zumino model in one and two dimensions can be formulated to keep exact supersymmetry for all super charges on the lattice. The…
We report on investigations of local (and non-local) charges in bosonic and supersymmetric principal chiral models in 1+1 dimensions. In the bosonic PCM there is a classically conserved local charge for each symmetric invariant tensor of the underlying group. These all commute with the non-local Yangian charges. The algebra of the local charges amongst themselves is rather more subtle. We give a universal formula for infinite sets of mutually commuting local charges with spins equal to the exponents of the underlying classical algebra modulo its Coxeter number. Many of these results extend to …
We prove that the Wess-Zumino model breaks supersymmetry in the low-energy limit. The mechanism is identical to the breaking of chiral symmetry in quantum chromodynamics as the low-energy limit is a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and the gap equation has a solution. This happens at a critical coupling at lower momenta. Instanton liquid plays an essential role in the behavior of the theory in this limit.
We study dynamical supersymmetry breaking in supersymmetric QCD theories for $N_f<N_c$. We consider a model with a singlet chiral superfield coupled to the infrared meson chiral superfield through a classical superpotential. We examine the vacuum structure of this model and show that in a particular limit of the parameter space with the large $N_c$ limit, it has a vacuum that dynamically breaks supersymmetry. The supersymmetric vacuum, in this limit, is being pushed to infinity.
A graphical representation of supersymmetry is presented. It clearly expresses the chiral flow appearing in SUSY quantities, by representing spinors by {\it directed lines} (arrows). The chiral suffixes are expressed by the directions (up, down, left, right) of the arrows. The SL(2,C) invariants are represented by {\it wedges}. We are free from the messy symbols of spinor suffixes. The method is applied to the 5D supersymmetry. Many applications are expected. The result is suitable for coding a computer program and is highly expected to be applicable to various SUSY theories (including Supergr…
We present a derivation of the chiral ring relations, arising in ${\cal N}=1$ gauge theories in the presence of (anti-)self-dual background gravitational field $G_{αβγ}$ and graviphoton field strength $F_{αβ}$. These were previously considered in the literature in order to prove the relation between gravitational F-terms in the gauge theory and coefficients of the topological expansion of the related matrix integral. We consider the spontaneous breaking of ${\cal N} =2$ to ${\cal N} =1$ supergravity coupled to vector- and hyper-multiplets, and take a rigid limit which keeps a non-trivial $G_{α…

Self-dual gauge potentials admit supersymmetric couplings to higher-spin fields satisfying interacting forms of the first order Dirac--Fierz equation. The interactions are governed by conserved currents determined by supersymmetry. These super-self-dual Yang-Mills systems provide on-shell supermultiplets of arbitrarily extended super-Poincaré algebras; classical consistency not setting any limit on the extension N. We explicitly display equations of motion up to the $N=6$ extension. The stress tensor, which vanishes for the $N\le 3$ self-duality equations, not only gets resurrected when $N=4$,…
We examine the BRS cohomology of chiral matter in $N=1$, $D=4$ supersymmetry to determine a general form of composite superfield operators which can suffer from supersymmetry anomalies. Composite superfield operators $\Y_{(a,b)}$ are products of the elementary chiral superfields $S$ and $\ov S$ and the derivative operators $D_\a$, $\ov D_{\dot \b}$ and $\pa_{\a \dot \b}$. Such superfields $\Y_{(a,b)}$ can be chosen to have `$a$' symmetrized undotted indices $\a_i$ and `$b$' symmetrized dotted indices $\dot \b_j$. The result derived here is that each composite superfield $\Y_{(a,b)}$ is subject…
Starting with two supersymmetric dual theories, we imagine adding a chiral perturbation that breaks supersymmetry dynamically. At low energy we then get two theories with soft supersymmetry-breaking terms that are generated dynamically. With a canonical Kahler potential, some of the scalars of the "magnetic" theory typically have negative mass-squared, and the vector-like symmetry is broken. Since for large supersymmetry breaking the "electric" theory becomes ordinary QCD, the two theories are then incompatible. For small supersymmetry breaking, if duality still holds, the magnetic theory anal…
We investigate the Dijkgraaf-Vafa proposal when supersymmetry is broken. We consider U(N) SYM with chiral adjoint matter where the coupling constants in the tree-level superpotential are promoted to chiral spurions. The holomorphic part of the low-energy glueball superpotential can still be analyzed. We compute the holomorphic supersymmetry breaking contributions using methods of the geometry underlying the N=1 effective gauge theory viewed as a Whitham system. We also study the change in the effective glueball superpotential using perturbative supergraph techniques in the presence of spurions…

Non-linear sigma models with extended supersymmetry have constrained target space geometries, and can serve as effective tools for investigating and constructing new geometries. Analyzing the geometrical and topological properties of sigma models is necessary to understand the underlying structures of string theory. The most general two-dimensional sigma model with manifest N=(2,2) supersymmetry can be parametrized by chiral, twisted chiral and semichiral superfields. In the research presented in this thesis, N=(4,4) (twisted) supersymmetry is constructed for a semichiral sigma model. It is fo…
We investigate the low-energy dynamics of $SU(N)$ gauge theories with one antisymmetric tensor field, $N - 4 + N_f$ antifundamentals and $N_f$ fundamentals, for $N_f \le 3$. For $N_f = 3$ we construct the quantum moduli space, and for $N_f < 3$ we find the exact quantum superpotentials. We find two large classes of models with dynamical supersymmetry breaking. The odd $N$ theories break supersymmetry once appropriate mass terms are added in the superpotential. The even $N$ theories break supersymmetry after gauging an extra chiral $U(1)$ symmetry.
We present the higgsing of three-dimensional N=6 superconformal ABJM type theories coupled to conformal supergravity, so called topologically gauged ABJM theory, thus providing a gravitational extension of previous work on the relation between N M2 and N D2-branes. The resulting N=6 supergravity theory appears at a chiral point similar to that of three-dimensional chiral gravity introduced recently by Li, Song and Strominger, but with the opposite sign for the Ricci scalar term in the lagrangian. We identify the supersymmetry in the broken phase as a particular linear combination of the supers…
We calculate the three loop anomalous dimension for a general $N=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory. The result is used to probe the possible existence of renormalisation invariant relationships between the Yukawa and gauge couplings.
Conserved and commuting charges are investigated in both bosonic and supersymmetric classical chiral models, with and without Wess-Zumino terms. In the bosonic theories, there are conserved currents based on symmetric invariant tensors of the underlying algebra, and the construction of infinitely many commuting charges, with spins equal to the exponents of the algebra modulo its Coxeter number, can be carried out irrespective of the coefficient of the Wess-Zumino term. In the supersymmetric models, a different pattern of conserved quantities emerges, based on antisymmetric invariant tensors. T…
Simultaneous nonlinear realizations of spontaneously broken supersymmetry in conjunction with other spontaneous and/or explicitly broken symmetries including R symmetry, global chiral symmetry, dilatations and the superconformal symmetries is reviewed.
We discuss generalizations of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih (ISS) vacua to chiral models. We study one example, of an s-confining theory, in detail. In the IR, this example reduces to two ISS-like sectors, and exhibits a supersymmetry-breaking vacuum with all pseudo-moduli stabilized at the origin, and with the R-symmetry unbroken. The IR theory is interesting from the point of view of R-symmetry breaking. This theory is an O'Raifeartaigh model with all charges zero or two, but the presence of a second R-charged pseudo-modulus with superpotential couplings to the messengers in principle allows for…
We propose the relativistic point particle models invariant under the bosonic counterpart of SUSY. The particles move along the world lines in four dimensional Minkowski space extended by $N$ commuting Weyl spinors. The models provide after first quantization the non--Grassmann counterpart of chiral superfields, satisfying Klein--Gordon equation. Free higher spin fields obtained by expansions of such chiral superfields satisfy the N=2 Bargman--Wigner equations in massive case and Fierz--Pauli equations in massless case.
We study the general deformation of $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetry transformations of a vector multiplet that forms a (constant) triplet under the $SU(2)$ R-symmetry corresponding to the magnetic dual of the triplet of the Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) parameters. We show that in the presence of both triplets, the induced scalar potential of a vector multiplet with generic prepotential has always a minimum that realises partial breaking of $\mathcal N=2\to \mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry. We then consider the impact of the deformation in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action where one supersymmetry is non-line…
The N=1 superspace generalization of the 3-brane action in 6 dimensions with partially broken N=2 supersymmetry can be constructed using N=1 chiral, complex linear, or real linear superfields. The physical scalars of these multiplets give equivalent descriptions of the two transverse coordinates. The second supersymmetry is realized nonlinearly in all these actions. We derive the superspace brane actions and their nonlinear supersymmetry for both kinds of linear superfields when we break N=2 supersymmetry spontaneously. This breaking is realized in the free action of hypermultiplets that live …
The D1-D5 system is believed to have an `orbifold point' in its moduli space where its low energy theory is a N=4 supersymmetric sigma model with target space M^N/S^N, where M is T^4 or K3. We study correlation functions of chiral operators in CFTs arising from such a theory. We construct a basic class of chiral operators from twist fields of the symmetric group and the generators of the superconformal algebra. We find explicitly the 3-point functions for these chiral fields at large N; these expressions are `universal' in that they are independent of the choice of M. We observe that the resul…
We investigate three classes of supersymmetric models which can be obtained by breaking the chiral SU(2k+3) gauge theories with one antisymmetric tensor and 2k-1 antifundamentals. For N=3, the chiral SU(2k)$\times$SU(3)$\times$U(1) theories break supersym metry by the quantum deformations of the moduli spaces in the strong SU(2k) gauge coupling limit. For N=2, it is the generalization of the SU(5)$\times$U(2)$\times$U(1) model mentioned in the literature. Supersymmetry is broken by carefully choosing the q uark-antiquark-doublet Yukawa couplings in this model. For N=1, this becomes the well-kn…
The progress brought to the study of chiral fermions and gauge theories by quantization methods with a bulk time suggests their usefulness in supersymmetric theories. Using superspace methods, we show how an explicitly supersymmetric version of such quantization methods may be given.
We discuss a supersymmetry breaking mechanism for N = 1 theories triggered by higher dimensional op- erators. We consider such operators for real linear and chiral spinor superfields that break superymmetry and reduce to the Volkov-Akulov action. We also consider supersymmetry breaking induced by a higher dimensional operator of a nonminimal scalar (complex linear) multiplet. The latter differs from the stan- dard chiral multiplet in its auxiliary sector, which contains, in addition to the complex scalar auxiliary of a chiral superfield, a complex vector and two spinors auxiliaries. By adding …
We study a recently-found class of RG flows in four dimensions exhibiting enhancement of supersymmetry in the infrared, which provides a lagrangian description of several strongly-coupled N=2 SCFTs. The procedure involves starting from a N=2 SCFT, coupling a chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation of the global symmetry to the moment map of the SCFT and turning on a nilpotent expectation value for this chiral. In this note we show that, combining considerations based on 't Hooft anomaly matching and basic results about the N=2 superconformal algebra, it is possible to understand in deta…
We propose a new chiral model of metastable supersymmetry breaking in the conformal window via chiral/nonchiral Seiberg duality, which is focused on Spin(7)/SU(N_f-4) duality in this letter. Following the approach of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih model, a small mass perturbation in the nonchiral theory leads to supersymmetry breaking by rank condition in the chiral dual description.
Recently a very interesting three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory with $SU(3)$ global symmetry was discussed by several authors. We denote this model by $T_x$. This was conjectured to have two dual descriptions, one with explicit supersymmetry and emergent flavor symmetry and the other with explicit flavor symmetry and emergent supersymmetry. We discuss a third description of the model which has both flavor symmetry and supersymmetry manifest. We then investigate models which can be constructed by using $T_x$ as a building block gauging the global symmetry and paying special …
The partial spontaneous breaking of rigid N=2 supersymmetry implies the existence of a massless N=1 Goldstone multiplet. In this paper we show that the spin-(1/2,1) Maxwell multiplet can play this role. We construct its full nonlinear transformation law and find the invariant Goldstone action. The spin-1 piece of the action turns out to be of Born-Infeld type, and the full superfield action is duality invariant. This leads us to conclude that the Goldstone multiplet can be associated with a D-brane solution of superstring theory for p=3. In addition, we find that N=1 chirality is preserved in …
Actions for $D=2$, $N=2$ supergravity coupled to a scalar field are calculated, and it is shown that the most general power-counting renormalizable dilaton gravity action has an $N=2$ locally supersymmetric extension. The presence of chiral terms in the action leads one to hope that non-renormalization theorems similar to those in global SUSY will apply; this would eliminate some of the renormalization ambiguities which plague ordinary bosonic (and $N=1$) dilaton gravity. To investigate this, the model is studied in superconformal gauge, where it is found that one chiral term becomes nonchiral…
The gauging of axionic, Stueckelberg-type, shift symmetries with generalized Chern-Simons terms and the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation has recently been studied in the context of certain string compactifications and with regard to the phenomenology of unusual variants of Z'-bosons. In this talk, following recent work with De Rydt, Rosseel, Schmidt and Van Proeyen, I summarize how such theories can be reconciled with global and local N=1 supersymmetry. Two simple consistency conditions are shown to encode strong constraints on the allowed anomalies for different types of gauge …
We present a regularization scheme which respects the supersymmetry and the maximal background gauge covariance in supersymmetric chiral gauge theories. When the anomaly cancellation condition is satisfied, the effective action in the superfield background field method automatically restores the gauge invariance without counterterms. The scheme also provides a background gauge covariant definition of composite operators that is especially useful in analyzing anomalies. We present several applications: The minimal consistent gauge anomaly; the super-chiral anomaly and the superconformal anomaly…
