The recently reported magnetic ordering in insulating two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as chromium triiodide (CrI$_3$) and chromium tribromide (CrBr$_3$), opens new possibilities for the fabrication of magneto-electronic devices based on 2D systems. Inevitably, the magnetization and spin dynamics in 2D magnets are strongly linked to Joule heating. Therefore, understanding the coupling between spin, charge and heat, i.e. spin caloritronic effects, is crucial. However, spin caloritronics in 2D ferromagnets remains mostly unexplored, due to their instability in air. Here we develop a fabrication method that integrates spin-active contacts with 2D magnets through hBN encapsulation, allowing us to explore the spin caloritronic effects in these materials. The angular dependence of the thermal spin signal of the CrBr$_3$/Pt system is studied, for different conditions of magnetic field and heating current. We highlight the presence of a significant magnetic proximity effect from CrBr$_3$ on Pt revealed by an anomalous Nernst effect in Pt, and suggest the contribution of the spin Seebeck effect from CrBr$_3$. These results pave the way for future magnonic devices using air-sensitive 2D magnetic insulators.

The efficient spin injection is the prerequisite for these devices. The recent discovery of magnetic 2D materials leads to the possibility of fully 2D van der Waals spintronics devices by implementing spin injection through magnetic proximity effect (MPE). Here, we report the investigation of magnetic proximity effect in 2D CrBr3/graphene van der Waals heterostructures, which is probed by Zeeman spin Hall effect thro…
Semiconducting ferromagnet-nonmagnet interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures present a unique opportunity to investigate magnetic proximity interactions dependent upon a multitude of phenomena including valley and layer pseudospins, moiré periodicity, or exceptionally strong Coulomb binding. Here, we report a charge-state dependency of the magnetic proximity effects between MoSe$_2$ and CrBr$_3$ in photoluminescence, whereby the valley polarization of the MoSe$_2$ trion state conforms closely to the local CrBr$_3$ magnetization, while the neutral exciton state remains insensitive to the f…
We report on first-principle calculations on magnetic proximity effect in a van der Waals heterostructure formed by a graphene monolayer induced by its interaction with a two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet (chromium tribromide, CrBr3). We observe that the magnetic proximity effect arising from the spin-dependent interlayer coupling depends sensitively on the interlayer electronic configuration. The proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene orbital by up to 63.6 %, together with a miniband splitting band gap of about 73.4 meV and 8% enhancement in magnetic moment (3.47$μ$B/cell) i…
The growing family of two-dimensional (2D) materials that are now available can be used to assemble van der Waals heterostructures with a wide range of properties. Of particular interest are tunnelling heterostructures, which have been used to study the electronic states both in the tunnelling barrier and in the emitter and collector contacts. Recently, 2D ferromagnets have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Here we investigate electron tunnelling through a thin (2-6 layers) ferromagnetic CrBr3 barrier. For devices with non-magnetic barriers, conservation of momentum can be relaxed…
We report experimental investigations of transport through bilayer graphene (BLG)/chromium trihalide (CrX$_3$; X=Cl, Br, I) van der Waals interfaces. In all cases, a large charge transfer from BLG to CrX$_3$ takes place (reaching densities in excess of $10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$), and generates an electric field perpendicular to the interface that opens a band gap in BLG. We determine the gap from the activation energy of the conductivity and find excellent agreement with the latest theory accounting for the contribution of the $σ$ bands to the BLG dielectric susceptibility. We further show that for …
Van der Waals heterostructures combining two-dimensional magnetic and semiconducting layers constitute a promising platform for interfacing magnetism, electronics, and optics. Here, we use resonant optical reflection spectroscopy to the observe magnetic proximity effect in a gate-tunable MoSe$_2$/CrBr$_3$ heterostructure. High quality of the interface leads to a giant zero-field splitting of the K and K' valley excitons in MoSe$_2$, equivalent to an external magnetic field of 12 T, with a weak but distinct electric field dependence that hints at potential for electrical control of magnetizatio…
Controlling the crystal structure is a powerful approach for manipulating the fundamental properties of solids. Unique to two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials, the control can be achieved by modifying the stacking order through rotation and translation between the layers. Here, we report the first observation of stacking dependent interlayer magnetism in the 2D magnetic semiconductor, chromium tribromide (CrBr3), enabled by the successful growth of its monolayer and bilayer through molecular beam epitaxy. Using in situ spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we d…
The van der Waals class of materials offer an approach to two-dimensional magnetism as their spin fluctuations can be tuned upon exfoliation of layers. Moreover, it has recently been shown that spin-lattice coupling and long-range magnetic ordering can be modified with pressure in van der Waals materials. In this work, the magnetic properties of quasi two-dimensional CrBr3 are reported applying hydrostatic pressure. The application of pressure (0 - 0.8 GPa) shows a 72 % decrease in saturation magnetization with small decrease in the Curie temperature from 33 to 29 K. Density functional theory …

The discovery of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors has triggered enormous research interest recently. In this work, we use first-principles many-body perturbation theory to study a prototypical 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor, monolayer chromium tribromide (CrBr$_3$). With broken time-reversal symmetry, spin-orbit coupling, and excitonic effects included through the full-spinor $GW$ and $GW$ plus Bethe-Salpeter equation ($GW$-BSE) methods, we compute the frequency-dependent layer polarizability tensor and dielectric function tensor that govern the optical and magneto-…
Precision magnetometry is fundamental to the development of novel magnetic materials and devices. Recently, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond has emerged as a promising probe for static magnetism in 2D van der Waals materials, capable of quantitative imaging with nanoscale spatial resolution. However, the dynamic character of magnetism, crucial for understanding the magnetic phase transition and achieving technological applications, has rarely been experimentally accessible in single 2D crystals. Here, we coherently control the NV center's spin precession to achieve ultra-sensitive, …
Twisted van der Waals materials have become a paradigmatic platform to realize exotic correlated states of matter. Here, we show that a twisted dichalcogenide bilayer (WSe$_2$) encapsulated between a magnetic van der Waals material (CrBr$_3$) features flat bands with tunable valley and spin flavors. We demonstrate that, when electron-electron interactions are included, spin-ferromagnetic and valley-ferromagnetic states emerge in the flat bands, stemming from the interplay between correlations, intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and exchange proximity effects. We show that the specific symmetry brok…
The study of atomically thin ferromagnetic crystals has led to the discovery of unusual magnetic behaviour and provided insight into the magnetic properties of bulk materials. However, the experimental techniques that have been used to explore ferromagnetism in such materials cannot probe the magnetic field directly. Here, we show that ballistic Hall micromagnetometry can be used to measure the magnetization of individual two-dimensional ferromagnets. Our devices are made by van der Waals assembly in such a way that the investigated ferromagnetic crystal is placed on top of a multi-terminal Ha…
Quantum spin-liquid van der Waals magnets such as TaS$_2$, TaSe$_2$, and RuCl$_3$ provide a natural platform to explore new exotic phenomena associated with spinon physics, whose properties can be controlled by exchange proximity with ferromagnetic insulators such as CrBr$_3$. Here we put forward a twisted van der Waals heterostructure based on a quantum spin-liquid bilayer encapsulated between ferromagnetic insulators. We demonstrate the emergence of spinon flat bands and topological spinon states in such heterostructure, where the emergence of a topological gap is driven by the twist. We fur…
We have synthesized unique colloidal nanoplatelets of the ferromagnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals material CrI3 and have characterized these nanoplatelets structurally, magnetically, and by magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. The isolated CrI3 nanoplatelets have lateral dimensions of ~25 nm and ensemble thicknesses of only ~4 nm, corresponding to just a few CrI3 monolayers. Magnetic and magneto-optical measurements demonstrate robust 2D ferromagnetic ordering in these nanoplatelets with Curie temperatures similar to those observed in bulk CrI3, despite the strong spatial confine…
Anomalous Nernst effect, a result of charge current driven by temperature gradient, provides a probe of the topological nature of materials due to its sensitivity to the Berry curvature near the Fermi level. Fe3GeTe2, one important member of the recently discovered two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, offers a unique platform for anomalous Nernst effect because of its metallic and topological nature. Here, we report the observation of large anomalous Nernst effect in Fe3GeTe2. The anomalous Hall angle and anomalous Nernst angle are about 0.07 and 0.09 respectively, far larger than…
Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by two-dimensional magnets and semiconductors have provided a fertile ground for fundamental science and for spintronics. We present first-principles calculations finding a proximity exchange splitting of 14 meV equivalent to an effective Zeeman field of 120 T in the vdW magnet-semiconductor heterostructure MoS$_2$/CrBr$_3$, leading to a 2D spin-polarized half-metal with carrier densities ranging up to $10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. We consequently explore the effect of large exchange coupling on the electronic bandstructure when the magnetic layer hosts chira…
The designer approach has become a new paradigm in accessing novel quantum phases of matter. Moreover, the realization of exotic states such as topological insulators, superconductors and quantum spin liquids often poses challenging or even contradictory demands for any single material. For example, it is presently unclear if topological superconductivity, which has been suggested as a key ingredient for topological quantum computing, exists at all in any naturally occurring material . This problem can be circumvented by using designer heterostructures combining different materials, where the …
The magneto-optic Kerr effect is a powerful tool for measuring magnetism in thin films at microscopic scales, as was recently demonstrated by the major role it played in the discovery of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism in monolayer CrI$_3$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. These 2D magnets are often stacked with other 2D materials in van der Waals heterostructures on a SiO$_2$/Si substrate, giving rise to thin-film interference. This can strongly affect magneto-optical measurements, but is often not taken into account in experiments. Here, we show that thin-film interference can be used to engineer …
The extreme versatility of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials derives from their ability to exhibit new electronic properties when assembled in proximity with dissimilar crystals. For example, although graphene is inherently non-magnetic, recent work has reported a magnetic proximity effect in graphene interfaced with magnetic substrates, potentially enabling a pathway towards achieving a high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we investigate heterostructures of graphene and chromium trihalide magnetic insulators (CrI$_3$, CrBr$_3$, and CrCl$_3$). Surprisingly, we are …
Superconductivity and magnetism are generally incompatible because of the opposing requirement on electron spin alignment. When combined, they produce a multitude of fascinating phenomena, including unconventional superconductivity and topological superconductivity. The emergence of two-dimensional (2D)layered superconducting and magnetic materials that can form nanoscale junctions with atomically sharp interfaces presents an ideal laboratory to explore new phenomena from coexisting superconductivity and magnetic ordering. Here we report tunneling spectroscopy under an in-plane magnetic field …
The discovery of ferromagnetic order in monolayer 2D crystals has opened a new venue in the field of two dimensional (2D) materials. 2D magnets are not only interesting on their own, but their integration in van der Waals heterostructures allows for the observation of new and exotic effects in the ultrathin limit. The family of Chromium trihalides, CrI$_3$, CrBr$_3$ and CrCl$_3$, is, so far, the most studied among magnetic 2D crystals. In this mini-review, we provide a perspective of the state of the art of the theoretical understanding of magnetic 2D trihalides, most of which will also be rel…
