Geodesic Webs on a Two-Dimensional Manifold and Euler Equations

We prove that any planar 4-web defines a unique projective structure in the plane in such a way that the leaves of the foliations are geodesics of this projective structure. We also find conditions for the projective structure mentioned above to contain an affine symmetric connection, and conditions for a planar 4-web to be equivalent to a geodesic 4-web on an affine symmetric surface. Similar results are obtained for planar d-webs, d > 4, provided that additional d-4 second-order invariants vanish.

Co--calibrated $G_2$ structure from cuspidal cubics

We establish a twistor correspondence between a cuspidal cubic curve in a complex projective plane, and a co-calibrated homogeneous $G_2$ structure on the seven--dimensional parameter space of such cubics. Imposing the Riemannian reality conditions leads to an explicit co-calibrated $G_2$ structure on $SU(2, 1)/U(1)$. This is an example of an SO(3) structure in seven dimensions. Each of the four critical Severi varieties arises from a minimal holomorphic nilpotent orbit in a simple regular rank 3 hermitian Lie algebra and each such variety lies as singular locus in a cubic--the chordal variety--in the corresponding complex projective space; the cubic and projective space are identified in terms of holomorphic nilpotent orbits. Average volume, curvatures, and Euler characteristic of random real algebraic varieties

We determine the expected curvature polynomial of random real projective varieties given as the zero set of independent random polynomials with Gaussian distribution, whose distribution is invariant under the action of the orthogonal group. In particular, the expected Euler characteristic of such random real projective varieties is found. This considerably extends previously known results on the number of roots, the volume, and the Euler characteristic of the solution set of random polynomial equations

A class of cubic hypersurfaces and quaternionic Kähler manifolds of co-homogeneity one

We classify all complete projective special real manifolds with reducible cubic potential, obtaining four series. For two of the series the manifolds are homogeneous, for the two others the respective automorphism group acts with co-homogeneity one. Complete projective special real manifolds give rise to complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds via the supergravity q-map, which is the composition of the supergravity c-map and r-map. Quadratic Points of Surfaces in Projective 3-Space

Quadratic points of a surface in the projective 3-space are the points which can be exceptionally well approximated by a quadric. They are also singularities of a 3-web in the elliptic part and of a line field in the hyperbolic part of the surface. We show that generically the index of the 3-web at a quadratic point is 1/3 or -1/3, while the index of the line field is 1 or -1. Moreover, for an elliptic quadratic point whose cubic form is semi-homogeneous, we can use Loewner's conjecture to show that the index is at most 1.
