We propose a mechanism to directly measure the chiral anomaly in disorder Weyl semimetals (WSMs) by the Kondo effect. We find that in a magnetic and electric field driven WSM, the locations of the Kondo peaks can be modulated by the chiral chemical potential, which is proportional to $\mathbf{E}\cdot \mathbf{B}$. The Kondo peaks come from spin fluctuations within the impurities, which apart from the temperature, relate closely to the host's Fermi level. In WSMs, the chiral-anomaly-induced chirality population imbalance will shift the local Fermi levels of the paired Weyl valleys toward opposite directions in energy, and then affects the Kondo effect. Consequently, the Kondo effect can be tunable by an external electric field via the chiral chemical potential. This is unique to the chiral anomaly. Base on this, we argue that the electrically tunable Kondo effect can serve as a direct measurement of the chiral anomaly in WSMs. The Kondo peaks are robust against the disorder effect and therefore, the signal of the chiral anomaly survives for a relatively weak magnetic field.
In this Book Chapter (invited) we briefly review the basic concepts defining topological insulators and focus on elaborating on the key experimental results that revealed and established their symmetry protected (SPT) topological nature. We then present key experimental results that demonstrate magnetism, Kondo insulation, mirror chirality or topological crystalline order and superconductivity in spin-orbit topological insulator settings and how these new (bulk insulating) phases of matter arise through topological quantum phase transitions from Bloch band insulators via topological or Dirac s…
We theoretically study electrical responses of magnetization in Weyl semimetals. The Weyl semimetal is a new class of topological semimetals, possessing hedgehog type spin textures in momentum space. Because of this peculiar spin texture, an interplay of electron transport and spin dynamics might provide new method to electrical control of magnetization. In this paper, we consider the magnetically doped Weyl semimetals, and systematically study current- and charge-induced spin torque exerted on the local magnetization in three-dimensional Dirac-Weyl metals. We determine all current-induced spi…
We study the Kondo effect in three-dimensional (3D) Dirac materials and Weyl semimetals. We find the scaling of the Kondo temperature with respect to the doping $n$ and the coupling $J$ between the moment of the magnetic impurity and the carriers of the semimetal. We find that when the temperature is much smaller than the Kondo temperature the resistivity due to the Kondo effect scales as the $n^{-4/3}$.We also study the effect of the interplay of long-range scalar disorder and Kondo effect. In the presence of disorder-induced long-range carrier density inhomogeneities the Kondo effect is not …
Proximity of two different materials leads to an intricate coupling of quasiparticles so that an unprecedented electronic state is often realized at the interface. Here, we demonstrate a resonance-type many-body ground state in graphene, a non-magnetic two-dimensional Dirac semimetal, when grown on SmB6, a Kondo insulator, via thermal decomposition of fullerene molecules. This ground state is typically observed in three-dimensional magnetic materials with correlated electrons. Above the characteristic Kondo temperature of the substrate, the electron band structure of pristine graphene remains …
We study a quantum dot coupled to two edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator through electron tunnelings in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbital interaction induced by an external electric field. We show that if the electron interactions on the edge states are repulsive, there are two possible phases, depending on the Luttinger liquid parameter $K$. For $1/2<K<1$, the low-temperature physics is controlled by a previously identified two-channel Kondo fixed point. For the edge states with even stronger repulsive interactions, i.e. $1/4<K<1/2$, the system reaches another phase at low tempe…
Topology and strong electron correlations are crucial ingredients in emerging quantum materials, yet their intersection in experimental systems has been relatively limited to date. Strongly correlated Weyl semimetals, particularly when magnetism is incorporated, offer a unique and fertile platform to explore emergent phenomena in novel topological matter and topological spintronics. The antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn3Sn exhibits many exotic physical properties such as a large spontaneous Hall effect and has recently attracted intense interest. In this work, we report synthesis of epitaxia…

We investigate the effect of a vertical electric field on a Dirac semimetal thin film. We show that through the interplay between the quantum confinement effect and the field-induced coupling between sub-bands, the sub-band gap can be tuned and inverted, during which the system undergoes a topological phase transition between a trivial band insulator and a quantum spin Hall insulator. Consequently, one can electrically switch the topological edge channels on and off, making the system a promising platform for constructing a topological field effect transistor.
Strong electron correlations and interference effects are discussed in parallel-coupled single-level and orbitally doubly degenerate quantum dots. The finite-U mean-field slave boson approach is used to study many-body effects. The analysis is carried out in a wide range of parameter space including both atomic-like and molecular-like Kondo regimes and taking into account various perturbations, like interdot tunneling, interdot interaction, mixing of the electrode channels and exchange interaction. We also discuss the influence of singularities of electronic structure and the impact of polariz…
Graphene nanoribbons are widely regarded as promising building blocks for next-generation carbon-based devices. A critical issue to their prospective applications is whether and to what degree their electronic structure can be externally controlled. Here, we combine simple model Hamiltonians with extensive first-principles calculations to investigate the response of armchair graphene nanoribbons to transverse electric fields. Such fields can be achieved either upon laterally gating the nanoribbon or incorporating ambipolar chemical co-dopants along the edges. We reveal that the field induces a…
The connection of electrical leads to wire-like molecules is a logical step in the development of molecular electronics, but also allows studies of fundamental physics. For example, metallic carbon nanotubes are quantum wires that have been found to act as one-dimensional quantum dots, Luttinger-liquids, proximity-induced superconductors and ballistic and diffusive one-dimensional metals. Here we report that electrically-contacted single-wall nanotubes can serve as powerful probes of Kondo physics, demonstrating the universality of the Kondo effect. Arising in the prototypical case from the in…
We study dynamical mass generation and the resultant helical spin orders in topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals, including the edge states of quantum spin Hall insulators, the surface states of weak topological insulators, and the bulk materials of Weyl semimetals. In particular, the helical spin textures of Weyl semimetals manifest the spin-momentum locking of Weyl fermions in a visible manner. The spin-wave fluctuations of the helical order carry electric charge density; therefore, the spin textures can be electrically controlled in a simple and predictable manner.
Recent years have brought an explosion of activities in the research of topological aspects of condensed-matter systems. Topologically non-trivial phases of matter are typically accompanied by protected surface states or exotic degenerate excitations such as Majorana end states or Haldane's localized spinons. Topologically protected degeneracies can, however, also appear in the bulk. An intriguing example is provided by Weyl semimetals, where topologically protected electronic band degeneracies and exotic surface states emerge even in the absence of interactions. Here we demonstrate experiment…

A Coulomb impurity placed in an undoped Weyl semimetal spontaneously surrounds itself with a cloud of condensed Weyl fermions. We study this system within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We find that the ground-state of the system is electrically neutral and exhibits an experimentally accessible Landau zero-charge effect: the impurity charge is screened out at any finite distance in the limit of vanishing impurity size. Specifically, we show how in this limit the Thomas-Fermi equation for the electrostatic potential transforms into the Gell-Mann-Low equation for the charge.
We investigate the Kondo effect with Wilson fermions. This is based on a mean-field approach for the chiral Gross-Neveu model including four-point interactions between a light Wilson fermion and a heavy fermion. For massless Wilson fermions, we demonstrate the appearance of the Kondo effect. We point out that there is a coexistence phase with both the light-fermion scalar condensate and Kondo condensate, and the critical chemical potentials of the scalar condensate are shifted by the Kondo effect. For negative-mass Wilson fermions, we find that the Kondo effect is favored near the parameter re…
We report calculations of the electronic structure of silicene and the stability of its weakly buckled honeycomb lattice in an external electric field oriented perpendicular to the monolayer of Si atoms. We find that the electric field produces a tunable band gap in the Dirac-type electronic spectrum, the gap being suppressed by a factor of about eight by the high polarizability of the system. At low electric fields, the interplay between this tunable band gap, which is specific to electrons on a honeycomb lattice, and the Kane-Mele spin-orbit coupling induces a transition from a topological t…
We propose a way to observe the chiral magnetic effect in non-centrosymmetric Weyl semimetals under the action of strong electric field, via the non-linear part of their I-V characteristic that is odd in the external magnetic field, or odd-in-magnetic field voltages in electrically open circuits. This effect relies on valley-selective heating in such materials, which in general leads to nonequilibrium valley population imbalances. In the presence of an external magnetic field, such a valley-imbalanced Weyl semimetal will in general develop an electric current along the direction of the magneti…
We theoretically investigate the nature of laser-irradiated Kondo insulators. Using Floquet theory and slave boson approach, we study a periodic Anderson model and derive an effective model which describes the laser-irradiated Kondo insulators. In this model, we find two generic effects induced by laser light. One is the dynamical localization, which suppresses hopping and hybridization. The other is the laser-induced hopping and hybridization, which can be interpreted as a synthetic spin-orbit coupling or magnetic field. The first effect drastically changes the behavior of the Kondo effect. E…

We have investigated the Kondo physics of a single magnetic impurity embedded in multi-Dirac (Weyl) node fermionic systems. By using a generic effective model for the host material and employing a numerical renormalization group approach we access the low temperature behavior of the system, identifying the existence of Kondo screening in single-, double-, and triple-Dirac (Weyl) node models. We find that in any multi-Dirac node systems the low-energy regime lies within one of the known classes of pseudogap Kondo problem, extensively studied in the literature. Kondo screening is also observed f…
Efficient and versatile spin-to-charge current conversion is crucial for the development of spintronic applications, which strongly rely on the ability to electrically generate and detect spin currents. In this context, the spin Hall effect has been widely studied in heavy metals with strong spin-orbit coupling. While the high crystal symmetry in these materials limits the conversion to the orthogonal configuration, unusual configurations are expected in low symmetry transition metal dichalcogenide semimetals, which could add flexibility to the electrical injection and detection of pure spin c…
We study theoretically the electronic structure of topological nodal-line semimetals. We show that, in the presence of a gap-opening spatially dependent mass term that forms a domain wall, an in-gap charged localized mode emerges at the domain wall. It turns out that such a domain wall is realized by head-to-head (or tail-to-tail) bulk electric polarizations. The localized mode has a topological origin, i.e., a topological confinement is realized, which is understood by a semiclassical topological number defined in the semiclassical momentum-real space. In contrast to previous studies, our stu…
Electrically manipulating domain wall (DW) is at central in the field of spintronics. Magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) offers an additional knob for electric manipulation of DW by utilizing the topological DW bound states. Using magnetic WSM material EuB6 as a prototype system, we investigate its DW bound states combining first principles calculations and domain imaging via magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The MFM measurements reveal that domains with magnetization aligned along three [100] directions dominate over others under a small magnetic field along [001] direction. Accordingly, first prin…
We propose a minimal tight-binding model for thin films made of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) on the basis of the mirror and discrete rotational symmetries. The basic term consists of the spin-orbit interaction describing a Weyl semimetal, where gapless Dirac cones emerge at all the high symmetry points in the momentum space. We then introduce the mass term providing gaps to Dirac cones at our disposal. They simulate the thin films made of the [001], [111] and [110] TCI surfaces. TCI thin films are topological insulators protected by the mirror symmetry. We analyze the mirror-Chern n…
We investigate two different types of relativistic Kondo effects, distinguished by heavy-impurity degrees of freedom, by focusing on the energy-momentum dispersion relations of the ground state with condensates composed of a light Dirac fermion and a nonrelativistic impurity fermion. Heavy fermion degrees of freedom are introduced in terms of two types of heavy-fermion effective theories, in other words, two heavy-fermion limits for the heavy Dirac fermion, which are known as the heavy-quark effective theories (HQETs) in high-energy physics. While the first one includes only the heavy-particle…

We theoretically demonstrate that class-I topological Dirac semimetals (TDSMs) can provide a platform for realizing both electrically and magnetically tunable spin-charge conversion. With time-reversal symmetry, the spin component along the uniaxial rotation axis ($z$-axis) is approximately conserved, which leads to an anisotropic spin Hall effect -- the resulting spin Hall current relies on the relative orientation between the external electric field and the $z$-axis. The application of a magnetic field, on the other hand, breaks time-reversal symmetry, driving the TDSM into a Weyl semimetal …
Dirac semimetals are expected to forbid the manifestation of the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) because of their crystal inversion symmetry. Here, we report the observation of the CPGE in Cd3As2 nanobelt field effect transistors, when the photoexcitation is focused in the vicinity of the metal contacts up to room temperature. We attribute the CPGE to the Schottky electric field induced symmetry breaking, which results in the photocurrent modulation by circularly polarized photoexcitation via spin-momentum locking. The hypothesis is supported by a suite of experiments including spatially …
Nanoplasmonics exploits the coupling between light and collective electron density oscillations (plasmons) to bypass the stringent limits imposed by diffraction. This coupling enables confinement of light to sub-wavelength volumes and is usually exploited in nanostructured metals. Substantial efforts are being made at the current frontier of the field to employ electron systems in semiconducting and semimetallic materials since these add the exciting possibility of realizing electrically tunable and/or active nanoplasmonic devices. Here we demonstrate that a suitable design of the doping profi…
