We propose a way to observe the chiral magnetic effect in non-centrosymmetric Weyl semimetals under the action of strong electric field, via the non-linear part of their I-V characteristic that is odd in the external magnetic field, or odd-in-magnetic field voltages in electrically open circuits. This effect relies on valley-selective heating in such materials, which in general leads to nonequilibrium valley population imbalances. In the presence of an external magnetic field, such a valley-imbalanced Weyl semimetal will in general develop an electric current along the direction of the magnetic field -- the chiral magnetic effect. We also discuss a specific experimental setup to observe the chiral magnetic effect of hot electrons.
Behaviour of hot electrons under the influence of dc field in carbon nanotubes is theoretically considered. The study was done semi-classically by solving Boltzmann transport equation with the presence of the hot electrons source to derive the current densities. Plots of the normalized axial current density versus electric field strength of the chiral CNTs reveal a negative differential conductivity (NDC). Unlike achiral CNTs, the NDC occurs at a low field about $\mathrm{6\ kV/cm}$ for chiral CNT. We further observed that the switch from NDC to PDC occurs at lower dc field in chiral CNTs than …
Plasmonic nanocrystals with hot spots are able to localize optical energy in small spaces. In such physical systems, near-field interactions between molecules and plasmons can become especially strong. This paper considers the case of a nanoparticle dimer and a chiral biomolecule. In our model, a chiral molecule is placed in the gap between two plasmonic nanoparticles, where the electromagnetic hot spot occurs. Since many important biomolecules have optical transitions in the UV, we consider the case of Aluminum nanoparticles, as they offer strong electromagnetic enhancements in the blue and U…

A simple hot electron thermocouple is realized in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) and used to measure the diffusion thermopower of the 2DES at zero magnetic field. This hot electron technique, which requires no micron-scale patterning of the 2DES, is much less sensitive than conventional methods to phonon-drag effects. Our thermopower results are in good agreement with the Mott formula for diffusion thermopower for temperatures up to T ~ 2 K.
Hot electron transport in a quantum Hall edge channel of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure is studied by investigating the energy distribution function in the channel. Ballistic hot-electron transport, its optical-phonon replicas, weak electron-electron scattering, and electron-hole excitation in the Fermi sea are clearly identified in the energy spectra. The optical-phonon scattering is analyzed to evaluate the edge potential profile. We find that the electron-electron scattering is significantly suppressed with increasing the hot-electron's energy well above the Fermi energy. This can be unders…
Generation of energetic (hot) electrons is an intrinsic property of any plasmonic nanostructure under illumination. Simultaneously, a striking advantage of metal nanocrystals over semiconductors lies in their very large absorption cross sections. Therefore, metal nanostructures with strong and tailored plasmonic resonances are very attractive for photocatalytic applications. However, the central questions regarding plasmonic hot electrons are how to quantify and extract the optically-excited energetic electrons in a nanocrystal. We develop a theory describing the generation rates and the energ…
Harvesting non-equilibrium hot carriers from photo-excited metal nanoparticles has enabled plasmon-driven photochemical transformations and tunable photodetection with resonant nanoantennas. Despite numerous studies on the ultrafast dynamics of hot electrons, to date, the temporal evolution of hot holes in metal-semiconductor heterostructures remains unknown. An improved understanding of the carrier dynamics in hot-hole-driven systems is needed to help expand the scope of hot-carrier optoelectronics beyond hot-electron-based devices. Here, using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, we …
A `toy model' - aimed at capturing the essential physics - is presented that jointly describes spin-polarized hot electron transport and spin pumping driven by local heating. These two processes both contribute to spin-current generation in laser-excited magnetic heterostructures. The model is used to compare the two contributions directly. The spin-polarized hot electron current is modeled as one generation of hot electrons with a spin-dependent excitation and relaxation scheme. Upon decay, the excess energy of the hot electrons is transferred to a thermalized electron bath. The elevated elec…
Due to their high energy, hot electrons in quantum Hall edge states can be considered as single particles that have the potential to be used for quantum optics-like experiments. Unlike photons, however, electrons typically undergo scattering processes in transport, which results in a loss of coherence and limits their ability to show quantum-coherent behaviour. Here we study theoretically the decoherence mechanisms of hot electrons in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and highlight the role played by both acoustic and optical phonon emission. We discuss optimal choices of experimental parameters …
The energy relaxation channels of hot electrons far from thermal equilibrium in a degenerate two-dimensional electron system are investigated in transport experiments in a mesoscopic three-terminal device. We observe a transition from two dimensions at zero magnetic field to quasi--one-dimensional scattering of the hot electrons in a strong magnetic field. In the two-dimensional case electron-electron scattering is the dominant relaxation mechanism, while the emission of optical phonons becomes more and more important as the magnetic field is increased. The observation of up to 11 optical phon…
In the quantum Hall effect (QHE) regime, heat is carried by electrons in the edge states of Landau levels. Here, we study cooling of hot electrons propagating along the edge of graphene at the filling factor $ν=\pm2$, mediated by acoustic phonons. We determine the temperature profile extended from a hot spot, where the Hall current is injected into graphene from a metallic contact, taking into account specifics of boundary conditions for lattice displacements in graphene in a van der Waals heterostructure with an insulating substrate. Our calculations, performed using generic boundary conditio…
Efficient operation of electronic nanodevices at ultrafast speeds requires understanding and control of the currents generated by femtosecond bursts of light. Ultrafast laser-induced currents in metallic nanojunctions can originate from photo-assisted hot electron tunneling or lightwave-induced tunneling. Both processes can drive localized photocurrents inside a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) on femto- to attosecond time scales, enabling ultrafast STM with atomic spatial resolution. Femtosecond laser excitation of a metallic nanojunction, however, also leads to the formation of a transien…
Ballistic transport of hot electrons in a quantum Hall edge channel is attractive for studying electronic analog of quantum optics, where the edge potential profile is an important parameter that governs the charge velocity and scattering by longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons. Here we use a parallel double gate to control the electric field of the edge potential, and investigate the ballistic length of the channel by using hot-electron spectroscopy. The ballistic length is significantly enhanced by reducing the LO phonon scattering rate in the tailored potential.
We theoretically study phonon-drag contribution to the thermoelectric power and hot-electron energy-loss rate in a Rashba spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in the Bloch-Gruneisen (BG) regime. We assume that electrons interact with longitudinal acoustic phonons through deformation potential and with both longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonons through piezoelectric potential. Effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction on magnitude and temperature dependence of the phonon-drag thermoelectric power and hot-electron energy-loss rate are discussed. We numerically extra…
Photocurrent (PC) measurements can reveal the relaxation dynamics of photo-excited hot carriers beyond the linear response of conventional transport experiments, a regime important for carrier multiplication. In graphene subject to a magnetic field, PC measurements are able to probe the existence of Landau levels with different edge chiralities which is exclusive to relativistic electron systems. Here, we report the accurate measurement of PC in graphene in the quantum Hall regime. Prominent PC oscillations as a function of gate voltage on samples' edges are observed. These oscillation amplitu…
Hot electron transport of direct and scattered carriers across an epitaxial NiSi_2/n-Si(111) interface, for different NiSi_2 thickness, is studied using Ballistic Electron Emission Microscopy (BEEM). We find the BEEM transmission for the scattered hot electrons in NiSi_2 to be significantly lower than that for the direct hot electrons, for all thicknesses. Interestingly, the attenuation length of the scattered hot electrons is found to be twice larger than that of the direct hot electrons. The lower BEEM transmission for the scattered hot electrons is due to inelastic scattering of the injecte…
Hot electrons play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of photon-to-current conversion or photocatalytic reactions. In semiconductor nanocrystals, energetic hot electrons capable of photoemission can be generated via the upconversion process involving the dopant-originated intermediate state, currently known only in Mn-doped cadmium chalcogenide quantum dots. Here, we report that Mn-doped CsPbBr3 nanocrystals are an excellent platform for generating hot electrons via upconversion that can benefit from various desirable exciton properties and the structural diversity of metal halide pero…
We develop a chiral anomalous fermion hamiltonian proposal to study the higher order topological (HOT) phase with chiral symmetry $\mathcal{C}$ fractionalized like $\mathcal{C}_{x}\mathcal{C}_{y}\mathcal{C}_{z}$. First, we solve the $\mathcal{C}$-chiral symmetry constraint for eight band models and describe those induced by the partial $\mathcal{C}_{i}$'s. Then, we determine the explicit expression of fractional states characterising HOT matter and comment on the relationships amongst them and with the standard Altland-Zirnbauer gapless modes. We also give characteristic properties of the gapl…
We report a computational theoretical investigation of electron spin-flip scattering induced by the electron-phonon interaction in the transition-metal ferromagnets bcc Fe, fcc Co and fcc Ni. The Elliott-Yafet electron-phonon spin-flip scattering is computed from first-principles, employing a generalized spin-flip Eliashberg function as well as ab initio computed phonon dispersions. Aiming at investigating the amount of electron-phonon mediated demagnetization in femtosecond laser-excited ferromagnets, the formalism is extended to treat laser-created thermalized as well as nonequilibrium, nont…
We present a technique to calculate the spin relaxation of hot electrons during their energy thermalization in the Gamma-valley of zinc-blende semiconductors. The results of this model match recent experimental data and they can be used to check the applicability of spin related boundary conditions across a semiconductor/ferromagnet junction in reverse bias conditions (spin injection).
Nanostars (NSTs) are spiky nanocrystals with plasmonic hot spots. In this study, we show that strong electromagnetic fields localized in the nanostar tips are able to generate large numbers of energetic (hot) electrons, which can be used for photochemistry. To compute plasmonic nanocrystals with complex shapes, we develop a quantum approach based on the effect of surface generation of hot electrons. We then apply this approach to nanostars, nanorods and nanospheres. We found that that the plasmonic nanostars with multiple hot spots have the best characteristics for optical generation of hot el…
We study collective excitations in hot rotating chiral media in presence of magnetic field in kinetic theory, namely Chiral Heat Wave and its' mixings with Chiral Vortical Wave and Chiral Magnetic Wave. Our results for velocities of these waves have slight alterations from those obtained earlier. We explain the origin of these alterations and also give the most general expressions for the velocities of all these waves in hydrodynamic approach.
We evaluate the limiting efficiency of full and partial solar spectrum harvesting via the process of internal photoemission in Au-semiconductor Schottky junctions. Our results based on the ab initio calculations of the electron density of states (e-DOS) reveal that the limiting efficiency of the full-spectrum Au converter based on hot electron injection is below 4%. This value is even lower than previously established limit based on the parabolic approximation of the Au electron energy bands. However, we predict limiting efficiency exceeding 10% for the hot holes collection through the Schottk…
